I’m not sure anybody really believed that the grand jury was anything more than a deliberate effort by McCullough to provide cover for himself and the STLCPD when he refused to bring charges against Wilson. The man’s record, his background, his own views on the people his office tries, made it pretty clear from the start that he had no interest in holding a cop responsible for his actions.

But the slap across the face was Gov. Nixon’s remarks shortly after McCullough’s own, confirming that there would be no move to remove him and appoint a special prosecutor, that put on display just how much the “Ol Boys” were working to protect one of their own.

12 simoom  Nov 20, 2014 9:47:20pm

After the hundreds of thousands that were crowd-funded for Wilson, that he can spend as he pleases, I imagine this is far less of a sacrifice than he advertises it as.

Slight/large change of subject.

I think Charles P. Pierce pretty well summed up the sane reaction to the President’s speech tonight:

There will be time in the coming days to talk about the politics, and the process, and about what is very likely to be a staggering overreaction by the president’s political opponents. But, for now, when I saw the video of the people who were most directly affected by the president’s actions, the people with a glimmer of hope in their eyes, the people waving the little flags a little more vigorously, I knew that the president had the moral and historical high ground on this issue.

I saw my grandmother among them, come to America and a job folding sheets for the swells, first in Boston and then in Worcester. The heart of the experience is the same. The hope is the same. And the rest is all for later.

I want to see Obama declare National Free Cake and Playing With Puppies Day. By executive order, he would set aside a small sum (by government standards) to distribute a free piece of delicious cake, and half an hour of playing with a puppy, on that day.

Then I want to watch the Republicans’ reaction. Let’s see how far they’ll go to hate on cake and puppies. We know they will, but let’s put the hate to the test, and see how deep that rabbit hole of crazy can go.

That’s the basic logical fault in right-wing reaction.

The people affected by the laws are already here. The country will be exactly the same tomorrow as it was yesterday. THERE IS NO NET CHANGE UNLESS YOU’RE AN IMMIGRANT. It’s a bit like anything to do with gay rights - why do they even give a crap? It doesn’t affect them at all.

State faces $2.2 billion deficit heading into 2015-17 budget cycle

Gov. Scott Walker’s administration is projecting a $2.2 billion deficit heading into the 2015-17 budget cycle.

That’s a sizable hole for Walker, who is contemplating a 2016 presidential run, to climb out of as he crafts his budget proposal due out early next year. Achieving a balanced budget will require scaling back program requests, especially if he wants to cut taxes further.

“We will continue to protect Wisconsin taxpayers, provide a good value to those taxpayers, and live within our means,” Walker spokeswoman Laurel Patrick said. “Gov. Walker will introduce a balanced budget early next year focused on growing the economy and moving people from government dependence to true independence.”

And that really is the GOP in a nutshell. Their tax cut strategy leads, contrary to predictions, to budgetary shortfalls and impending deficits. What do they do? Push more tax cuts while further butchering the budget. In short, WI is yet another state where we can see how the farce that was the “Balanced Budget Amendment” would actually play out.

Overnight here in NYC, there were two NYPD incidents that should raise eyebrows (as if they weren’t sufficiently raised in light of the pending grand jury verdict in the Wilson shooting case).

The first is that there appears to be video of an incident that occurred last night in the subway where a fare beater was resisting arrest, but the cop used his nightstick to beat the man. The video shows the man getting whaled upon by the cop and emerging bloody around the face.

The video doesn’t show the entire incident, but a thorough investigation should be carried out.

The second is that NYPD was engaged in an officer involved shooting resulting in the death of a 28 year old man. That investigation is still underway and the NYPD isn’t sure what prompted the shooting. Only one round was fired by one of the officers.

There are still far too many officer involved shootings and excessive force incidents around the country. Ferguson may have been a wakeup call, but there have been numerous officer involved shootings after Ferguson where the police have shot and killed persons - not all of them are justified.

Some of them are justified (such as when you have an active shooter in FSU gunning down students in the library), but every incident should be fully investigated to determine whether excessive force was used and whether the officers followed proper procedures.

And the investigation should be done with full disclosure and transparency with all information about who was involved made public immediately as that information is known.

Oh, and while the nitwits are claiming global warming doesn’t exist, they ignore that Alaska is again seeing a snow deficit and much warmer temperatures than normal because of the very system that sent the cold air rushing towards Buffalo.

Warmer weather is on the way - it’s supposed to hit 60+ in NYC next week. It’ll be in the 50s next week with rain likely on Monday in Buffalo - vastly increasing the chances of building and roof collapses.

Gee, why wouldn’t the union think that Darren Wilson wont get indicted? The system is gamed that way, and the prosecutor McCullough has repeatedly refused to indict on excessive force/officer involved shooting cases.

Police should not get a pass on their use of force. Theirs is a difficult job, but the use of deadly force is something that police departments resort too far too often.

Heck, if the Secret Service can take down an armed White House intruder without a shot fired, or the FBI can arrest a cop killer without a shot fired (Eric Frein) or capture notorious bomber Eric Rudolph alive, then local police departments can and should do more to arrest those who are engaged in nothing more than jaywalking at the time the incident begins.

Wilson may be looking for a golden parachute, but his actions should get the scrutiny of a courtroom.

Agreed. These days, most of the people who do manage to schlep themselves to the polls seem to feel that once someone’s elected they need pay no further attention to what that person actually does in office. Scott Walker, as well as Congressional Republicans are prime examples yet the Senate will now be in the hands of the same party whose list of achievements could be written on the back of a matchbook with room to spare for a grocery list.

105 makeitstop  Nov 21, 2014 7:09:26am

A commenter on my FB page last night left the most succinct summary of Obama’s EO:

IF you have been here 5 years or longer AND have a minor dependent who is citizen AND you submit to (and pay for) a background check AND are not a criminal PLUS pay taxes THEN you can stay WHILE you follow the normal process towards applying for citizenship without fear of deportation.

As far as the EO itself - I think last night, Obama signaled to Wingnut Nation that he can, and will, play hardball too. You guys want to threaten to shut down the government? Fine. I’ll see your meaningless shutdown and raise you an Executive Action on something that really matters.

The president dropped the gloves last night. And all those people who have been accusing him of using ‘Chicago-style politics’ for years might actually get to see some for real now. And I think he’s been waiting for the day that he could do it.

I think he’s started with the EO. My wingnuts are crying so hard, screaming about ‘overreach’ and being an ‘emperor’ and all that.

I see the EO as a hardball tactic to get Congress to do something - either pass the bill that the Senate passed over a year ago, or craft their own bill, or amend the points of the EO - something. Obama seriously damaged their position of doing nothing last night.

Of course, they’ll do the stupid thing and continue to rail about this, because stoking immigration fears is far too effective a means of fundraising to give up. Meanwhile, Obama gets his way.

Neat trick he pulled off last night, dropping the entire issue squarely in Boehner and McConnell’s laps. I’m hoping the next two years will turn into a Master Class on how much smarter Obama is than his political opponents.

It wasn’t the black community that was the victim of excessive force by police, but the white community that looks the other way and condones the force used by police in quelling peaceful protests.

We keep getting photos of gun shops with whites lined up to get guns/ammo.

Yet ProgsToday ignores that many of the storefronts that were boarded up ahead of possible protests are black-owned and operated, and have shown solidarity with the peaceful protesters with signs showing hands up - don’t shoot.

I can only assume that the sky is green in ProgsToday’s world.

So, that officer involved shooting in NYC this morning? Looks like it was accidental - involving a probationary officer just 18 months in to the job. And while the Commissioner says that it’s up to the discretion of the officer whether to unholster their weapon, it looks like the officer was accidentally discharged (with a fatal shot).

We have more information a few hours after an officer involved shooting in NYC (including apparently placing fault on the officer for accidentally firing their weapon), than Ferguson’s police department did in weeks (again).

It doesn’t diminish the need to reduce these events from happening, but at least there’s more transparency with the NYPD on these shootings and excessive force incidents. There also needs to be more accountability for the officers involved.

This reminds me of a time working with a print rep that was a very devote born again Christian.

He worked up some quotes for a brochure we were producing at an ad agency where I was working. He told me he had prayed that he was giving us the best prices and services he could offer and felt through God he would get the job.

I said to him, what if another print rep from another print house was doing the same? How would God decide who had the best prices and service? How would I decide?

The look on his face was priceless. He was almost shocked. I guess he hadn’t thought there might be other printers who also believed in God, prayed and hoped for the best too. God must have been his God and only his. Now, God may actually let him down.

Being an auto racing fan, back when I watched NASCAR (when it was good real stock car racing) I always got a kick out of the drivers that said they prayed to God for a safe race and a win.

Damn. God sure is stuck making some crazy decisions in this world he created.

Shocking, I know.

Nixon’s in CYA mode, and trying to be proactive after ignoring events in Ferguson for far too long. And then decides that the course of action is to treat the residents of Ferguson like criminals before anything is produced by the grand jury, even though it’s the police that should be the ones that are critically examined and restrained - it was their actions that not only directly led to the death of Michael Brown (at the hands of Darren Wilson), but the subsequent coverup, leaks of completely unrelated video (as admitted by FPD Chief Belmar), and then inciting further violence by showing up with riot police to what had otherwise been peaceful protests (and aiming loaded weapons at peaceful protesters, arresting and detaining journalists and people minding their own business on their own property, etc.).

The first US law restricting immigration, the Page Act, wasn’t passed until 1875. Before that act was passed immigration was considered a separate issue from naturalization and citizenship. I sure as hell am not going to defend Bill Cosby, but I really do wonder about all the numbers of women coming out and covering time as far back as the 70s. I guess it is a numbers/ratio thing.

What I mean is, I would have thought that in all that time and with all those women at least a couple would have raised the issue prior to the one case that was settled out of court back in (I think) 2006.

And even if they couldn’t have proved it, just the sheer number of complaints would cause Hollywood/LA/New York movie and TV producers to shy away from using him and he would have never come to be America’s TV Father.

Again no denial. Just really do not understand. And yes, I am fully aware that many women do not come forward and or are not believed and also have a tough time with case evidence and the like.

I look at it like Roman Polanski. He had one charge and was found guilty an yes he chickened out and left the country, but his name was mud from then on. If Cosby had 20 or so women over 20 years come forward I would think he would have been toast just on innuendo. No one would have hired him out of fear it was all true.

Yes. And his defenders pale in comparison to those that think he is a criminal and would never trust him again, and that is the public.

Plus, there are a lot of details to Polanski and how he was dealt with as far as his sentencing. I think he gets backing by many because he plead guilty and they feel he did his time and was supposed to be released. He fled because he thought the judge was going to renege on the agreement.

What I am addressing is Cosby would have had a completely different career if more of this all had come out then and not now. The public would have been very leery of him. Now he is fat and rich and can slide off into retirement. Are not the statute of limitations up on all the cases?

Hell, look at JFK - known philanderer, and yet the press kept it hush-hush. And Cosby was in Hollyweird, where there was/is such a thing as the casting couch.

Polanski won a best director Oscar for The Pianist, btw.

257 lawhawk  Nov 21, 2014 11:16:52am

Priorities - don’t climb on that sign.

Ignore why people are protesting in the first place - a completely rotten law enforcement system and criminal justice system that has been keeping minority residents subjugated for decades. And then complain when they protest in protecting their civil rights and blame them when things escalate (all while ignoring that the escalations occurred when law enforcement violated protesters’ and reporters’ civil rights and the politicians lay the blame on the community themselves, and not their own actions).

Yes, I know about his Oscar. I’ve never seen the film…he is one reason. And that is hard for me, because I do tend to separate an artist from their work, but there are times when I can’t.

Humans are very complicated.

By the way, I guess I never knew that it was common knowledge Cosby was a creep and asshole. I was part of the public that was duped. Can I ask where you heard all that? I was planning on doing some reading on all this this weekend. If you have any links, I’d appreciate them.

Again. I am not defending Crosby. I guess I wish more would have been said a long time ago. That I find sad. For all the women and for America to have been duped. Hell, I was duped. I liked Bill Crosby. I wish I had known more of all these allegations. I think they alone would have changed my personal opinion of him years ago.

I haven’t liked Bill Cosby for over 25 years after my brother related an incident that happened at one of his track meets in high school. Bill Cosby was there with another man and he kept making loud jokes about a pudgy kid who was running more slowly than the pack. These “jokes” were loud enough for the kid to hear them. Sorry, I should clarify that it was common knowledge within Hollywood circles. There were several commenters on the various Jezebel and Gawker threads who claimed to have worked with him at various times, or worked in the industry (I know, on the Internet nobody knows you’re a dog), so take that for what it’s worth. Also, that comedian who brought this to most recent attention (forget his name) made a point that it’s been going on for a long time.

OT, but this is just too funny: dailykos.com

Yesterday’s loon of the day, Ira Hansen, the incoming GOP speaker for the Nevada statehouse is actually attempting the “taken out of context” and “sorry I offended you” ploy with respect to the entirety of his past career.

Take it away, Hunter:

How the hell can comments made over an entire columnist and talk show career be taken “out of context”? What additional “context” could possibly be provided? Pictures you drew in the third grade? An explanation of plate tectonics? When you boast about having a confederate flag pinned to the wall of your office, what “context” are we missing there?

Nothing says respect for race, gender, religious or political beliefs like hanging a confederate flag behind your chair while writing that you did so “in honor and in memory of a great cause.” It’s the universal symbol of racial respect.

339 lawhawk  Nov 21, 2014 12:58:23pm

With the confluence of police in riot gear and a media that wants to be able to cover, well, something, the odds are that even if things are relatively quiet, whatever “rioting” does occur, will be blown out of proportion and turned into an across the board smear of everyone in Ferguson.

What will be lost on everyone is if no indictment is handed down, that Darren Wilson was able to kill an unarmed black man without a court of law determining whether he was culpable - rather the grand jury will have decided that based on the crap case that McCullough put together, that Wilson was justified in his use of deadly force, even though pretty much every public statement uttered by the police turned out to be misrepresenting key facts, or were flat out lies.

It doesn’t matter that McCullough will turn over all that information if an indictment isn’t returned. If he thought that Wilson should be indicted, he could have steered to that result. His actions all along have been to try and avoid that outcome to the greatest extent possible. His history of refusing to go after police accused of excessive force is still more proof of his bias in favor of cops and discounting claims by eyewitnesses and victims of police brutality.

As Sleuth said, self-fulfilling prophesy—particularly Nixon’s ham-handed pronouncements.

Ooooh….Obama is seriously calling out Boehner now.

After all, an indictment doesn’t mean he’s guilty. It only means that there’s sufficient evidence to bring a criminal case before a jury in a court of law.

A jury could still find that Wilson was justified in his shooting and killing of Brown (even though there’s a ton of evidence suggesting otherwise) and find Wilson not guilty under MO state law for justified use of force. But Ferguson isn’t even likely to get to that stage.

I’m convinced that’s why he did it. To drive the right crazy. Do they realize how foolish they look trying to convince everyone only THEY know what true Christianity is about and THEY are the only scholars capable of interpreting the gospels? They are truly sickening.

I think it’s time for the Christian Left to reclaim the mantle of Christianity, or at least to contest the Right’s claim to exclusive ownership of it. The older boy’s GF didn’t realize that there are Christians who AREN’T assholes.

There was a brief interview with Dana Rohrabacher (GOP member of the House from somewhere down around San Diego, I think) on NPR this morning to get his take on the immigration executive order. It was amazing to listen to him tie himself in knots to avoid offending Hispanics, offending right wing nut jobs, and not commit himself on what should be done about immigration.

Apparently, he would come here illegally himself if he were in the illegal immigrants shoes, they are good people, but we need to send them all back and defend our border and blah, blah, blah. Never did answer the questions about what to do about an immigration reform bill.

Supposedly the DA has said if their is no indictment returned they will make all of the grand jury evidence public.

Magee said McCulloch did not need court approval to transcribe the proceedings but would obtain a court order from St. Louis Circuit Judge Carolyn Whittington to release the transcripts and audio.

I don’t believe she has said whether she’ll grant it.

McCulloch has said he will ask the judge for permission to release all the documents from the case. He then will hold a press conference, said Ed Magee, a spokesman for McCulloch.
But there will be no public record in electronic St. Louis County Circuit Court filings, because it will be treated as a dismissal.

Can I also point out that Phyllicia Rashad, Lisa Bonet, Raven-Symone and Tempest Bledsoe have been conspicuously silent?

If this was all a load of crap, you’d think women who worked with him for a decade might stand up in his defense.

As, for instance, the women who worked with Clarence Thomas in fact did. They were kept waiting until something like 2AM by Sen. Metzenbaum, who then decided that his committee didn’t need to hear from them after all because, in his words, “we know what they’re going to say.”
