Rudy Giuliani: “White Police Officers Wouldn’t Be There if You [Blacks] Weren’t Killing Each Other”

“The defensive mechanism of white supremacy”
Wingnuts • Views: 30,771

MSNBC

In response to a question from Chuck Todd about the overwhelming prevalence of white police officers in black communities, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani hauled out one of the right wing’s “but what about this?” non sequitur talking points — the counter-charge that most violence against blacks is committed by other blacks. Michael Eric Dyson calls it “the defensive mechanism of white supremacy,” and I have to agree. What Giuliani is saying here is that black communities have some special kind of savagery that can only be controlled by white police.

It’s a horrifyingly patronizing and racist view; “white supremacy” is no exaggeration.

Giuliani let his freak flag fly.

And those that think like him will say, see that black sociology professor (socialist!) is being THE racist. And tomorrow America will awake and be the same as it was today.

It’s hard rolling that big rock up that really steep hill.

8 HappyWarrior  Nov 23, 2014 1:18:39pm

No one blames “white culture” for corporate crime or mass murders but it’s somehow ok to do this to blacks.

Wow. My FB feed is filled with comments on the 12 year old killed by police, and not the good kind. Calling him stupid. Wondering what he was doing with a toy gun. (yeah, that’s amazing considering we are teaching 5 year old’s how to shoot REAL guns) Attacking his parents. Defending the officer so much to say that the cop will NEVER get over this. All the while, a 12 year old with a toy gun is shot dead because he was perceived as a threat to a cop.

Can this day get any more depressing?

Exactly. Just like white people wetting their pants back when MLK was marching or by any other part of the civil rights movement which “threatened” them.

Never mind that people were dying just trying to secure the same rights white Americans had. Remember Birmingham and other places where crimes were committed by LE against people of the United States.

Um, what? Most blacks die of natural causes, not homicide, moron. This is your brain on Republican, apparently.

20 Justanotherhuman  Nov 23, 2014 1:42:39pm

Look what they’re selling kids this year.

Think Progress has a good story on the Tamir Rice killing.

thinkprogress.org

“Deputy Chief Ed Tomba explained at a press conference that there was no verbal confrontation; the boy did not threaten the police officers nor point the gun at them. They only learned afterward that the gun was fake — a BB gun with the orange safety marker scratched off. Both officers, one of whom is a rookie in his first year on the force, have been placed on administrative leave, according to protocol.

“This is hardly the first shooting related to a toy or fake gun. In August, 22-year-old John Crawford of Beavercreek, Ohio, was shot dead by police inside a Wal-Mart for carrying a BB gun that is made to look like a more deadly weapon and is actually sold by Wal-Mart. (my emphasis)

“Back in July of 2013, 13-year-old Andy Lopez was fatally shot when police similarly mistook his BB gun for an assault rifle. Officer Erick Gelhaus waited no more than 10 seconds for Lopez to put the gun down before firing seven shots at point-blank range. The gun, like in the Cleveland case, was missing an orange plastic plug that is supposed to help identify it as a toy. After the shooting was investigated, Gelhaus did not face any criminal charges.” More

It hasn’t always gone so badly.
Of course, that happened in 1980 and things appear to have changed. I do know that “kid with toy gun” is a very common situation for police officers and they should absolutely be aware of the possibility. It’s about a hundred times as likely as “kid with real gun.” The cops were either flatworm stupid or they did not want to pass up an opportunity to shoot.

No permanent damage? Don’t let the auto ins co low-ball you, either. Keep track of your lost wages/profits, medical bills, and demand at least 3X the amount, for pain and suffering, unless you have suffered some type of permanent damage, which would change things considerably. I don’t know how the auto ins laws work in OH, but the driver’s liability ins should pay for your injuries, not ACA. His ins co should be notified.

74 andres  Nov 23, 2014 2:21:30pm

Sorry for going OT.

I read Neil Gaiman’s interview and speech on the importance of keeping libraries open this morning, and something was nagging me since.

I finally found what was nagging me.

It’s a huge contrast, and one that makes me ponder: What’s the difference between Gaiman, and Love (and Ryan and Abbott and Santorum and many Republicans and Libertarians)?

Humility. Humility to accept publicly that they couldn’t have reach where they are today without the help of others. Humility to see the ongoing need for the services they once enjoyed. Humility to extend the same help to others so they can also reach their dreams.

It’s jarring how Republicans and Libertarians1 preach about pulling themselves by the bootstraps, and yet refuse vehemently to provide the necessary bootstraps for people just like them to earn a better life. Worst, they rail against the very institutions that helped them reach their current lives.

We need to become passionate about these institutions, if we are to keep them for generations to come. Passionate with vision of tomorrow.

Sorry for the rant.

Wasn’t he at an after school thingy as well??? Gah, so freaking wrong.

Oh yum. They look beautiful.

I’ve been basically carbo free for about a month. Am going to go big soon.

I’ve officially lost 45 lbs now just counting calories. I’m limiting sugary foods and other carbs just because they add up fast. Not convinced that carbs in general are the problem, my theory is you can’t beat thermodynamics, that it’s a budget problem, energy in vs. energy burned.

Of course I’m losing weight more slowly now, so I’m going to have to change up my game plan to meet my end goal.

89 Justanotherhuman  Nov 23, 2014 2:32:44pm

It’s worth it to pay a little extra on your auto ins for uninsured and underinsured coverage.

I have that and also $50K for bodily injuries. So far, I’ve never hurt anyone.

WW’s incident definitely ended up trauma center.
Which was a much better place than it would have been without local bystanders jumping into action until first responders showed up.

Yeah, cutting carbs was the easiest way for me to go, so I can eat a ton more veggies to fill up and not go over the calorie count. It’s a freaking battle. I’ve plateaued of course, 10 more to skinny jeans. Probably not going to happen, because by now I’m fed up.

After 30 years I have finally started to use my slow-cooker for something other than cholent.

I work late sometimes and the stay-at-home retired old man doesn’t really know how to make anything that’s not on a grill.

Tomorrow: Jamaican Jerk Chicken Wings

I want to talk data, please. Racial disclaimer: I am white. Proof of non-racism: husband is a basketball coach in a predominantly black area of a major city. His players are at our house 24/7, as are their families. These boys, every single one, are sons to me. And I am so scared for them. For their families. I love them, simply and purely. I see race because I need to. It matters. I have to accept these players are at more risk due to the color of their skin than my own two sons.

This is the reality of the data. Violent crime is much higher in black communities. We have to face that before we can work with those communities to help in the way THEY ask us to. It’s not for white people to say what is best for the black community. It’s damn offensive, actually.

Now, increasing police forces. When there are more cops there is less PROPERTY crime. But it has NO impact on violent crime because violent crime is a PRIVATE crime. So, what police can control is property crime or they can arrest perpetrators of violent crime after they’ve already happened.

Neither of these things will prevent violence. You know what does? The biggest impact we can put in place? Much more important than cops or the war on drugs? More than economic disparity? The #1 factor?

Getting rid of goddamn guns.

So, if people are truly concerned about the black community, or any community, pass fucking gun control. Reduce the number of guns. That’s the most important thing we can do.

Blacks overwhelmingly favor gun control. Who does not? Conservative white men. Are they willing to help the black community heal itself? Fuck no.

Rudy can kiss my ass.

101 Justanotherhuman  Nov 23, 2014 2:42:29pm

I think everyone around here is in too much of a hurry. And are bad, bad drivers.

Don’t know how many times lately someone has pulled right out in front of me (even when no one is behind me in traffic).

Last week I was nearing my g-grandson’s school, and a behemoth pickup truck didn’t look past the 2 cars in the turn lane for the Advance store, and pulled out right in front of me (I was traveling under the speed limit of 50). I had to slam on brakes, literally to the floor, which caused my car to turn sideways into the turning lane and the smell of “rubber” was all over the place. Luckily there was no one else going into the Advance store.

I recovered quickly enough to get going again, but my hands were still shaking when I got to g-grandson’s classroom.

For a couple of seconds, though, I really thought I was going to slam into him.

And just be aware that the other driver’s vehicle liability insurance isn’t going to come anywhere near close to covering the medical expenses if you and/or yours are seriously injured.

There’s something to be said for protein and fat. My Dad was in the hospital last week for a small bowel obstruction, because he eats these fucking ridiculously ginormous salads every night and the constant onslaught of leafy bulk literally blocked his shit up, causing debilitating pain. He has some scar tissue from a previous frontal entry back surgery that apparently created adhesions. He’s fine now, cleared itself after a few days of rest in the hospital, so the whole episode is kind of funny in hindsight. Who knew salads could fuck you up that bad?

Right now I live for oven roasted chicken quarters and cottage cheese with some tomatoes. BBQing a bone in leg of lamb for Thanksgiving, with greek dressing and feta. Might splurge and do baked potatoes.

Turkey is for lepers.

How about he studies the growth of the Italian, Jewish and Irish mobs in the impoverished immigrant communities of, say, New York? Ask Mr. Giuliani if he ever grew up in one of those neighborhoods. Most of the people there, where they Mafiosi? No, they weren’t. Were there youth gangs? You bet. Juvenile delinquents, Officer Krupke.

Now, go to the ’70s. In the black neighborhoods, what was different? As Geoffrey Canada has written about, what was different was white flight, the loss of jobs in the city, the appearance of illegal drugs, the Rockefeller drug laws, and suddenly, instead of gangs fighting with fists, stones and clubs, suddenly everybody had guns. Not zip guns, which were inaccurate, fired one shot, and had a limited range, but real guns, plentiful as though they bought them from ice cream trucks, which they sometimes did.

Guiliani has proven himself to be not just a classical racist but an idiot.

Something I have wondered for a long time: When were Italians accepted as “white” in American society? I’m 1/4 Italian by the way.
