Nevada Speaker-Elect Ira Hansen Steps Down After His Extremism Is Exposed

Hansen keeps a Confederate battle flag on the wall where he writes
Politics • Views: 26,294

The incoming Republican speaker of the Nevada State Assembly, Ira Hansen, is stepping down from the post after the Reno News & Review brought to light his history of amazingly overt racism and bigotry.

“Politics of personal destruction win. I need to step down,” Hansen wrote in the email. “I hope that you all know that the Ira that you have known through these years and weeks is the real Ira and not what the media is painting me to be.”

“You are a great group that can hopefully do great things and my staying will harm the caucus,” he added. “I wish you all the best. Thanks for hanging tough through these difficult past days. If this were just about ‘me’ I would fight this out to the bitter end, but it is going to harm all of you.”

And of course, Hansen maintains that he’s the victim of a smear campaign and his words were distorted.

For the greater good of the State of Nevada and the cause I support it is necessary for me to withdraw as Speaker Designee. The tens of thousands of people who both read my columns and listened to my radio shows through two decades in the media know this has been a carefully orchestrated attack to remove a conservative Republican from a major leadership role in State government. The deliberate character assassination and the politics of personal destruction have totally distorted my views and record. Ultimately, this whole attack has very little to do with my views. The powers that be are planning a massive, more than one billion dollar, tax increase and I stood in the way as Speaker. I have already served two terms as an Assemblyman without any of these vicious attacks. It was only when I had risen to leadership that this smear campaign occurred. That is the real reason for this and it is vital the public understands that.

It’s a little hard to “distort” views like these, however:

Hansen has said he keeps a Confederate battle flag on the wall where he writes his columns. “I fly it proudly in honor and in memory of a great cause and my brave ancestors who fought for that cause,” he wrote.

Hansen tends to use the term “Negro” and often does not capitalize it. In one column, he described Washoe Republican Sen. Maurice Washington (whom he supported) as black but in the same column called President Obama (whom he opposes) a “negro”—lower case.

You know, as big an ass this guy is, I could actually muster up a smidgen of respect if he stood up and owned his own damn bigotry. This guy is just an all-around poor excuse of a human being.

Everyone is better off distancing themselves from this loser.

And if he could ever see past his image of himself, I bet there are plenty of people that know he’s been the real Ira all along. They probably either put up with him, are glad handing or losers and wastes too.

The whole no capitalizing Negro is weird. On top of using a term that is, at best, hopelessly outdated, he’s basically saying Blacks as a group aren’t deserving of a proper noun. I get that there once was a time when they actually preferred the term Negro, because the alternative was Colored and there’s all kinds of reason they thought that was fucked up. But the reason that Negro was abandoned is pretty fucking obvious, and any white person who insists on using it is sending a clear and unambiguous message. Taking a stand against capitalizing it just amplifies that message, adding further insult to injury.

Then there’s the Confederate flag thing, which, no, just no. I’m sorry, it was an absolutely atrocious cause, being proud of that shit is deeply fucked up.

What a huge dick.

As a tangent, this goes some way towards informing the same sex marriage debate. Language and how we use it obviously evolves to meet modern ethical and stylistic standards. There’s no excuse for using linguistic purism to insist society cling to outdated conventions at the expense of tangible, real world equality, or enable the continuation of old bigotries.

It’s so drearily predictable.

Hansen’s actually an old-school caveman, with some antisemitic and anti-Israel writings as well.

When an assisted living home in California shut down last fall, many of its residents were left behind, with nowhere to go.

The staff at the Valley Springs Manor left when they stopped getting paid — except for cook Maurice Rowland and Miguel Alvarez, the janitor.

“There was about 16 residents left behind, and we had a conversation in the kitchen, ‘What are we going to do?’ ” Rowland says.

“If we left, they wouldn’t have nobody,” the 34-year-old Alvarez says.

Conservative Republicans like our bigoted subject Ira Hansen cannot be bothered to be intellectually honest about their positions which are completely untenable in the mainstream. Speaking of comment sections, and looking to lighten things up a bit, you might know that Kirk Cameron has a new holiday movie out that is a giant turkey which was panned universally and mocked incessantly on Rotten Tomatoes.

So, being the honest, godly man that he is, Kirk took to facebook to ask his fans to uprate his horror show, whether or not they had seen it. Of course, there are now a series of rave reviews from his buds, but I went through and picked out some of the best of the non-solicited ones for your entertainment:

Well, I was impressed by the closing credits, and how the teams of EMTs shouting “CLEAR!” as they tried to revive several audience members who’d tried to end their own lives rather than sit through this movie

Where to even start with the first Christmas movie to make the baby Jesus cry.

Jesus wept. Then demanded a full refund and punched a reindeer.

I no longer fear hell, for I have seen “Saving Christmas.”

I liked Christmas before seeing this. It really took the bloom off the rose.

I saw it for free, and demanded my money back!!!

Guess Christmas LOST - if this is the guy they sent to save it.

Christmas shouldn’t be this painful

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth, then Kirk Cameron made this movie and God decided it was time to send an asteroid from heaven to wipe this hemorrhoid of a movie from existence.

Mr Cameron’s film efforts disprove the notion of a benevolent god.

Instead of paying to see this movie, give the money to a friend and ask them to kick you in the crotch — you’ll have a better time than watching this sad mess.

I feel bad for Kirk. I hope one day medical science finds a cure.

If there really is a War on Christmas, this movie brought Christmas one step closer to losing the battle.

The best Christmas present Kirk Cameron could give the world is to stop making movies..

Calling Kirk an actor is like calling pork a fruit.

I liked the popcorn.

re: #52 Backwoods_Sleuth

Jim has a fantastic Facebook post expanding on that:

If Ted Cruz wants to stop executive action by President Obama, he has a simple and effective method of doing so. He doesn’t have to shut down the government. He doesn’t have to sue. He doesn’t have to hold up nominations. He doesn’t have to make threats about impeachment. He doesn’t have to punish every single American and half the free world.

All he has to do is his goddamned job.

All Congress has to do, the most effective way to curb the President’s use of executive orders, is their job. Pass a bill. If these petulant obstructionist jackholes had put one tenth the effort into making government work as they do into gumming it up, we’d have effective long term immigration reform, we’d have a workable energy policy, we’d have fair and intelligent tax reform, we’d have a balanced budget, we’d have healthcare that worked for everybody and that we could all afford.

My granddaughter wants one of those “American Girl” dolls, and they cost a whole bunch more than 20 years ago when my daughters wanted one (& didn’t get)

My niece finds them on ebay and various swap sites—some are new, some “lightly” used. (I’m embarrassed to say that her twins have 17 American Girl dolls between them—but all but 3 of them were previously owned.)
