Not verified, but someone just posted this.

CNN is reporting that the NYT was told Wilson was not told to turn himself in as of 2 hours ago.

Not that I’d be surprised.

2 psddluva4evah  Nov 24, 2014 5:24:47pm

Regardless of the decision (and ya’ll know what we expect), I feel the need to go to my sister’s and hug the hell out of my 16 year old nephew! And then head to my cousin’s house to hold on tight to my 2 godsons (18 & 14)

I also see the family of Mike Brown has asked for a 4.5 second moment of silence after the decision is read, no matter the outcome.

What’s galling is once again, all this is just so that Mike Brown’s killer has to stand trial. Not even a conviction, just a darn trial!

Like I said, the writing has been on the wall for weeks. This prosecutor didn’t want an indictment so he did what he had to do to ensure he didn’t get one.

Because just like everything else, the FPD can’t even do a grand jury announcement right.

They’ve botched a routine jaywalking incident. Botched the investigation of an officer involved shooting. Mishandled a grand jury indictment.

And now mishandling the announcement of whatever they’ve come up with.

All for maximum effect with a police department that has blood on its hands - and has a reckless disregard for the civil liberties of peaceful protesters.

I have no doubt that if there is violence, it will be blown out of proportion by the media and police - who will be itching to volley tear gas at them for displaying any anger for being upset at the justice system failing them again.

And all within a few miles of where Dred Scott met his match with a racist justice system. The more things change.

Hey all. I am really sickened by all this. Not to bust on anyone here, but the fact such a sad incident is being turned into a television viewing event just guts me. The big TV people are using this for ratings.

Ratings.

God this country’s priorities are all out of whack.

One thing that really concerns me, and isn’t being mentioned is what about other cities in America? This could turn the heat up in many major cities. Consider Cleveland Ohio. They just had a similar incident yesterday. How will they react? LA. DC. Newark, Chicago…on and on.

I admit, I am a bit concerned here in Columbus. I live in what many call the bad part of town. I can see East Main Street here in Columbus getting a bit crazy. Who the hell knows. The amount of frustration in the African American communities is extremely high. I live less than a block off of E. Main. Should I be concerned? I really don’t know.

Damn, This all sucks so bad. America used to be the land of the free. I don’t think a lot of people are feeling very free.

The grand jury spoke, and we have to abide by what they did. It wasn’t my fault (even though it totally was) that an indictment wasn’t handed down because the evidence didn’t support it (while I have no problem indicting a ham sandwich and anyone in the Ferguson community who so much as breathes on a police officer the wrong way (or drops their own blood on a Ferguson police officer after those officers beat the person senseless).

Oh, and blame the community for any violence. Blame them for any violence and not a police department armed for bear.

Really?

An awful lot that the Brits did in India and Kenya was pretty fucking irredeemably evil.

Compared to the worst that we humans have done? Had Gandhi gone up against a German occupation of India he would have had spring loaded guillotine and an unmarked grave. Any one that protested would have gotten the same. See The White Rose for the courage of real examples.

The Brits were no saints. They were still no where as evil as they could have been.

124 Justanotherhuman  Nov 24, 2014 6:05:00pm

There’s some logic to it.

I wrote that comment under a little duress. You are right, I should have America is supposed to be the land of the free.

re: #114 jamesfirecat

the only thing that worked agains the British was world opinion, whch they actually did care about.

What happend in Kenya should have gone before the Hague.

Caroline Elkins, a professor at Harvard, spent nearly 10 years compiling the evidence contained in her book Britain’s Gulag: the Brutal End of Empire in Kenya. She started her research with the belief that the British account of the suppression of the Kikuyu’s Mau Mau revolt in the 1950s was largely accurate. Then she discovered that most of the documentation had been destroyed. She worked through the remaining archives, and conducted 600 hours of interviews with Kikuyu survivors - rebels and loyalists - and British guards, settlers and officials. Her book is fully and thoroughly documented. It won the Pulitzer prize. But as far as Sandbrook, James and other imperial apologists are concerned, it might as well never have been written.

Elkins reveals that the British detained not 80,000 Kikuyu, as the official histories maintain, but almost the entire population of one and a half million people, in camps and fortified villages. There, thousands were beaten to death or died from malnutrition, typhoid, tuberculosis and dysentery. In some camps almost all the children died.

The inmates were used as slave labour. Above the gates were edifying slogans, such as “Labour and freedom” and “He who helps himself will also be helped”. Loudspeakers broadcast the national anthem and patriotic exhortations. People deemed to have disobeyed the rules were killed in front of the others. The survivors were forced to dig mass graves, which were quickly filled. Unless you have a strong stomach I advise you to skip the next paragraph.

Interrogation under torture was widespread. Many of the men were anally raped, using knives, broken bottles, rifle barrels, snakes and scorpions. A favourite technique was to hold a man upside down, his head in a bucket of water, while sand was rammed into his rectum with a stick. Women were gang-raped by the guards. People were mauled by dogs and electrocuted. The British devised a special tool which they used for first crushing and then ripping off testicles. They used pliers to mutilate women’s breasts. They cut off inmates’ ears and fingers and gouged out their eyes. They dragged people behind Land Rovers until their bodies disintegrated. Men were rolled up in barbed wire and kicked around the compound.

Anything can become a television viewing event. Twenty years ago every network broadcast two hours of OJ Simpson being driven around Los Angeles in a white Ford Bronco. It’s minimum-effort journalism at it finest.

This is a life or death situation. As it is in any civil rights event.

We’re always one step forward, two steps back, it seems, when it comes to civil rights for anyone except straight, white people. And I’m a straight, white person saying that.

I did a research paper about appeasement in the 1930s and one of the surprising things I learned was that Britain was factoring in their ability to protect their Far Eastern interests from the Japanese when they were rolling over to (first) Mussolini in Ethiopia and later Germany in Czechoslovakia and Austria. If they went to war too soon (to stop Hitler and save the lives of untold millions) they would have basically abandoned the Far East Empire.

Ultimately Britian cared about world opinion in a way the Nazis didn’t would not have.

That does nothing to obviate the utter evil that was perpetrated there and then deliberately hidden (many documents wered dumped at sea from aircraft according to participants).

Ultimately, human capacity for cruelty and barbarism (see the September massacres, 1792, France for a nasty lesson) is not confined to “those other people” and the British in Kenya were no better then the SS in the Ukraine.

re: #149 Aunty Entity Dragon

Out of one Dachau, perhaps. Not compared to the 20,000 camps the Germans built:

When the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum first began to document all of the camps, the belief was that the list would total approximately 7,000. However, researchers found that the Nazis had actually established about 20,000 camps between 1933 and 1945.

I don’t have to minimize the Brits to know they are nowhere near as evil as they might have been. I say that with 800 years of my Welsh ancestors watching carefully.

re: #135 alpuzzzzz (I, R & sometimes why?)

No. I stand by it. What might have happened did not happen. Good. But with tensions as high as they were, the possibility could not have been ruled out in advance.

The very last thing this country needs is more fatalities out of this. Any precaution that reduces the likelihood of that is just as well.

I’ll just put this here very clearly: your comment has some very nasty racist undertones. If you don’t see them, I suggest you look more carefully.

If you’re not embarrassed by that, well, that says something too.
