His Fraudulent Story Exposed, Jim Hoft Tries to Edit History

Right wing blogger ethics
Wingnuts • Views: 40,918

Right wing blogger Jim Hoft’s bogus claim on August 19 that officer Darren Wilson suffered an “orbital blowout fracture of the eye socket” at the hands of Michael Brown was shared on Facebook almost 900,000 times, and Hoft has continued to relentlessly repeat this claim for months, in post after rabble-rousing post at Gateway Pundit.

Then, the photos of Darren Wilson’s real facial injuries were released (and showed only very slight reddening on one side of his face):

“Severe facial contusions?”

How does the Stupidest and Most Unethical Man on the Internet react? By going back to that original post and completely wiping it out, even changing the title: UPDATE: Officer Darren Wilson Suffered Severe Facial Contusions After Severe Beating During Mike Brown Attack | the Gateway Pundit.

Notice that the URL still contains the original title: “breaking-report-po-darren-wilson-suffered-orbital-blowout-fracture-to-eye-socket-during-encounter-with-mike-brown”.

The new text he added:

THIS POST WAS UPDATED ON NOVEMBER 24, 2014

The medical report was released after the jury decision was announced.

Darren Wilson suffered severe contusions after he was beat in the head by Michael Brown.

The police Report is here.

We previously reported that Officer Wilson suffered and [sic] orbital eye-socket fracture. It now appears he suffered severe bruising but no fracture.

Here’s a screenshot of Hoft’s original post:

And here’s what it looks like now:

So rather than publishing a retraction in a new post people won’t miss, Hoft has hidden his acknowledgment that he was pushing a fake story in a 4-month old post he thinks almost no one will see, and still vastly exaggerates Wilson’s injuries as “severe facial contusions” from a “severe beating.”

“Sleazy” doesn’t even begin to describe this. It’s a completely unacceptable way to correct a false story that has done an incredible amount to poison the well of public opinion.

I looked at all those photos of Wilson from the hospital, and I just don’t see it. I know it takes a while for a bruise to really look bad (former hockey goalie), but there would be more than that for something really painful.

How Many Commenters Did We Block After the Ferguson Decision Last Night?

If there is one thing that 4chan users and Facebook users have in common besides fatuousness and illiteracy, it is a fondness for sharing their thoughts about race and criminal justice in the comment sections of gawker.com.

And so the very worst of the internet dropped by last night to “Actually,” us all to death about Michael Brown and Darren Wilson, posting unreconstructed racist bile, gross and offensive images, and undirected seething hate.

Luckily, we now have a flagging system to help readers identify and call to our attention bad posts. For those of us with blocking capability it felt a bit—as one editor put it—like “slaying orcs outside the Black Gate.” But: How many orcs did we actually slay?

From the turn of the 20th century until the 1930s, terrifying tales of “giant negroes” popped up regularly.”

And of course, Wilson’s assumption is that some other officer, one who would have been alerted by Wilson’s call for assistance, an officer that might have favored non-lethal interventions—an officer that maybe could mace Brown because his hands weren’t in the way or who didn’t find tasers “uncomfortable”—could have incapacitated Brown. But no. That couldn’t happen. Wilson made the decision that Michael Brown had to die, based on the fact that he was big and that he caused a level of bruising on Wilson’s face that would occur if you he accidentally bumped into something, and that Brown might do something similar to someone else.

Wilson knows the law, specifically that a cop may kill a fleeing suspect if they believe they might be a danger to others or the community. And I’m sure whichever legal council he’s been receiving since the shooting made sure the emphasize in any testimony he gave that he believed Brown was a threat to others even when fleeing.

Like I said, I’m sure that his legal counsel made sure to emphasize he get that info to the jury. I’ve not looked through the transcripts, but I’ve no doubt McCollough informed the GJ at one time or another about what a cop can do under the law even when a suspect is fleeing. As I read more and more, I reach two conclusions: The GJ was a joke and it did what McCullough wanted, namely it’s providing a smokescreen to say “All the evidence was looked at and they saw no reason for a trial!”

Except a GJ isn’t about looking at all the evidence, it’s about looking at enough to establish probable cause, a very easy hurdle to clear. Hence why prosecutors don’t bring exculpatory evidence, like witnesses with contradictory statements, experts to interpret physical evidence as supporting the defendant, or evidence about the victim that makes them unsympathetic.

When Corey brought charges against Zimmerman, it mollified the populace. When the trial ended in acquittal, it was on her and on the police department for screw-ups in the investigation and prosecution. Here? Here it was a con-job from Day One, a cover-up that leaves us without a verdict, just a prosecutor siding with the defendant and taking every step he can to assure that this never goes to trial. You’re not going to mollify people who believe the system corrupt and unanswerable to them by making a show of protecting your own.

86 lawhawk  Nov 25, 2014 12:34:14pm

BTW, if Brown struck Wilson in the head as claimed (and as WaPo slide 4 indicates here), why is the redness on the opposite side of Wilson’s face?

If you’re driving, your left side is facing the driver’s side window. Yet, whatever redness indicated in the photos Charles included from the released evidence above are present on his right side.

Even if Wilson turned his head to face Brown directly, you’d get at most a glancing blow. And it still doesn’t explain the reach into the car, the alleged struggle for the gun in the car, or Wilson’s actions thereafter.

And Gawker points out how the WaPo piece takes Wilson’s position for granted and makes Brown appear to be aggressor throughout, ignoring other witnesses indicating that his hands were up.

McCullogh(sp) better hope the media and other Very Serious People move on quickly from its GJ data dump before they come across too many more items like this.

CNN assured us last night they would examine all of the documents. I have no doubt their reporting will be fair and balanced.

Interesting bit from this article here. Wilson offering testimony without being asked? Is that a thing in a grand jury?

Did he actually call for backup, or did he call it in after he killed Brown?

I haven’t looked through it all but from reading some blog posts it appears he did make a quick call for backup.

For God’s sake, LGF even located the unaltered scan on Hoft’s servers. That’s like finding cake frosting all over the face of your unaware child as he swears he never touched the cake. Hoft not only lied, he claimed to have evidence which turned out to be completely manufactured. There is no viable free-speech argument here; Hoft should be in jail.

But then, he’s not the only one.
