It comes across as a guy who’s been coached on what to say and what to emphasize. Of course, it doesn’t help that there were never a written report from Wilson himself, which could be compared to his police interview and his grand jury testimony.

7 William Barnett-Lewis  Nov 26, 2014 2:26:07pm

All that supposedly happened in the 90 seconds from the time he stopped his squad car till the time Brown was lying dead in the street?

No wonder the GJ took so long, probably needed that much time to be coached enough.

I’m sure there’s nothing to see here either:

A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officer who fired his gun at an unarmed suspect during a traffic stop Monday night will not be placed on leave, a JSO spokesperson said Tuesday.

Officer J.C. Garcia drew and fired his weapon under the mistaken belief that the driver was holding a gun. In fact, Brian Dennison, 29, was unarmed, and had his 6-year-old daughter in the car with him.

[…]

According to Cook, Dennison was speeding after 9 p.m. because he was rushing home to get medication for his daughter, who had begun suffering an asthma attack. “She’s got really bad allergies,” Cook said.

It’s all just lawyered up boilerplate. The defense in the possible civil case is well underway. Branding this guy as a civil protector of us all, weasel words crafted around language that police use to justify whatever they do wrong.

You still haven’t identified the purpose of the question. Do you really believe it was to ignore the call, if he turned out to be white, as the twitterer suggested?

The version that it was for id purposes, esp. since she asked this immediately after “what does he look like” seems obvious.

56 Pawn of the Oppressor  Nov 26, 2014 3:15:41pm

Didn’t have any other choices? Wrong… So very wrong.

Just off the top of my head:

Why start off an encounter with an alleged thief/assault suspect with an asinine, aggressive command to not walk in the street?

Why confront two possible criminals alone in the first place? Especially if one of them is a Giant Demon Negro?

He was in an SUV, so he had an advantage: A 5,000 lb. escape vehicle ready to go. Getting into and out of a car or rolling up to somebody while belted in puts you at a DISadvantage though. So he’s immediately giving up the security he does have by closing up, or allowing Brown & his friend to close.

Did the SUV have a loud hailer?

What the hell was he doing getting close enough to be grabbed?

He feared for his life and felt like he was being punched to death by Black Godzilla Ali, yet all those punches left marks that looked only slightly worse than mild razor burn? Seriously??

Anybody who knows even basic, basic self-defense principles - which police should know - should look at this outcome and smell something rotten…

Never mind what a complete bag of dicks you have to be to say “I’d do it again the same way”. Not exactly the best and brightest, I’m afraid. Yup, I’m passing judgment.

If a person is to be identified, I do expect the skin color to be a part of the description (unless we’re talking about a very “homogeneous” society), just as any other more obvious characteristics (clothes, individual “marks”, whatever). That this may lead to certain tragic consequences in more racist societies is neither here nor there when it comes to the question of whether or not to include it in the description. If a racist cop is gonna shoot a black person, they will shoot them after id’ing them by clothes. No diff there.

It’s the question of the inadequacy of labels, and it’s a fair question. I think 100% “hit” is not necessary for a police description. “Close enough” will do. Not to mention that non-“quantitative” labels such as “Hispanic” are not really descriptive, since Hispanics can be white and black too, and “Asians” can include anyone from Japanese to Pakistanis.

As for the effects of this, I guarantee that the same cops would have shot the boy without knowing his race in advance.

94 lawhawk  Nov 26, 2014 3:47:07pm

Of the witnesses who claimed to have seen something (not NA but a yes or no) 15 said that they saw Wilson firing on Brown as Brown ran away, which would mean that he fired with intent to hit Brown in the back.

Kind of makes it tough to claim that Wilson didn’t intend to shoot Brown in the back. It’s just that Wilson missed and only hit Brown when he was closer, when he had his hands up, and as he was likely falling down from multiple gunshot wounds in order to sustain the shot on the top of his head.

There was a split on whether Brown was kneeling when Wilson fired on him.

There was a split on whether Wilson fired on Brown when Brown was already on the ground.

Parsing through all this evidence only makes it more clear that McCullough did what he could to avoid an indictment when so many witnesses corroborated each other in that Wilson engaged in an extrajudicial killing. Firing on Brown when his hands were up. Some seeing him firing on Brown while Brown was kneeling or on the ground.

But none of it matters because the GJ didn’t return an indictment. And that’s on McCullough.

re: #92 Islamo-Masonic Vourdalak

It’s the question of the inadequacy of labels, and it’s a fair question. I think 100% “hit” is not necessary for a police description. “Close enough” will do. Not to mention that non-“quantitative” labels such as “Hispanic” are not really descriptive, since Hispanics can be white and black too, and “Asians” can include anyone from Japanese to Pakistanis.

As for the effects of this, I guarantee that the same cops would have shot the boy without knowing his race in advance.

They wouldn’t have shot him in less than 2 seconds, while the squad car was still rolling if he had been white.

Yes, but there was conflicting testimony, so obviously they couldn’t see fit to…you know, put the testimony that supported him to the side long enough to secure an indictment, but instead just dumped it all on the grand jury and left them to decide for themselves if charges were warranted.

An apology would be an admission that he did something wrong, and I think we’ve established pretty well by this point that he doesn’t think he did anything wrong that day. In his mind, everything that happened that day was Brown’s fault and thus he’s totally blameless. I imagine he tells himself and others, in the privacy of closed doors, that Brown “brought it on himself.”

I thought there was only one human race with many variations.

Technically there are too many overlapping traits between psuedo-groups for any realistic definition of race. The only valid differentiation is for medical specifics and even they span any artificial groups we may define.

However, humans don’t look at DNA when deciding who belongs in the out/in group, they look at visual traits. Practitioners of Wingnutism are highly group concious and only smart enough to see colours and eye shape. Since they can and do cause pain to others we have no choice but to recognize skin colour, irrelevant as it really is, as a Wingnut hate trigger.

I have to say I don’t think race is a major factor here. Rather, the difference between the two is that the former actually had his department recommend to McCulloch that charges be filed. Estonia’s authorities report that the violence started around 21:20 (EEST, UTC+3), as the protesters started to assault the policemen.[75][82] Riot police responded by using water cannon and, according to BBC, firing tear gas to disperse the crowd.[83] However, the crowd did not disperse and started committing acts of vandalism and rampant looting[84][85] of nearby shops and buildings. By midnight the riots had spread around the centre of Tallinn, with massive damage to property—a total number of 99 cases of vandalism, including cars that had been turned upside down, broken and looted shop windows, pillaged bars and kiosks.[86][87]

[…]

The night of April 27 saw a recurrence of violence, with a second night of rioting. Rioters used Molotov cocktails while police responded with CS gas, rubber bullets and watercannons.[5] Rioting and looting in a few towns of North East Estonia (mainly Jõhvi) with a Russian majority, were also reported.[5] Estonian sources attributed the disruptions to youths consuming stolen alcohol. In all, some 1,000 people were detained in two nights of rioting. 156 were injured, including some two dozen police officers, and numerous stores, offices and homes were damaged.[96]

All over a bronze monument.

If not race then why is it you think the black cop fell on the wrong side of that line? I’m willing to concede that part of the reason the department rallied behind Wilson was because the stakes were so high, and cops in general have a perpetual hard on about “officer safety.” But I’m also not credulous enough to believe Wilson’s treatment would have been the same if he’d been Black and/or Brown had been White.

Perhaps I should rephrase, I don’t think it was a major factor in McCulloch’s bringing charges. The department threw him to the wolves, and race may have been a factor. But it seems McCulloch is such good friends with the department that he takes them at their word, that if charges are warranted, then he doesn’t even bother with a grand jury.

stltoday.com

It gets worse. Obviously, “witnesses” are to be believed in this incident.

“Video surveillance and information from witnesses helped make the case against Gore, authorities say. Authorities said they won’t release the video to reporters because it is evidence in the case. The video showed Gore and Wilson on the platform, but the alleged attack took place out of the view of the camera, authorities say.

“Neither Wilson nor Gore could be reached for comment. Court records did not yet list an attorney for Gore.

Then, they pretty much tell where Gore lives:

“Gore lives in the 5500 block of Pershing Avenue. Wilson was staying at a hotel in Bridgeton at the time of the incident.” More

I didn’t eliminate the multiple interviewees, nor did I leave out Wilson from the count.

Yeah, but multiple interviews != as many witnesses ;)

Yeah it was pretty quick.

Though in the end it at least doesn’t change the percentage (55%), quite by chance.

Consistency between the 1st and 2d interviews is relevant (but does inflate the overall count). Especially since Wilson’s multiple inconsistencies between his initial statements and the GJ statements.

Agreed, but that’s another aspect of it. It’s still 22 witnesses in the end, and it’s wrong of PBS to suggest otherwise.

The Rethink Homelessness Pledge

A walk through the streets of Central Florida makes one message clear: our community suffers from a crisis around those without a home of their own. We are seeing growing numbers of those who are chronically homeless and a rising tide of our “invisible” homeless, individuals and families living in hotel rooms and shelters who do not have a permanent place to call home.

The Central Florida Commission on Homelessness exists to engage the public on the issue of homelessness and to illustrate that Orlando’s problem is everyone’s problem. Whether you see homeless citizens daily or hear about those who live on the streets on the news, our job is to remind you that this situation cannot be ignored. We must come together to implement community-based solutions to empower Central Floridians in Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties to take action.

re: #201 Justanotherhuman

We just had two cases here in Atlanta make the news, homeless people, wrapped in blankets, shot to death. One was a few weeks ago, the other more recent I think. As I said, I’m avoiding the news as much as I can because I can’t take it anymore.

There are a couple of places I’ve read about that are building those tiny houses, around 450-500 square ft., for homeless people. The programs seem to be working and are certainly safer and more cost effective than just leaving people to die on the streets.

I’m sorry, but if you’re going to say this is the best country in the world, then by god, there shouldn’t be people hungry and homeless and murdered for just being those things. I challenge all the assholes who bitch about how “those people” are the ruin of us all to get off their asses and DO something constructive, come up with a fucking plan to help. Be like that Jesus guy you like to say guides your life. Otherwise, STFU, and then fuck off.

Priorities. When cops are accused of being reckless with other people’s lives, they whine: but we must think about our safety, so even if a cop makes a mistake that costs someone’s life, it’s OK. Fuck no. You must think about the “civilians’” safety first. Yeah, it’s not easy. Not up to it, don’t be a cop.

Um, no, I didn’t count by the tweet (the pic is the same anyway). It’s still 12 hands up and 22 total. (We’re not talking about the number of witness statements. We’re talking about the number of witnesses.)

Well, I guess that’s true if one of the variations is that humans of African descent are always subservient to humans of Caucasian descent. That’s a very popular view in this country these (and all) days.

I raised all three of my kids to respond “Other” to the race question and write in “Human.”
