I know it’s been a rough time for a lot of people in a lot of ways recently, so here’s a reminder that there are pretty things in life too. Don’t forget to remember the positive.

The last update was a while back, so here you can see where we’re at now.

Based on the hand in the lower right, that appears to be about 12” wide. A tapestry of some sort?

Actually clocks in at about 9” wide. Counted cross stitch, I started this piece in June with a little bit of overlap on the one I finished then.

The final piece will look like this.

From the article linked:

The report released Wednesday morning listed Rice as a “victim” and the injured girl under the “other” category. Later in the day, police changed the listing of Rice to “suspect.” They did not provide additional information or immediately respond to a request for comment.

Rice’s driving history in Minnesota includes three drunken driving convictions, with the most recent coming in 2003, according to court records. He’s also been convicted of driving with an open liquor bottle, and driving after his license was canceled and in violation of restrictions placed on his license. The most recent of these convictions came in early 2008.

I just made the corn pudding with HGTV Property Brothers in the background. I have to put love into that dish. HGTV is a guaranteed smile, because at the end everyone is happy. That’s the script. And its good.

Dinner tonight is going to be chili over baked potatoes, assuming I can get my act together and start cooking either.

Made my great aunt’s Chicken & Rice. A couple of chicken thighs, 2 cups rice, one cup milk, 2 cans Cream of Mushroom soup, 1 can Cream of Chicken or Celery soup. Mix well, cover with foil, bake at 325 for 2 ~ 3 hours. Serious comfort food.

Work tonight, have breakfast with my son & ex, Turkey at the local diner (free for all that day) then bed till working again tomorrow night.

I had roast beef on homemade bread. I’m still working on the roast from earlier this week, and now I’ve got a pork loin and all the fixings to fix up for Thanksgiving tomorrow. I’m hoping that the folks who said they would come by are, or I’m going to have way too much food. (already did 2 pies, pumpkin and apple (good quality frozen ones, so that doesn’t count as cooking). Pie is alway good however.

We are doing grilled gruyere and olive tapenade sandwiches with a lemon Caesar salad.

A lot of apathy and lack of decision on what we were doing for Thanksgiving played into this decision.

23 Lidane  Nov 26, 2014 6:37:36pm

So my holiday plans got ruined today.

The company I work for is effectively a call center, handling outsourced sales for other companies. The team I got transferred to a month ago handles large,Enterprise-level commercial sales for a cable company. Today, I had a manager flippantly make a remark about someone from our team working Friday to handle inbound business. This made no sense and I ignored it at first. Tomorrow and Friday are paid company holidays. Why would anyone on my team be working?

Turns out that when they renegotiated the contract with the cable company I sell for, they agreed to have us work the cable company’s hours. That means someone working on the day after Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve. None of the managers explained this although one swears up and down he told us. Problem is no one remembered that conversation and it wasn’t made clear.

Long story short— I now have to work Friday. I’m pissed because my plans to go out of town are ruined. I had rented a car to travel and had to cancel it. I got most of my money refunded except a holding fee. My aunt and uncle are pissed because I need to pick up my cat from mom’s house and they were expecting me to do it this weekend. Plus they helped pay for the car rental, so they’re right to be angry.

At least I used all this nonsense to talk my managers into giving me a three day weekend before Christmas to make up for losing the car and because I can’t see my mom or get my cat this weekend. I also get another paid day off for working on Black Friday. I’m using it at Christmas to get a five-day weekend. Don’t come between me and my time off, dammit. :-P

We go hard-core. At 0530 I start a 6.3 hr grilling of a 19 lb turkey in a Webber kettle. It’s been a family tradition since the Army-issue oven zapped out in our quarters in Korea.

re: #23 Lidane

I generally like the company I work for. Good people, and generally pretty considerate. However, about every other year so far they massively muck with holiday vacations due to trying to cram project completions into the 4th quarter in order to use budget funds before they go away, or simply due to very aggressive completion schedules.

Just watched a few co-workers get a few planned vacation days negated this week simply due to work load — involvement in 3-4 projects that all have go/no-go decisions coming up in the next two weeks. I was not affected (yet) since I was planning to travel and take extended time off for Christmas. However, I expect pressure to mount shortly to not take some of those days.

re: #23 Lidane

Don’t come between me and my time off, dammit. :-P

Sorry to hear that noise.

I’m having issues with scheduling as well. Today I found out that management at the ski shop fucked the tuners schedules for the next month. My colleague told management that he could only work Monday through Thursday for the next four weeks because he and his brother have to tend to their Christmas tree business. Well, they scheduled him to work on Fridays and Sundays. There’s arrows and names crossed out and random squiggly lines all over a copy of our schedule for the next month.

It’s a drag for all three of us tuners. I’ve told management for years that I need my two days in a row away from the job per week - doesn’t matter what two days - and they’ve accommodated me, until now.

It makes my brain hurt trying to figure out my work schedule for the next month. Oy.

I’ve got raised beds for tomatoes. If I can get organized (and not get locked down by being overly fussy about planning) I’d want to put in more beds just for herbs.

I’ve wanted to cook more Mexican and Thai stuff, so I’m thinking of planting with those cuisines in mind. Papalo, acuyo, the various Thai basils.

Chile peppers are pretty hardy. They just don’t like having wet feet. I did jalapenos and then Thai dragon peppers in my window sill pots in the past few years. The plants lasted about two years each and put out peppers continuously.

A few things to keep in mind for those of the opinion that cricket is some sort of effete, pedestrian, tea-on-the-lawn type pastime.
1. You’re thinking of croquet, where the viciousness is all psychological.
2. This is a game AUSTRALIANS think is worth playing.
3. A fast delivery is as quick as a fast pitch in baseball.
4. The ball is about the same size and weight as a baseball.
5. The ball is permitted to bounce, which coupled with spin makes it less predictable than a baseball.
6. The batsman is standing inside the “strike zone”.

I reported the criminal histories of Tamir Rice’s parents to put the 12-year-old boy’s life into context. The histories did not cause a police officer to shoot Tamir, nor do they justify it. The histories give a glimpse into Tamir’s life. What did he experience growing up? Who were his role models? Did he have past interaction with police because of his parents? What were those interactions like? Did he grow up in a gun-owning household? How did he come to be randomly aiming a real-looking gun outside a Cleveland recreation center? This context matters.”

Nope. The worst possible thing to do is to drive unpopular opinions underground.

I want pro-lifers screaming from every rooftop and plastering their propaganda posters everywhere.

I want urban redneck idiots hanging Truck Nutz off the never-used trailer hitch on their Ford F-350.

I want people who have their identity wrapped up in a “cause” — even if I agree with the cause — sporting 30 bumper stickers on the back of their vehicle.

I want these things because they make it very easy to know which people I should engage with an elevated amount of caution.

What a disgraceful “clarification.”

It’s lazy. It doesn’t think. It doesn’t go beyond the obvious. He didn’t think that there was ANOTHER context: the continued stereotyping of blacks in American society as violent figures. AND IT SAID NOT A SINGLE WORD ABOUT TAMIR RICE AND HOW HE DEALT WITH HIS WORLD.

And those people are stockpiling guns, too. I mean, 9 guns for every 10 of us in the US? WTF? Movies aside, you can only use 1 gun at a time, and I suspect certain organizations are using their some members to arm themselves heavily. My son recently bought a hand gun because he lives in a working class neighborhood that has seen some burglaries and recently had a confrontation with some crack addicts who live 2 doors down (including their pit bull). Sadly, one of those crack addicts is a woman he had a relationship with in the past when they were young (they’re both in their 50s now). He’s seen so many of his contemporaries die and/or succumb to addiction, it’s truly sad.

Come, come, now. You need a long-range sniper rifle to pick off those pesky federal agents, a semi-automatic to combat crackhead home invasions and a pistol for concealed carry so you can prevent public shootings by quickly taking out the perpetrator without harming anyone else.

Germany has no shortage of public holidays: depending on your region, you get New Year’s, Good Friday, Easter Monday, May 1st, Pentecost Monday, the Feast of the Ascension, Corpus Christi (the latter two always fall on a Thursday, so most folks just take a day off and make a long weekend of it), October 3rd (Reunification Day), and two-and-a-half days for Christmas. And Bavarians also get Epiphany and The Ascension of the Virgin.

This on top of your (legal minimum) 20+ days of vacation (the standard is usually between 27-30 days).

The Europeans have a better concept of vacation than most companies in the USA do. Only teachers, professors and students get vacations of decent lengths in the USA.

Meanwhile, here in the China, workers get about two weeks’ vacation (Spring Festival and National Holiday/Mid-Autumn Festival), plus a few scattered one-day holidays. Everyone gets the same days off, so you can imagine the crush in the train and bus terminals. Academics like me have it better. This winter holiday will be 8 weeks long! And it’s paid!

Yeah, the kids get 3 days off this week, and it reminded me of the time when my own were small and how much it cost for extra care and/or scrambling to find someone to mind them. I used to work extra days (when it was allowed) during holidays and vacation to pay for it.

On the other hand, most Europeans cannot afford the luxury of having a house with a pool in the backyard, and most of Europe is too crowded to have accessible recreation areas for a weekend getaway: they need time to travel.

It is a cultural thing, Americans who want time off instead of amassing more material possessions are seen as suspect.

Unfortunately, some outside the US are envious of the “stuff” they see promoted here (which most people I know could never afford) and want the same shit.

If I were on my own, I’d live in the smallest place I could find, as long as there was green all around. US politicians spend a lot of time promoting “family values”, which really means “interfering in what consenting adults do for fun in private and in their spare time”, whereas Europe understands that “family values” means valuing families enough to give parents time off to spend with their families and the opportunity to raise and educate their kids.

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!

The Feline Overlords don’t like the parade that it going by a block over. The floats are sort of interesting to watch, but I don’t think they like the constant bass beat from all the marching bands. Probably reminds them of thunderstorms.

Cup of tea for me, and then on to making croutons and cooking bacon as prep for full dishes later in the day.

Wow. I hope they catch the scumbag(s) who started that fire and I also hope that a lot of scumbags get exposed during the investigation.

Back on topic: I’m kind of in the ‘boycott black friday’ camp. The only shopping I’m going to do this weekend is at a pottery sale that The Purple Door Potters put together every Thanksgiving weekend. Also a stop at The Electric Fetus, the venerable independent hippy goods shop that is also (not-so-arguably) the best record store in the Twin Cities.

I’m having dinner with some friends who like to have 100% control of the cooking, which is more than fine with me. I’ve been asked to bring Hagen Daz Vanilla ice cream - no substitutions. Everyone else brings wine, but I don’t drink so I’m on my own for a beverage.

My too-big-to-fail employer gives 200 hours (5 weeks) vacation/sick time after 10 years. (I’ve been there 16.) Then there are the eight holidays, but this is for full time employees. Part-timers only get some, and contractors, well, they don’t get paid for any days they take off.

My Facebook list of friends are going to get smaller. White people’s laments and tut tutting about Ferguson and rioting/looting are too much for this lizard to bear.

Lull. Most food prep done. Just have to wait a bit and then the rotation of things going into the oven starts.

Time enough for a refreshing beverage and to watch a bit on football.

The karaoke band I play with in NYC just made Number 3 in the top 20 covers of Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ - although having a movie star fronting the band probably helped some.

Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Ok, which one was your band? I can’t find the karaoke band?

I’ve stayed off Facepalm for the past week because I saw one person defending Darren Wilson, and that was enough.

I’m being kind in this regard so far since it’s pretty obvious from some of the posts that they’ve bought the media and Ferguson PD narrative hook, line, and sinker. Like I posted the other day it is going to be the predominant viewpoint you hear since most people don’t care to delve deeper or believe that there might be more to it.

Scientists under the delusion that Spielberg is about anything other than money:

‘Jurassic World’ Dinosaurs Stuck in the 1980s, Experts Grumble

‘Jurassic World’ Skips Science, Goes for Nostalgia

The movie is being made to sell a new round of merchandise to kids. It means nothing more.

This whole thing is addressed in the trailer itself. The story is that a corporation came in and finally got Jurassic Park right using the originally engineered dinosaurs from the first go-round at Isla Nublar (from the first book/movie). They didn’t change anything, they took the originals and made them marketable commodities. Now the park has been open for years and people are tired of the same old, same old so they take it upon themselves to engineer some kind of new, never before seen dinosaur (which of course also doesn’t exist in nature) to keep park attendance up. They lose control of it. Chaos ensues.

Moreso than that, the original dinosaurs of Jurassic Park were never meant to be AUTHENTIC REPLICAS of the living things. They were genetically engineered to be different from the beginning (all female, lysine deficient and so forth).

Yes, I’m a JP fan. :P

Well, I wouldn’t say it’s non-partisan, exactly. ;) But LGF tolerates reasoned debate over issues.

Just a drive by to wish a Very Happy Thanksgiving to one and all. This is an island of reason in an ocean of shit, a friend without Facebook, and a wealth of facts and ideas in a seemingly unending desert. I like to think the world was always nuts. We just have the ability to see further today. Information is not wisdom, and what is fair is not always right, and what is right is not always fair. Thanks for letting me be me. Find you, and love you for you. The rest is easy. Nothing is perfect. None.
“May those who love us love us. And those that don’t love us, may God turn their hearts. And if He doesn’t turn their hearts, may he turn their ankles, so we’ll know them by their limping.”

Happy Thanksgiving all! The Trader Joes brined turkey is in the oven, made the pumpkin pie and mashed potatoes yesterday. Simple salad to be prepared just before serving. We (Wife, son, and dog) are just enjoying each others company. No extended family, everyone has either run off and/or been alienated by our hippy ways, so I’ll vicariously enjoy your experiences today.

As much as I am happy to be with family this Thanksgiving, with all the things that have been going on across the board health-wise, but it’s all tempered with the sense that we are forever outsiders in America. Not only as an immigrant family, but as simple people with empathy. My father has seen his fellow classmates and colleagues, who are all 1st generation immigrants themselves, become more callous, and yes, racist. And as I become more radicalized and convinced that there is an unmistakable racist core in this country, it feels like nearly everyone else is simply doubling down and becoming more callous, more racist, more insular, and more unwilling to entertain the idea that the ‘other’ can be anything more than a monster.

Empathy is a sin in this country now, and the darker you are, the more undeserving you are of being treated like you belong. As 90% of the country has immediately swallowed the Wilson line, as we seem on the cusp of a mass demand of ‘close the border’, as we seem in the middle of a lovefest for the GOP and the constant demonization of Obama and anyone who dare speak out against power, I feel…powerless. Helpless. I find any attempt at justice, any attempt to fight back simply results in the bastards gaining more ground, more people turning away and becoming more callous, and more convinced that ‘otherism’ is right and righteous.

I’m thankful for family….but that’s about all I can be left thankful for. I hope for the best for my family, but that’s all I feel like I can hope for anymore, since it seems like hoping for any more simply means everyone else double backs the other way that much harder.

It’s definitely easy to get disheartened by all the subtle and not so subtle racism and otherism (good word), but perhaps be heartened that there are still people out here who are empathetic and see this as a nation of immigrants and “others” who don’t hew to the “seal the borders” conservative bullshit narrative. A lot of them congregate here, online.

Peace to you and yours.

I want to take heart in that, but I’ve seen too many people I know, in the meatworld and online, who I respected and thought had their heads on, quickly double back into the right-wing morass after one event and never come back. Ferguson alone seemed to increase that number exponentially as the ‘truth’ of Wilson’s testimony convinced so many people of the true threat of ‘thuggery’ and lead them to condemn damn near everyone who took Brown’s side. Between that and the folks who just go ‘both sides same thing’ and treat them as all equally bad, I just don’t have that hope anymore. It’s increasingly become a fool’s errand to hope.

It’s a fool’s errand not to hope, I believe. There have been times when I have lost hope, but then somehow I have always returned to the fact that without hope, there’s no reason to continue, and that’s just fucking depressing as hell.

Certainly, in the wake of Ferguson, hope seems dim (not to mention in the wake of all the other bullshit floating around in U.S. culture), but somehow, we must keep hope alive, if only to cling along with the sane folks who are still on the life raft.

Hang in there.
