Gov. Sam Brownback Undergoes a Post-Election Conversion on the Kansas Budget

Since we are on the subject of False Witnesses this morning, the Governor of Kansas has apparently had an epiphany.

In October, Brownback dismissed concerns that folks like Goossen raised.

“They’re just trying to paint a Chicken Little sky is falling situation, which is not true,” Brownback said late in the campaign. “It’s a bunch of lies.”

Lies? Brownback now admits that tax increases are on the table.

This week, Goossen said the state must cut $280 million just to end the current fiscal year with a zero balance even though state law requires a cushion. That’s a cut of nearly 5 percent in the state’s general fund. Next year, Brownback and lawmakers have to cut an additional $430 million to wind up at zero again.

Kansas voters are about to experience firsthand the all the joys of “fiscal responsibility” and austerity measures.

Welcome to the unemployment line, Kansas.

You mean to say that decades of experience about how cutting taxes isn’t a job creator? You mean that the Kansas experiment broke the state budget in Kansas? About damn time people realized that.

You mean that people are opening their eyes to the empty promises of the GOP tax cut and shrivel government when people want roads that function, bridges that don’t fall, and an education system that prepares their kids for a future.

No… they’ll still fall for the get something for nothing and voodoo economics. And instead of voting them out of office, they’ll go and keep sending them back to do the crappy jobs they do because they like ‘em. It’s always someone else’s fault that things got stunk up to hell.

Has Sam heard from Grover Norquest yet? There’s always more to cut from the poor. Since they don’t bother to vote anyway, it’s a win-win.

Therefore, if taxes are cut to zero then revenue will be infinite, right?

It’s clear to me that the only reason for Kansas’ budget problems is that Brownback, et al, just didn’t do it hard enough. Conservatism cannot fail, it can only be failed.

We damn better be, because, IMO, just shouting “NEENER NEENER WE TOLD YOU SO!!!” isn’t exactly going to draw a lot of people to our side (sanity). Otherwise, what do we do, just write whole states off?

Appeals to logic, reason, and cold, hard facts don’t always get through thick skulls, but it’s the best we have.

Just wait. Sam will tax the lower middle class at higher rates, because… trickle down&meritocracy.

Part of the problem with the Ferguson PD is they used tickets for revenue and harrasment to run the department. Fee for service. We harrass you if you are poor. You pay. Because God forbid anyone have to pay higher taxes.

When someone jumps in front of a speeding bus and is injured I’m sympathetic. When they continue to jump in front of speeding buses I have to conclude that they are mentally deficient is ways that make them impervious to logic and reason.

There has to come a point when you can only sit back and marvel at how dumb people can be, and I reached that point three weeks ago when I watched millions either vote Republican or not bother showing up. Appeals to logic and reason are all well and good, but sometimes people need to be told they’ve screwed themselves before they’ll learn.

But, of course…Wilson felt he did nothing wrong, so it was basically a big “fuck you” to the Browns and the rest of Ferguson that he didn’t resign prior to the GJ announcement (and another one right now, because he decided to do it over a busy holiday weekend, where it would get buried).

I wonder if he still has his safe house and security detail…

So many people still believe the BS story about Wilson having a broken eye socket, because they heard it on the radio or they say it on the internets. And they say they media has a librul bias? I don’t think so.

Peace among protest: A Portland police officer noticed a 12-year-old boy holding a sign that read “Free Hugs” during a Ferguson demonstration in Oregon. The officer started talking to the boy about the demonstration, school and life. When they were done talking, the officer asked if he was going to get a hug.

The boy teared up — and obliged.

The grand jury reviewed the evidence and decided for no indictment. I was truly surprised. I thought they would. It would have been the easy way out to just kick the can down the road and go to a trial. The GJ couldn’t bring themselves to do that. It would have been my inclination. They did not.

Are 12 average Americans that racist/stupid/gullible? or was the evidence not there? If we had gone to a trial, there would have in likely been an acquittal and we would pretty much be right where we are now.

I truly believe that the financial situation in Kansas isn’t a symptom of conservative ideology - it’s the goal. Cut taxes on the rich to create a budget shortfall, then use the manufactured shortfall as a palatable excuse to gut the social safety net. Priority one? Check. Priority two? Check. Mission accomplished.

61 TedStriker  Nov 29, 2014 4:38:47pm

re: #58 jaunte

The prosecutor did everything in his power to sabotage the process.

All so that the decision to indict wouldn’t be laid on him.

Then, he could try to say, “Sorry, but I tried.”

Frankly, a bunch of bullshit for which, in a just world, would land McCulloch in hot water for prosecutorial misconduct, but that won’t ever happen.

The prosecutor presented a law, in a paper hand out, that had been over ruled by the supreme court in the 80’s (forgive my fact error on date, but it was what it was)

They gave the grand jury a piece of paper that said it was legal to chase down a suspect and kill them. The supreme court of the US of A said no.

They failed to show the GJ the correct law. They failed, except for the fix. With that they WON.

Protests will continue. More and more people are learning the fix.

Yeah, no, a trial might have given some measure of closure to the matter. Witnesses could have been cross-examined and their testimony highlighted for the common elements instead of treated with a shrug about “contradictions,” the investigators and experts called could have been asked to back up their findings and explain why simple things like testing Wilson’s gun for fingerprints or measuring from the car to the body were not carried out, and Wilson would not have been allowed 4 hours to sit on the stand and win over the jurors with his story about a 6’ 4” guy being dwarfed by a 6’ 4” teen.

More importantly, a trial would have resulted in one of three outcomes: acquittal, conviction, or a hung jury. There has to be a unanimous verdict, there can’t be 8 for and 4 against, which may be the case with this grand jury. Without a breakdown of the votes, we’ll never know if the decision not to indict Wilson was unanimous or 8 white jurors siding with the white cop.
