They remind me of some of the great late-70’s fusion bands. There were a lot of really great but little known bands back then. Like Cafe Jacques

For some reason, this reminds me of the joke about the Irish guy who comes home to find his wife in bed with another man. He pulls out a gun and holds it to his temple. His wife laughs at him.

We’re far from the first to notice CCJ’s character flaws. From the Claremont Port Side, November 5th, 2009:

Dan S. says:
November 5, 2009 at 6:08 pm

With all due respect, anybody expecting Charles to use logic is expecting way too much.

It’s very common knowledge at CMC (students, profs, and the administration) that logic or rational thought are not Charles’ best traits. And anybody who has even glanced momentarily at a psych textbook can tell you that his more illustrative traits of hatred, grandiosity, anger, irrationality, pride, narcissism, self-centered greed, name-calling, self-righteousness, close-mindedness, general misanthropic tendencies — all the standard traits that rot the soul and stink the place out for everyone nearby — are rooted in fear and insecurity.

This is not a slam — it’s just how some people are. The only thing we can collectively hope for is that one day he’ll realize what he’s doing — and that the shame and guilt that will inevitably ensue, will not consume him.

OK, let me get this straight. UpChuck is going to hold auctions for “exposing the media frauds.” He’s going to ask the public for money to expose, say, Radley Balko (whom I admire at the moment for his Ferguson reporting). How much money will that take? Are other journalists more valuable? “This auction is for Brian Williams, I’ll need way more money than when I exposed Dave Weigel, Pony up!”

The whole concept is a stupid fever dream. I mean, did I explain it correctly? What the fuck is an auction to expose journalists?

I have a challenge for the other whites here: No more “I just can’t” or “I can’t even” or “I just want to give up” or anything like that in response to stories like this.

All these videos, tweets, and pictures are showing you what blacks have been going through for decades. it might be nice that we can disengage by giving up and ignoring it, but minorities don’t have that luxury. Do not allow yourself that luxury either.

Instead, channel your frustration and anger. Do something about them, even if it’s just writing LTEs and making sure you get the right people in office.

It’s the 150th anniversary of the “Sand Creek Massacre” which occurred in present-day southeastern Colorado. It was one of the more horrific race-based violence that has occurred in the United States.

Col. Chivington - who led the massacre - still has a town in Colorado named after him. At least it’s unincorporated.

Westboro Baptist Church Overloaded with Phone Calls After Turkey Virus Hoax

A satirical news website managed to trick thousands of readers into phoning the Westboro Baptist Church, infamous for its ‘God Hates Fags’ slogan, after telling them that it was the “Turkey Safety Hotline” following an outbreak of avian flu.
The hoax article, ‘Millions of Thanksgiving Turkeys Recalled: Is Your Family Safe?’, was published by the National Report, which describes itself as “a news and political satire web publication, which may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways.” The article claimed that a new strain of avian flu had infected turkeys across the country, putting people at risk over Thanksgiving:

“The CDC has confirmed that millions of turkeys have been recalled due to safety concerns over an avian virus that the birds may be harboring. The virus is related to human influenza virus but was thought to lack the ability to infect humans. However, it appears that the virus has recently developed the ability to move from bird hosts into humans. The results could be disastrous.”

The article then encouraged anyone who had bought a turkey to phone the ‘Turkey Safety Hotline’:

“Individuals that have purchased a turkey from any manufacturer are encouraged to call the Turkey Safety Hotline that has been established in collaboration with the CDC and several major turkey suppliers. The hotline is available 24 hours a day at (xxx) xxx-xxxx.”

Of course, that hotline was in fact the Westboro Baptist Church, who were no doubt rather bemused by the incoming stream of phone calls about turkeys.

Normally I would denounce this as yet another asinine and childish stunt by one of those amateur fake news sites, but, hey, this is the Westboro cult.

UpChuck is beside himself with rage, because the NY Times published (briefly) the home address of Darren Wilson — “putting in danger.” Yet, CCJ himself had no compunction publicizing the home addresses of Ebola victims and their families.

Now, to retaliate against the NY Times in his childish, vindictive way, he’s going after the reporters covering Ferguson on a personal level, including calling them repeatedly and allowing his loyal minions to publish their phone numbers and addresses.

He has no ethics, no morals. He sees every news cycle as a platform to advertise himself as some kind of media god. He’s all about self-aggrandisement. He makes Glenn Greenwald look humble and responsible by comparison.

I trust you saw this:

Why You Shouldn’t Trust Your Cat

As intriguing, though, is what didn’t change in human-friendly cats during those nine millennia. House cats still have the broadest hearing range among carnivores, which allows them to detect their prey’s movement. They also retain their night-vision abilities and the ability to digest high-protein, high-fat diets. This implies that, unlike those of dogs, their genes haven’t evolved to make cats dependent on humans for food.

This indicates only a modest influence of domestication on cat genes, compared with dogs, say the researchers. In fact, according to recent research on canine genomes, dogs became man’s best friend back when humans were still hunting and gathering—between 11,000 and 16,000 years ago. Their typically more omnivorous diets evolved as human lifestyle shifted toward agrarian living.

So why have kitties stayed wilder? The genome-mappers theorize it’s because house cat populations have continued to interbreed with wild cats. Also, humans’ “cat fancy”—meaning, our fanaticism about creating weird cat breeds—only began in the last 200 or so years.

They came for the mice, stayed for the food scraps, and whenever it suited, kept cuddly with the cats from the other side of the granary. In other words, not only are cats still mostly wild, but they also pretty much tamed themselves. Maybe that means humans are “cats’ best friend.”

This. Westboro as a group are public figures, they put themselves out in the public with their picketing and obnoxious signs. They’d have to show actual malice, not just “oh, wouldn’t it be funny if…” to win their case.

On top of that, discovery could be killer.

ETA: Several Westboroites are lawyers, so it’s possible we could see a lawsuit, but still, the actual malice and exposure to discovery are things to consider when suing.

It’s not hard to find remnants of slavery and Civil War history in the greater STL region.

You have the Old Courthouse. Grant’s Home. About 2 hours away you have Lincoln’s home in Springfield IL (and his final resting place). Slavery, civil rights, and the Civil War are never far wherever you looked.

The same issues facing the nation 150 years ago are still with us today. There are people who still think that some people aren’t entitled to full protection under the law. There are some who think that adhering to the Constitution is optional, or that strict adherence to the 2d Amendment makes up for the fact that we should disregard the 13th-15th Amendments, and why those amendments were even necessary.

And the amount of revisionist history abounding over the Civil War and why the states seceded from the Union is no less astounding nor surprising. These people think that they’ve had some right deprived all because an entire class of people have now gotten the same rights they have.

They want to obscure fact that the states that use lethal injection are experimenting on these convicted felons since the availability of the drugs of choice for executions has dried up. But if not for the government making and enforcing the rules on competition monopoly/oligopoly is the logical end of capitalism as we practice it. In such cases no corporation is going to indulge in R&D that endangers its power or bottom line.

Glenn Grothman: Single parents getting ‘bribe’ to avoid work, marriage

U.S. Rep.-elect Glenn Grothman says the government is bribing single parents to stay unemployed and unmarried.

That wording even seemed to catch interviewer Mike Gousha off guard on the Sunday broadcast of the statewide TV news program “UpFront with Mike Gousha.”

In his run for Congress, the Republican state senator from Campbellsport said welfare reform would be his top priority in Washington, and in the interview broadcast Sunday, he said educating the public is a first step.

“So your viewers are aware, a single parent with a couple kids can easily get $35,000 a year in total benefits between the health care and the earned income credit and the FoodShare and the low-income housing and what have you,” Grothman said. “And that’s after taxes. How about some Benghazi to lighten things up:

Analysis: Libyan Air Force claims to have opened western campaign

The Libyan Air Force appears to have carried out its first airstrikes in the west of the country, increasing pressure on the groups that control Tripoli.

The remnants of the Ghadaffi-era air force are loyal to former general Khalifah Haftar, who is leading an alliance of military units and militias against the rival Libya Dawn coalition, which includes Islamist groups. The two sides operate on behalf of competing administrations based, respectively, in the east at Tobruk and in Tripoli.

The air force has been operating several MiG-21 and MiG-23 fighters out of bases in the east and using them to support Haftar’s Operation ‘Dignity’ against militias in Benghazi since May.

It claimed in August that it had also reactivated some Su-24s, saying they were used to carry out a long-range night attack against Tripoli’s Mitiga Air Base, which has been controlled by an Islamist militia since the 2011 war.

However, the US State Department subsequently confirmed claims that the airstrike was carried out by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt, not the Libyan Air Force.

The Libyan Air Force’s claims to have carried out airstrikes against Mitiga on 24 and 25 November appear more credible. Both Sky News Arabic and Al-Arabiya aired footage of a MiG-21 flying over Tripoli.

This aircraft may not be one of the MiG-21bis fighters that survived the 2011 war. Images emerged in early November showing two previously unseen MiG-21s with Libyan roundels but different camouflage schemes. This prompted speculation that Egypt had provided MiG-21MF fighters to the Libyan Air Force.

The bombing of Mitiga’s runway leaves Tripoli without an airport, given the damage Tripoli International suffered in July.

So, what’s your proposal, Rep. Jerkwad? Throw them out on the street? Throw them in jail?

Oh! Oh! I know! you’re going to institute ‘Business Zones’. These ‘zones’ will have accommodation. They have to move there and to stay there they must work at one of the businesses that set up there. To make things fair the business must feed their workers at least twice a day.

It worked so well in The South before 1860. It should be returned.

‘Scuse me while I go puke.

re: #263 Dark_Falcon

How about auctioning off the right to shoot the condemned dead. It would let rich people have a thrill disposing of one of the “little people” and it would actually transform capital punishment into a profitable endeavor, thus demonstrating John Kaisch’s skill at running the government like a business.

///I am not suggesting this actually be done. The abuses to which it would be prone are obvious and glaring.

Abusive? The only thing abusive about it is that it isn’t already the law and, therefore, rich people are being deprived of their Second Amendment rights and being deterred from the pursuit of happiness.

I’m just surprised that Ohio hasn’t made their families pay for the executions of their relatives.

267 Dark_Falcon  Nov 30, 2014 1:01:29pm

The 2012 presidential election was God’s Gift to firearms production, it seems. The ATF reports that more than 4 million handguns were manufactured in the US, as well as over 3 million rifles and just over 949,000 shotguns.

Thoughts?

That would be unfair, sir, since the ammo available to the rich is too expensive for the poor to afford. Though I suppose we could argue the ejected brass shell casings are a form of trickle down.

For so many reasons, I’m glad that the players did that today.

Very slightly related: I was looking at the Amazon lightning deals today and couldn’t help but leave a comment for one of the items. Shouldn’t be too hard to guess which one is mine.

Well fuck, now I have to delete that item from “recently viewed” so Amazon doesn’t offer more shit like that.

Is there anything in the law other than the subject-to-interpretation Northwest Ordinance of 1787 that prohibits indenture? The Constitution actually counted them for the purposes of apportioning Representatives.

Gun sales boom on Black Friday with almost three background checks per second

The busiest shopping day of the year also saw a major boom for gun sales, with the federal background check system setting a record of more than 175,000 background checks Friday, according to the FBI.

The staggering number of checks — an average of almost three per second, nearly three times the daily average — falls on the shoulders of 600 FBI and contract call center employees who will endure 17-hour workdays in an attempt to complete the background reviews in three business days, as required by law, FBI spokesman Stephen Fischer said.

“Traditionally, Black Friday is one of our busiest days for transaction volume,” Fischer said.

Indeed, Friday saw the highest number of background checks ever for a Black Friday, and second in history. The highest day on record was December 21, 2012, with more than 177,000 background checks.

December 21, 2012 was the Friday after the Sandy Hook massacre when fear of an imminent gun ban had reached fever pitch among the usual suspects.

My thought would be to wonder how many lives those guns will cost. And I do not mean for protection or hunting. Just plain old common everyday American gun problem types of deaths. That would be things like bad handling, kids getting into them with bad results, domestic fights, owner mistaking someone as a bad guy, owner going spree shooter, etc.

It would be interesting to see the total economic cost of the items you mentioned. The costs of healthcare, law enforcement, courts, and lost productivity are likely in the millions if not billions. Moral arguments haven’t worked, maybe economic ones will.

Actually, he’s not: Jay Nixon entered politics during the Clinton presidency and has always maintained a strong ‘Law and Order: persona. He needs that because statewide Dems in Missouri have to strike a balance between their black constituents and their white constituents, and the latter can (and likely now are) very nervous about crime and disorder related to black people.

Judge for yourselves how much of that white Missouri concern is genuine and how much is a pretext.

That I am painfully too aware of.

But since Dark was asking for thoughts, you know, I thought I’d ask. I think he isn’t going to touch on it. I wonder what Dark thinks of that bit about the CDC gun stats, the Surgeon General nomination, etc.? But I suppose that is something he won’t get into as it will not be a popular topic.
