Nominee for Next Defense Secretary: Physicist Ashton Carter

Cue right wing freak-out
Politics • Views: 29,394
Ashton Carter

It hasn’t been officially announced yet, but numerous sources report that President Obama’s nominee for the next Secretary of Defense will be Ashton Carter, a physicist with many years of experience in national security and defense.

“Great, very highly qualified,” said Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz), who will replace Levin as chairman next month, called Carter a “noncontroversial” choice. Both senators said they had yet to receive formal notification from the White House of Carter’s selection.

Carter, 60, is little known outside Washington but is renowned for his intellect. A Rhodes scholar, he earned a doctorate in theoretical physics from Oxford University and holds degrees in physics and medieval history from Yale. A longtime faculty member at Harvard, he began lecturing at Stanford this fall.

John McCain may think Carter’s a “noncontroversial” pick, but just watch: the right wing universe is already starting a massive freak-out because he was not a fan of Reagan’s “star wars” boondoggle.

Fixed. Obama could pick Zombie Reagan with John Bolton’s mustache grafted on and the right wing would be complaining that the nomination didn’t take the popularity of “Duck Hunt” into account.

About the only good thing about SDI that can be said is that the concept scared the shit out of the Soviets. At least until people actually tried to make it work and realized quickly how comically daft the whole idea was.

I’m sure Ted Cruz will be complaining about Carter not having any military experience even though he troll suggested Lieberman.

The one who actually suggested Lieberman was McCain, who I imagine was looking to make up for having stiffed him for the VP pick in ‘08 in favor of Princess Dumbass of the North Woods. Cruz, of course, will simply complain. That’s really all he’s good for, much like all Rand is good for is trying to convince people he’s the exact opposite of daddy.

23 lawhawk  Dec 2, 2014 10:55:06am

SDI was a tremendous cost and drag on defense spending. It actually undermined spending on 600 ship Navy and other programs that were much more relevant to national security (equipment we were likely to use, rather than nuclear weapons or defense systems that were likley never to use because MAD). The R&D on SDI has eventually led to some programs that we take for granted though - Patriot, Aegis, and even the laser point defense system now being fielded by the Navy. 30 years ago, we simply didn’t have the computing power to make those systems operate (always 5-10 years away, not unlike how close we are to getting fusion power).

Now, we do have the ability to make missile defense systems functional - point defense and terminal phase, but not space-based, and certainly not in the launch phase.

But Reagan understood that the fantasy of Star Wars and the spending it would spur would have disastrous effects on a then Soviet economy that was teetering. Still, it wasn’t SDI that toppled the Soviet system, it was a combination of Chernobyl, glastnost, perestroika, and Gorbachev realizing that indiscriminate spending on nukes was a no-win for both the Soviets and the US.

Yes, but you’re talking about people who still think referring to the president as Jimmy Carter 2.0 has sticking power. But yeah I think this is a sign that Ashton Carter is a good candidate for the position. I am glad that the president and his advisers didn’t choose another politician for the job. I liked Hagel but I felt another type of approach was needed for the job.

re: #23 lawhawk

Yeah, the USSR was already in dire straights going into the 1980s, fools errands like SDI and a 600 ship navy (which led to such lovely incidents as the Iowa turret explosion) just ended up contributing to the downfall. Of course, in retrospect, it wasn’t that capitalism “won” so much as communism hit bottom first. The “peace dividend” ended up doing a lot to keep us from smashing into the ground shortly after Moscow did.

By the way, I should add that it really bugs me that McCain is going to be in charge of the Defense committee starting next month. I totally expect even more grandstanding and publicity stunts from him especially with him being up for re-election in a couple years and the high profile of the job.

32 lawhawk  Dec 2, 2014 11:00:52am

I’d be curious what his position was on the spending battles and budget drawdowns that he had to oversee, as well as his position on the controversial F22 and F35 programs. Is he willing to kill, or significant pare back either of the programs (and it appears that they are increasingly going to be hanger queens) in favor of cheaper alternatives, to say nothing of expanding UAV programs?

What is his position on the Navy’s needs? The USS Gerald Ford will soon join the fleet, and other carriers will soon be nearing the end of their service life and need replacement. Will the cost savings for personnel alone make the Ford class worth it?

And what about the needs to provide proper funding for personnel - not just while in service, but after they leave (along with the necessary medical and mental health care, particularly for those who have deployed to conflict zones).

It’s worth realizing that the Alaska land based defense system is prototypes deployed. A true tested production model had not yet even been produced. Imagine if the first couple F-22’s or F-35’s were directly put into service. Of even the first couple F-15 Eagles.

But when you put the Navy version on land, it actually works as advertised.

You can beat a tank with a hidden hole in the ground. Or beat a knight in armor with a big wooden club. These are not recent or Star Wars specific flaws. It’s just entropy-Easier to destroy than build. I look at it like this-Our stealth planes might be vulnerable to L band radars. F-15, F-16, B-52’s are vulnerable to all the radars.

The best article I saw advocated a more blended force-Some expensive stealth and a follow on force more numerous and inexpensive. Like maybe use stealth and active jammers & stuxnet-like viruses from stealthed cruise missiles to disrupt anti air command and control.

Watkins had been alerting other drivers to the checkpoint — which courts have upheld as constitutional but the libertarian activist describes as revenue-generating scheme — and shouting “You criminals!” at officers as they stopped drivers.

He later thanked officers for checking on his well-being after the crash, although he was ticketed for driving without a valid license.

“I don’t ask for permission to drive a car I paid for on a road I paid for,” Watkins said.

I’m liking this Terry Crews fellow

Some, he said, will grab him “by the meat of the arm” and defend sexist behavior by saying, “It’s Man Code, dude. Man Code!”

“Does ‘Man Code’ work when it’s your daughter who gets raped?” Crews responded. “‘Man Code’ — does that work when your mom gets abused?”

Crews also compared men who do not speak up to defend women who are victimized to people who neglected to act against abuses during the Civil Rights era.

“The people who were silent at the lunch counters, when it was the Black lunch counter and the white one or the schools were segregated, and they had two books in the Black school and the white school had everything and you were quiet, you were accepting it,” he told Abdelmahmoud. “Same thing with men right now. If you don’t say anything, you are, by your silence, it’s acceptance. I’m not going to be silent.”

Remember the Ebola nightmare that was lurking behind every door, on every subway, and every bowling alley?

Well, the watch period has ended for nearly everyone who came into contact with the doctor who self-reported the symptoms and was treated and released symptom free several weeks back.

No new cases. No one who had treated the doctor has gotten it. And like that, the Ebola hot spot is out.

There are no current cases in the US. And it will be another few weeks before the US can declare itself Ebola-free.

That doesn’t mean that other cases might come in from West Africa (via Europe) but the public health experts who the right wing claimed to have screwed up so badly were right - and were able to contain the incidence. In fact, other than the failure at infection control in Dallas, there have been no cases of transmitted Ebola in the US.

I haven’t delved deeply into it, but from what I have read I would expect at least a manslaughter indictment. Use of chokeholds have been banned by department policy for over 20 years, video evidence showing the event, etc.

And Gorby played Reagan like a fiddle during the whole mess, especially in getting the IRBM treaty because they were really scared of the first strike capabilities of the Pershings.
