Don’t buy shit when you are on WiFi. You are pretty much defenseless. Any time time you use a debit card, do it behind a stout firewall and use PayPal.

Not directly related to cyber security, but fraud on a credit card is much less of a threat than fraud on a debit card. The debit card is a direct line into your bank account, and fraudulent transactions will have to be reversed by the bank before you’ll have access to the funds.

With a credit card, you have the option (usually taken) of reporting the bogus charges and not paying them.

I make a special point of getting a dumb ATM card (no debit card capability).

You might try a secured credit card that’s tied to your savings account. Works like a regular CC, but you’ve already got the money on it.

Have you gotten a new debit card all 3 times, or are you using the same number?

Were you using a work computer; private computer; or phone when the card was snagged?

Is the wifi network you’re on using WPA security? If it’s WEP, stop using it. WEP was seriously borked almost immediately after it was finalized.

WPA and WEP are security encryption methods. WPA is way more secure than WEP. Not sure if this is the case, but for the longest time WEP was the default security setting out of the box on a lot of routers.

I’m wondering if the RV park’s network has gotten compromised and the management doesn’t realize it. Have any of your neighbors had problems?

I’m far from a security expert, but I’m a fairly advanced computer user. The routers I’ve gotten from Verizon have all defaulted to WEP, and you have to go rooting through the prefs to find the more secure settings. I’d be willing to bet he’s using the router with the out-of-the-box settings.

It might be worth calling in the Geek Squad or someone more familiar with security. This is still a major problem with home networking, in that the average person is unrealistically expected to be a security expert.

The boyfriend just pointed this out to me: having the Joker as a member of the Suicide Squad makes less than zero sense. Having Joker as the target of the Suicide Squad, OTOH, would work. It would give Harley a reason to be in the film. All the way through, she’s trying to redeem herself, etc., but in the end her love for Mistah J wins out and she betrays the Squad.

That could be interesting. But DC Comics have a long way to go to convince me that’s the plan.

The best I can suggest is that management needs to go to wifi company and give them the “You had one job” speech.

If you’re on Windows, it might be worth it to back up, wipe the HD down and reinstall. I don’t say that lightly, as I’ve done it for others and it’s a tremendous pain in the ass.

It would help eliminate the possibility you got compromised on your end, especially if you’re the only one having these problems. And I would almost guarantee the wifi company will fall back on that excuse if that were the case.

What a mess. Yeah, if Jeb runs it might split the vote.

UNH Research: On Environment, Republicans Closer to Independents Than Tea Party
DURHAM, N.H. - Environmentalists dispirited by the Republicans’ dominance of the recent midterm elections can take heart: non-Tea Party Republicans’ views on science and environmental issues are closer to those of Independents than to Tea Party supporters. That’s the primary finding of new research by University of New Hampshire sociologists, published this week in the journal Environmental Politics.

“Across a range of science and environmental issues, non-Tea Party Republicans are more similar to Independents than they are to Tea Party supporters, and those divisions are surprisingly stable over the last four years,” says UNH professor of sociology Lawrence Hamilton, first author of the paper, titled “A four-party view of US environmental concern.”

While researchers - Hamilton a leader among them - have examined the interplay between education, political party and environmental concerns in recent years, this is the first study to separate out Tea Party supporters as a fourth party. Hamilton was surprised to find more significant divisions between Tea Party supporters and Republicans, and fewer divisions between non-Tea Party Republicans and Independents, on a range of questions about science and the environment.

The study also finds that Tea Party supporters with higher levels of education are less likely to trust scientists or accept scientific consensus on topics like evolution or climate change, which runs opposite to the positive effect education has on trust in science among Independents and Democrats.

Lidane’s theory about the Joker being a target is a great idea. I just don’t think the DC folks have it in them to do something like that. Like FF Leader said, some bigwig in a 3 piece Armani suit probably shouted “Who the hell know these characters??? Put the Joker in there! The kids like the Joker! Someone get me Heath Ledger’s agent on the phone!!!!”

That was what was so gutsy about Marvel making the Guardians of the Galaxy. I’ve been reading comics most of my life, and had only the faintest recognition of who they where. Shit, I had to go to Wikipedia to find out the first team made it’s debut in 1969.

But to their credit, they spent some dough and made a really fun adventure movie that didn’t require Comic Book Guy knowledge* to enjoy it. I can’t see the people handling the DC characters doing that, particularly given the way Zak Snyder handled the Man of Steel.

*I will unashamedly crow/gloat about my spotting one of Jack Kirby’s Eternal characters, though. Best. Easter Egg catch. Ever.

I was about to say this, Joker can be in the movie and be a guy worse than the Suicide Squad who they have to take down.

That said, still probably not the best idea because Heath Ledger’s performance was quite memorable, I can only hope this portrayal gets back closer to Crown. Prince of Crime and less terrorist in face paint…

Once again I can only weep that Mark Hamil has turned in his Clown Shoes…

Finding chord center of the ski was the most nerve wracking part.I found it by balancing the ski on my index finger until it was level, and remarkably the measurement was spot on on both skis, 908.5 mm.

Once that was established, I taped up the skis and marked the holes according to the paper jig that came with my bindings. From there I used an old G3 tele jig I found buried on top of our hood vent at the shop and drilled holes along the six lines I drew.

I checked those six lines over and over again for probably a half hour. Plates slipped in like a glove. This is a process I’ve only done three times now. Today was especially UGH because I drilled into some Wagner Custom Skis that I fortuitously acquired for a low price. (for the ski geeks, wood core, ceramic vertical sidewalls, 133-88-16 dimensions in a 184 cm length, mounted with the Bishop 2.0 telemark binding)

re: #59 Mattand

I think that the real difference between DC and Marvel with their respective movies (with exception of the franchise the latter sold away) is DC seems almost wedded to the box they keep themselves in. Before Nolan, it was Burton who’d not only revived the Batman franchise, but had gotten a lot of praise for moving away from the campiness of West-era. So what did the studio do after Returns didn’t do better than its predecessor? Sack Burton and replace him with Schumacher, who refused to that campiness and ultimately killed the franchise. Now Nolan has revived the franchise again by avoiding all of Schumacher’s mistakes…and it looks like DC is going to again make the mistake of thinking people want huge match-ups of heroes and villains, though this time it’s to ape Marvel’s success.

Contrast that with Marvel, which took a huge gamble with Iron Man, took note of what worked and what didn’t, and emphasized what worked in the sequel and other Marvel films instead of thinking they knew what fans wanted. And then they took a gamble again on Guardians, figuring if it bombed then it wouldn’t hurt the franchise they’d built up already, and in doing so allowed the director freedom to make a fun film that everybody could enjoy without needing to have seen every other Marvel film to date.

Or, to make a shorter point, DC is moaning that it can’t make a Wonder Woman film because there’s “no interest” in her getting a solo film. Meanwhile, Marvel’s not only giving Captain Marvel her own solo film, they’re also giving Black Panther his own film, and he’s even more obscure outside the comics than she is.

That presumes a level of creativity on the part of DC that just doesn’t seem to be in evidence anymore.

That’s why I’m not convinced that DC knows what the hell they’re doing, at least in their live action films. Some of their animated films are pretty good, and Assault on Arkham was a decent film, but DC’s live action track record is dodgy.

DC knows what it is doing video game wise at least. There is nothing Marvel has made comparable to the awesomeness of Batman Arkahm : Insert Title Here.

(asylum and city were both awesome and playing through Origins right now and liking that also, I think they’ve finally figured out how to make the detective work more interesting, though the voice work is a few notches lower due to a lack of Conroy and Hamil)

Actually Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2 were pretty good, but they’re just Gauntlet Games with Marvel Characters more or less where you get some friends together and wail away at the bad guys together as opposed to something genre busting /engrossing as the Arkham ones…

This doesn’t look good to me. There really should be a moratorium on anyone playing the Joker for a while.

I’m really not into the comic book movie these days. I much prefer the TV comic book adaptations, I’m a sucker for the serial/soapy elements inherent in comic books anyway. That plays out so much better on TV.

I think what I’m wanting to know is HOW someone accesses the info floating on the wifi waves. I mean, is it a neighbor within 50 feet or… I dunno.

It is hard to say without knowing exactly how things are set up. If you are all sharing one password to get on the wireless network though my suspicion is it is just one big happy network. So unless you know and trust all of your neighbors and anbody they may have shared that password with, I would make damn sure you have a firewall on your local machine and set up a personal vpn for your traffic through someone like proxpn.com.

77 Targetpractice  Dec 2, 2014 8:12:52pm

Putting the Joker into a Suicide Squad film makes about as much sense as Marvel mandating that Guardians of the Galaxy had to have Iron Man as a character. There’s no point to his appearance, he’ll end up overshadowing the lesser known characters because everybody will show up simply to see him, and it will actually endanger the franchise you’re building if the film bombs.

re: #66 allegro

There’s a number of different things that could be happening. Think about every step in the process and what could go wrong (kinda nerve wracking I know).

1)Physical card - Does anyone else have access to it? Does anyone have access to your mail? If so that’s a problem.

2)Your device(s). Do you only use one device (computer/laptop/phone etc)? Do you ever leave a written copy of your debit card info on your device? Do you ever save your debit card info on the device? If so that’s a problem. You could also have a piece of malware on your computer that is recording keystrokes/web traffic. That’s a problem.

3)Wifi -I’m assuming you’re using windows. Right click on the signal strength icon on the task-bar, click ‘Open network and sharing center’. Click where it says “connection” on the right side of the screen. Click on ‘wireless properties’ click on the security tab. If the encryption method is not WPA2 stop using your debit card on that network.

4)The routers - it’s possible to compromise the routers used for the wireless network. This in theory would allow someone to see all of the network traffic, possibly including your debit card info (depending on the places you shop). Talk to the park management about who setups and configures the routers. If the manager does it or their kid, that’s a bad sign.

5)places that you use the card. Are there any places (ATMs, registers, websites and such) that you regularly use the card? Or that you used your card prior to every card compromise. Check our statements to look for patterns. If you do notice consistent patterns of usage before the card gets compromised, try paying at those places with another method. One of them might be compromised.

6) your credit union. It’s possible that the institution itself has been compromised. Ask them about fraud levels. Are you atypical for their customers?

re: #50 Lidane

The boyfriend just pointed this out to me: having the Joker as a member of the Suicide Squad makes less than zero sense. Having Joker as the target of the Suicide Squad, OTOH, would work. It would give Harley a reason to be in the film. All the way through, she’s trying to redeem herself, etc., but in the end her love for Mistah J wins out and she betrays the Squad.

That could be interesting. But DC Comics have a long way to go to convince me that’s the plan.

Joker probably isn’t going to be a member. One of the themes of the modern Suicide Squad is his and Harley’s relationship. He’ll probably be thrown in as a monkey wrench to the main plot line.

It’s still a terrible idea. Between Mark Hammill and Heath Ledger any actor trying to take on the role of Joker right now will have to fill some mighty large clown shoes.

I would add to (2) — Make sure you are not sharing anything on your HD with others on the network. Some Windows versions shut off sharing by default, but you should check anyway. Sharing allows an outsider on the same network to access a file or files on your hard drive, usually music or movies, but a hacker could use that as an entry to other parts of the HD.

Thing is, I’ve been using my debit card for years, online and off, with never a problem until about 3 months ago. I’m not a big shopper and do business with mostly the same companies like my regular grocery store, etc. Live alone, mostly pay cash at restaurants and such. Most of my online shopping is with Amazon and I have an Amazon card, use PayPal for most other stuff. There is no one online place I’ve used my now 3 different debit card numbers. (I’ve looked at my bank records to see if I could find a link.)

Whoever is doing it is an idiot, too. Ordering stuff online? Gotta use a receiving address. Today trying to send money via Western Union? Whose the receiver? Seems to me that a simple investigation would turn up something pretty quick but I don’t know if they even try.

I don’t think DC can take much credit for the success of Arkham Asylum and City, Rocksteady came up with a winning formula for movement and combat in Asylum and just scaled up the size and complexity in City. It’s not a system that can or will translate well to other DC properties. They haven’t created a sustainable business model like Marvel has with its own studio and self controlled cinematic universe.

Well, maybe it’s always been the model of RW media, come to think of it.

216 lawhawk  Dec 3, 2014 6:31:29am

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The job of a journalist is to report about stories that aren’t about themselves. Yet all First Look has been able to do is produce stories about themselves - the departures, the rank crankiness and craziness of the hires, fires, and internal backstabbings that have meant that the organization has produced more stories about its own HR moves than about anything else. Vanity Fair does a deep dive on the organization, and it isn’t pretty (but we already knew that).

It really isn’t any different with CCJ. His idea of journalism isn’t about reporting news - it’s about inserting himself into the reporting. He’s constantly pushing claims that he’s breaking the news, even though he’s piggybacking on the work of others, using questionable or bogus sources, and no fact checking whatsoever.

This is the state of journalism today, and it sucks. And it’s only getting worse as traditional media outlets are cutting still more staff because profits are hard to come by and they’re outsourcing their reporting to the point that in-house expertise is simply not there.

It’s pathetic that some of the best reporting about Ferguson isn’t coming from the STL Post Dispatch, but rather the WaPo and Guardian. Some of that is due to the way that crime reporting is done (the cozy relations between cops and reporters to get local scoops gets upended when the cops are the ones who are doing the crimes, but that’s no excuse for not doing more heavy lifting on what matters in the incident - sussing out whether the police and prosecutors are doing the job they’re supposed to. We need a healthy and I wouldn’t call it activist journalism, but we need active, principled, ethical and aggressive journalists to ask hard questions and get at information that is otherwise hard to come by.

And that’s clearly lacking.

It’s important to remember that profits are not hard to come by. Most journalism outlets are still profitable. They just aren’t as profitable as they were 20 years ago. Profit margins aren’t in the 40 percent arena any more. So they do layoffs to keep the shareholders happy, rather than produce good journalism.

I couldn’t agree with you more. As a life-long news junky, current events maven it’s absolutely tragic what has happened to our media.

I hardly watch any TV news anymore as it is just nothing but warm cereal turned 3-day cold glop.

And with no decent media it will be increasingly easy for politicians, police, military and other ‘power’ structures to control the messages. Add in peoples lack of education and say good bye to greatness.

The other sad thing, I fear it is world-wide. So, I guess that means instead of 3rd World countries, it will all just be a 3rd world world.

re: #220 nearly-headless smith25

Yup, it’s quite possible that the grand jury is going to come back with an outcome today. What that outcome is? I’m really not sure, but I think it might be for an involuntary manslaughter or something related to excessive force (not following proper procedures since chokeholds are specifically prohibited). It looks like there’s further intent to cause physical harm from the video (not listening to Garner when he says he can’t breathe).

The ME finding that it was a homicide indicates that the death was not a natural death, and doesn’t necessarily follow that murder 2 charges will be brought.

It’s more likely that the GJ will find Officer Pantaleo (the only one facing charges in the GJ) will face lesser charges which include, 2d degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, or reckless endangerment.

Several other cops involved gave evidence in exchange for immunity.

At a minimum, I think reckless endangerment is likely, with lower odds for homicide or manslaughter. I don’t think 2d degree murder is likely.

Reasonable minds may differ whether there’s enough for a criminal act beyond a reasonable doubt (the standard when at a criminal trial), but there’s sufficient evidence to warrant an indictment (which is the stage that we’re at).

White guys with heavy weapons targeting law enforcement (Bundy ranch), nothing happens. No arrests, let alone a stop.

Black guy walking on sidewalk with hands in pocket? Accosted by police for having hands in his pockets on a cold day.

Unarmed black guy walking in street - shot to death.

Whites walking through stores with rifles slung - no police called.
Black playing with toy gun in Walmart? Shot to death.
Unarmed black teen playing with toy gun outside - shot to death within moments of police arriving.

Racial profiling is real, and it has real consequences.

Gohmert!!!!

Louie Gohmert: “I’m kind to foreigners. You haven’t seen it, but at 2 in the morning I’ve given food to little children.”

Staggering home from a CCC initiation at 2AM with a paper sack of chittlins doesn’t count.

Legislator to introduce right-to-work legislation

A Republican lawmaker promised Tuesday to introduce a right-to-work bill, prompting warnings from a Democratic leader that the state could see a round of protests reminiscent of the massive demonstrations against Gov. Scott Walker’s law stripping public workers of their union rights.

Rep. Chris Kapenga of Delafield, one of the most conservative members of the Assembly GOP caucus, said he’s convinced right-to-work legislation is right for the state. He said he believes giving people the choice of whether to join a union will boost incomes and the state’s economy.

“It’s the right direction to go,” Kapenga said in a telephone interview. “I’m convinced this is a very important piece of continuing growth in the state.”

Shit, Scotty hasn’t even retaken the oath of office and already his buddies in the legislature are preparing to move forward with dismantling the state’s history of strong union support.

A number of factors, key amongst them the fact that virtually nobody showed up to vote and that the state Dem party absolutely sucks at picking candidates to run against him.

Okay, seriously, if this dipshit was such a screw-up, how did he graduate from the academy in the first place? I kinda thought that was part of the job of such places, to weed out those who can’t cut it or are unsuited for police work. Have police academies become diploma mills?

Whenever I see “Barbwire,” I think of a cheesy movie starring Pamela Anderson.

LOL, that movie was a gender flipped remake of Casablanca. I love that someone actually even made the attempt.

Many. In my small town I personally know of 3 that couldn’t cut it in larger towns/cities and ended up here. And one that is on the local college force that is a total dickhead that got released from another local municipality for his actions. Kinda like the RC church and child molesters.

Just like Darren Wilson - the fuckups always get picked up by another force that is big enough for them to blend in and be ignored. Guy probably shouldn’t have a weapon.

But, but, in their article just two days ago Cleveland dot com pointed out that

Neighbors describe Tim Loehmann as quiet and respectful. He grew up attending Catholic schools, eventually enrolling in Benedictine High School on Cleveland’s East Side.

and

He also played trumpet in the school’s marching band and was in the school’s German Club, Fred Loehmann said…

and

The younger Loehmann began his policing career in Independence in 2012, but he soon grew tired of the slow pace of suburban policing, his father said.

Hmmm—perhaps cleveland dot idiots should have done a bit of research about the reasons young Loehmann “was resigned” from his former employment before printing a fanboi interview with dear old dad.
