Since I’m off work today I’m doing the Christmas decorating. Can someone please tell me why I NEVER have any luck with the lights? Every year I’m either missing strands or they don’t work.

This year i’ve got a case of both as one strand I have is only half on. I’ve gone over it twice and found no burned out bulbs. Another strand seems to be MIA as I’m one short of what I thought I had.

Chuck most certainly does not speak fluent French. I’ve read his attempts at the language on Twitter, it’s a hodgepodge of syntax and usage errors with no understanding of idiom. Basically, Google translate masquerading as fluency.

In the latest chapter of “That Explains A Lot”… had a visit from the park manager this morning. As I related yesterday, I had a creepy encounter with another resident in the laundry room that resulted in the guy screaming expletives at me as I left with my laundry. He was so loud and violently angry that it drew the manager out of the office next door. All of this was because, after his specific query, I told him that I was a liberal and I thought the Keystone pipeline was a bad idea.

It seems that over the past several years he has grown increasingly angry, paranoid, hostile, and belligerent, prompting numerous complaints from his neighbors. Turns out that since his retirement, he sits in his rig 24/7 watching… guess… Fox news.

The manager asked if I wanted to file a complaint.

We might as well just go ahead and declare that cops can do no wrong. Even with video evidence, people are inclined to believe that a cop was doing the right thing. Wouldn’t surprise me if more than one of the morons who voted not to indict though that Garner deserved whatever he got for tangling with a cop.

He was big and black and selling cigarettes for a few cents of profit each. I can’t imagine even trying to sell individual cigarettes in front of a store. That world is so far removed from the world I live in I can’t even imagine what it’s like. How much is he making per cigarette? 25 cents at most? Figure $5 a pack, if he sells them for .50 each he makes enough to buy two packs to sell…that’s third world commerce - like children on the streets in Manila selling flowers in traffic.

I told the manager to go ahead and for that very reason. That he went so berserk over nothing really had me shaken for a while and concerned that he knew where I lived. If he’s escalating like this, someone could get hurt.

In addition to not understanding how there was no indictment, I’m amazed at the level of poverty we see in this country without batting an eye.

Officer got less then 1 year in jail for killing a handcuffed, prone black man.

Rodney King…

It took federal charges to get convictions on only 2 of the 4 originally charged by the state.

The system is NOT broken. It is doing what it was designed to do 150 years ago: Protect some people at the expense of others.

He should have told the cops he was a libertarian who didn’t believe on principle that cigarettes should be taxed and that the city (or state) therefore had no right to interfere with commerce between free citizens in that way.

It’s hard to say that Staten Islanders didn’t go all Staten Island with the failure to indict, but they went all Staten Island. They are far more conservative and law-and-order-ish than the rest of the City, but the fact that they ignored the video showing clear misconduct shows problems with trying police officers.

It’s an impossibly high bar, and that even clear video showing misconduct is no guarantee that an indictment can be filed against police.

It’s also no wonder so many in the minority community have no reason to trust the justice system when they see rank injustice applied at every turn - especially when it comes to members of their own community slain at the hands of the police with no criminal charges filed.

If anything, police violence had spread to include white middle class America.

They can feel it’s appropriate all they want, but if they actually start a race war, they play right into the hands of the white nationalists that are currently oppressing them, and will just get themselves killed, and reinforce the beliefs of racists.

I wish I had an answer, but I don’t see any - especially at the federal level. We might see some individual states move on this, but if you can’t get indictments in NYC (yeah, Staten Island is the most right wing of the boroughs, but it’s still state and city law that applies), you’re going to have a hard time elsewhere. Reforming the law surrounding excessive force and police misconduct needs to be done - perhaps starting with changing the presumption that force is justified. It should be a rebuttable presumption - meaning that the officer has to prove it is justified, pushing the matter to trial, and at least giving families hope that there can be indictments.

It’s a small but significant step.

I know that the law and order types will have issues with changing that presumption and that their word will be questioned or that it somehow undermines their authority, but they are officers of the law and should ultimately be answerable to the community they serve. They are doing a disservice to everyone by engaging in unlawful killings that go unpunished because the system is set up so that even indictment is nearly impossible to come by.

100% agreement. When I first heard I knew two words explained it all: Staten Island. Very blue collar and many police officers live there.

Thought experiment:
I wonder if there’s multiple factors involved with this lack of indictments. Part of it being a sense (misguided or not) that if the public indicts the police that protect them, they won’t do so in the future. Add to this the fact that police departments are very protective of their own, and whistleblower cops are detested forevermore within their brotherhood.

So insiders can’t criticize without being shunned, and outsiders (e.g., juries) are afraid to lose the good aspects of police protection. I don’t see a viable solution to these factors.

I would guess the cigarettes were probably purchased in a state where they are significantly cheaper than in New York.

According to the Awl, a pack of smokes in New York costs $12.85. A pack in Virginia costs $5.25.

According to the state of Virginia:

• In Richmond, Virginia, a carton of premium cigarettes costs a consumer approximately $40 - $45.
• In New York City, a carton of premium cigarettes costs a consumer approximately $120 - $150.
• The profit on one diverted carload of 750
contraband cartons can approach $43,000 due
to these price differentials.

Garner obviously wouldn’t have been getting that kind of profit, because he may have paid a markup above the Virginia price, but it shows that the profit margin is probably better than you might think.
