Ferguson Protesters Met With Hecklers, Confederate Flag in Rural Missouri

The heart of Missouri

Demonstrators marching from Ferguson to Missouri’s capital to protest the police shooting death of Michael Brown were met with opposition as they passed through a rural town.

Television station KRCG reports that some people in Rosebud shouted obscenities and held signs telling them to “go home” and someone put an empty bottle of beer, a melon and some fried chicken in the path of the protestors.

The Columbia Missourian reports that at least one person displayed a Confederate flag, and the back window of a bus traveling with the marchers was broken by a bullet.

someone put an empty bottle of beer, a melon and some fried chicken in the path of the protestors.

But there was nothing racial about it.

9 lawhawk  Dec 4, 2014 9:51:27am

The underlying article actually indicates that someone shot the window out of a bus accompanying the marchers.

Somebody shot the window out of the back of one of the buses traveling with the march, dubbed by the NAACP as the Journey for Justice. The outer pane of glass broke. The bullet landed in the windowsill, the driver said.

The people opposed to the march weren’t just protesting with words or with flags.

They make their intentions and hostilities known with violence.

“This is his black Woodstock, but the civil right’s movement has a long past,” said Johnson. “The problem is that his reporting isn’t serious reporting. It’s stenography for the people in Ferguson who want their story told in the way they want it told. Wes Lowery is a 24-year-old kid who was advanced rather quickly. I feel badly for the guy. There are going to be consequences. Unfortunately groups like the NABJ have decided to award him with journalistic awards well ahead of the time that you would have actually earned them. Wes Lowery is basically running around trying to be the spokesperson at the same time that he’s covering it. I have to call bullshit on that. He had Thanksgiving dinner with the pastor he covered. He’s basically becoming such a part of the story that he can’t now write a critical piece bout Michael Brown. [His work is] also basically propaganda for the cause.”

Concern trolling from the counter protesters - worried that their towns would be burned or vandalized. Which, of course, means that they should shoot and vandalize the property of the protesters, yell obscenities and racially charged statements.

Yeah, I saw that before. I also like how he calls Lowrey a 24 year-old “kid”. Because Chuck is so much more experienced at the ripe old age of 26. It’s just so obvious Chuck can’t stand the thought of a black man being a successful journalist, something he can only pretend to be.

Jon Stewart made a great point about Fox and the “War on Christmas.” They’re HQed in New York, you know Ground Zero for the “War on Christmas” and yet Rockefeller Center is always amazingly decorated for Christmas. People who get their panties bunched up over “Happy Holidays” are the worst. Hell, I find it frankly polite because it’s respecting the person. Heh.

Here in the Czech Republic, nativity scenes are commonplace in town squares this time of year - despite the fact that the bulk of the population is either atheist or agnostic - and I see them everywhere. Which reminds me…..

…..many years ago, we were looking at some of these nativity scenes in Cesky Krumlov and my ex-wife’s niece Andrea was with us. One of them was a ‘living nativity scene’, with real sheep and goats. The goats were chewing on the blankets used to wrap the doll that represented the infant Jesus, and with my sense of humor, I couldn’t resist saying to her, “Muj Boze, kozy jsem jedl Jezísek; vypadá nepredstavoval v tomto roce!” which means, “My God, the goats have eaten the baby Jesus….looks like no presents this year!” Here in the Czech Republic, it’s the infant Jesus who brings the presents on Christmas, not St. Nicholas.

My ex-wife gave me the dirtiest look while also trying not to laugh. She later said, “Of all the things you could say in Czech, you just had to say that.”

Fox News is busy complaining about what they think is the so called war on Christmas, which now begins some time around Labor Day.

Meanwhile, they whitesplain away the real issues facing the nation - like the real and deadly consequences of racism in the country.

The counter protesters are the core audience sought by Fox. They don’t think they’re doing anything wrong. And Fox talking heads (all 50 shades of Blonde) will feed them an endless stream of nonsense about how the poor and illegal aliens are taking billions and leaving them with scraps, even as the Fox talking heads ignore that the billionaires running companies like Walmart and the millionaires heading up many other companies are getting richer and richer with bonus and stock option after bonus and stock option while they pay their workers the absolute minimum wage. Even if Walmart increased their base pay to $20 an hour, none of the Walton family would be hurting. They’d all still multi-billionaires and the company would likely be doing even better since their workers would have more disposable income to spend in their stores (instead of relying on govt assistance to close the gap between the minimum wage and the living wage needed to cover costs.

re: #72 walkingdeadhead

Since when do whites get accosted on a daily basis for walking in the street (jaywalking) or walking on the sidewalk with their hands in their pockets during a cold day or playing in a park with a toy gun (Tamir Rice), or handling an air gun in a Walmart in an open carry state (John Crawford), or cosplaying on a street in Utah with a toy sword.

In each of those cases, the person was aggressively attacked by a cop and killed. In each of the cases, the person the cops aggressively “policed” was black.

Whites can go into Walmart with heavy weapons slung on their shoulders and no one calls the police (even though many a serial killer/mass killer has been white and armed with the same exact kind of weapon). Blacks playing with air guns or toy guns and someone rushes to call 911 and the police arrive and shoot first and don’t even ask questions later. They murdered Tamir Rice - a 12 year old playing in a park with a toy gun - less than 5 seconds after driving right up to him in the park. They gunned him down without even contemplating any conceivable alternatives - like talking to the kid or seeing if there was actually any wrongdoing underway.

You can’t tell me that there isn’t a pattern to the kinds of officer involved shootings and excessive police incidents. You can’t tell me that racism doesn’t play any role in these deaths. Police across the nation have no problem using excessive and deadly force - they also have no problem using it disproportionately when blacks are the victims of that force.

But if you can’t see the problem, then the problem isn’t us pointing out the racism. It’s you.

There is no national database for police shootings.

The problem, experts say, is that the United States doesn’t collect accurate statistics and verify nearly enough information to show definitive trends in police shootings.

“There isn’t a mandatory reporting. It is a self-reporting. Almost on the honor system,” Sunny Hostin, a CNN legal analyst, said on CNN’s “The Situation Room” on Tuesday.

How does the CDC get the number? Primarily from causes of death listed in death certificates from coroners, medical examiners and physicians and demographic information provided by funeral directors.

131 lawhawk  Dec 4, 2014 11:09:59am

re: #99 walkingdeadhead

You’re pulling statistics out of your ass considering that no one actually knows how many people are killed by police every year. It’s only extrapolated amount. No actual statistics are kept.

Criminal justice experts note that, while the federal government and national research groups keep scads of data and statistics— on topics ranging from how many people were victims of unprovoked shark attacks (53 in 2013) to the number of hogs and pigs living on farms in the U.S. (upwards of 64,000,000 according to 2010 numbers) — there is no reliable national data on how many people are shot by police officers each year.

The government does, however, keep a database of how many officers are killed in the line of duty. In 2012, the most recent year for which FBI data is available, it was 48 - 44 of them killed with firearms.

But how many people in the United States were shot, or killed, by law enforcement officers during that year? No one knows.

Officials with the Justice Department keep no comprehensive database or record of police shootings, instead allowing the nation’s more than 17,000 law enforcement agencies to self-report officer-involved shootings as part of the FBI’s annual data on “justifiable homicides” by law enforcement.

That number - which only includes self-reported information from about 750 law enforcement agencies - hovers around 400 “justifiable homicides” by police officers each year. The DOJ’s Bureau of Justice Statistics also tracks “arrest-related deaths.” But the department stopped releasing those numbers after 2009, because, like the FBI data, they were widely regarded as unreliable.

“What’s there is crappy data,” said David A. Klinger, a former police officer and criminal justice professor at the University of Missouri who studies police use of force.

Several independent trackers, primarily journalists and academics who study criminal justice, insist the accurate number of people shot and killed by police officers each year is consistently upwards of 1,000 each year.

When people start trying to compile the figures, it is roughly 1,000 per year.

As of September 1, according to Burghart’s estimates, 83 other people had been killed by police officers in the United States since Michael Brown’s death.

And those numbers dwarf the figures of incidents where cops fired their weapons but didn’t kill anyone.

I’m on the sofa, they’re on the floor playing their version of Monopoly (when you’re six, you can pretty much buy and sell whatever you want), my little guy’s focused on the game, but the neighbor kids (kindergarten and second grade) keep looking up warily at the TV every time they’re talking about Garner or Tamir Rice.

Oh, right, I forgot to mention: the neighbor kids are biracial. And in a nation founded on the idea that all men are created equal, they’re going to end up growing up with very different experiences and different ways of looking at the world than my kid will. The driver was taken into custody by police. Freeman said that it was not clear if he hit the protesters after swerving to go around them or if they had jumped in front of his minivan.

A “slow ballad” styling of “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”
AAAAyyyyeeee saaaawwwww Moooommmmmyyyy kiiiiiissssiiiinngg Saaaaaaaaannnnnnta Claaaauuuuuus

I was in the checkout line at the supermarket and I rolled my eyes and said to the cashier “Just shoot me now!”

And the old lady in line behind me was like “You heathen! You must be Muslim!”

Do you shop at the same place I do? Because they played that one and I came very close to being a newspaper headline.

Right and I hear older whites like my mom and grandmother wonder why African Americans don’t trust the police. Well, it’s because of this. My grandmother was bringing up that her people (Eastern Europeans) faced discrimination when they first emigrated here and that certainly was true. The difference is their descendants don’t face discrimination because of their nationality. I’ve never been except in absolute jest been given shit for being Eastern European/Irish/German. African Americans OTOH face automatic suspicion because of their skin color. And you’re right these are daily occurrences. They happen everywhere.

9. “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree”
8. “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas”
7. “Jingle Bell Rock”
6. “Walkin’ In A Winter Wonderland”
5. “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer”
4. “Holly Jolly Christmas”
3. “Chestnuts Roasting”
2. jazz styling of “Jingle Bells”
1. “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” sung “slow ballad” style (this “song”— and I use the term with extreme generosity—needs to die in a fire)

It’s not worse. The Garner case was caught on video. There wasn’t conflicting evidence. We saw the choke hold. We saw what happened. We saw Garner’s last moments alive as a direct result of the policeman’s actions.

There isn’t anything worse than seeing that evidence and knowing that the grand jury refused to indict. Not even reckless endangerment. No charges.

And yet, the Tamir Rice may ultimately be more horrifying given Rice’s age - he was 12 when cops gave him mere seconds to comply before they shot him dead. That too was caught on video - and the video directly contradicts practically everything that the Cleveland Police and the officer claimed to have happened.

That kids are regularly the victims of excessive force by police is horrifying. When it’s caught on video is worse.

That we as a society do nothing to fix the problem with the justice system and the perpetual injustice caused when cops go free for killing people who did nothing wrong, or where the killings were excessive force. That’s horrifying.

240 ObserverArt  Dec 4, 2014 12:14:00pm

Why don’t the police departments just come out and say their policy is: if an African American is seen as being threatening in any way, just fucking shoot him dead. It seems to be the eventual outcome anyway. Why beat around the bush about it, and waste the time setting up Grand Juries you are going to manipulate.

This way everyone is clear that many whites just don’t want African Americans in this country. A policy like this would force African Americans out of the country and then all the white folk will be really happy.

Win Win…right?

/// x a million. Yeah, I am getting really pissed off about all of this. You can’t tell me that many (like the protesters this thread is about) really want that anyway. Grrrrrr.

He didn’t even have seconds to comply.

He had no time at all. From the time the car enters the picture to the time he is bleeding out in the snow is two seconds. He was shot before the car even came to a complete halt.

He never had a chance. Not only could the officers NOT have made three demands to him, it is humanly imossible to process and comply with barked and unexpected orders in fractional second amounts of time.

When I first saw the video to the Rice case, my first thoughts were that it resembled a gangland drive by shooting. You’re absolutely right. They didn’t give him a chance and now we find out that the officer involved was considered unstable and asked to leave his previous department. Agh.

OK: on a slightly more uplifting note, what are people’s preferred Christmas-or-other-cold-weather-holiday musical stylings?

I’ve been on a less-well-known carol kick: A Virgin Most Pure is a good one. Is it OK that it includes the word “Jewry”?

I am a sucker for Christmas music. All of it. Even the stuff most of you hate.

I follow strict rules about when it is acceptable to play it, however, and nothing before Thanksgiving or after the 6th of January. Most of the time when it is other people around it will be more instrumental/classical/choir stuff instead of the modern pop stuff or the Celtic varieties.

Raleigh Ringers is a fantastic handbell choir that has some really nice Christmas stuff out. As someone who has played in a handbell choir, I can confirm these guys are …phenomenal.

This racism and police brutality is a festering boil on the ass of America that got popped, and now everyone who wasn’t previously aware of it (due to having experienced it in some form) is horrified. This crap is every bit as much part of our country as baseball and apple pie, but people who have the luxury of being able to ignore it don’t want to admit to or deal with it.

It’s the same with homophobia, islamophobia, sexism, and all the other rank, bigoted bullshit that goes on where the victims are blamed and painted as liars seeking special privileges. There are some special privileges at stake here alright, but people are fighting tooth & nail to maintain them because they apparently feel that this is a zero sum game.

For a lot of people, having to treat others as human instead of inferiors is a loss of part of their self-image.

I think this is especially true when someone has built up this mythos that what they have, they have earned. Acknowledging all the subtle ways things were easier for them means that they wouldn’t be able to look down on those who haven’t ‘earned’ what they have, which equates to devaluing the work they put in (in their minds).

The nation is now suffering from a media-induced hysterical delusion that white cops are hunting and murdering innocent black men. The constant challenge I hear even from friends is “How can you defend it? It’s on video!” My reply is that it’s because it’s on video, I can defend it. Everyone in the media, including FOX, are repeatedly lying about the facts of the case, the autopsy report, the Grand Jury process, even the nature of criminal law (like the need to show elements of the crime, probable cause, etc.). This includes all of the talking head lawyers, who actually know the law. It is difficult to escape the conclusion that this is deliberate incitement to racial violence. Stupid doesn’t come close to excusing what I’ve been seeing on the news since last night. Hell, Greta Van Susternan and her retired DC Detective shut down a young woman prosecutor who was trying to rationally explain things like probable cause and elements of the crime. Just shouted her down and went to commercial. Again, hard to escape that this is intentional.

Bad uniformed cops that abuse people don’t last long anymore. They get fired pretty quick. Now are there crooked cops. Sure, I am sure that there are crooked cops that take bribes and deal dope . But we are talking about criminals hiding behind a badge.

A racist and abusive uniformed cop will not last a year in this day and age. We are video recorded, GPS tracked and not to mention recorded by everyone . These so called activists should stick to a cause that is more rampant like young black men shooting other young black men.

I have noticed lately (even in this article) the tendency to use the phrase ‘unarmed’ while NOT including the ‘resisting’ phrase. I am of a belief there is an organized process in the media these days to instigate and promote a distrust and overall negative outlook toward law enforcement. I’m not saying there are no bad cops, but when the ‘appearance’ that is widespread throughout the country, it makes me wonder.

I want to make something very clear here. The word “They” “You People”, “those people” I want to be very clear I’m not referring to just the blacks protesting. Look at the crowd there are a very large amount of white, Hispanic and even the Muslims with all their head gear protesting as well.
College liberals, professors, and organized protesters that are jumping on any cause. So when you look at the Protest and the people marching and shouting they are a different breed then the ones causing the violent acts. So lets be careful when we post to realize violence and mistrust for the system comes in all flavors.

The main cause of Garner’s death was him resisting arrest.

Ok, what do my brothers and sisters behind the badge think of this? It looks like Ofcr. Pantaleo was attempting to use a “Shoulder Pin” (PPCT) hold to gain compliance. Note that he has entered the hold by slipping under Garner’s arm / shoulder just as in the PPCT action. To an untrained eye, the PPCT Shoulder Pin would probably look just like a choke hold. Thoughts? I would especially like to hear from some PPCT / SSGT / H2H combatives instructors.

State Senate to quickly take up right-to-work legislation

After years of seeking to change the subject, the top leader in the state Senate made clear Thursday that lawmakers in his house would debate the issue of so-called “right-to-work” legislation within weeks and bring the volatile issue of union law back into the statehouse.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) told conservative talk radio host Charlie Sykes of WTMJ-AM (620) that he was considering so-called “open shop” legislation to prohibit employers from striking deals with private-sector unions to require workers to pay dues. He said he was considering making Wisconsin the first state in the nation to attempt to exempt certain private workers such as the operators of earthmovers who have supported Wisconsin Republicans in recent years.

It was a complete shift from the general election rhetoric of Republicans in recent months who have said that the issue is a distraction and not a priority.

“We can’t tiptoe through this session without addressing this. We’re not tackling this six months from now. We’re not tackling this a year from now…there’s no way we avoid this issue. We have to deal with this issue right now,” Fitzgerald said.

I was fucking speechless when I saw the NYPD spokesmen back during the Amadou Diallo shooting come onto TV and throw a hissy fit over the New Yorker magazine cover that mocked the NYPD and “41 rounds fired”.

He then proceeded to get angry about Springsteen mentioning the shooting during a concert.

No self awarness at all. No concern over the innocent dead guy shot to pieces on his own stoop. You could see that the Cartman “respect mah authoritah!” meme was dead on with these cretins.

Bullshit like this always turns everything on its head. Whining about being held accountable is somehow seen as being ‘brave’ and ‘responsible’. Screaming in pants wetting fear about hordes of ‘thugs’ and ‘terrorists’ and their supreme imminent threat to everyone is somehow the height of sober realism and bravery. And lets not forget the classic and yet somehow still effective dodge of ‘bringing up racism proves that YOU’RE the racist!’.

It’d be laughable if this shit didn’t work regularly enough to be depressing.

Right and honestly this is funny coming from the guy with a condition they say lacks empathy but I think we have too many in our society that lack empathy. I’ve brought up the prejudices I’ve witnessed first hand and I think a lot of it has to do with people who haven’t attempted or lack the desire to put themselves in someone else’s shoes.

Yep, if it hasn’t happened to them then it hasn’t happened to anyone and doesn’t exist, ergo the victims are liars. They’re in denial because acknowledging the problem means they’d have to admit something wrong & unjust has been happening and they’d be morally obliged to fix it.

Adolph Lyons, driving with a burned-out tail light:

The officers greeted him with drawn revolvers as he exited from his car. Lyons was told to face his car and spread his legs. He did so. After an officer slammed his hands against his head, Lyons complained that the keys in his hand were hurting him.
Within 5 to 10 seconds, the officer began to choke Lyons by applying a forearm against his throat. As Lyons struggled for air, the officer handcuffed him, but continued to apply the chokehold until he blacked out. When Lyons regained consciousness, he was lying face down on the ground, choking, gasping for air, and spitting up blood and dirt. He had urinated and defecated. He was issued a traffic citation and released.

Justice Department and City of Cleveland Agree to Reform Division of Police After Finding a Pattern or Practice of Excessive Force

Attorney General Eric Holder announced today that the Justice Department’s civil rights investigation into the use of force by the Cleveland Division of Police has found a pattern or practice of unreasonable and unnecessary use of force. To address these findings the Justice Department and the city of Cleveland have signed a statement of principles committing them to develop a court enforceable consent decree that will include a requirement for an independent monitor who will oversee and ensure necessary reforms.

And doesn’t this just warm the heart:

two of the five deputies — Sheriff’s Capt. Thomas J. Flanders and Detective Michael J. Sollenberger — had been placed on indefinite paid administrative leave starting on Dec. 1.

According to WDTN, Flanders is in charge of the Montgomery County Jail, and Sollenberger works with the internal affairs unit and is a member of the SWAT team. The three other deputies had not been identified by name, and had not been suspended.

Might need scare quotes on “evidence” there given that some of the witnesses presented in the Brown case were obviously presenting false information.

Jenna Bush Hager has something to say:

Former first daughter Jenna Bush Hager warned Malia and Sasha Obama haters to back down.

“I’m fiercely protective of them,” she said Wednesday when asked about the Republican aide who criticized the first daughters for their outfits at last week’s White House Thanksgiving turkey pardoning.

“I don’t think it’s easy … it’s not a job that they wanted … you know they’ve done a great job,” she said about Malia,16, and Sasha,13, during an interview on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live.”

re: #154 ipsos

The image that I still can’t get out of my mind is yesterday afternoon. I’m in the family room, the TV’s on with news of the no-bill in the Garner case, and my first-grader is home from school and playing with the two kids from next door.

Same neighborhood, same socioeconomic background, same politics at home (their mom is the most progressive LDS divorcee I have ever known, and an awesome lady all around), but still different universes.

What American dream?

And always looking over their shoulders, as if there’s bullseyes on their backs.

Dr. King would fucking weep, seeing all of this shit still going on almost 50 years later; as it is, he must be spinning in his grave so fast, you could probably light up most of the eastern seaboard.
