Jon Henry tweeted this video to me a few days ago and after careful consideration I must say I approve. Has a great message, a deep groove, creative production, steampunk props, and the kids are adorbs. Watch it, you’ll like it.

This is Jon Henry’s cosplay-themed music video for “I Still Got Your Back”. The young stars of this video are Morgan and Robert, the niece and nephew of Jon Henry, who is also the director.

Just watched “Van Helsing” for the first time and ended up enjoying it much more than I thought I would. An excellent Hammer Films-style monsterfest with updated CGI graphics and a decently executed storyline. I’ve seen a lot worse movies.

Engineer joke I just stole from facebook…

An engineer was crossing a road one day, when a frog called out to him and said, “If you kiss me, I’ll turn into a beautiful princess.” He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket.
The frog then cried out, “If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I’ll stay with you for one week and do ANYTHING you want.”
Again, the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.
Finally, the frog asked, “What is the matter? I’ve told you I’m a beautiful princess and that I’ll stay with you for one week and do anything you want. Why won’t you kiss me?”
The engineer said, “Look, I’m an engineer. I don’t have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog, now that’s cool.”

41 Islamo-Masonic Vourdalak  Dec 4, 2014 7:12:06pm

LOL

Igor Sechin spent $55 billion in 2013 to buy competitor TNK-BP and create a Russian oil colossus, pumping about 5 percent of the world’s crude.

Almost two years later and investors have written off the deal. Battered by sanctions and oil’s accelerating price crash, OAO Rosneft (ROSN) has lost 38 percent of its market value this year in dollar terms and today the whole company, TNK-BP and all, is worth $50 billion.

And buying TNK-BP has left Sechin, Rosneft’s chief executive officer and a long-time ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, with a lot of debt to repay.

According to that scale, my neighb is off the charts blue, but since I live in Billionaire Central Tribeca, I suspect they’re not counting the Russian and Chinese absentee tenants that have taken over the joint, because they can’t vote, not to mention the American stockbrokers and money managers who don’t know what voting or democracy even mean, just as long as they make a bundle and get laid at their pilates sessions.

Bullshit. It’s using your elected state/federal officials which here doesn’t get down to the township level nearly well enough. I live in one of the more Republican leaning townships (there were multiple Yes on Prop 8 signs in the neighborhood, sigh) and our city council is predominantly Republicans …none of which got my vote for re-election.

Sadly, where I live, even when you drill down to state rep, county council, city council and school board, it’s still almost all Republicans. Even in the non-partisan elections, it’s mostly Republicans—we have one definite Dem on county council and one or two on city council, but that’s about it.

Watching Lawrence re-run. I swear there is cop shopping. They fuck up somewhere, go somewhere else without any background check.

I mentioned that yesterday, the 30 mph freeway fuck it all to hell I was in, there were 4 people I saw pulled over in the rain. I think the CHP took the opportunity of a bunch of cars moving slowly to check tags, run tags, etc. There was no way these people were doing anything wrong. We were all cautious as hell in rain and jam.

The police have dropped 10 slots for me recently, for others I’m sure. And they are freaking out. Power loss does that.

Still looks more like when you sharpen too much to me to be anything other than noise. Now, I’ve seen some good grain like effects from the sony sensors being used by Oly & Fuji but I (personally) do not see it in this one.

Try something at that ISO but in lower light to get a slower shutter - that might give a better feel for grainish noise?

As an aside, I’d print that crop. 8x10 & hang it on the wall as a meditation.

Looks like pixels mimicking grain. Was that from a RAW image or was it high res jpeg?

Having shot B&W Recording film back in the 70s for some concert stuff I was doing for art school, I saw similar grain in those images because they were high ISO 1000 pushed to 3000 in development and shot low available light…no flash. I wanted the grain for the project.

And that is not bad. If they can get that much info to be subtle in transitions instead of a mapping like area, it can only mean better images in digital.

Edit…later all.

RAW relatively un messed with. If I did something similar with my older digital cameras it would be really ugly. It’s not sharpened in post. I could dropbox link the original but it’s about 25 meg.

Very quiet here. The sun is out and it’s sweater weather here. My college leaders dispatched a student to take me to get fitted for a traditional Chinese-style jacket. She had this photo to show me and asked which I liked better.

President George Bush and Chinese president Jiang Zemin

I already have a red one, so I went with the blue and gold.

Sorry Mr Klystron is having a bad day. Get him a stiff drink or do something wifely to distract him.

There are drinks and shoulder rubs happening at interval to do what I can to make it better.

The blue and gold will be interesting! We were talking about when we would like to travel to China; he has been multiple times but I never have, so… it’s on the list, but lower down on the priority scale. Fingers are crossed for Scotland in the new year (he may have to go over the UK on work, and we could extend that).

The tree is up here for the holidays, and I am working on stitching. Rather than the current progress photo, I give you one of the ornaments (from the tree a few years ago - I need to finish up a few more and get them up there as well!).

The beading is a giant pain and makes everything look snazzy.

My office-mate in grad school was a Chinese national and she took her …I guess he was her husband by that point?… home with her one year to meet the family for the first time.

Of course, it was right at the height of the whole bird flu mess, and someone on their plane tested positive, so they ended up in quarantine for a week out of the trip. She had some interesting stories to tell when she got back.

The husband’s last bout of serious food poisoning was spent in Hong Kong, although he suspects it was due to bad meat eaten in Lhasa.

Our first international trip together was Mexico.

It involved salmonella, a doctor, and drugs that aren’t prescribed anymore in the US because of potentially fatal side effects that can wait up to a year to manifest.

I figure China should be relatively straightforward after that. :)

Rumain Brisbon, an unarmed black father of four, was shot to death in Arizona Tuesday when a police officer apparently mistook his bottle of pills for a gun.

About 100 protestors marched to police headquarters in Phoenix Thursday, demanding the department release the name of the officer who shot Brisbon. A spokesperson reportedly defended the shooting, saying, “This one went bad from the standpoint of how it ended, but the officer was doing exactly what we want him to do.”

Well, shit. I hadn’t heard about this one until today:

Cop kills unarmed black man in Arizona

Had a really tense argument at work today whilst trying to inform my fellow Antipodeans about the protests in the US. Basic white privilege at work here. The tone went, as the conversation progressed, that it shouldn’t matter what the race of the victim is. Police brutality is unacceptable and those guilty of it must be held accountable. I agreed with this sentiment whilst maintaining that police brutality is overwhelmingly suffered by minorities and people of colour. I did not detect the pivot in my colleagues’ argument until it turned to the usual apologetics.
‘Well, he should’ve known better than to resist.’
‘As many whites are killed by police.’
‘But he was selling loose cigarettes.’
The smugness was suffocating. I could see their minds doing nimble contortions to make an abhorrent act palatable. Necessary. Where there was once an anxiety that they might have to change their views on race relations or the powers of law enforcement, they now seemed to relax into their old preconceptions.
‘Cops see awful things everyday. Their job is tough.’
So I became the one at fault for ruffling feathers and for even intimating that something was awry with the world.

And now this shit. But we can rest easy because some detail or another can be used to smear yet another dead black man. Cowards.

Christopher Walken and the Pirates OWNED IT.

The girl they had as Peter Pan was meh. She did not look, sound or move like an adolescent boy. Mary Martin was the greatest of them all, and she was 46 years old when she played Peter Pan.

The natives, what a horrific fail. Cringe-worthy. They made an attempt to not be racist by casting a Native American dancer as Tigerlily but it was still racist as fuck. Where were all the native women? Why were there only native men (naked “savages”) UGG.

The “lost boys” all adult males with hairy cantaloupe calves, incredibly creepy.

I haven’t seen anything she’s done, but judging from her WIkipedia entry, she got her start acting in Funny or Die! skits, YouTube videos, and campus theatrical gigs. [That campus being Yale.] The cynic in me says she parlayed that meager experience and her famous father’s subtle influence into a part on a TV series, and this gig on Peter Pan.

The Mrs wanted to watch, and I obliged her, for about 10 minutes. It was a train wreck. A spectacularly glorious train wreck. but a train wreck nonetheless.

From my limited sample:

Best thing about the show - Christopher Walken, who shows he can still dance and chew scenery like no other.

Worst thing about the show - Christopher Walken, who fumbled and mumbled through his lines and ran Captain Hook through a Captain Kirk translator with the phrasing. And syntax.

Everything else? Not particularly memorable.

Though, if I want to see Christopher Walken dance, this is the go to:

LAPD chief is open to investigating Bill Cosby sexual assault allegations

In the weeks since allegations that Bill Cosby sexually assaulted women decades ago began generating national debate, it’s been assumed that the accusations were too old to merit attention from law enforcement..

But on Thursday, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said his detectives would investigate any complaints filed with the LAPD against the comedian, even those exceeding the statute of limitations for criminal prosecution.

So far, Beck said, no complaints against Cosby have been filed with the LAPD…

It’s flowing into Jordan through a nature preserve. The leak is stopped, but the oil is pretty toxic.

Hi all. Well, the wingnuts have kidnapped my husband’s brain. He fell into the “Eric Gardner was in poor health and that’s what killed him. The cops didn’t INTEND to kill him, they broke no laws. That video has a big chunk missing, he was resisting arrest, etc.” So, basically this means the only people I know who aren’t racist douchebags are my son and some of the vets I used to blog with back in the day that I’ve never met in person but have “known” for over a decade. What. The. Fuck? I had to leave the room for awhile last night because otherwise I would have started screaming. He’s apparently getting his news from the Opie and Anthony show on satellite radio (ok the Opie and Jim Norton show, whatever, SSDD with these idiots).

Every single friend my husband has is a moron. I swear to god. This is causing other issues in our relationship. I’m really sad right now. I am seriously contemplating running away from home.

Hi MomA! Good to see you.

Morning LGFers.

Do you think your husband is falling into sort of a ‘boys club’ thinking…being one of the guys so he fits in with co-workers or friends?

It happens. I have a friend that happens to a lot. His mind is like playdoh, whoever he is around can bend and twist it to their thinking…and then when he gets around some of my friends he gets jumped on and then is like “what was I thinking?”

Well, there is your problem. You aren’t thinking!

I think what should be part of Keystone if it is passed: everyone that voted for it in both the house and senate should be charged with paying for any clean-up costs involved, for any land damage that is bad enough people needed to be relocated, restored, etc. And, for extra kicks, they and their staffs will also have to physically go to the site and help with the clean up.

And those that didn’t vote for it, get paid by those that did, to go and have the opportunity to push their faces into the slime.

Too draconian? I admit, sometimes my early Catholic school days with the classic nuns of the early 60s tends to color my want for strict punishment when “you should have known better!”

So what will the right wing fixate on from yesterday’s mostly peaceful protests?

Someone sucker punching a cop in NYC during the protests.

Someone who looks to be white in the video (and is wearing a scarf to mask much of his face), I might add. Would I be shocked that the person was using the protests as cover for a different agenda? Nope.

In total, in NYC 200+ protesters arrested. Nearly all are in the obstruction of justice (for blocking traffic) or resisting arrest (by not clearing out of streets blocking traffic).

When Facebook billionaire Chris Hughes, the owner of The New Republic, and TNR’s newly installed CEO, former Yahoo News executive Guy Vidra, visit the storied magazine’s Washington headquarters on Friday morning to meet with the staff, they are likely to be greeted by a skeleton crew of a few editorial interns and junior employees.

Hughes’s and Vidra’s decision to abruptly change the 100-year-old journal of politics, policy, art and culture into what Hughes calls a “digital media company” and relocate to Manhattan—and in the process get rid of top editor Franklin Foer, who has run the magazine on and off since 2006, and literary editor Leon Wieseltier, a major figure at TNR since the early 1980s—has prompted what is expected to be a mass exodus by most if not all of the senior editors and writers.

re: #219 makeitstop

Retraining is a good step, but it also has to go hand in hand with a reformation of training and tactics at the police academy for new recruits (along with better screening of cops in the first place).

Retraining and improved guidelines need reinforcement, so cops should get regular retraining to explicitly and repeatedly indicate that the cops must take steps to avoid the use of deadly force.

NYC is safer than it has ever been. Murders may not even crack 300 this year. 25 years ago, we were talking 2,000+. The number of crimes overall has dropped as well - from over 500k to about 110k. ~80% drop. Good policing is one part of deciphering that drop, but so too is the end of the crack epidemic, improved use of statistics to address crime, dealing with repeat offenders, use of cameras and DNA to arrest and convict criminals, etc.

But that also means that the gun is not an automatic talisman. Stress that violation of department policy on use of deadly force, chokeholds, etc., will result in loss of job.

Most cops do a solid and upstanding job. They should want the bad apples to get tossed from the Department since it gives all of them a bad name and makes their job much harder. Defending the indefensible actions of the cop in Garner’s death just shows how tone deaf the PBA is and while I get that their job is to protect their union members, the video clearly shows him violating Department policy and that’s simply inexcusable.

They need to compare the budget cost of that to the wrongful death lawsuits. Though, on principle they should be doing whatever is needed in terms of retraining since killing people is not good service to the community.

And the cop photoed giving the finger needs talking to as well. Doesn’t take much bad imagery to counteract a lot of positive actions. Police are humans too, but once you put on the uniform your actions represent *all* to people who wear that uniform and work for that organization.

There needs to be a pretty thorough reappraisal. Improved screening helps since you can try to spot people who will have (and be) problems early on. You also need periodic evaluations to check for the equivalent of stress syndrome, reinforcing positive behavior patterns, and in general figuring out if someone is getting burned out and needs to be fired, transferred, or given therapy *before* something bad happens.

The underlying report found no conclusive evidence; and yes, some key players had not testified.

That’s despite fact that Christie operated a tight ship where he controlled the many aspects of governance - a micromanager. Is it possible that people in his inner circle acted without his direct knowledge or support to force the GWB lane closures as political retribution? Yes.

But it’s not entirely plausible when Christie always claims that the buck stops with him and that he operates a tight ship. It’s tough to reconcile a rogue top official running this project without Christie’s knowledge or approval.

More likely? Christie intimated that something should be done, and left the details up to his underlings giving him plausible deniability. That seems to be the outcome of the investigation so far.

Still, there’s a bigger mess for Christie, and it involves the transfer of Port Authority money to rebuild the Pulaski Skyway. It diverts monies meant for bond offerings for Port Authority projects, and may be a violation of federal law on the underwriting and offering statements that didn’t state that the money from tolls would be diverted for those purposes.

He apparently will skate for the same reason that St. Ron did: He didn’t explicitly order his underlings to break the law, he just screamed “Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest!” and they did the rest. Perhaps that’s the reason those critical witnesses haven’t testified, is they can’t find one who’ll testify in exchange for immunity who can do more than say that they acted on implied orders rather than explicit ones.

Just imagine how well he could be doing if he had a real House of Representatives to work with. Even if they were (realistic) Republicans.

A Eulogy for The New Republic

Frank Foer isn’t leaving TNR because he wasn’t a good enough editor. He’s leaving because Chris Hughes is not a good enough owner.

The problem, rather, is that Hughes and Vidra are afflicted with the belief that they can copy the formula that transformed the Huffington Post and BuzzFeed into economic successes, which is probably wrong, and that this formula can be applied to The New Republic, which is certainly wrong.

Speaking of which, and totally OT, but I bought myself my own little Christmas present. A Seiko SKX007K2 wristwatch, sometimes known as “the poor man’s Rolex Submariner” - though you won’t know it if you see the ungodly amount they want for them here in the Czech Republic.

I ordered it online for about half the price they want here. Seiko watches, especially the automatic ones, command a premium. Hell, even an Apple 3G still sells for about $400 used here.

My dad had a number of Seiko 5’s. He swore by them, and he was pretty rough on watches. They lasted a long time…..after he passed away, I sold them off as I didn’t really need them, and they were all still running, though they were somewhat banged up.

I’ve always liked diver’s watches, and automatic watches. and the Seiko in the photo I put up is considered one of the better diving watches out there, and for it’s price - $200 neighborhood - it’s considered an outstanding value for money. That same watch retails here for close to $500 in watch stores I’ve been to here; usually between 8500 Kč to 10,000 Kč.

Pricey, to say the least.

I never hit on a watch band that truly felt comfortable. Have a heavy Rolex knock-off that I was gifted with somewhere. Metal band was either too loose and would unlatch itself, or too tight and would pinch or rip out arm hairs. Older watches had leather or vinyl bands and roughly the same issues - too loose and would ride up and down my wrist and arm, or too tight and would pinch too much.

Just use my cellphone as the time piece now.

Though he stated his evolution opposition was based on something at the molecular level and not due to being Christian. That he followed that statement immediately by stating belief in Intelligent Design caused a double eyebrow raise.

Yeah, I know the kind.

As I try to live according to what is really important (love of god, neighbor, self, “don’t do to others what you don’t want done to you”, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”, acts of charity, and so on) I get so frustrated by those who get hung up on ways to exclude & deny grace to everyone other than themselves.

Feh. Might just as well simply say “Be excellent to each other” and we’ll have as good a chance of it sticking. And, in the end, I really believe that the Lord would rather have a good Atheist than an asshat Believer…

When you rank worse than ‘Battlefield Earth’ and ‘Lawnmower Man II’ (who even knew that one existed?), you gotta be doing something pretty wrong.

Saving Christmas ranked worse than Santa Claus Conquers The Martians.

Let that sink in for a moment.

Are you kidding? Even the title is 1000x times better. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians conjures up images of humor and adventure and b-movie fun. Saving Christmas is literally the most uninspired, cliche, generic name for a Christmas movie you could possibly come up with.

Is it Zyzzyx Road bad? That movie actually made all of $20. No that’s not a typo or error in the decimal place. It made $30, but they had to refund $10 because one of the people who bought ticked had worked on the movie.

I can’t begin to explain how goofy this site is. You have to go and look for yourself.

Oh, now that looks fun.

I guess this means the Beatles never walked on the moon. Or something.

With the Gawker article on Peter Pan VB put up, the reviews of Cameron’s ‘movie’ at IMDb and this all saved as bookmarks, it looks like I have much comedy to read this weekend.

To be fair, it was meant for direct to video release outside the US. The producers where obligated to do a domestic release by the SAG. They rented a small theater and showed it the bare minimum times they needed to without any advertising. So they weren’t trying to make any money on initial release,

Left right won’t matter - it’s simply never been done before and is automatically evil as a result.

They’re implying “public trial” = “kangaroo court show trial” of course. You know, socialist show trial to convict and execute proper Americans.

And coming from the folk that love doing smears and convictions in the court of public opinion makes this even more offensive.
