Watch: President Obama Learns to Code

As Angry Birds plays in the background

On December 8, 2014, President Obama met with students participating in an “Hour of Code” event at the White House, which is really cool and all that, but somebody in the room is playing Angry Birds and the sound effects are louder than the people’s voices, and I have to admit I cracked up every time the birds won a round.

I started coding back in the late ’80s and quit late ’90s or so*. I just started seriously playing with HTML/CSS/PHP/Jscript. I had forgotten how much fun coding is.

*My last project was written in Access Visual Basic so I’m not sure it really qualifies as coding.

Argghhh! I remember punch cards from that clunky “word processor” we used in the late 70s. Didn’t understand a thing about them, but I could type 100 wpm.

And I once had to use a Wang system. Anyone remember Wang?

Whistleblower: Wisconsin Attorney General JB Van Hollen received illegally manufactured guns.

Department of Justice supervisor acknowledged making, selling guns without a license

A former state Division of Criminal Investigation supervisor acknowledged last year that he made and sold guns without a license, confirming allegations by a whistleblower who has since been fired.

Records released by the state Department of Justice show that former DCI Special Agent in Charge Jay Smith acknowledged in an email to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that he had made and sold guns for others but said, “I have never made a profit on selling any of my firearms.”

…..

Dan Bethards, a 14-year undercover drug agent who brought allegations against Smith to state and federal authorities, was fired in October 2013 for violating several Department of Justice rules. He now works as a narcotics agent for the Lac Courte Oreilles tribal police department.

A tape recording Bethards said he made of his conversation with Nygren during the investigation last year also revealed that two of the weapons Smith made went to Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen.

The most important thing to remember when coding: the computer does exactly what you tell it to.

I guarantee that is the problem 99.999999% of the time.

(That rare out case is when it does what someone else told it to do that you didn’t take into account.)

This is why coding is both hugely satisfying and immensely frustrating, the proportions of which …well… some days I like working on code and some days I don’t.

I had my stack of coded punch cards ready as my Senior Science Seminar class (invitation only and I was the first feminazi ever invited) headed to Wyoming High School (the only high school in Greater Cincinnati to have a “real computer”…it had its own building).

I put my carefully coded and stacked punch cards into the feeder tray and all hell broke loose.

From a manual typewriter (bang, bang, bang!) and learning the querty pattern of typing to a home computer (and a lousy, flat keyboard—thanks, Grandson!) that requires not a lot of brain-work is my frustrating history of the last 60 yrs. Now, it appears that I’ll have to “make do” with a lousy keyboard on a laptop as soon as I can find one that will make me half-happy. : /

Hey all. Just wanted to say hey. Suffering Monday blues when factoring my life and current events together.

I read through the previous two threads. Now I am more bummed than when I started. Also read all the Washington Post coverage of the Ferguson shooting of Mike Brown. I keep coming away with questions. Lots of questions.

How the hell do people buy the prosecutors directing of the evidence to be Brown charged the cop like a bull…bullshit? The ‘fight’ in the car, seemed to be more a tussle with the cop getting pissed and pulling his gun to escalate the whole damn thing than the cop fearing for his life.

And then there is the ongoing Rolling Stone gang rape article. I know some are pissed at Rolling Stone. I admittedly haven’t read one in a long long time, and I don’t use their web site. However, I still give them credit for trying to get the story out. Yeah, they fucked it up, but at the heart of it…is THE story. If we are lucky they will gain back their footing, or maybe it will all lead to others really getting into it and reporting it better.

I blame some of the Rolling Stone problems on the the way journalism is being torn apart and how it is unclear to the world at large what is good what is not and how the internet feeds a lot of the problems, along with FOX type ‘news’. I think everyone is very leery about how and what they publish. You get attacked any way you tell it. No excuse, just saying it is all a muddled mess.

And then there is gadfly Chuck C. Johnson.

Okay…enough. See you all later. I’m hoping tomorrow is a way better day. It has to be. It is only up from here!

re: #27 Amory Blaine

Whistleblower: Wisconsin Attorney General JB Van Hollen bought illegally manufactured guns.

Department of Justice supervisor acknowledged making, selling guns without a license

There’s some legal ambiguity here:

Under federal law, firearms manufacturers must be licensed. A manufacturer is defined as “a person who devotes time, attention, and labor to manufacturing firearms as a regular course of trade or business with the principal objective of livelihood and profit through the sale or distribution of the firearms manufactured.”

An ATF investigation into Smith, handled by the agency’s St. Paul, Minnesota office, did not result in charges against Smith. Messages left with Robert Schmidt, the ATF spokesman, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Carol Kayser, who made the decision not to charge Smith, were not returned.

First of all you don’t need a federal license to “make” a firearm. Making is legally distinct from manufacturing. To make a gun for personal use all you need to do is fill out ATF Form 1, wait for the approved form to come back, and comply with existing length, caliber, and other restrictions. This way it’s legal to go down to the plumbing supply store, buy some pipes, caps and a nail, and make a 12 gauge slam fire shotgun. You have to inscribe your information as a maker, name, address, and come up with a serial number for the gun. It’s totes fucking retarded, but it’s legal.

However you can’t sell a firearm you’ve “made” on a Form 1. They’re supposed to be for personal use only. This is how making and manufacturing are different from one another.

Which brings me to my second point, I don’t think the term “make” is being used correctly in the article. I’m fairly sure the guy was purchasing already manufactured receivers, which legally is the gun part that is the firearm. It’s the part that has the serial number, the part that has legal restrictions. He was then probably kitting it out with select parts. It’s legal to do this, and then sell it afterwards, as long as the person can argue with a straight face that they had the intent to keep the gun for personal use at the time that they bought it. So I’d call this assembling a gun, not making one.

If he was actually “making” guns that required a Form 1, and then selling them it’s really difficult to see how he wasn’t charged, so I’m almost certain he was buying receivers and assembling complete guns that way. It’s still pretty borderline behavior following Abramski v. United States, but as long as the pattern wasn’t too egregious and the guy held onto the receivers for some reasonable span of time before transferring them legally to close friends then it’d be pretty difficult to prosecute him for lying on a federal document, which is how they got Abramski.

Also, as a footnote the reason Abramski was investigated at all is that he was suspected of murder. The only thing they could get him for however was the straw purchase, which was totally unrelated but better than nothing in eyes of the US Attorney’s office.

One of my co-workers (She’s over on the dark side, sales), her little boy is learning programming from the MIT Scratch program. It’s a lot like their “App Inventor” product, you don’t write code, you take blocks, they hook together, and it generates the code.

He’s learning about loops, variables, decision trees, all the programming essentials, but learning just the concepts and seeing how they work making actual apps.

After that, think how easy it would be to actually learn code, once you know what a loop is, why it works, what you use it for. I think this is such an exciting idea.

And yes, I know that there have been tools like this for years, but the focus of this is so perfect.

And in related news, I officially gave my company my 2 week notice. Don’t have a lily pad to land on, but I’ve got more than enough resources to see me for far more than the immediate future, a safety net for after that, and several people who have openly said they would like to see me work for them. (We’ll see where that pans out now that it’s for real :) ) I suspect that they won’t pull me out of this weeks class, but I bet they will find somebody to cover next weeks. They don’t like people with ‘nothing to lose’ teaching. (and that’s part of their problem)

I think I’m going to take a bit of a sabbatical first, let myself unwind. Going to Florida in 2 weeks to spend Christmas with my Dad, and then see what I want to do next. Maybe some coding job, maybe implementation / installation, maybe become a male stripper. Last one probably isn’t the best plan.

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: “Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
‘My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

I suggest we start calling upchuck Ozymandias. He won’t get it but anyone with an education will.

Here’s a really cool jQuery extended function that inserts a string of text into a textarea, for example, this editing box I’m typing in right now. I’m now using this code for our ‘reply’ and ‘quote’ functions, and for inserting image tags when you upload an image or use the Image Library.

The text is inserted at the current ‘caret’ or insertion point, which is wherever you typing last.

$.fn.extend({
	insertAtCaret: function(theText){
		return this.each(function(i) {
			if (document.selection) {
				var sel = document.selection.createRange();
				sel.text = theText;
				this.focus();
			} else if (this.selectionStart || this.selectionStart == '0') {
				var startPos = this.selectionStart,
					endPos = this.selectionEnd,
					scrollTop = this.scrollTop;
				this.value = this.value.substring(0, startPos) + theText + this.value.substring(endPos,this.value.length);
				this.focus();
				this.selectionStart = startPos + theText.length;
				this.selectionEnd = startPos + theText.length;
				this.scrollTop = scrollTop;
			} else {
				this.value += theText;
				this.focus();

This story makes it sound as though he’s trying to cover up something.

bigstory.ap.org

“St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Bob McCulloch made the additional information public Monday evening, without explanation. The new material includes transcripts of eight federal interviews of possible witnesses to Michael Brown’s shooting death in early August.

“Those transcripts and the other new material weren’t among the more than 5,700 pages of documents released by McCulloch on November 24.

“The first batch of documents didn’t include a transcript or a recording of a two-hour FBI and county police interview with Brown’s friend, Dorian Johnson, who was with Brown when he was shot.”

Ok, this is for all the people here who know a little about photography and, especially, about it’s history. I saw this at another website a few moments ago and this is so true it’s painful. And yet this truth is why we’ve seen the biggest uptick in pictures taken since the turn of the 20th century. What you say? This:

Embedded ImageWe have some of the most insanely great cameras ever imagined available to us. Yet what are most pictures taken with? Phones.

A few generations ago when the first photo explosion happen it was with a Brownie. Just as limited and just as ubiquitous.

Our generations will not be remembered for all the careful pictures we photographers make but for the snaps of countless phones in the magic of the instant.

I have that exact Brownie Camera on a bookshelf not six feet from where I’m sitting. It was the first camera I ever took pictures with. I was in grade school then and I’m 60 now. I remember how cool it was when instamatic cameras with film cartridges were introduced. My parents bought each of us kids our own camera and the documentation of family stuff went into overdrive.

I have another brownie-style camera that’s even older. It’s basically a wood box with five holes in it and one switch that you flipped one way to take a picture and then flipped it back to take the next.

194 William Barnett-Lewis  Dec 8, 2014 6:43:38pm

re: #193 stpaulbear

Hey guys, just wanted to give a DVR Reminder…President Obama will be the guest on The Colbert Report tonight.

It’s the beginning of Colbert’s final week of show. The last official show is this Friday, Dec 17th. He’s being replaced by the “Minority Report” hosted by former Daily Show correspodent Larry Wilmore.

I’ve come to prefer Colbert over Stewart the past several years (although Stewart does have some hit or miss good moments, like his Eric Garner coverage), so I’m definitely gonna give Wilmore’s new show a looking.

‘Colbert Report’ will be replaced by ‘Minority Report’ today.com via @todayshow

Anyway, set your DVRs

Besides just being a stupid statement and the DC yet again trolling the hot-button topic of “Israel”, check out the pic he chose to use as an example of “pathetic” major.

I think he took the picture from this:

Of the zillion ways to illustrate “anthropology”, and even the phrase “most pathetic”, I wonder why the author picked that one?

In douchebro news NOT related to UpChuck, Glenn Greenwald’s First Look has launched a new project: reported.ly.

Here’s an introductory post from editor Andy Carvin.

I’m not sure exactly WTF they’re going to be doing:

On behalf of our entire team, I’d like to welcome you to reported.ly, brought to you by First Look Media. We want to bring global news directly to you through social media —𠂪nd hope you’ll become a part of our online community. Come along for the ride. :-)

That’s where reported.ly comes in. We’re an international team of journalists with literally dozens of years’ worth of combined experience as online community organizers, storytellers and curators. We don’t try to send people away from their favorite online communities just to rack up pageviews. We take pride in being active, engaged members of Twitter, Facebook, reddit — no better than anyone else there. We want to tell stories from around the world, serving these online communities as our primary platforms for reporting — not secondary to some website or app. Forget native advertising — we want to produce native journalism for social media communities, in conjunction with members of those communities.

I used to respect Andy Carvin as a journalist adept at social media. My respect for him has been lowered significantly.

I guess we’ll see how this bright idea works out.

Curated twitter. Or a curated blog posting. Value? Slight. Revenue generating? Minimal.

The value is in added value, and I’m not seeing it. Not with FLM’s track record. It sounds like a reach since everything else they’re doing is flailing about.
