The film is short and sweet. The burgeoning CG industry will sweep its creators right up.

OT, but Canadians do it right with their tribute to Jean Beliveau - includes a cappella version of O Canada in French and English:

Man, upchuck hasn’t changed a bit since his college days (and he’s still as crappy a writer as he was back then.)

Comments on his Claremont Conservative blog from 3/10/2011

you can’t take any of those comments seriously. I mean look how often he says “we of the Claremont Courier believe that…” when, in fact, there is no “we.” Any mentions of “my attorney,” “my representatives,” or “my people,” are just demonstrations of CJ playing a game of “big grown-up.” It’s like the kid in the backseat of a car with one of those stick-on toy steering wheels, insisting that he is operating the vehicle.

it’s a shame that you are so happy that wilner allegedly hit this girl… i feel bad for the girl that you are essentially profiting off of publicizing this as much as possible. and thanks to you, almost everyone on campus knows who she is now.
asshole.

From 3/12/2011

BTW, I have no doubt that the school will be ecstatic to have you gone after May. Who threatens legal action against their own school over something so petty? Are you gonna sue every time someone hurts your feelings?

How to win friends and influence people…

Then, on April 1, Big Chuck somehow came up with $15,000 cash to buy out the other school paper, the Forum and then he fired everyone involved with it. The article is written in third person, but it has Chuck’s terrible writing style all over it.

In a press release circulated to various campus publications, Johnson announced the appointment of a new senior staff, none of whom attend any of the Claremont Colleges. An anonymous source familiar with the situation said, “Johnson wanted his own people, to fulfill his own agenda and did not want any dissenting opinions.”

An individual in Johnson’s inner-circle said Johnson was strongly considering shutting down the publication. The individual added that Johnson’s desire to “squash the largest competing publication” was the driving force behind his decision.

Ah yes, the old inner-circle ploy—can one person really form a circle?

Then this graph, which cracked me up with its self-importance:

Johnson, a Senior at CMC, Editor-in-Chief of the Claremont Conservative and entrepreneur, was also unavailable for comment. His secretary said Johnson will hold a press conference on the Bauer Center steps on April 4 announcing a new direction for the publication and his plans for the future.

cmcforum.com

So. to recap—once a self-important asshole, always a self-important asshole.
(and then there’s the poop story…)

Of course he’s grifting for lawyer fees:

Then says:

which makes absolutely no sense (not even counting the “I’m be” part)

And then he is going to expose some conservative for serial adultery, and expose Hillary for something or other, then expose some other politician for rape, then gets locked out of his house and then he’s going to make a video, then he wants to do an ask me anything on Reddit (but doesn’t know how.)

The College Rape Overcorrection

Note: The article the Page is about does not attack ‘Jackie’ in an manner, was written by a center-left woman and it is on Slate, which is a center-left site. This was because I wanted to focus on the issue, not on some right-of-center people’s ugly response to it.

No idea why Chuck is in such denial about something that happened some time ago. Defecating on the floor is at the bottom of a long list of terrible things that he is on record doing and then bragging about.
I’m sure it was an award-winning poop.
Maybe this is what he was referring to when he spoke of ‘building rockets’ from a young age.

I could go on.

48 goddamnedfrank  Dec 10, 2014 3:51:33am

This is another one of those things he shouldn’t be talking about. I mean, I get what he’s trying to do here. But he can’t dodge the many years old allegation that he pooped himself on the 7th Floor of his dorm, a story that is apparently interred as part of the institutional lore of school, by trying to tie it to another less interesting or established rumor of even worse deviant behavior. After all, the kind of guy who would poop himself like that probably would do creepy sex stuff with a non-human animal. Because the thing is, after outing an alleged victim of a sexual assault and blatantly lying about her having “cried rape” in the past, pretty much all bets are off at this point as to where he actually does draw the line.

Always Remember and Never Forget:

Update, Feb. 11: Some readers wrote to us saying we should have made clear the difference between the federal deficit and the federal debt. A deficit occurs when the government takes in less money than it spends in a given year. The debt is the total amount the government owes at any given time. So the debt goes up in any given year by the amount of the deficit, or it decreases by the amount of any surplus. The debt the government owes to the public decreased for a while under Clinton, but the debt was by no means erased.

Other readers have noted a USA Today story stating that, under an alternative type of accounting, the final four years of the Clinton administration taken together would have shown a deficit. This is based on an annual document called the “Financial Report of the U.S. Government,” which reports what the governments books would look like if kept on an accrual basis like those of most corporations, rather than the cash basis that the government has always used. The principal difference is that under accrual accounting the government would book immediately the costs of promises made to pay future benefits to government workers and Social Security and Medicare beneficiaries. But even under accrual accounting, the annual reports showed surpluses of $69.2 billion in fiscal 1998, $76.9 billion in fiscal 1999, and $46 billion for fiscal year 2000. So even if the government had been using that form of accounting the deficit would have been erased for those three years.

Don’t be such a knee jerk cheerleader.

On the issue of torture, the US is clearly the lowest of the low, in terms of the countries it makes sense to compare us with. Namely, the West and the rest of the developed world. Among those nations, we’re the only one to employ a coordinated torture program in recent history. It sucks to hear that, but it is what it is—the truth. Ignoring it does no one any good now.

It’s weird looking back on the Bush years in terms of foreign policy. Americans were so poorly regarded- I will admit that anti-Americanism was indeed a mainstream thing.
Aside from the massive civil rights issues (not exclusively an American problem, I’ll add) it’s impossible to properly quantify the shift in attitudes since the election of Obama.
Seriously, as bad as the report on the CIA was yesterday, comparing 2006 America and today’s America, for us ferreners, night and day.

Do you still support the Bush era torture program, or do you agree that it was a shameful, inexcusable, and almost certainly criminal betrayal of our nation’s principles and heritage?

So what? The point is that we should hold ourselves to a higher standard. And that we should concern ourselves with things we can change—US policy—instead of deflecting by pointing out things we can’t change—the barbarism in much of the rest of the world.

So what? The point is that we should hold ourselves to a higher standard. And that we should concern ourselves with things we can change—US policy—instead of deflecting by pointing out things we can’t change—the barbarism in much of the rest of the world.

We’re supposed to hold ourselves to a higher standard, not excuse our behavior when it fails to meet that standard by saying we’re closer to it than nations which we have no control over.

Missouri executed its 10th person of a year. A record. And to get to that dubious record, the person they executed was mentally disabled.

Efforts to spare Goodwin’s life centered on his low IQ and claims that executing him would violate a U.S. Supreme Court ruling prohibiting the death penalty for the mentally disabled. Attorney Jennifer Herndon said Goodwin had an IQ of 73, and some tests suggested it was even lower.

The state courts had ruled he had enough mental acuity to know right from wrong and that he knew what the outcome of his actions would be. All of his appeals were denied, including to the Supreme Court.

Gov. Jay Nixon refused to grant clemency as well.

Lessons can be learned from yesterday’s events at the Chabad world hq in Brooklyn. The cops didn’t have tasers, so they had no less-lethal means of handling the man, who turned out to be mentally ill (bipolar). So, given those considerations, the cops did what they had to in order to stop the person from carrying out more potentially lethal criminal acts.

The lesson that wont be learned is that we need to spend a lot more on mental health care, including and especially for veterans who suffer from PTSD from their time in service.

The lesson that wont be learned is that despite having the ability to obtain and procure less lethal means of disabling persons who pose a danger to themselves and others, law enforcement wont spend on those items, or the training to avoid lethal uses of force.

They wont. It’s all part of Twitter’s business model. They need people to say outrageous crap that gets lots of people riled up, because that generates more tweets. Eyeballs is the ultimate indicator of success for the company since revenue is tied to all the traffic.

For all that, the reason not to abandon twitter altogether is that it would cede the entire space to the trolls and evil/sociopathic people like Chuckles who use the medium to spread their fecal matter all over the net.

The Geography Of Happiness: Where Americans Are Happiest And Why

What’s behind the variation? Goetz says suburban counties tend to be happier than urban or rural ones, and that non-white counties tend to be happier than whiter ones. People were also happier when they commuted less, moved homes less often, and lived in places deemed to have more closely-knit communities (higher levels of “social capital”).

Agreed. The difference between the Bush Administration and ISIS’s atrocities is primarily one of shame. ISIS just has the unmitigated gall to be proud of what they do, whereas the Bush administration made some nominal efforts to bury their shit. The ISIS and other kakistocratic regimes tend to be more cartoonishly evil and outright barbaric, but one could argue that’s a distinction without any meaningful difference.

At the end of it all Bush’s administration caused far more harm to this country than the jihadists could ever dream of.

I already have a 24mm f/2.8. Was going to get the 1.4 but couldn’t justify the cost. The largest aperture doesn’t make much sense when you have that much built in depth of field.

Also have a 50mm f/1.4 and an 85mm f/1.8. I’m all about the primes.

You’d probably get a whole lot more use out of a 17-50 f/2.8 than a 135 f/2 unless you already have one in that range.

And if you’re looking for maximum utility, Tamron’s got a 150-600 that I’ve been jonesing for since it was announced. With the 1.6 crop factor, that’s like having a 240 to 960. Sure, it isn’t the fastest glass out there, but what else can you get with that kind of range for that price point.

At this point, I’ve got a Sigma 8-16, 4.5-6, Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS, and a Tamron 28-300 3.5-5.6 VS. I also have a mirror lens, but that’s got limited utility given how slow the lens is. Having the faster 17-50 makes shooting all the low light shots so much easier - and great for kids in action.

It is just stunning the contrast between the parties on the release of the torture report. On one side, you’ve got Democrats who are saying the American people have a right to know the truth about what went on. On the other, you’ve Republicans who are actually arguing that this dark chapter in our history should have remained buried, that the report’s release is “political,” and that Democrats are endangering Americans.

Over a decade later and Republicans still want to justify the most noxious shit with “It’s for your safety!”

Early work day due to contractors coming in to replace a pump valve in the mechanical room. (Relief valve off the water pipe that feeds the pumps that feed cooling water to the A/C units that cool our server room. It was showing corrosion and we opted to replace sooner rather than later.)

Also got my first eggnog latte’ of the season.

Feline Overlords were a bit rambunctious last night. Three boxes (one in each room) have been declared “cat bunkers” and there is a running faux war with one FO claiming a bunker and then defending it from assault by the other FO. Then they switch roles and which bunker to use. Eventually ends in a short “cat rally” where they do a few laps of the apartment. Plus side is that they settled down pretty quickly after “lights out”.

Mitochondrial DNA Proves Women Were Instrumental Viking Colonizers

What they found was that ancient Norse and Icelandic DNA is very similar to the maternal DNA found in modern North Atlantic people, like Swedes, Scots, and the English. In particular, ancient Norse DNA is closely related to that of people from the Scottish Orkney and Shetland Islands near Scandinavia. This data suggests that Norse women were important agents in the Vikings’ overseas expansion and settlement.

The role of corporations at war has increased over the decades. Yeah, the anti-lawyer schtick is a pretty basic element in the RWNJ canon. Although they make plenty of use for lawyers themselves, they didn’t like the Civil Rights movement’s use of the law and the courts to fight injustice and don’t like the idea of the little people being able to sue corporations for damages, etc.

Why the Government prefers to use contractors rather than lab rats for their experiments:
1. Contractors are cheaper than lab rats.
2. You don’t form emotional attachments to contractors.
3. There are some things that lab rats absolutely will not do.

(former government contractor IT worker)

Contractors and lab rats can be disposed of after use without further expense. The military is learning the hard way that the new lifesaving medical technology is getting expensive in terms of providing lifetime care: it was cheaper just to offer the family a lump-sum life insurance payment and be shut of them.

So, the other night, there were seminary students who were out protesting the failure to indict anyone over the death of #EricGarner. The students agreed that they would engage in nonviolent demonstrations and civil disobedience. They locked arms.

And then the darndest thing happened.

The black student was arrested. The white student was told to get out of there and while another cop eventually cuffed him, he was let go.

Two of those were Shawn Torres, 23, and Benjamin Perry, 24, both graduate students at Union Theological Seminary in Manhattan. They took part in rolling demonstrations Friday night, as a cold, soaking rain swept across the city. At the end of the evening, they briefly blockaded the Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive near Delancey Street and both were arrested, as they expected to be.

But Mr. Perry, a white man, and Mr. Torres, a black man, say what happened to them showed disparate treatment in subtle and stark ways. The president of the seminary has written to Mayor Bill de Blasio to suggest that the experiences of the students were “an object lesson” for retraining officers; the Police Department said it would have to review the details of the matter.

Standing on the road with arms linked just after 11 p.m., they heard a police sergeant’s final warning but had already decided they would disobey.

“We were peacefully offering ourselves up,” Mr. Perry said.

“Two officers grabbed me,” Mr. Torres said, and cuffed him with the plastic ties. “In the process, one of them ended up pushing Ben away. This is when the difference comes in.”

“I put my hands behind my head, waiting,” Mr. Perry said. “Another officer grabbed me and threw me face first on the ground. He put his head next to my ears and whispered, ‘Just get out of here.’ “

Mr. Torres, meanwhile, had been deposited in the back of a police van. “I was the first one,” he said.

Mr. Perry climbed to his feet. “I was bewildered, but I wasn’t going to leave Shawn,” he said. “I just stood there and waited. In 15 to 20 seconds, another officer saw me looking around. He cuffed me, but he didn’t want to process me. He took me around to other cops, saying, ‘Do you want to take this guy? I don’t want to be out that late.’ He was shopping me around.” Eventually he found an officer to escort Mr. Perry.

Racism is alive and well.

Brave students. Anyhow racism is more alive than ever if you ask me. Hell we still get stories about law enforcement officers being Klan members. It’s 20 frigging 14 and yet many police departments still resemble police departments of the pre-Civil Rights era where the police could brutalize black citizens at will without fear of prosecution. I don’t know what to blame it on but the fact of the matter is there’s a large element of the country that never got over the Civil Rights Movement’s successes. Peace man, no war ever ever. But yeah. The right has always had a great distortion of what it means to be an American liberal but that shouldn’t shock anyone since they get their perceptions from what it means to be an American liberal from people like Ann Coulter, Limbaugh, and Hannity who blame liberals and liberalism for all the country’s failing all the while they claim conservatism is the greatest thing since sliced bread and that conservatism can only be failed.

Venezuelan economy is taking a massive beating from the oil price drop as well. Major weakness of a mono-product economy. I can imagine Idaho collapsing if McDonald’s suddenly stopped selling french fries.

Gas prices here in Northern NJ? The Delta gas station I go to says that he’s figuring prices will be $2 by end of this year. Prices keep dropping, and that’s money in everyone’s pockets except the oil companies and the oil-producing countries like Russia and Venezuela that rely heavily on oil revenues to stay afloat.

Florida Professor Resigns After Offensive Facebook Comments

Deborah O’Connor, an 18-year faculty member of the FSU College of Business, said on Tuesday she was stepping down after several comments she made on Facebook were published by Folio Weekly, a Jacksonville alternative newspaper that contacted FSU about them on Dec. 5.

In a discussion on the social media website, O’Connor referred to “Northern fagoot (sic) elitism” and made disparaging remarks about Muslims.

“Obama has single-handedly turned our once great society into a Ghetto Culture, rivaling that of Europe. France is almost at war because of his filthy rodent Muslims who are attacking Native Frenchmen and women,” O’Connor wrote in one response to a stranger on the Facebook thread, which has since been deleted.

She seems nice.

In 2007, when the Charles Koch Foundation considered giving millions of dollars to Florida State University’s economics department, the offer came with strings attached.

First, the curriculum it funded must align with the libertarian, deregulatory economic philosophy of Charles Koch, the billionaire industrialist and Republican political bankroller.

Second, the Charles Koch Foundation would at least partially control which faculty members Florida State University hired.

It’s worth mentioning again that Bruce Jessen, one of the two psychologists whose company was paid $80 million to come up with torture techniques, is a Mormon. In fact, Jessen was called as a bishop (lay leader of a Mormon congregation, with a lot of power and authority over the members under him) of a Spokane, WA, congregation in October 2012:

spokesman.com

A week later, he’d resigned:

religiondispatches.org

There’s a lot I could say here but I’ll just note one thing: It’s perfectly OK to rake in the bucks for torture. And it won’t stop you from becoming a bishop. But for God’s sake but don’t suggest that Mormon women might want the priesthood, otherwise you’ll get excommunicated (as happened to Kate Kelly).

In 2005, the two formed their own company specifically to continue their contract work with the CIA — for which they were paid $81 million. After that, “the CIA outsourced virtually all aspects of the program.”

The psychologists lacked “specialized knowledge of al Qaeda, a background in counterterrorism or any relevant cultural or linguistic experience.”

Texas, home of that “Christian” guy who went to Israel to blow up stuff…

Would that be this guy?

AdvanceIndiana - Brother-In-Law Of Tony George Indicted By Israeli Officials For Plotting The Bombing Of Muslim Holy Sites

From the blog:

In a bizarre terrorist plot striking close to home, the 30-year old, younger half-brother of Laura George, wife of former Indianapolis Motor Speedway CEO Tony George, has been indicted by Israeli officials for plotting to blow up Muslim holy sites in Israel. Adam Livvix, formerly of Marshall, Illinois, reportedly took up residence in Palestinian-controlled cities on the West Bank after entering Israel on a tourist visa in March, 2013 according to the Jerusalem Post while on the run from U.S. authorities on drug-related charges. Livvix, who previously held no strong religious views during any time in his life growing up and living in the United States, allegedly began expressing negative views towards the Arab population living in Israel and his desire to cause harm to Islamic holy sites in Israel through the use of explosives.

SNIP

It’s also claimed that Livvix had earlier turned down an offer to help assassinate President Barack Obama during a visit to Israel last year. “Livvix, who was allegedly offered sniper rifles to carry out the assassination, refused the offer, according to police,” the Post reported. That’s when he allegedly left the West Bank and entered Israel, whereupon he began passing himself off as a Navy SEAL. The Post says Livvix has confessed to committing a number of fraud-related crimes, as well as making initial terrorist preparations for an attack on Muslim holy sites. Israeli officials claim the investigation is being carried out jointly with the FBI.

SNIP

Dude sounds like a total wacko.

I found this blog through a Indycar race forum. I used to be a big Indycar race fan until the “split” wars came about in the mid-90s and started to tear the sport up. The man responsible for the split and the downfall of the sport is one Tony George.

He screwed up the sport so bad his own family kicked him out of the job he was raised to take over when he came of age.

Yeah, I am still a pissed off fan. I no longer watch the races and have moved on. But this is a fun story as it pertains to Tony George’s wife’s brother.

Or... you can just click this button to open the Pages posting window right away.
