Chuck C. Johnson Lies Again, Calls Rolling Stone Writer “Plagiarist” Based On… Nothing

Another grotesquely false article
Wingnuts • Views: 35,049

Oh brother. Do I really have to write another piece about this noxious sociopath?

Yes, it’s Chuck C. Johnson again, dear friends, still attacking Rolling Stone writer Sabrina Erdely like a rabid ankle-biting chihuahua, in another blatantly dishonest and distorted (not to mention horribly written) blog post titled:

MUST SEE VIDEO: #SabrinaRubinErdely Award-Winning College #RollingStone Story Was Fake, Plagiarized - GotNews

It opens with:

Embattled Rolling Stone journalist Sabrina Rubin Erdely’s first ever story for Rolling Stone had serious factually [sic] problems according to her.

There’s a video that goes with this piece of garbage, and once again, there’s nothing in it that backs up Chuck’s wild accusations of fakery and plagiarism. Nothing. Nada. This post is nothing but a sham, start to finish. Obviously, Chuck is a guy with sheer contempt for the intelligence of his target audience.

Things that are wrong, distorted, or dishonest:

  • Erdely talks about a story of hers that won Rolling Stone's College Journalism Competition. It was not a "story for Rolling Stone," it was an entry in a contest.
  • The story was not "faked" at all. Erdely says her story was wrong in many details, and she readily admitted it. She said it was mistaken, not "faked." That's Chuck's word, and it's a distortion.
  • The plagiarism accusation is libelous, and there's absolutely nothing in the video that supports it; Erdely talks about doing research for her article, not "plagiarism." Chuck completely made this up.

For a guy who’s threatening to sue everybody on the Internet who even looks at him cross-eyed, Chuck certainly feels no hesitation about engaging in grossly false defamation himself.

I’m guessing the plagiarism accusation comes from this bit:

“I went to the library and pulled up tons of clips on her, borrowed whatever I could find. I just borrowed whatever facts I could find. It turns out that those facts which were in mainstream publications and magazines were not actually factual. Which completely shocked me. I just assumed those were real and legit but they were not at all.”

Apparently CCJ doesn’t understand the difference between doing research and plagiarism.

While UpChuck is genuinely a vermin, Erdely’s track record causes me to question Rolling Stone’s credibility. She’s certainly not on Stephen Glass/Jason Blair level, but it’s still a fuckup on their part.

Also following up on the work Christmas Party thing from downstairs. I generally try to avoid drinking any alcohol with people I work with. Unless we are good buddies outside of work and hang around regularly.

I’ll make the required appearance, have a non-alcoholic drink, get the “hey, how’s it going?” talk out of the way and get out of there ASAP.

Also, why are the most lively and vocal people at the party usually the ones I like the LEAST?

Oh brother. Do I really have to write another piece about this noxious sociopath?

Sociopath or psychopath? I’m leaning towards the latter.

Sociopaths are likely to be uneducated and live on the fringes of society, unable to hold down a steady job or stay in one place for very long. It is difficult but not impossible for sociopaths to form attachments with others. Many sociopaths are able to form an attachment to a particular individual or group, although they have no regard for society in general or its rules. In the eyes of others, sociopaths will appear to be very disturbed.

Psychopaths are very manipulative and can easily gain people’s trust. They learn to mimic emotions, despite their inability to actually feel them, and will appear normal to unsuspecting people. Psychopaths are often well educated and hold steady jobs. Some are so good at manipulation and mimicry that they have families and other long-term relationships without those around them ever suspecting their true nature.

The problem with right wing trolls is the fact that, you can’t deal with them like your garden variety trolls. You can’t just ignore them away and deprive them of oxygen, since they’re already fed and sustained by the outward crazy of the right wing nuts already out there. Right wing nuttery is a self-feeding existence and hoping that you can ignore them away just allows them to craft their own little universe that the media ends up picking up on and thinking ‘oh they, this mass of people is thinking this one thing, maybe they’re on to something!’ That combined with the instant credibility the media gives right wing anything and the instant suspicion they treat anything left wing with, and you’re already fighting behind if you choose to ignore the crazies.

I just got home, flipped on the tube and caught a bit of MSNBC and the one guest (Jimmy Something?) was saying there is a coming together of some Tea Party types and some Dems that are going to band together and kill this bill. It’s like a back door move on Boehner and he is not going to have the votes. And in some ways, they are also taking on the White House. Elizabeth Warren getting some big credit for helping lead the charge.

Good political theater. A mess for the country.

I bravely read the first five pages of the plagiarized version. I don’t think a brilliant editor could have helped much. A weak central thesis of “Coolidge is under-appreciated” combined with a rambling style and a view of history through an ideological lens give us a mess of disorganized thought and constant references to the greatness of Reagan. Reagan honored Coolidge by writing about him in the 1970s! Good lord….

And then we have this from Reuters:

The Obama administration made a last-ditch attempt on Thursday to drum up Democratic support to salvage a faltering $1.1 trillion spending bill, just hours ahead of a midnight U.S. government shutdown deadline.

Administration officials from President Barack Obama down to staff at the Department of Education were phoning Democrats in the House of Representatives to ask them to set aside objections to a financial provision and pass the measure to fund most of the government through September.

“We believe that this compromise proposal merits bipartisan support on Capitol Hill, and hopefully will arrive on the president’s desk in the next few days. And if it does, he will sign it,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters.

WTF? That “financial provision” would enable the TBTF banks to gamble with FDIC-insured funds. These are the same banks that were fuck-stupid enough to invest in pig in a poke bundles of questionable mortgages so by all means set aside your objections so that the next bailout is automatic.

I’m thinking perhaps he thinks a bill next spring would be worse, with an R majority in both houses? This would be effective through 9/15, but why would he sell out on Boehners Bank Bailout and the campaign contributions if they can’t be tossesd out (among others)?

Chuckles publisher: encounterbooks.com

A “non-profit”.

Founding Publisher:

“The founding editor and currently a consultant to Encounter Books is Peter Collier. He has worked as an author and editor for the last thirty years. During that time, he has written novels, short stories and screenplays, along with best selling biographies. Referred to in the New York Times as “America’s premier biographer of dynastic tragedy,” Collier is best known for The Rockefellers: An American Dynasty; The Kennedys: An American Dream; The Fords: An American Epic; and Destructive Generation (all with David Horowitz). He is also the author of The Fondas: A Hollywood Dynasty and The Roosevelts: An American Saga. Recent books include Medal of Honor: Portraits of Valor Beyond the Call of Duty, with photographs by Nick Del Calzo, and The Anti-Chomsky Reader, co-edited with David Horowitz.”

No real problems here. Where I live there isn’t much of a flood or slide threat. However, more rain in 24 hours than we’ve had in some 18-24 month stretches in the drought takes a bit of getting used to.

There’s politics, and then there’s burning everything down. The GOP is intent on burning everything down. They’ll settle for forcing the Democrats to accept a crap sandwich that they’ve added with all their heinous riders.

The President isn’t likely to veto the CRomnibus because he recognizes how important it is to keep the government funded and funding through next year (and that it’ll be even harder to get a budget acceptable to Democrats next year when they’re in the minority in the Senate as well).

So, when you realize that there’s limited options and you want to keep government functioning, you’re left with trying to work around the GOP as best as you can because you’ve lost Congress starting next year.

And that further pushes the GOP to try and get even more crap inserted, knowing that they might try even more crap next year.

On many economic issues, that’s pretty much true. The back and forth over gutting one of the few useful provisions in Dodd-Frank shouldn’t distract from the unpleasant fact that Dodd-Frank was pretty feeble as originally written.

I’ve never read a coherent explanation of why TBTF banks haven’t been trust-busted down to size and why Glass-Stegall was not reinstated, other than the obvious realpolitik point that the banks own both parties.

“…One editor at a conservative publication that has published Johnson would only speak about him anonymously, partly for fear of antagonizing a writer who had already caused him much grief, he said. Like some of his peers, this editor lamented Johnson’s toxic influence on conservative media. “How sick is this system that a person who does everything in the exact wrong way could get this [Washington] Post story written about him?” the editor asked, referring to a recent article that some industry figures, including one of the Post reporters whom Johnson targeted, criticized as too soft.

“It’s more than he’s just bad,” the editor said. “There’s a sense of cosmic injustice that someone like him could exist and make money off this.”politico.com

Some people have little choice but to engage Johnson. Another man named Charles Johnson, who writes the political blog Little Green Footballs, is sometimes confused for his more inflammatory counterpart. “It’s like he’s damaging my brand with his behavior,” the proprietor of LGF said. Last month, Charles C. Johnson showed up at a Los Angeles apartment where the other Johnson used to live and tweeted a photo of it. The former resident was unamused: “He’s been so incredibly vicious towards me on Twitter that it’s hard to feel that this is just a harmless prank,” he said, describing Charles C. Johnson as an “egomaniacal bully and a malignant narcissist whose behavior borders on and sometimes crosses into outright stalking.”(The founder of Little Green Footballs was once a pretty controversial blogger himself but has since mellowed, moving towards the center and deleting some of his old posts.)

Is this correct or not? Seems fishy to me.

True. There needs to be a carrot and stick approach to D voter activism —- they need to show up in the primaries to keep the elected officials honest (i.e., the stick) and they also need to show up in all general elections to oppose the Republicans (i.e., the carrot).

Ahh, sounds much more plausible. I thought I’d heard you mention before how you’d never deleted anything despite claims to the contrary.

Bad on politico though. They had spoken to you about the story. The smart thing is do your background research first and then get any clarifications during the interview. That way what runs is accurate.

Why SHOULD they if they don’t get votes?

If Democratic voters won’t stand up for them consistently (i.e. midterms), then OF COURSE they won’t stand up for Democratic principles.

THAT’S the real problem.

That’s a bit like saying of a performer, “He’s doing a shitty job on purpose and he won’t do it right until the audiences are bigger.”

Had Hitler not personally intervened in the planning of and execution of Operation Barbarossa, it would have been entirely possible that the Germans could have won, or at least made out like bandits before suing for peace, in their theatre of WWII.

That’s often argued but looking at the nature of the German economy and their lack of natural resources (see “The Wages of Destruction: The Making and Breaking of the Nazi Economy” by Adam Tooze). They were receiving critical war resources from the Soviets right up until a couple of hours prior to the invasion and never fully replaced those supplies.

I think it is far more accurate to say they lost WWII before they even started it. Essentially there was no way they could win a war against their European neighbors if they invaded the Soviet Union and, ideologically, there was no way they could not invade.

The impression I have is that Hitler was honestly surprised that invading Poland was enough to get declarations of war out of the west. Had that not happened, he would have been able to prepare for a one-front war against the USSR, and western intervention to prop up Stalin would have been unlikely.

I’m just noting that when we DID have more Dems (if not better ones), we actually made progress, and they were “rewarded” by low turnout. It then becomes a logical strategy to try to appeal to the voters who DO persist, even though they are not a fit.

I maintain that any strategy that can’t get out a persistent bloc of progressive voters isn’t going to elect a persistent slate of officials.

re: #382 EPR-radar

Indeed. However, the caption for that photo is actually pretty far off. I’m sure Hitler was much more bothered by losing to subhuman communists (in his view) on the Eastern Front than by losing to the US and allies in the West.

Hitler’s first order of business on his eastern front was killing the Jews, at which alas he was totally successful, with a good deal of help from the USSR. Yeesh, what an utter shithole and a blight on the history of “humanity.”

True. As has been noted above, the other side trumpets their policies no matter what. Voters know what they’re going to get when they vote for them and that seems to work. Notorious, destructive assholes like Scott Walker were re-elected despite being notorious destructive assholes. Democrats talk a good game and then too many of them throw down their rifles and run the first time someone calls them a liberal or shouts “Class warfare!”

Always to wonder if the homes they went to are safe and loving or they ended up with asshole floor-shitters or someone who will sell them out and squish them under a boot heel for a few more bucks and a quid pro quo.

Sigh.

Billionaire Red McCombs has been trying to build an obscene 10,000-person “village” at the base of Wolf Creek Ski Area in southern Colorado. To give you an idea of how boneheaded this is, the director of the San Juan Citizens Alliance wrote Red a letter.

December 10, 2014

Dear Red,

How are things back in Texas? Peggy Sue and I are vacationing in Durango. Unseasonably warm, thank goodness. If this is global warming, you can officially call me a fan.

Buying any sports franchises this holiday season? The Spurs, the Vikings, what’s next? How about the Houston Dynamo? Just pulling your leg, my friend. We both know soccer isn’t a real sport.

So, getting down to business, I’ve wanted to talk with you about something for a while now. It’s the Wolf Creek Village thing you’ve been working on for - what’s it been now - 28 years?

Talking to the people who live here, the question I get is: He wants to do what now? Build a 10,000-person “village” at over 10,000 feet on Wolf Creek Pass? Right smack in the middle of lynx habitat and high-altitude wetlands? Twenty miles from the nearest town and with poor access to basic utilities, much less emergency services? Come again?

It is one of the snarkiest things I’ve ever read about a proposed ski area development, ever.

Read the whole thing.

At least there was one hilarious moment in my evening while out doing nightie walkies with the friends (human and dog) we walk with every night. Just as we were walking past several other park residents who were out visiting and enjoying the lovely evening, my friend said “Well, my hole is bigger than yours.” Smartass that I am, I noted the sudden silence of those we passed at this rather shocking announcement by responding, “You’ve given birth so I’m sure you do!”

What were we actually talking about? Our built-in microwave ovens. Mine cratered on Thanksgiving day and I’ve been having a helluva time replacing it with one that will fit.

Moral of the story: context is everything.

Politico is back tonight with yet another edition of their ongoing “Draft Mitt Romney 2016” series. In this week’s episode, Mitt is not impressed with the current field (as if there WERE a current field):

Romney “tells people not to commit to a candidate that is not their first choice and that they aren’t excited about,”

But Mitt…how do you think you ended up getting any support in 2012?!?!?

Also, it seems that Mitt fanciers and Jeb Bush fans may not like each other all that much.

Looking at the vote breakdown, I was kind of surprised that these Dems voted yes:

James Clyburn (I was equally surprised that he voted yes on Keystone)
Marci Kaptur

The no votes by Repubicans? Mostly loons (including the whole Republican contingent from my loony state.) I’m assuming they voted no because they WANTED to shut down the government. (You just know that when Bachmann, GOHMERT, Steve King and Marsha Blackburn vote with the majority of Dems, there’s some whacked reason for it.)
