Antoine’s comments:
This guitar is unbelievable! Not only the bass strings sound like a grand piano but the whole register sings like an orchestra (listen at: 0:11)! The trebles are big and round. The clarity is unmatched. This is a small guitar body but it sounds so big that it’s hard to believe. It’s a very nervous guitar with an amazing sustain. You can really hear that at 0:19 in the video. I decided to wait a little longer on this chord because the guitar would not let it fade out! I really like the new headstock design. That’s something Mario and I have been talking about lately and he decided to make it. I also really like the contrast of the dark lines vs the bright colours of the spruce and maple. Very classy! It’s a guitar suitable for any type of playing style and really shines for fingerstyle. This guitar COULD BE YOURS! I would be jealous!

I use Ernie Ball aluminium/bronze medium strings.

This is great. And that guitar really does have outstanding tone.

Listened to this again - that guitar is unreal. One of the best-sounding acoustics I think I’ve ever heard.

Absolutely amazing.

Seems to be a hybrid of classical and steel-string design.

That is unreal…. and that is some of the most beautiful maple I’ve seen in a long time. I can’t believe how that just sustains and sustains.

A true work of art on many levels and skills.

I don’t know if this is netflix idea of a joke, but I’m not sure how a movie about a Black blues guitarist who takes in a drug addled white girl is in any way, shape or form similar to 3 middle aged and older British men making snarky comments while testing really neat cars.

Really… you think they are in any way the same????

And yes… this actually did come up for me a while back.

Then you must have missed the Top Gear episode where one of them shouted, “I have had it with these mother-fucking snakes on this mother-fucking Lamborghini!”

Tried watching Top Gear on Netflix. It only took one episode for me to learn that half-million dollar cars are pretty neat. Who knew? Then it was back to Midsomer Murders.

Evening Lizardim from the weirdly warm wild north country. It’s been … a real adventurous month or so since last we spoke - I remember talking to everyone about going to fish country for Thanksgiving, and then life got raw and gritty and stuff happened. The ins and outs of it aren’t really so much for public consumption, but I’m here and the fish family are all doing well. Well, except for the nephew with leukemia; while he’s still with us, the doctors have told his family to start saying their goodbyes. I hope all is well among the lizardfolk and that there have not been too many high-profile applications of the banhammer while my world turned upside down (and right side up again, because otherwise that’d be just awkward.)

Went to two last night. Chamber of Commerce shindig (I crashed with some friends.) Boring, obnoxious—one woman was going around saying, “I’m going to say Merry Christmas while we still can.” I almost puked. You poor, put upon, white Christian, you. Crowd was so white, you needed sunglasses.

Then on to one of our Democratic gatherings. Great food, good folks, fun conversations. As we were driving home, I figured it must be about midnight—it was 8:30! I felt so old.

Next week is our Democratic women’s group party. I organize that one—always have some sort of game, like match the politician to the quote. Going easy on them this year—going to do “celebrity politics.” If they pull a name that’s a dem, they get to pick from the good prizes; if they pull a Repub, they get the not-so-good prizes.

CCJ has now hit the big time with an entry in the Urban Dictionary.

Sue for libel

Idiom verb To have a bowel movement in an inappropriate location.

Origin: the term originates with pretend-journalist Chuck C. Johnson, known primarily for (1) threatening to sue people for libel, (2) being accused of shitting on the floor, (3) threatening to sue people for libel for referring to him shitting on the floor.

I’m often struck by how silly some (loosely termed) Sci-Fi shows can be, when trying to present the future or some other corner of the galaxy.

Like when beings from different planets all meet in a bar and breath the same air and drink the same drinks.

Or how, for example on Stargate SG1, today’s humans can venture to other worlds and automatically be understood speaking English. (And it’s especially weird in SG1 because for some reason the inhabitants of Abydos didn’t get the memo that the universe speaks English.)

Anyway, one stark example of this is showing humans a couple of thousands of years in the future… and the producers do their best to have a racially-slotted character be presented as if today’s population mix will be the same as that many centuries in the future.

With the taboo of miscegenation in the past for all but the real throwbacks (which still exist in this country and elsewhere), we can expect that in a couple of centuries a large segment of the American (and many other nations) population to be thoroughly mixed with ancestors from all sorts of backgrounds.

This is what of course the likes of Brimelow and Buchanan and the rest of the haters fear.

I’d like to see a TV show set 4 centuries in the future America where all the characters have to be cast with people of indeterminate (and admixed) background. No obvious all European or mostly African ancestry, just all light brownish. It’d be hilarious to see the reviews.

Well, Idiocracy presents America in mostly a negative light. I was hoping for something a bit more positive.

87 freetoken  Dec 13, 2014 1:23:39am

Speaking of hoping for the positive, there wasn’t much to live-blog about his year’s UNFCCC COP20 meeting. Pretty much the same old stuff, but with less fireworks, which means it was even more boring than usual.

Detected a definite tenor change. Whatever woo President Obama put on the Chinese looks like it had some effect. Or perhaps I’ve got it backwards and the Chinese activated their Manchurian candidate. Regardless, less open pissing and moaning over tangential issues.

I’ve been long convinced that the UNFCCC was not created to actually solve the problem of climate change. Rather, like all UN organizations it is merely there to get everyone in the same room talking, still operating on the old belief that as long as we’re talking to each other we won’t be shooting each other.

And perhaps that’s the best we can do.

State to family planning clinics: You owe us millions

Jennifer Waloway, a nurse practitioner who oversees six family planning clinics in northeastern Wisconsin, was opening the mail in August when she came upon a letter from the state.

It asked NEWCAP Community Health Services, which runs the clinics, to please submit a check payable to the State of Wisconsin. The amount: $1,169,837.10.

“I was a little in shock,” Waloway said.

The letter from the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Health Services said its audit showed that NEWCAP incorrectly had billed — and been paid — by the Medicaid and BadgerCare Plus programs for prescription drugs and for some services in 2010 and 2011. The requested repayment was just slightly less than the clinics’ estimated revenue of $1.2 million for all of this year.

Family Planning Health Services, which operates 11 clinics in north-central Wisconsin, received a similar letter later that month. It was asked to send a check for $2,324,750.73.

The organization, based in Wausau, has annual revenue of about $3.4 million and operates at a slight loss.

re: #83 freetoken

In some cases, like SG-1, in a 42 minute show writers don’t have time to do 10-15 minutes on learning the natives’ language. The first season of Farscape played the scared to eat anything trope for laughs with the main character being the only Earthling in a distant part of the galaxy and scared to eat or drink anything because he didn’t know how it would react with his body.

I think in some ways Mass Effect managed to show some of the resulting genetic diversity that was a result of the taboo of miscegenation dying away. For example, only character in the entire series (including comics, etc.) had blonde hair due to darker hair being the dominant trait. In addition, a lot of the white characters seemed to be a few shades darker skin that one would expect (although, the first Mass Effect game is only set in 2183).

I agree with you. I don’t know if it’ll ever be a TV show ;) but I’m constructing a set of sci-fi stories that are set in about that timeframe, and I had exactly the same thought.

In the 90’s the multi-culti push meant that stories with groups of people would look like the writers ran down a checklist… Black character, Asian character, etc. Hell maybe they did have an actual checklist they used, at the demand of producers.

Anecdotally I’d say about 50% of the families I know of in my small workaday world are what would be called “mixed race”, which means our precious little Texas white girls are married to black men or 3rd generation Hispanic guys, and usually working on their third kid. The trend is to blend!

Wars are a big driver of cultural mixing, too, and I imagine we’re going to see a lot of both in the future. When coastlines and resources really start disappearing in the next century or so, the old paradigms are going to be flushed down the crapper with prejudice.

re: #83 freetoken

Yeah, Sci-Fi writers have had to use different literary devices to overcome the language thing. Douglas Adams used the Babel Fish, Star Trek the Universal Translator. SG-1 had Daniel and his savant ability with languages.

Most of the Sci-Fi I’ve read uses a version of one of the 3 or they work the langauge difference into the storyline. Highlighting the difficulties of learning a new language while trying to accomplish their goal.

Seems future humans are more like Europeans, often being fluent in more than one language and have the tools to become proficient in new languages their entire lives.

Okay…this is cute. Time to go walk the dogs.

Our teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and I said, “Fried chicken.”
She said I wasn’t funny, but she couldn’t have been right, because everyone else laughed.

My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal.
I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA.
He said they love animals very much.

I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef. Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal’s office.
I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again.

The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was.
I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken.

She sent me back to the principal’s office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again.

I don’t understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn’t like it when I am.

Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous person I admired most. I told her, “Colonel Sanders.”
Guess where the fuck I am now…

I gotta love my Dad. He lives about 100 miles south of Tampa, (Port Charlotte to be precise). I’m going down to visit him Christmas week, and out of the blue he asked me “Hey, while you’re down here, you want to go do a dive trip?”. We were already planning on making a run down to Key Largo / Islamorada for a couple of days, but I hadn’t even considered it, since scuba isn’t quite a “spectator activity”.

Let us see…. a fun dive in warm water with brightly colored fishes and coral… took about a second to decide “Sure”. Going to be two wild and crazy bachelors wandering the Keys that week. Booking him the Glass Bottom Boat tour, he always loves that.

At some point I have to leave Casa Del Steve and go get supplies, but I’m betting that my best time to hit the stores might be around 3 PM local. Need an app like there is for traffic, how busy the stores are.
