Chuck C. Johnson: “I’m One of Those Kids Who Was Bullied All His Life”

Twisted
Wingnuts • Views: 35,810

Our pal Chuck C. Johnson is having a great run of publicity, and now he gets his own New York Times profile. The old adage is that there’s no bad publicity, but this article is … unflattering, to say the least: Sowing Mayhem, One Click at a Time.

If you’ve been following our posts on this viciously unethical and dishonest right wing hatchet man, you won’t learn anything new about Chuck from David Carr’s piece, but Carr does spend more time on Chuck’s many failures and incompetent mistakes than some of the other articles we’ve seen in the past week.

However, this one little piece of the profile was the most revealing to me:

In a phone call, he made it clear that he sees himself as part of the vanguard of Internet news, although he did add that some of what he is up to is a response to a lifetime of slights.

I’m basically one of those kids who was bullied all his life,” he said. He’s now extracting payback, one post at a time.

That cuts right to the essence of what could make a person develop into such a raging sociopath. He’s lashing out at a world by which he feels deeply wronged, getting revenge for every slight and insult and dismissal he suffered as a young boy by inflicting as much pain on his targets as he possibly can.

I know it’s a pat explanation, but it sure fits.

YouTube videos in comments now show up with a thumbnail image of the video instead of that big gray button.

For example:

Going to go out on a limb here and suggest what CCJ calls bullying, everyone else called being tired of putting up with his bullshit.

“Unflattering”? This is the NYT. That’s how they say he’s a syphilitic pustule.

But he’s not attacking those who bullied him. He’s attacking the poor, minorities, women.

Reportedly he’s been purposefully needling people for fucking ever, and I believe it. Without excusing the bullying he experienced, I’m sure he did everything possible to antagonize, insult, demean and degrade his fellow students. It’s quite obvious that he never learned even the smallest modicum of empathy for other human beings, and has for a very long time been using his purported autism as an excuse to behave in the most narcissistic, antisocial, histrionic, manipulative and disingenuous way imaginable. That he’s received a lot of pushback for this is predictable. That he’s never once learned to moderate his behavior is a testament to an abjectly obstinate, angry and self centered personality.

I’m going to be blunt here: I was a victim of bullying all growing up. It gives you the urge to lash out in some really weird, fucked-up ways. The key is to GROW THE FUCK Up and learn to control that urge, or it will destroy you (or someone close to you, as I discovered to my sorrow). Being bullied is not an excuse to act like a royal jackass.

At some point, and I was a victim as well, at some point you start to figure out that the people doing the bullying have their own problems and in some ways they are worse than yours. Eventually you learn to ignore the bullying and move on with your life. I admit there are times I fantasize about winning the lottery, and going back to fuck up their lives, but I realize that means that it won’t remove the damage they did, and just indicates I’m still letting them have control over me.

Which means he has responded to being bullied by becoming a bully himself. It’s a pity that the only people he feels are weaker than he is are the powerless.

11 ObserverArt  Dec 15, 2014 2:36:23pm

I’m not buying he was bullied. I will buy that he was picked on as a kid.

I’m thinking he was the little do-gooder in his class. He was kissing the butts of all the teachers and anyone else in authority no matter what. He was the kid that told everyone they were doing everything wrong and if it wasn’t followed to some preexisting letter then he would go above everyone and tattle on them to the teachers and parents. He probably also spread lies in rumors about people.

Why would I think that way?

Because I have a belief people don’t really change a lot from the way they were from about 12 years old on. They do get worse though!

The bullied became the bully and, because he never got over that, Chuck is so impudent as an adult, he still can’t take on those “his own size.”

So, he takes on those that he perceives to be weaker than him, so he can chalk up the “victories” he never had when he was growing up.

Petty, infantile piece of shit…

“Have you ever read the book or heard of the book ‘Encyclopedia Brown’?” he asked, referring to a series about a boy detective. “That’s the capacity in which I help them. I don’t go out of my way to discuss the kind of, shall we say, clandestine work I do, because the nature of the work has to be clandestine in order for it be effective.”

Read the comments at Gawker by people who knew him in school. He was not well liked. At all. He started a smear campaign against a professor at Clairmont McKenna College (I think) while he was there, and other students from the time basicaly confirm that even thought the school faculty is very conservative (ex Reagan era types) who connected him with the wingnut gravytrain writing circuit…they could not wait to get rid of the obnxoious little ass.

I wouldn’t doubt he was bullied. He very well could have, and bullying can fuck you up hardcore, even decades later. It warps your worldview during your most formative years.

I just don’t find much sympathy for those who end up coping by turning into massive asshole bullies in their own right. And that’s what Chuckles is, IF he was bullied. He became someone who punches down as well, an oppressor, someone who hurts people who have less power, just because he can, and encourages others to join in as well for his own ego.

EDIT: Yeah, missed a very important word there in the second paragraph.

I contend that CCJ was never actually bullied. Instead he was his normal charming self in school and his classmates refused to put up with his bullshit.
Rather than admit to the fact that he is a horrible sack of shit, CCJ rationalized this by saying he was being bullied.

24 Targetpractice  Dec 15, 2014 2:52:29pm

Was I bullied in school? Yes. Did I lash out as I got older? Yes. What happened? I got punished time and again until I finally realized I was getting nowhere, I was alienating others, and frustrating the fuck out of my folks who couldn’t understand why I’d do such stupid shit. Then I grew the fuck up and just learned to ignore the bullies. Even came to terms with a few of them and realized that others just needled me because I reacted.

I didn’t dedicate the rest of my life to getting back at the bullies. And I sure as fuck didn’t rationalize the bullying I was subjected to as my being better than them.

25 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)  Dec 15, 2014 2:55:39pm

I was bullied as a kid. At first for being one of the only white kids in an all-black and Latino school, then for being a nerdy, bookish white kid in a brutally stupid white working-class neighborhood.

I have no need to take it out on anyone.

26 nines09  Dec 15, 2014 2:55:46pm

Typical. So our stalwart purveyor of filth was bullied? So he can piss on, lie about and cheat everyone because….He was bullied? Keep that wheel rolling. Don’t break that cycle. What a cretinous pile of screwed up molecules. By his standards I should be able to kill a few people. Poor him. Scum.

27 ObserverArt  Dec 15, 2014 2:58:27pm

I was bullied a bit in grade school. I was never one of the cool kids, because as I explained, I was from ‘the other side of the tracks’ and not from the neighborhoods that fed the college prep Catholic school I attended.

I used that experience to eventually win over the guys that bullied me by not being a crybaby and not going to the teachers about being bullied. I asked my older brothers what to do, and they said the worst thing to do was cry about it. Stand up for yourself.

So in a way I got in their faces but not in a threatening and fighting way. I didn’t want to become another violent bully. And I never was a fighter. I basically asked them what their problem with me was and we all worked it out. If you don’t give the bully the reaction they want, it is no fun for them. I confused them. Didn’t cry. Didn’t fight.

I don’t know how all people act, but many people do not turn into bullies because they were bullied. Some people actually learn from it and just become decent folks…far from bullies.

I’m guessing it’s a little of both. Kids probably did bully him early on because he’s so odd, but he also didn’t get the intervention that he desperately needed. Sometime after that is when his behavior transitioned from that of a troubled kid who just hadn’t been given the opportunity or tools necessary to socialize properly to the pathology of a developing adult with responsibility for charting their own path. He probably is autistic and probably was bullied, he’s also become a total dick of an adult who refuses to take responsibility for his own bullying and atrocious behavior.

Gun control did actually work in this case, at least compared to the US. I’m guessing that the reason that only two hostages died is because he could only get a Category A weapon, which means his shotgun was probably a double barrel at best, not a pump action or semi-auto.

My wife sure is boring right now.
She spent all afternoon sleeping in her hospital bed while I sat there.
I poked her in the side, she woke up and said “Hi sweetie”. She then fell back asleep.
I poked her in the side, she woke up and said “Hi sweetie” and fell right back to sleep.
So I poked her in the side again, she woke up and asked “Where is the black button?”
I asked “What black button?”
“There is a wire with a black button on the end. I was just holding it.”
I answered “Here it is. What do you need the black button for?”
She replied “It gives me a dose of painkiller when I press it”.
“Oh. Why do you need painkiller?”
She answers “I have this poking pain in my side.”

Oh yeah, I definitely agree. But you know assholes and their action movie fantasies, imagining that, if they were in that situation and had their gun on hand, they’d be the heroic crack shot defusing the situation like a real man: with a double tap.

And trying to convince them that they’re fucking delusional and basing their world view off a caricature only makes them believe themselves to be that much more superior compared to trained professionals.

Chuck is currently having a Twitter fit about this comment - J.K. Trotter is relentlessly trolling him.

Which of These Disgusting Chuck Johnson Rumors Are True?

Charlie Johnson is one of the worst people I’ve ever met. I first encountered him in 6th grade. That was the first combination of the four elementary schools in the town into one middle school. Anyway, some time had passed. I cannot recall how far into the school year it was. I knew about Charlie. He was one of those people everyone pretty much avoided. He was strange. I don’t know that anyone called him a friend. We were at the point where I didn’t like him, and he didn’t like me either. So there must have been some previous encounter between us that was unpleasant. But I cannot recall that instance. Any previous encounter was erased by what occurred in our science class one afternoon. We were scheduled to watch the film “Stand And Deliver” starring Edward James Olmos. It’s the one where he teaches inner city kids Calculus. I sat down and for some reason Charlie sat directly to my left. We weren’t friends obviously and wouldn’t normally be near each other. I tried to ignore the fact that he was there and watch the movie. But he was being a pest. We didn’t make it too far into the film before he threatened me. I questioned the resolve of his threat. What happened next really surprised me. Charlie pulled out a ballpoint pen. From where I didn’t see. Then he immediately jammed it into my kneecap. It happened very abruptly. He started muttering something to me in German with anger in his eyes and funk on his breath. Then he withdrew the pen. I immediately stood up, walked over to the back of the room where my science teacher was and explained what happened. I don’t think she believed me until I raised my pant leg over my knee and showed her the bloody spot Charlie put in my knee. She called him over. He admitted he did it. But then he tried to blame it on me. My science teacher sent me to the nurse’s office. As far as I know, Charlie was never disciplined for this incident.

You may wonder why Charlie muttered to me in German when he stabbed me. The only explanation I can give is that he did so because he knew I was Jewish.

Spot on. I don’t really care how much (or how little) CCJ was bullied as a child. What he’s doing now is totally unacceptable. In a reasonable society, he would have long since made himself into a total outcast.

In the present-day US, he might just manage to get on wingnut welfare. Yet more evidence that US conservatism is increasingly malicious and insane every year.

Junior high and high school are horrible places filled with horrible people called classmates (and teachers and principals). Most of us get out of there and quit being bullies and grow up. I was badly bullied. Taught me compassion for others. But not people like Chuck. He is not a sociopath…a violent, abusive, or neglectful childhood did not do this, and it takes a lot to create a sociopath.

Nope, he was born this way. I am confident that if we had the stomach to look into his childhood history we would find cruelty to animals, fire-setting, and late toilet training/bed wetting.

We already know about his defecation issues.

59 lawhawk  Dec 15, 2014 3:58:14pm

Every time things get tough for Chuck, he claims he’s got autism, or blames it on being bullied or some other external action that makes him act the way he does.

It’s the complete opposite for taking personal responsibility for his own actions.

Act like a sociopath, and attack people for accurately and completely quoting him at length.

Act like a sociopath and attack people who were killed because police shot them to death even though they were unarmed. Michael Brown comes to mind. Seeking out criminal records that didn’t exist (and sued to try and get them released - only to be rebuffed and explicitly rejected because Brown didn’t have a criminal record that CCJ claimed - a murder rap as a juvenile. He did so unprovoked.

And blame everyone else for his continued malfeasance all while ignoring all that personal responsibility that conservatives fondly throw about and ignore with reckless abandon.

Now, do I doubt that he was bullied as a kid? I wouldn’t doubt it. I was bullied. Lots of people are. But that doesn’t come to define most of us, and people who are bullied usually don’t use that as a crutch/excuse for everything they do afterwards.

Some use it as an opportunity for doing good - promoting justice or working with victims. Empathy. Basic human emotion.

But Chuck, he uses it to fuel his ragegasm against anyone who gets in the way of his agenda (whatever it is that day).

I fear this will not end well for him. That much hate/fear/sociopathy isn’t good for a person (or those around him).

I’m going to jump to Chuckie’s defense here. Well sort of.

As a kid I was rejected by classmates from kindergarten to grade 11. At first I thought it was because I was ugly. Then I thought it was because I was stupid, or stupid and ugly. It was only later after talking with my brother and a few friends that I found out I was saying hurtful things to others and acting as if I was better than them, smarter, taller, better looking, take your pick. What was really happening was a chain of events not fully under my control.

When I was in elementary school, I would say things that insulted others. I didn’t know what I was saying was hurtful because I couldn’t pick up on their body language clues and I was terribly short of empathy. They rejected me, and gave me many beatings because of those hurtful comments, but I assumed it was something else, things I knew were important because my parents and neighbour kids told me they were. Or so I thought.

I over compensated by trying to know everything, and telling everyone around how much I knew. I was trying to get their acceptance by showing them I wasn’t stupid, but they took it as arrogance. I couldn’t tell them I was unsure of myself because it was a sign of weakness.

In any case, I had to learn over many years that I didn’t have to be brilliant all the time, nor the best looking dude in the room to be accepted, I just had to learn and express empathy. I’m still learning. I’m still saying stupid hurtful, or boastful things, but I’m now self aware enough to recognize it often enough that I can try to correct it.

Chuckie hasn’t done this. He’s chosen to wallow in the rejection, and instead of using his knowledge of his autism to correct how he reacts to others he’s using it as an excuse to do the exact opposite. He hasn’t bothered to learn from others. He’s too busy looking for revenge where there really isn’t any room or need for it.

Also: the emerging portrait of CCJ as a poor little bullied kid who’s grown up to bully anyone who he perceives as being vulnerable and/or powerless adds a layer of pathos to the shit sammich that is CCJ. At the end of all of this, he’s going to wind up like that shivering, raw homunculus that’s all that’s left of Voldemort at the end of “Deathly Hallows.” The Gawker piece is pretty much the starter pistol for the karma payback that’s coming.

When do they stop hiding their boobs?

Having seen what the snake pulls up (I will spare you all) …either the liquid stuff will a) not be strong enough or b) cause major problems down the road.

It sucks, it’s nasty to do, but it is cheaper than the plumber.

It can be damaging to the pipes. It depends on the type of plumbing you have in your house.

I knew that Der Spiegel thing was a setup as soon as he tweeted about it.

Seriously, if a reporter for a magazine contacts you, have the goddamned acumen to make them email you from an account @thatfuckingmagazine ! Then copy and paste the address, compose a separate reply, and see if they respond to that.

I hesitate to say this because someone might tell it to CCJ and prevent him from getting suckered the exact same way again. But he’s such an imbecile that I’m certain he’ll fall for an even stupider trap in the future.

I mean, the question “How do you deal with online criticism so effectively?” What kind of asshole looks at that and doesn’t think they’re being scammed? It’s such an obvious, obsequious set up designed to get him to preen and say something ridiculous, which of course is exactly what he does.

The entire set of questions he responded to was like that, there were more red flags than a fucking Soviet Era May Day parade.
