Monday Night Jam: Sean Rowe, “1952 Vincent Black Lightning”

Red hair and black leather

Tonight’s musical tour de force is Sean Rowe’s fierce rendition of Richard Thompson’s classic folk ballad, “1952 Vincent Black Lightning.” An intense performance of a great, great song.

Thompson described this as “a simple boy-meets-girl story, complicated somewhat by the presence of a motorcycle.”

Said Red Molly to James, that’s a fine motorbike
A girl could feel special on any such like
Said James to Red Molly, well my hat’s off to you
It’s a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952
And I’ve seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme
And he pulled her on behind
And down to Box Hill they did ride

Said James to Red Molly, here’s a ring for your right hand
But I’ll tell you in earnest I’m a dangerous man
I’ve fought with the law since I was seventeen
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine
Now I’m 21 years, I might make 22
And I don’t mind dying, but for the love of you
And if fate should break my stride
Then I’ll give you my Vincent to ride

Come down, come down, Red Molly, called Sergeant McRae
For they’ve taken young James Adie for armed robbery
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside
Oh, come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside
When she came to the hospital, there wasn’t much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
And said I’ll give you my Vincent to ride

Says James, in my opinion, there’s nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeveses won’t do
They don’t have a soul like a Vincent 52
He reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys
He said I’ve got no further use for these
I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home
And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride

I’m watching some Hercule Poirot on Netflixs. I’ve noticed that each time he is invited to some country estate, somebody dies under mysterious circumstances. Perhaps he is the greatest serial killer of all time, not just committing the crime, but somehow hypnotizing someone into taking the fall for it. /diabolical

Posted this before, but it’s the best 2 minutes of bikes on the Intertubes. This SR500 and mine came down the same assembly line. Then their paths diverged. Seriously.

(There was a lot more work than first apparent in the LA night shoots.)

Good version to be sure. But the original was soooo intense. I always think it’s an older song than it is, that it’s from the days of “Shoot Out The Lights” or even “I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight” time frame. But no, wiki says 1991…

I used to say that about Angela Lansbury’s character on ‘Murder, She Wrote.’ Everywhere she went, people dropped dead.

We started calling the program ‘Murder, She Caused.’

Guest room is set back to rights after the most recent houseguest’s departure, with the accompanying bittersweet farewell and relief at having the house to oneself again.

Christmas presents are taunting me on the living room floor, demanding wrapping so I can try to get things sent out tomorrow. Sigh.

I need to wrap Mrs. Fish’s Christmas gift. I can’t hardly motivate myself to do it, though. And tonight would’ve been perfect, with her being gone most of the evening shopping for stocking stuffers and groceries.

Mrs. Fish’s gift is a bit out of the ordinary. I couldn’t afford big bling this year, and I’m not the sort of guy who buys my wife lingerie as a gift for her - that’s a gift for me, thank you very much. Nor am I going to insult her by buying her some kind of domestic appliance or utensil as a gift, no sir. Instead, this year is a set of 4000 thread Egyptian cotton sheets. I would’ve gone with silk, but those were also out of my price range.

The mini food processor from my parents didn’t make it to under the tree. That was too useful. I begged and got permission to open it early and it has already been used for tapenade.

His anniversary present (in Nov.) was a wooden mechanical clock that we will get to put together …together. His birthday is in February. Sheets, huh. I will have to consider that.

We’ve pretty much destroyed all of ours and Mrs. Fish has always wanted a set of really, really nice ones for the master bedroom for personal enjoyment purposes. And so I came up with the idea.

So, police want to complain about pro sports players and the t-shirts they’ve worn in solidarity with protesters against excessive force and officer-involved shooting deaths?

See and raise.

This is a pervasive mindset, and it runs from the heads of departments on down. It’s a complete lack of respect for the communities they serve. And with the militarization of police forces nationally, it’s only gotten worse.

It sounds lovely to me. I love silk, but I really wouldn’t want silk sheets. If your feet (or hands, or any other body part) aren’t perfectly smooth, silk tends to catch. I am very fond of silk nightgowns, however, but for sheets, I’m a 100% cotton (preferably LL Bean percale) sheet fan.

Hmmm… if this is a sign of things to come with Congress, it wont be pretty. Call it incompetence/showboating, and getting called for it.

Boehner complains about the failure of the Senate to pass the terrorism insurance bill, except that anyone who has access to bill tracking (IOW - everyone via the thomas.loc.gov site) knows that the Senate passed it months ago in bipartisan fashion (93-4). Had the GOP controlled House put it up to a vote months ago, it wouldn’t be an issue.

So, Boehner tries to play gotcha, only to get played by Schumer.

Though it is no longer supported as was never used much, the old Apple iWeb lent itself to so much more creative thinking than Dreamweaver.

I’ve tried Dreamweaver since at least 2009 and all it has ever been is a collection of bad user interface experiences and never ending links to Adobe mind-think. Sure, it has all the bells and whistles, but most people don’t need them, and the reason most of the web used to be so boring and most web pages appearing similar is down to the dominance of Dreamweaver.

Thankfully the rise of iPhone forced a rethink of the Web and what websites ought to look like.

Still, I find that for making a simple web site (on my own domain) to be quite frustrating, if only because the tedium of the medium (HTML, etc.) takes over and my creativity gets squashed by a never ending stream of ASCII characters marauding across the imagination, stomping the true muses.

Nice, but I saw Richard do this solo at Hardly Strictly in Golden Gate Park a couple of years ago, and no one will ever beat that. Surprisingly, much of the audience did not seem familiar with his work, but he silenced them with the first verse and by the time he soared into the “carry me home” climax jaws were dropping all around. I’ve seen him several times, and he’s never been bad but that afternoon he was fabulous.

The SR’s are instant classics. The 500 only sold here for a few years, but it’s still supported in Japan and Europe. The XT, TT and SRs are still competitive racers.

I definitely agree with that. I also like that Yamaha is selling a bike with a modern fuel injection system on an air-cooled, kick-start only thumper. (I’m in the camp that thinks an air cooled engine in a double cradle frame is what a motorcycle is supposed to look like.)

I’m old skool R&B (Carla Thomas, Detroit Junior, Junior Parker, et alia), so my opinion probably doesn’t amount to a hill of beans, but D’Angelo has a lot of talent. His last record was very original, so I’ll definitely check his new one out. The two cuts I’ve heard remind me a lot of Rufus Wainwright, Anthony and the Johnsons, and Junior Parker himself. I like the lush orchestrations, which remind me of Nelson Riddle.

(There was a lot more work than first apparent in the LA night shoots.)

I quit riding street motorcycles when I moved to Miami in the mid-1980s.

Don’t think it is necessary to explain why.

OK, since you asked - e. g. when the stoplight changed to green:

1. You still looked both ways to make sure someone wasn’t running the red light because…

2. If you were going to make a left turn at the stoplight, you had to check your driver’s side mirror to make sure some “video driver” wasn’t trying to pass you on the left in the opposing lane and cut you off while they continued straight thru the intersection.

As Dave Barry wrote, “come back to Miami, we weren’t shooting at you.”

Whoa 17% interest rates!

Russia on Monday announced that it would hike its key interest rate to 17 percent, effective Tuesday, citing rising devaluation and inflation risks.

The bank had raised the rate to 10.5 percent last week in an effort to stem a run on its currency.
“This decision is aimed at limiting substantially increased ruble depreciation risks and inflation risks,” the central bank said in a statement. The decision is effective starting Dec 16.

“All it is is a temporary stem in the decline of the ruble,” Gartman told CNBC Monday. “The problems that it’s going to create for the Russian economy, for the Russian people and for Mr. Putin, [will be] very severe.”

Gartman sees the ruble trading at 100 against the dollar soon. The currency has tumbled some 50 percent year-to-date.

“This is really extraordinary to watch,” Gartman said. “I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Russians we selling gold, they have no choice. What else can they sell? They can’t sell any crude oil anymore.”

The first two hours of skiing today, my buddy and I were in need of a cannabis pipe as neither of us brought one. We were split up from our group and took some amazing runs (that included dangerous tree skiing as the deadfall is still not completely covered up). We stopped at one of the mountaintop lodges to get on our glowing rectangles (phones) to try and regroup the crew, which I dubbed Team Hard Core (THC). So my friend and I are sitting in the lodge and he says “I wish we had a pipe.”

My parents were careful to tell me about their time on Kwaj and about the flights back. The R4 (C47) had no cabin heat so my crib for that flight was a cardboard box lined with blankets and fitted with a light bulb that worked on aircraft power for additional heat. Twenty-one years later I flew from Kingsville, Texas, to NALF El Centro, CA in another R4. That one was only seven years younger than I was at the time. Good sightseeing on that hop because we had no cabin oxygen fitted and so had to fly through the mountain passes.

162 SteveMcGaziBolaGate  Dec 15, 2014 11:49:24pm

In Philadelphia Pierre Robert on WMMR plays work force blocks at noonish. When he used to play Jackson Browne he would always play a couple songs that are familiar but I can’t quite remember enough words. These days he may get around to JB maybe once every couple months, but he makes sure to play the good stuff, instead of the hits. He almost always digs deep when he does the blocks. He found a vocal track for “Pressure” (just Mercury and Bowie) which was so cool.

163 SteveMcGaziBolaGate  Dec 15, 2014 11:52:26pm

I had a bunch of interesting old-timers at my little old factory. One was a squadron mate of President George H. Bush (the smart one). Anyway another guy was a sergeant with a lot of varied postings. The funniest thing he remembers was when he was an MP at Ohmygoddo, when a second louie let a briefcase bust open in the wind. Nobody believed it could be an accident, and Sarge loved it because that guy was such a pompous ass.

164 SteveMcGaziBolaGate  Dec 16, 2014 12:00:23am

OK, since you asked, the other guy was a turret gunner in a TBM Avenger. He remebered Bush as just a rich kid from New England. He also said the only thing worse than combat was taking off and landing on a jeep carrier. It wasn’t like one of those giant 700 foot Essex carriers, oh no! You had to get catapulted off the flight deck, and you were helpless on approach. All you could do was pray your pilot knew what he was doing. As far as cpmbat, he hardly ever brought any ammo home, but he doesn’t think he ever hit anything. As soon as you would hit the trigger, the entire plane would shake so bad you could barely even see your target. (My hunch is the plane didn’t shake so much as the turret did.) Another guy was a submariner who grew up in MN where you could walk across the Mississippi. But the coldest winter he ever spent was at a sub training base in WI. I guess you put a sub in the freezing water with no insulation, and you can work out the math. Anyway, once they were taking provisions and fish from a tender, he was pulled off his sub and put in another. The first sub never came back.

Another Lizard asked a little while ago whether the EU would have a plan to deal with the fallout associated with economic collapse in Russia. It seemed rhetorical at the time but I’m totally ignorant of how this might play out.
Even if it results in Putin being cast into the dosshouse, with the economy so dependent on oil, how might the Russian state recoup its losses?
And given its political atmosphere, would a Putin replacement be any better? Is there a viable challenger?
Are my questions still premature?

Putin is suffering no loss of popularity for his policies and the economic fallout resulting from them. He can still successfully blame it on the West and not on the inherent weakness of an economy so heavily dependent on one product.

And unfortunately, the best way to cover his tracks and maintain his popularity is to be even more belligerent towards his neighbors.

Definitely. China faced the same situation as Russia, and made it almost impossible to buy Bitcoin with a Chinese bank account or PayPal-like service. Both countries impose currency controls, while private citizens see more value in holding exchangeable currencies like pounds, euros or dollars. There are limits, for example, on how much Chinese renminbi you can exchange for dollars at an exchange counter, and the government requires your ID for every exchange. Bitcoin presents none of those restrictions.

Once again, terrorists have struck at among the most defenseless of targets - kids in school. A Peshawar school was targeted by what appears to be a group of six Taliban terrorists. They’ve killed at least 126, and injuring nearly as many. Those figures are likely to rise as security forces sweep the buildings for further victims and terrorists. The terrorists also apparently wore suicide bomb vests and IEDs were also found on the grounds making the securing of the school all the more difficult.

It’s yet another signal that terrorists who are killing in the name of Islam are targeting Muslims who the groups don’t consider sufficiently Muslim. Either submit to their brand of Islam or suffer the consequences. Muslims who would rather go about daily business without fear that they or their kids will be slaughtered are the ones who are the victims here. Again. As it has been for most of the past decade. Islamic terrorists have been quite successful at killing fellow Muslims.

For Pakistan it’s still all about the frontier provinces and their autonomous relationship with Islamabad - the ISI and how it still looks the other way with certain groups, and that the Taliban simply sweep across a border with Afghanistan to their safe havens on either side of the border.

At the same time, a loon wolf terrorist killed two people in a Sydney standoff that wasn’t ever likely going to end in any other way than a hail of gunfire. That’s made more headlines than the Peshawar school massacre, even though the size and scope of the Peshawar attack is much more like Beslan. It’s like taking 5 Sandy Hook massacres and lumping them together in the span of a few hours.

Now, the Pakistani government response will likely be some reprisal raids into the frontier provinces, and/or rounding up the usual suspects in Peshawar or Islamabad, but a sustained campaign to root out the Taliban wont be forthcoming. Which means Pakistanis will be dealing with the specter of another such attack soon enough.

To a degree Pakistan is reaping what they sowed by supporting the extremists in the first place. That they would eventually turn on the Pakistani government as not being extreme enough itself was predictable.

That it ends up being taken out on the innocent, especially children, is doubly deplorable. Education is the key to making things better, and I think the Taliban knows that.

Police unions hate that people are questioning their authority to kill with impunity. These bastions of police culture demand apologies for t-shirts that proclaim that they stand united with those who were victims of excessive force, police brutality, or officer-involved shootings.

What the unions don’t want people to notice is that their own members’ t-shirts are far more worrisome and dangerous because the mindset that they’re all Judge Dredd is pervasive.

I get that police have a dangerous job and there’s a bit of gallows humor, but these types of statements (including those by the NYPD Midtown South captain quoting Col. Jessup’s speech in A Few Good Men as motivation) shows a complete disdain for the public that these people are sworn to protect.

There are no easy fixes, because it also involves repairing the damage done by politicians who pander to the police unions for votes and claiming to be tough on crime is a surefire winner with voters, even though crime rates are at historical lows in many parts of the country. The perception that we are unsafe is the bigger concern (so we must send Bearcats and MRAPs to tiny towns to protect their citizens from terror attacks - or guns with lots of guns, rather than addressing the underlying problem of people having too easy access to firearms and that they fall into the wrong hands. Or even worse, that the politicians write laws that enable bad behavior to abound - whether it’s the SYG or essentially giving law enforcement carte blanche to kill without fear of prosecution.

So, the President doesn’t mention the Taliban, all while condemning a terror attack. This is what the right wing considers valid criticism? Hours after the attack when not all facts are in, they’re complaining that we haven’t named the group responsible.

It’s bizarro world in the right wing, when they were busy complaining that the Administration made statements re: Benghazi that were only later confirmed to be accurate (like the video being implicated in spurring the terrorists to act). So, in acting cautious, the right wing attacks because they haven’t identified the group.

The Taliban isn’t monolithic. There’s multiple factions, and there are some real bad groups among them.

There’s the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, which isn’t affiliated with the Mullah Omar Taliban in Afghanistan. And Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan has splintered into multiple factions after Baitullah Mehsud was killed in a drone strike a few years back, and one faction is still associated with the Mehsud clan though the current leader isn’t a Mehsud. There’s the Haqqani network. There’s Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, which has ties with the Taliban.

And the list is always mutating and changing.

Browns’ Andrew Hawkins explains why he wore a ‘Justice for Tamir Rice and John Crawford’ T-shirt at

Boom.

“I was taught that justice is a right that every American should have. Also justice should be the goal of every American. I think that’s what makes this country. To me, justice means the innocent should be found innocent. It means that those who do wrong should get their due punishment. Ultimately, it means fair treatment. So a call for justice shouldn’t offend or disrespect anybody. A call for justice shouldn’t warrant an apology.

“To clarify, I utterly respect and appreciate every police officer that protects and serves all of us with honesty, integrity and the right way. And I don’t think those kind of officers should be offended by what I did. My mom taught me my entire life to respect law enforcement. I have family, close friends that are incredible police officers and I tell them all the time how they are much braver than me for it. So my wearing a T-shirt wasn’t a stance against every police officer or every police department. My wearing the T-shirt was a stance against wrong individuals doing the wrong thing for the wrong reasons to innocent people.
I’m not an activist, in any way, shape or form. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred I keep my opinions to myself on most matters. I worked extremely hard to build and keep my reputation especially here in Ohio, and by most accounts I’ve done a solid job of decently building a good name. Before I made the decision to wear the T-shirt, I understood I was putting that reputation in jeopardy to some of those people who wouldn’t necessarily agree with my perspective. I understood there was going to be backlash, and that scared me, honestly. But deep down I felt like it was the right thing to do. If I was to run away from what I felt in my soul was the right thing to do, that would make me a coward, and I can’t live with that. God wouldn’t be able to put me where I am today, as far as I’ve come in life, if I was a coward.

“As you well know, and it’s well documented, I have a 2-year-old little boy. The same 2-year-old little boy that everyone said was cute when I jokingly threw him out of the house earlier this year. That little boy is my entire world. And the No. 1 reason for me wearing the T-shirt was the thought of what happened to Tamir Rice happening to my little Austin scares the living hell out of me. And my heart was broken for the parents of Tamir and John Crawford knowing they had to live that nightmare of a reality.

Ferguson grand jury witness has shockingly serious credibility issues
Monday morning, The Smoking Gun released a damning exposé on Sandra McElroy, the woman previously known only as Witness 40 in the Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson’s grand jury hearing. Her testimony-which conflicted with other witness accounts of Michael Brown having held his hands up in the air at the time of the shooting-perfectly corroborated Wilson’s account of the incident, and had been held up by Fox News personality Sean Hannity as evidence of Wilson’s innocence. In fact, it is very likely that her testimony was a major factor in Wilson not being indicted.

There had already been some questions as to McElroy’s reliability during the trial, due to some extremely racist statements on social media, in her journal and elsewhere, the fact that she was not on medication for her bipolar disorder, and the fact that she admitted to having had a serious head injury in a car accident which made her memory a little fuzzy.

McElroy testified that she saw, with her own eyes, Michael Brown charging into Darren Wilson. Which, let’s just say it, is an absurd thing that no one would do. She was also notable for her weird journal entry about how she was learning to not refer to black people as “n****ers” but as “people.”

However, it turns out she was almost definitely lying. In fact, there is almost no chance that she witnessed the encounter at all.

The GOP hasn’t bothered to hide any of the things that you mentioned for some time yet they now have the majority in both houses of Congress. Republican governors who fucked over their states were handily re-elected. When Democratic voters haven’t figured things out sufficiently to show up at the polls in a crucial mid-term I see little hope for voters in general to do so.

As a result, US dollar exchange rate broke the historical record, becoming higher than 80 rubles, and the European currency for the first time exceeded $ 100. By 18:37 Moscow time the dollar fell from a peak day to 72.2 ruble, the euro fell to 90.7 rubles. My family who lived in San Francisco never had a car. They were able to get everywhere they needed to with mass transit. In order to get a bus from my house, I’d have to walk 3 miles and then it would take me forever to get wherever I wanted to go.

The worst part of Mass Transit is grocery shopping, IMHO.

Much the same for the village I live in along the Rhine, I would be really lost without a car. Things would look different if I moved into Frankfurt, where my girlfriend lives 250 yards from the nearest subway station.

That sucks.

I have to say that Ostrava has a very well-integrated public transit system, and several of the lines run 24 hours a day, including public holidays. There was a recent expansion so now I can get from part of town to South Ostrava via tram - previously, it required two bus transfers and a hop on a tram to get to South Ostrava…..now it’s a straight shot. I’m not too sure who’s running DPO (Ostrava Transit Authority) but I will say they’re doing a hell of a good job.

I do as well, including a brand-new grocery store that opened two months ago - a rebuild of a ratty old Communist-era shopping center that had fallen into disrepair. I have three grocery stores within a maximum 10-minute walk, and three convenience stores very close by - including one on the ground floor of my apartment building.

You can get by in the major cities in the US with good transit, or simply having most amenities withing walking or short bus ride distance. And some of these cities are also getting more bicycle friendly as well. (Though I still think there is a serious shortage of bicycle parking/locking space.)

I have mainly kept my car due to weekly trips that would be annoying via mass transit, and also the periodic visits to my brother who resides about 300 miles away.

If I didn’t go play cribbage on Monday nights I would probably consider something like Zip Car. Adjust weekend runs to every other week, and a rental would work for the longer trips. Would have to keep insurance of course*, but would save some cash currently spent on parking space.

* - A little cheaper since I think it would mainly be liability and not that much on the vehicle itself. Flip side is not having a vehicle (Forester) with known cargo capacity on-hand and pre-loaded with some convenient items like a bike rack.

But I think that’s explained by my points b) and c) - a lot of people either don’t realize that they’re in the 90% getting screwed, or are simply keen to see the brown people get screwed harder.

I consider it a blessing to have a Trader Joe’s about 5 blocks away. Walking distance with two loaded canvas grocery bags. I do bulkier purchases on weekends using the car and visiting a Wegman’s out in the Philly suburbs.

There is a Whole Foods in the area as well, but I’ve never been in there since I have no intention of giving them any of my business.

Also a 7-11 on my block and a another deli/grocery a few blocks away if I need something quickly. It strikes me that 7-11s now stock a lot less variety of items than they used to, or at least it appears that way to me.

Stone’s former wife, 33-year-old Nicole Stone, was found dead in her apartment after a neighbor saw Stone fleeing just before 5 a.m. with their two young daughters, authorities said.

Police then discovered five more people killed in two other houses: Nicole Stone’s mother, grandmother, sister, brother-in-law and 14-year-old niece. A 17-year-old nephew was wounded in the head and left clinging to life.

The daughters were later were found safe with Stone’s neighbors.

What will happen with Jeb will be the same thing that happened with McCain and Romney. Bush will end up repudiating a lot of his past stances to appear more right wing to win the nomination and then try to move desperately to the center in the GE while at the same time moving to the right by picking a right wing favorite for his VP. Honestly, it’s a tough road for any Republican candidate. Jeb’s own brother only won the EC by one state in both his election and I’m not even going to bore us all by bringing up the Florida controversy from 14 years ago.

re: #358 Franklin

I don’t think there was collusion, but a willful disregard for way grand juries are typically run. They included a witness of a dubious background in support of Wilson’s version, even though if your job is to secure an indictment, you’d put on only those witnesses who corroborate a version of events that indicate a crime occurred.

There’s a case for perjury against the witness for lying and obstructing justice.

Now, if the prosecutor knew that this witness was unreliable and wasn’t there and that they were going to commit perjury, then we’ve got a completely different ballgame regarding his actions. No evidence of that so far, but the more we learn about witness 40, and how the prosecutor made her testimony central to disputing that Brown had his hands up, the more it makes McCullough’s office look complicit.

Given what we know of this witness so far, it’s likely the defense would never put this person on the stand because the cross would be so damaging that it would show just how desperate Wilson was that they had to invent details to claim justification.

Jeb is smart enough to know that he will lose some primaries to the nutters. He’s also smart enough to know that those who vote for the nutters are so invested in their favorite nutter that they will vote for that person alone in a primary - no matter what. It’s possible that no single nominee will arrive at the convention with sufficient delegates to win the nomination on the first ballot. If that happens then Jeb, if he runs, could take the prize.

I’m interested in seeing who Jeb surrounds himself with. For example, I knew Mitt was going to pander to the far right when he brought Bolton on board as his FP adviser and Kobach as his immigration adviser. And I agree that the name is a big part of the candidate. The candidates who have ties to past candidates directly through marriage or direct kinship in the case of Clinton or Bush have tried to use their names to get themselves advanced in the past. It’s only fair play for their detractors to point out that we’re tired of them. Honestly, I really do feel that Hillary Clinton’s time has come and gone. A little late, but….

I am in TOTAL agreement about the wonders of Richard Thompson’s playing. I’ve been fortunate enough to have seen him solo more than a dozen times, and with his bands on three occasions. As a solo performer, there are few who can come close (Bruce CocKburn is his equal, IMO); with a band, that incredible electric playing is utterly astonishing. The last two times I saw the band (at the Warfield in SF), it included Dave Mattacks, Pete Zorn and Danny Thompson. THe show opened with RT solo, then in duet with DT. Golden memories, those.

(My first RT show was in Berlin in ‘84 at the Metropol. He was part of what was billed as “The New Acoustic Guitar Trio”, with Steve Morse of the Dixie Dregs and Deep Purple and none other than Mr. Dave (Lindley). Odd pairing that worked well.)

And coming full circle within the thread….the relevance of Jackson Browne’s lyrics is sadly timeless. Here’s one of his deepest, performed by the extraordinary Richie Haves (RIP). “Lives in the Balance”, from a Mountain Stage performance:

Lives In The Balance

This completes the evisceration of GS and it’s dispiriting that the bills that did it will both have been signed into law by Democratic presidents.

Gotcha. Thank you. I mean I hope I am not sounding like a purist but that is something that bothers me. I know the Dems can’t and won’t be LoC on every issue but a lot of people understandably blame the fall out from that got the Financial Crisis.

She needs to take stronger stances I think to get people genuinely excited about her. I mean right now I see people excited for her but I think many of them just see a name. I don’t know if any of the liberal stalwarts are the answer but to the credit of people like Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, at least they’re standing for something. I have no issue with voting for Clinton but if you want to get people excited for you, please stand for something.

Paradoxically, that’s one thing that the lefties and righty types can agree on. They want their nominees to stand for something. And it’s annoying really because the so called centrists. Not saying real centrists don’t exist mind you but some of these types see the disliking of Clinton and Bush by liberals/conservatives as some sort of proof that they must be alright because “Hey the TP/Left despise them.” To me personally, I find someone like Jeb a lot more annoying than Ted Cruz because Jeb as Mitt and McCain in the past demonstrated, they will say anything to any audience.

I know what you are saying, but sadly taking a stand too early can lead to many problems with the media (FOX, MSNBC) and those other candidates you may be facing.

It really seems the best way to run any more is to be sort of neutral and speak in generalities at least through the primaries. It is about what you stand against more then stand for.

I for once would like to see a true firebrand type of candidate. This country could use a good political kick in the ass.

WOAH.

Is Vlad & the Kremlin Crew losing the final bearing to reality?

I mean, any use of nukes other than a retaliation in kind for a use of N/B/C weapons on you will sink its vicious fangs into you pretty quickly, it may be a military success, but it will most decidedly be an epic flop in terms of PR.

Basically, look at the prevalence of various camera technology, especially in cellphones, today as opposed to back in 1945.

There would most likely be multiple camera angles of the blast itself and its immediate effects, as well as horrific blast and burn injuries. Not to mention hours upon hours of acute radiation syndrome victims.

All in glorious 24-bit color HD. Remember the “Sarah’s nightmare” scene in Terminator 2? Now realize that sequence is both short and sanitized. Yes. SANITIZED.

Basically, if the Kremlin takes Dugin seriously, they will all too late discover that the only thing they managed was to kick a grizzly squarely in the balls.

Cue one of the signals I don’t want to hear over the air raid siren system here in Sweden:

Youtube Video

I know that I can make it to shrapnel shelter in about 90 seconds after hearing that signal, but many won’t be able to.

Short bursts clearly originating from the siren system as opposed to a building or open mining site (where it is used for warning before a blast) is the attack signal in Sweden and Norway.

A 30s tone / 15 s silence cadence is the mobilization signal in Sweden.

A 7 s tone / 14 s silence cadence is the general alert signal in Sweden, which means that you are to close doors and windows, shut down ventilation and listen to the P4 radio network. It is tested at 15:00 CET the first Monday of March, June, September and December.

A 30 to 40 s single tone is the all clear.

462 lawhawk  Dec 16, 2014 10:26:23am

The terrorists who carried out the Peshawar attacks did so with vile and horrendous motivations. Drive fear into Pakistanis who continue to support the government and their ongoing crackdown (Pakistan always seems to have spurts where the government cracks down on any number of Taliban militias, then ignores the problem entirely) and hope that the government wont come after them.

Killing more than 100 kids in a mass casualty terror attack isn’t likely to result in inaction by the Sharif government. They’re going to have to respond but I doubt that they’ve got the resolve to actually take the steps necessary to finally pacify the frontier provinces/FATA/Waziristans (which were established precisely because those regions were so difficult to control in the first place).

In other words, it appears to be the death throes of a terror group that needs to gain notoriety by killing as many people as possible so that they can replenish their ranks before they are themselves wiped out. Yet, the very acts they carried out will likely hasten their demise.

Note too that the kids being targeted are the kids of those in the military. They’re going after the families of those soldiers the Taliban are facing:

The Taliban has claimed that the siege on the Army Public School in Peshawar, one of nearly 150 schools across the country run by the military, was “revenge” for the Pakistani army’s ongoing operation in North Waziristan, a hotbed of terrorist activity for years. Pakistan officials said the attack, which killed more than 140, appeared to be aimed at the children of senior military personnel who attend the school.

“The Taliban could have attacked any one of the thousands of schools across the country,” said retired Maj. Gen. Mahmud Ali Durrani. “They deliberately went after the children of the soldiers they’re fighting.”

A Norton Featherbed frame with the engine from an HRD Vincent shoehorned into it. The most sought after engine was the 998cc OHV v-twin from the Vincent Black Shadow. With its 7.3:1 compression ratio, twin Amal carbs, and polished engine internals, it produced 54 HP @ 5700 RPM.

Twin leading shoe front drum brakes slowed the hybrid from its 125mph top speed.

Putin is destroying Russia’s economy and government budget in order to maybe adversely affect US fracking which makes up less than 1% of US GDP. Ok.

The logic of this comment escapes me. That OPEC won’t reduce output is hardly the fault of Putin.

Speeding will get a cop to pull a gun on you, even if you’re rushing home to your pregnant wife who has had numerous complications and had just called to say she was going into labor.

There’s no word on why the cop pulled the gun in the first place, but the police department claims that the officer acted professionally.

The man claims he repeatedly told the cop that he was rushing to get to his pregnant wife so that they could go to the hospital.

In other words a deliberate escalation. By killing the children of soldiers they in essence *want* to trigger reprisals by the soldiers in turn. In hope that that will help generate local support and help further fanatic-ize their base.

He added that all of his allegations had been reviewed before publication by his mentor, Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz, for whom he had worked as a researcher when he was in high school. Asked about Johnson, Dershowitz responded in an email, “We disagree about many issues but I admire his principled opposition to all things politically correct and his determination to be heard and to make a difference.”

Cleveland’s police force is really pissing me off. They have had issues for years and it seems that they are now worse than they have been.

Bunker mentality seems to be the new rage for cops. Us versus them seems to be their thinking and with that it will all get worse. Add pissed off to bad attitude and this whole country is going to be facing these problems.

I have a feeling this summer is going to be hell on the streets of America. And it is not the criminals we will be fearing. Joe Super Cop is out to prove who is really in charge.

Bradley Stone, the man prosecutors say is responsible for gunning down his ex-wife and six of her family members before going on the run, has been found dead in the woods near his home, sources tell NBC10.

His body was discovered near W. 4th Street and Schoolhouse Road in Pennsburg. Sources said it appears Stone shot himself.

532 Dr Lizardo  Dec 16, 2014 11:13:23am

Meanwhile, in Russia, the collapsing ruble has prompted something of a shopping spree:

Russians hurried to change their savings and pensions into dollars and euros while also stocking up on furniture and jewellery as the rouble’s collapse accelerated.

Their mounting concern was reflected on Tuesday morning in the red lights of the currency exchange booths that dot the city, which were ticking over to show ever weaker rouble rates.

A queue of about a dozen people formed at a branch of Sberbank, the country’s largest bank, opposite Kursky station in central Moscow. “I took out some of my pension and I want to change it into dollars,” said Galina, a retiree, who declined to give her surname. “None of us know what’s happening. We’re all worried that the currency will keep falling.”

But it’s not all fun and games:

Muscovites were divided in their views on who was to blame for the currency’s collapse, but there were signs that some were becoming more disillusioned with the authorities.

“Are sanctions responsible for the banks speculating? I don’t think so. It’s a distraction. They are saying look, look over there at Ukraine. And while we’re looking over there at Ukraine, they [the government] is reaching into our pockets,” said Konstantin Shulik, a Moscow consultant, who complained that his dollar-denominated mortgage had become 50 per cent more expensive in rouble terms thanks to the currency collapse.

“I can’t go on vacation and I’m going to have to scale back on the new year’s presents I buy. And my grocery bill has gone up 15 per cent because of inflation.”

If the ruble keeps sinking, Mr. Shulik’s gonna be in a world of hurt with a dollar-denominated mortgage.

Ouch.

If the media doesn’t report it far & wide, then we’ll assume everyone who shares his race/religion/whatever are in favor of these types of crimes. //
