Chuck C. Johnson Wrong Again: FBI Conclusively Links N. Korea to Sony Hack

Self-beclowned yet again
Wingnuts • Views: 34,095

All week long, right wing smear merchant Chuck C. Johnson has been ranting on Twitter about his goofy theory that North Korea had nothing to do with the Sony hack, claiming to have proof from “Sony insiders,” and demanding apologies from anyone who dared to suggest otherwise. A small sample of his dozens of boasting tweets:

Et cetera, et cetera.

If you’ve been following the sad saga of the Ginger Avenger and his long-running habit of shooting himself in the foot, you probably already know where this is headed.

Yes, that’s right — the FBI announced today that they have conclusively linked North Korea to the Sony cyber-attack.

Some of the evidence they cite in their statement:

Technical analysis of the data deletion malware used in this attack revealed links to other malware that the FBI knows North Korean actors previously developed. For example, there were similarities in specific lines of code, encryption algorithms, data deletion methods, and compromised networks.

The FBI also observed significant overlap between the infrastructure used in this attack and other malicious cyber activity the U.S. Government has previously linked directly to North Korea. For example, the FBI discovered that several Internet protocol (IP) addresses associated with known North Korean infrastructure communicated with IP addresses that were hardcoded into the data deletion malware used in this attack.

Separately, the tools used in the SPE attack have similarities to a cyber attack in March of last year against South Korean banks and media outlets, which was carried out by North Korea.

Hmmm. Who do we believe? The FBI’s investigators, or Chuck C. Johnson’s “anonymous sources?” It’s a real quandary.

We notice, however, that for every single recent breaking story, Chuck has claimed to have anonymous sources right in the middle of it. A cynical person might begin to suspect he’s just inventing these “sources” to inject himself into the news.

Chuckle’s “sources” (LOLOL) clearly reside in his imagination.

Or….his ass. Take your pick.

Obviously the FBI is in on the cover-up. Sony must have really wanted to make this movie disappear to involve the Feds.

Seriously, once you accept this basic premise, it explains a lot. Like why he can’t admit he was wrong about Menendez, maybe he’s afraid of his Cuban handlers? How else does one explain running interference and disinformation for the Norks?

I’m just asking questions here.

Financial Stability Oversight Council Announces Nonbank Financial Company Designation

“After a year and a half of extensive and in-depth analysis - including significant engagement with the company - the Council has determined that material financial distress at MetLife could pose a threat to U.S. financial stability,” said Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew, Chairperson of the Council. “Designation of a nonbank financial company is a critical tool for the Council to address potential threats to U.S. financial stability. Consistent with its mandate, the Council remains focused on protecting the broader economy from the types of risk that contributed to the financial crisis.”

Not even 100% positive I’m joking anymore. Someone like CCJ, with his combination of narcissism and zero personal integrity, would be the perfect mark for this kind of thing. He wouldn’t even necessarily know he’s being used, and in the Menendez case psychologically rebels against the idea he had been no matter how much evidence piles up.

In the Booker case CCJ refused to disclose the fact that he’d been paid by a political PAC to come up with dirt.

WASHINGTON — The writer who published an explosive story claiming that Sen. Cory Booker does not live in Newark worked for a PAC that spent nearly $200,000 against Booker in the New Jersey Senate race, BuzzFeed has learned.
Charles C. Johnson, a freelance libertarian journalist, conducted opposition research on Booker for a PAC called American Commitment earlier this year. He also wrote reported pieces about the New Jersey Senate race for the Daily Caller in 2013.

“Charles is a research guy that we’ve hired to do research for us,” said Phil Kerpen, president of American Commitment. “He’s terrific at it.”
“We’ve never paid anyone to write a story per se,” Kerpen said. “Charles has done research for us; he did some of the background work on some of the Booker stuff.”

Kerpen shows up frequently in CCJ’s twitter feed, and is a massively corrupt professional astroturfer. So the idea that CCJ is being paid and used by foreign governments to effect their espionage / disinformation campaigns no longer seems that far fetched, does it?

Sony Pictures Entertainment is a wholly owned US subsidiary of Sony of Japan. Sony Entertainment. It had bought Columbia Pictures (from Coca Cola of all companies) and numerous other studios over the years. Columbia remains itself a subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Likewise, Sony Music acquired CBS Records and then had a merger with Bertselmann BMG, forming Sony BMG.

re: #97 Justanotherhuman

I watched “Wolf of Wall St” last night. About all I can say is that I did chuckle a few times, and Leo DiCaprio certainly has the asshole character down pat.

Not one character seemed to have much in the “redeeming quality” category.

I watched it last week, and am still wondering why they thought they needed three hours to tell a story that could have been adequately done in 90 minutes. They didn’t really use the time for character development, or to show what happened to the people he screwed over. It was like the same scene repeated over and over and over.

Christmas has gone more cattywhampus than usual. The 4-year old is going to have his tonsils out on Monday. Mrs Deb and I will be in Birmingham babysitting for three weeks until he can go back to daycare.

We usually do the presents and dinner a week early, so the kids can do the ‘real’ holiday with their in-laws, but this is even more improvisation. Right now 4 families are on the road here.

It’s not Christmas until someone is on a blow-up bed.

Jonah’s character kind of reminded me of Tommy. Gets me on another thought though. I imagine they named the character Tommy DeVito after Joe’s real life pal and former Four Season member of the same name. You know what’s another underrated Scorsese flick though. The King of Comedy. There’s no killing and not a single Rolling Stones song but DeNiro as Rupert Pumkin is great. And as a fight fan, I love Raging Bull too.

Sony Hit With Fourth Class-Action Lawsuit Over Stolen Data (Exclusive)

hollywoodreporter.com

“Their complaint cites a CIO magazine interview with Sony svp of information security Jason Spaltro in 2007 in which Spaltro, then Sony’s executive director of information security, argued against investing fully in information security. “For decades, Defendant failed, and continues to fail, to take the reasonably necessary actions to provide a sufficient level of IT security to reasonably secure its employees’ PII,” the complaint reads.

“The plaintiffs refer to the April 2011 hack in which 77 million users’ data was stolen from Sony’s PlayStation Network, which forced Sony to temporarily shut down the network, citing the hack as further indication that Sony’s information security is deficient. Then the lawsuit brings up details revealed in emails leaked in the recent hack itself — specifically, insufficiently encrypted files, a Sept. 25 audit that found vulnerabilities in Sony IT, passwords stored in a file labeled “PASSWORD” and a breach of some of Sony’s Brazilian files in February that the company never disclosed.

“The lawsuit, filed by attorneys Michael Sobol and RoseMarie Maliekel of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, addresses the recent reports that the North Korean government was behind the hack. “Defendant engages in the entertainment industry as part of a vast multinational corporate conglomerate [and] knows or should know that it may be the target of the world’s most sophisticated data hackers or cybercriminals,” the complaint reads. Sony’s duty to protect its employees’ information is the same “regardless of the identity of the hackers or cybercriminals, even if, as some recent press reports indicate, they act at the direction of a foreign government.” More

oooops

If I were a retailer I would not want the responsibility of storing someone else’s CC information, that is just asking for trouble.

cnbc.com.

I don’t understand why they have to store the info on credit cards.

3 years ago the commercial system we used to drive our web stores did not store credit card data. We would have the number for process only. Once the transaction was routed through authorize.net it was a done deal and the credit card info was replaced by a transaction number to allow Authorize to know what credit card bank and customer did the transaction in case there were questions or if there needed to be a charge change or credit to the account for a return, etc.

I can see stores going to some kind of system like that. If everyone uses the info to get the transaction credited to their bank account and it carries some kind of banking ID#, then only the banks will need to protect the actual CC info.

There is going to be money made on the whole thing, as computer security specialists are probably real busy figuring out all kinds of ways to protect info. Business will be good after the last couple years and now with North Korea.

Of course, if there is key logging capturing going on a person’s own computer that is another thing.

Mr. klys and I head out tonight for the Bracebridge Dinner tomorrow. I would promise photos but it is a no camera event and really, I want to enjoy the moments too. :) I hope everyone here has a fantastic weekend and I’ll see what photos get taken in the valley.

Dr. Marty Fox should actually read the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA). An event must be certified as an act of terrorism by the Secretary of Treasury in concurrence with the Secretary of State and the Attorney General before TRIA kicks in. You don’t just say that you’re a victim of terrorism and then collect.

It’s only a matter of time until the fundies try the send-an-email-stop-a-movie gambit. I can see it now:

“Stop showing that smut or we will blow your movie house and every one in it.”

Fundies don’t have for-real commandos, much less nuclear weapons and missiles. Nor do they have a rank-and-file that salutes every last crazy notion the leader might come up with, on pain of death. Nor does that rank and file, whose actual support is necessary to the elites, countenance wanton murder of innocents to make a point about how sin should not be tolerated. Can anyone show them where, in the Bible or in the writings of the saints, it says such killings are OK? Of course not.

Gas prices at Lukoil and Wawa (the biggest convenience store chain in the Philly area) are usually among the highest in the area, but even they’ve been forced to compete. I paid $2.37 per gallon this morning at the Lukoil by me, which sits on the entrance ramp to the highway. I’d be willing to bet that the Costco we shop at has gas at $2.25 to $2.30 right now.

It. Is. Done.

My last day at the training center. 16 years, and it was hard to end that last class. I made sure that I rode the bus today, so that I couldn’t allow myself to hang around afterwards.

We had the company Christmas Dinner last night, Stoney River Steakhouse. Made my goodbyes and hugs there.

Now for a sabbatical (because that sounds better than “Sitting on my butt watching Discovery Channel), and then figure out what new path I should take my life down.

Perhaps I’ll change my name…. Pursue my fortune as “Estaban, The Cabana Boy”. (or, perhaps not)

To keep from going crazy, since I was alone in the car, I worked on converting the gas I was buying in Liters, paid for with Loonies, along with the distance in Km, into Miles per Gallon and Miles per Dollar.

There’s a lot of skepticism among the tech bros because it is difficult to make a conclusive statement from digital evidence left behind by a competent hacker. The “insider” allegations almost certainly derive from the fact that an “Advanced Persistent Threat” got on to the Sony network months ago, at least. This could have happened by any number of means, and the fact that it stayed hidden is evidence that hackers know what they’re doing. They managed to collect 17 terabytes of tons of data.

But the tech security types— usually big Snowden fans— can’t seem to admit that the intelligence agencies might have some evidence beyond the strictly forensic study of code. That they may be tracking a number of people, and the activities of the very small number of IP addresses in North Korea. That the activities of the “G.O.P.” hacker gang might interesect in many ways, including in the real world, with North Korea. In fact, I think the most likely explanation is that North Korea is using a “cutout.” Even if we catch the participants, and they confess getting orders from the Un Gang, the tech people will say, “but you can spoof IP addresses” and think they’ve done their job. A police investigation doesn’t just exist in the 2D world of code; it requires communications, drops, and all the spy tech.

What would the motivation for this be in the real world? Money? Not going to happen. They are causing hundreds of millions of dollars damage, and there have been ransom demands for the data. Sony won’t pay, because there’s no telling how many copies are loose now.

Lolz? No, this is just too massive, long-term, and brazen. Almost like they’re not afraid of being caught, because the FBI isn’t going to arrest somebody in Pyongyang.

I remember the talks at Panmunjom, where the Grandfather of this dude played head games at negotiations for a year. They loved to have you make a deal, and then erase it, walk out on the meetings, and launch some shells at UN positions.

Eisenhower made a visit when he was elected, and the deal came shortly. Don’t know why, but my guess is the famous general said something about getting the peace deal or having nukes landin on Pyongyang.
