Rudy Giuliani on Brooklyn Police Shootings: It’s Obama’s Fault

What the hell is he talking about?
Politics • Views: 35,864

How can you tell Rudy Giuliani is considering another run at the Presidency? When he starts saying really stupid things to appeal to the knuckle-dragging Tea Party base: Obama’s ‘Propaganda’ Pushed People to ‘Hate the Police,’ Giuliani Says.

President Obama has engaged in “propaganda” encouraging people to “hate the police,” former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) charged a day after two city police officers were shot and killed in their patrol car by a man who posted anti-police messages to his social media account.

“We’ve had four months of propaganda starting with the president that everybody should hate the police,” Giuliani said during an appearance on Fox News early Sunday. “The protests are being embraced, the protests are being encouraged. The protests, even the ones that don’t lead to violence, a lot of them lead to violence, all of them lead to a conclusion: The police are bad, the police are racist. That is completely wrong.”

You know, I really don’t remember President Obama ever saying “we should hate the police.” In fact, I don’t remember him saying anything even remotely like that. Maybe this is one of those events that only happened in the bizarre Wingnut Alternate Universe?

In the real world, though, President Obama unconditionally condemned the NYPD killings. Of course.

But Fox News cheer-leading the Bundy ranch wackos as they aimed sniper riffles at federal agents had nothing to do with the Vegas cop shootings….because reasons.

Apparently anti-government rhetoric is in no way to blame for the various “sovereign citizens” and anti-government yahoos deciding to kill cops as part of their “revolution.” But some dumbasses chanting they want “dead cops” is enough to inspire a man to drive all the way up from Baltimore to shoot two random cops.

Now, we’ve got politicians angling to get police union support by calling for cop cars to be bullet proof. Or, that there’s a concerted effort to go and kill police by an anti-police movement, which is somehow tied to or integral with the protests arising out of the killing of Michael Brown and others during the past several months.

None of this is substantiated, or even true, but that wont stop Rudy from making bogus claims.

In the past year, we’ve seen anti-government white folks stand off against law enforcement at the Bundy Ranch in Nevada. Two of those who stood with Bundy’s right to not pay grazing fees for his livestock killed two Nevada law enforcement officers, draped their bodies with Gadsen flags, etc.

We’ve seen a white man assassinate a cop and spark a lengthy manhunt - only to be captured alive (Eric Frein). In the past week, a man who’s known to have mental issues and numerous run ins with police got into another scrape with police, and the man ended up throwing what appeared to be pipe bombs at responding police so as to escape. That man was later captured and the pipe bombs were inert. But the intent was there by all those people to kill cops.

And their actions somehow don’t inure on their wider communities - that they’re lone (or loon) wolfs who are mentally ill or don’t speak for all who share their common values.

Yet, when a black man with no apparent ties to gangs, the protest movement, etc., kills two NYPD officers after nearly killing his gf earlier in the same day, posts online that he was doing this as revenge for Brown and Garner, that somehow means that the President, the Mayor and the protest movement are responsible?

The President, Mayor, and leaders of the various protest movements around the nation seeking justice for those killed at the hands of police have roundly condemned the violence and want nothing to do with the violence.

But the police unions have an interest in spreading this nonsense - because it is as much about politics as it is about policing. The unions will be there long after DeBlasio or the President are in office, and they can cow the respective legislative processes into spending more and watering down plans to improve community policing and improved oversight that would reduce police brutality and excessive force.

How many times did Hannity run segments supporting the Bundy ranch clan? He was supporting an anti-government law breaker.

Yeah, but they’ve never actually renounced him or suggested that they were wrong to support him. They just moved on to the next “outrage,” which is why when the Millers killed two cops (and one dumbass) in Vegas, they could gloss over the story. I’m pretty sure that, if you asked Hannity today, he’d still say he supports Bundy.

I need to stop being surprised at the insane things that Republicans say and do every single day. It’s clear that no belief is too foolish and toxic for Republicans. They’re a menace, and seem to actually believe their hate-fueled propaganda.

In at least one of the cases, it wasn’t even an innocent suspect. It was a cop who shot and killed a guy simply walking down the stairs at the wrong time because he didn’t want to wait for the elevator - Akai Gurley.

In another, it was a 12-year old, Tamir Rice, who was playing with a toy gun, and cops gave him less than 2 seconds to live from the time they drove up to within a few feet of where he was standing by himself.

In another, it was a man who was in a Wal Mart in an open carry state holding an air gun, who was given seconds to live from the time cops showed up.

The tie that binds? The victims were all black. But race has nothing to do with it the racists will say. Except the facts and statistics don’t lie.

Remember, it’s “not about race” when a cop kills an unarmed man, except when it’s totally about race if they can claim that black people are more likely to commit crimes than whites. Rudy said so, so it must be true!

My brother-in-law just posted something on FB, “Officer Down”, which is otherwise good and uncontroversial, till it gets to:

There will be no cries for justice. There will be no riots in the streets. There will be no officers marching, screaming “no justice, no peace.” No citizens will scream that something must be done. No windows will be smashed, no cars burned, no stones thrown, no names called. Only someone crying themselves to sleep tonight will be the only sign that I was cared about.

He’ll get a big funeral, where police from all over come to pay their respects. He’ll be called a hero on every TV station, and eulogized on every nightly news program. The Mayor, maybe even the Governor will hail his bravery.

Nobody will dig into his social media pages, looking for evidence that he deserved it. Nobody will call him a thug. Nobody will dig into his family’s records to show they were bad parents. Nobody will defend his killer, let alone call him a hero.

Nobody will claim any politician expressing regret at his death is inciting violence. No prosecutor will spend days presenting a slanted case to a grand jury to keep his killer from trial. No news organization will give his killer a national stage to express his lack of remorse. Nobody will shed a tear for his killer if he goes to jail.

They also need non-wingnut friends to talk them down. People immerse themselves in that delusional subculture, then lack any input to correct their absurd beliefs, because they’re surrounded by people who are just as lost, and intentionally cut off input from anyone who still has a grip on reality,

I know, I know, new thread, but it doesn’t feel right stinking up the other thread with this.

I find this a little more understandable (that’s not approval: keep reading). Giuliani is a man who built his political career by being tough on crime in the 90s. He’s always going to be on the side of the cops, and he’s always going to take any slight towards the police personally and badly.

This is not an excuse. This is just a point of history. The best bit of irony is there is some indication that his success had nothing to do with his policy: rsc.org
(I linked to Chemistry World rather than Mother Jones, because it is not settled science, and they couch that nuance better; I still find the idea compelling, and I await the results of further research eagerly).
