Rolling Stone Asks Columbia Journalism School to Audit Their UVA Rape Story

Media • Views: 42,991

At the Washington Post, Erik Wemple reports that Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner is seeking the aid of Columbia Journalism School to do an independent audit of their botched story about rape at the University of Virginia: Rolling Stone Farms Out Review of U-Va. Rape Story to Columbia Journalism School.

Rolling Stone magazine has decided to enlist the Columbia Journalism School to audit its handling of a discredited Nov. 19 story about rape on the campus of the University of Virginia, according to a just-released statement from Editor and Publisher Jann S. Wenner, which reads as follows:

In RS 1223, Sabrina Rubin Erdely wrote about a brutal gang rape of a young woman named Jackie at a party in a University of Virginia frat house [“A Rape on Campus”]. Upon its publication, the article generated worldwide attention and praise for shining a light on the way the University of Virginia and many other colleges and universities across the nation have tried to sweep the issue of sexual assault on campus under the rug. Then, two weeks later, The Washington Post and other news outlets began to question Jackie’s account of the evening and the accuracy of Erdely’s reporting. Immediately, we posted a note on our website, disclosing the concerns. We have asked the Columbia Journalism School to conduct an independent review - headed by Dean Steve Coll and Dean of Academic Affairs Sheila Coronel - of the editorial process that led to the publication of this story. As soon as they are finished, we will publish their report.

I noticed our stalker pal Chuck C. Johnson tweeting about this:

OK. I don’t get it. Why is this supposed to be “pathetic?” It sounds like an excellent idea to have an independent review, and who better to do it than a renowned journalism academy? A teaching experience for all involved, if you will.

Seriously, why is this supposed to be a bad thing? It’s usually not difficult to see what wingnuts are getting at when they rant about something, but I’m drawing a blank on this one.

I think UpChuck’s “argument” is as follows:

Giving the review to Columbia is WRONG because Columbia is RUN BY EEEVVILL PROGRESSIVES!!1 [poops on floor]

UpChuck feels that the job belonged to him and his crack team rather than some old J school.

Anybody bother to tell Chuck that Columbia Journalism School isn’t located in Colombia?

4 lawhawk  Dec 22, 2014 5:37:52pm

Wait. I’ve got it. Because they give out the Pulitzer Prize. And he was hoping he’d be the one to get it because of doxxing some completely uninvolved woman after needlessly inserting himself into yet another story as an “expert” that is clueless about facts, law, or the issues involved.

Award-Winning Journalists don’t go to Journalism School where they have to learn about things like ethics and editors.

Maybe UpChuck thinks it’s pathetic because he’d never stoop to that, no matter how wrong he was. Same goes for his mentor, DimJim Hoft.

Do not try to understand the New Journalism.

Experience it. And then go with the impressions it leaves.

You know, this is just going to cause Chuck C to open up his own Charles C. Johnson School of New Journalism. And you can be sure he will do it better than any ol’ Columbia.

Just after he finishes taking down all current journalists and serves his two or three terms in Congress.

You little minds just don’t understand UpChuck. It’s pathetic because:
a real journalist would never publish information without careful verification;
a real journalist would never ask for advice or consult hacks like Columbia University; a real journalist would immediately admit to mistakes; a real journalist would be more interested in the facts and context than which victim can be doxxed for political or narcissistic reasons.

//

Which I guess is a concise way for UpChuck to admit he’s an unreal journalist.

Baltimore Fox affiliate apologizes for “misleading edit” of protest chant.

“Fox45 is apologizing for an error made on Fox45 News at Ten last night,” the statement said.

“We aired a clip from a protest in Washington, DC where we reported protesters were chanting ‘kill a cop’. We received a phone call from Tawanda Jones, who is in the video, who informed us that the chant was actually ‘We won’t stop….We can’t stop…. ‘til killer cops…. are in cell blocks’.

Here is the original Gawker coverage. Something pathetic about explaining away slanderous fraud as an “error” or “misleading edit”…but better than nothing.

Aussie Rules football takes endurance and the ability to play while bleeding. Nobody on those teams weighs much more than 200lbs.

I’ve seen this argument before. It’s sort of like arguing that marathon runners are better than sprinters. Just different requirements. American football players are conditioned to start two feet from a brick wall, reach full speed in one foot, and resist the urge to slow down, running full force into the wall.

*He refused to say Merry Christmas

American football is completely choreographed. The walls have been part of the evolution of the sport. The NFL used to be about agility. Now it’s about getting your big guys to dislodge the other big guys so a little guy can squeak through.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. If your morning ritual involves using a Keurig, take note. They’ve issued a recall on one of their models because of a burn hazard.

Keurig Green Mountain is recalling more than 6.6 million hot beverage-brewing machines in the United States that could overheat liquids and burn users.

Keurig says its Mini Plus Brewing Systems, with model number K10, can overheat and spray water during brewing. Keurig says it had received about 200 reports of hot liquid escaping from the brewer, including 90 reports of burn-related injuries.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission released details on the recall Tuesday. The recalled brewers have an identification number starting with “31” printed on the bottom. They were sold online and in stores in the U.S. and Canada between 2009 and 2014.

Consumers are being urged to call Keurig Green Mountain Inc. of Waterbury, Vermont, at [no phone numbers allowed] to arrange for free repair.

The New York Cop Killer Was Arrested 19 Times. Why Was He Able to Get a Gun

newrepublic.com: It’s likely that Brinsely’s gun came from outside the state, too. Though New York and Maryland require background checks on all gun sales, the black market in both is “fueled by weaker gun laws on secondary market sales in other states,” says Arkadi Gerney, a gun violence expert at the Center for American Progress. In such cases, a would-be shooter can buy weapons at gun shows or from private sellers, no questions asked. Such a sale could occur in front of a police officer, out of the trunk of a car, and the officer would have no grounds to interrupt. It should be harder.

And the more you try and point out ‘your worldview is almost completely the opposite of what’s actually happening in reality’, the more people double-down on their worldview and insist, no, it’s the FACTS that are wrong. It’s the Backfire Effect, and it’s what keeps me generally despondent about any kind of progress in this country. When lies are more seductive than truth, and the electorate seems to swallow up anything coming from the right wing while anything from the left is shown with indifference at best and venomous contempt at worst, I just really don’t know where we’ll go.

For all that the debunking means. We’ve seen the movie time and time again: outrageous claim taken on its face, front page news for 3 months. The debunkings and corrections of said outrageous claim, with only minimal research needed to put paid to them? Not even section A of the news paper, not even 5 minutes on cable news. Maybe a one-line correction on a future story.

There’s no actual consequence to bullshit these days, at worst it turns into ‘both sides same thing’. Meanwhile, folks like Obama and de Blasio can tell the truth about what a black man or the parent of a black child has to go through, and it becomes “THEY TOLD EVERYONE TO KILL COPS, LIBERAL RACIST PSYCHOPATHS, BURN THEM!!!” to what feels like the entire fucking country at this point.

Just….holy shit, the freakout is just so toxic and demoralizing, both in the craziness, and how widespread it exploded. Just…how do you move forward when more than half the country reacts like this and a good quarter of the country pulls the ‘both sides same thing’ bullshit?

Gotta keep fighting. Gotta keep with the facts and debunking BS. It’s the right thing to do.

It’s the only way to fight the injustices that the GOP and right wing are pulling with this crap - protecting bad cops from prosecution. Protecting a criminal justice system that is rife with injustices. Repairing the system - primarily because the outcomes are fixed if you’re a cop who kills someone on the job.

Even if they violation department rules and even common sense, they’re not indicted, let alone prosecuted for it because the prosecutors have no interest in putting cops on trial.

But that has to change. We have to hold law enforcement and the prosecutors to higher standards. When they do wrong, they have to be prosecuted and tried for their acts and omissions.

KS Governor Sam Brownback using ACA funds to help balance his tax-cut-riddled state budget

In an ironic twist, the vociferously anti-health reform governor is also relying on Obamacare to help fill the state’s budget gap; Brownback is transferring $55 million in revenue from a Medicaid drug rebate program expanded in the Affordable Care Act into the state’s general fund.

I honestly don’t know what these judges were thinking:

thinkprogress.org

Raul Rodriguez video recorded himself saying “I am standing my ground here” as he shot and killed his neighbor over loud music at a birthday party. At trial, he invoked Texas self-defense provisions to argue that he killed in self-defense and had no “duty to retreat.” A jury rejected this argument in 2012, convicting him of murder and sending him to prison for 40 years.
Last week, a Texas appeals court overturned Rodriguez’s conviction and granted him a new trial, finding that the instructions to the jury were too confusing and that the self-defense claim was the “focus of, indeed ‘the very basis of the case.’”

Oh, it’s Texas. Never mind.

Yes, after all, what do we know of Obama other than the identities of several generations of both his parents’ families, how his parents met, his birthday, the name of the hospital where he was born, the name of the doctor who delivered him, the location of every home where he has lived since birth, the name and location of every school he has ever attended, where he went to college, his major, where he went to law school, every job he has ever held, every elected position he has ever held, every vote he has taken as an elected official, his religion, his height, weight, eye color and his fucking blood type. Other than that, he’s a complete mystery.

There really is an utter lack of human decency at the core of the rightwing mindset. This goes back even before the official birth of the tea party. Excess tax? The combined tax burden on people is lower now than it has been in generations. But the right wing noise-machine has gone to 11TY claiming that we’re over-taxed. So, they’re pushing more tax cuts, and vital services are seeing a decline in real dollars. Investment in infrastructure is down, even though much of the infrastructure built in the 1950s is nearing the end of its design life (that’d be much of the Interstate highway system). Building new infrastructure for the 21st century is off the table in many parts of the country, and the cost to build new infrastructure in places like NYC is prohibitively expensive.

How far back does researcher extraordinaire, upchuck want to go?

The first program for journalism education was introduced by former Confederate General, Robert E. Lee, during his presidency at Washington and Lee University, in Lexington, Virginia, in the 1860s. Both the Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri founded by Walter Williams in 1908 and the Ecole Superieure de Journalisme in Paris, France founded in 1899 claim to be the world’s first journalism school. Although Paris’s school opened its doors in 1899 after three years of internal debates, the question was discussed in Missouri since 1895

That’s the thing that I find so weird. NYPD and LAPD often seem as racist and corrupt as southern law enforcement. We clearly fool ourselves when we pretend that these issues are only a problem in backward areas with terrible educational systems. I’ve had plenty of good encounters with suburban police, but nothing but trouble from city cops.

The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says improperly handled raw milk is responsible for nearly three times more hospitalisations than any other food-borne disease outbreak, making it one of the world’s most dangerous food products.[15][better source needed] Diseases pasteurization can prevent include tuberculosis, brucellosis, diphtheria, scarlet fever, and Q-fever; it also kills the harmful bacteria Salmonella, Listeria, Yersinia, Campylobacter, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli O157:H7,[16][17] among others.
