Lucinda Williams Tears It Up in an NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Something wicked this way comes
Music • Views: 33,538

YouTube

What a treat to find a new video at NPR’s YouTube channel with the great Lucinda Williams and her amazing band.

She came to the Tiny Desk a little unsure, and left singing “West Memphis” with intensity and passion. Lucinda Williams has a voice like no other, and it shines in these intimate moments.

Williams is on a roll with a new double album, Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone, which is filled with fresh and beautiful songs — all this from a songwriter known for working at a deliberate pace. Hearing her perform these new songs with her brilliant band was a rare and exciting treat. — BOB BOILEN

Set List
” Something Wicked This Way Comes”
” Cold Day In Hell”
” Protection”
” West Memphis”

Evening.

So I’ve got to work this Christmas at the hospital, but i do get off early, so I’m taking the kiddos to see Annie. Now if lived in NYC/LA/ATL I’d be going to see Selma as well.

Been hearing alot about the “Selma” movie this week. I was always gonna see Selma, but I also had the Angelina Jolie movie “Unbroken” on my ‘biopic” list. Of the two though, I’ve had at least 3 or 4 people I trust to review movies who have told me that Unbroken is “uneven” and not as good as the hype. Selma on the other hand, I’ve been told is STELLAR. In fact I was told to bring tissue because it’s uplifting, yet bittersweet.

On Rotten Tomatoes, it has 43 critic reviews so far, has a 100% rating among critics and 95% among audiences who have seen it. Wow!

Here’s a new clip from the movie.

Selma New Trailer

I ain’t gonna lie, when the lil girls says at the beginning of this clip “Uncle Marty!” with such joy, I get a little misty!

LOL. For the last two years there were more swallows in San Clemente than there were in San Juan. One of the churches in S.C. was just rotten with them.

I received 4 movie passes as a gift. I’m thinking my choices. Thanks for the tips. Selma definitely. Boyhood is still showing and I really want to see it. Otherwise I’m undecided.

re: #5 #FergusonFireside

the movie looks good. From some readings it also seems the movie does NOT shy away from the subject of King’s infedility. He doesn’t put him on a pedestal, but through scenes with King and wife Corretta, Duvernay tries to show the human side to the man (one such scene i’m hearing about alot involves those taped recording Hoover sent to Corretta King of MLK with another woman. A move by Hoover, BTW, that if not directly ordered by LBJ, was sanctioned when he “allowed” Hoover to do what he could to “distract” King from his plans vis a vis Voting Rights Act).

The director I think was smart because unlike Jolie, she chose to focus on one particular event in the short life of Dr King, the Selma marches, rather than trying to do a true “biopic” of the whole life of MLK (which to my mind there is STILL nothing better than Paul Winfield’s portrayal of King for the TV movie). Jolie on the other hand chose to try to do a complete biopic from life to present and from reviews I’ve read, it was too extraordinary of a life to delegate to just under 3 hrs.

Now that the Dow has hit 18,000, let us remember the worst op-ed in history

On March 6, 2009, former George W. Bush adviser Michael Boskin offered whatever the opposite of a prophesy is when he said that “Obama’s Radicalism Is Killing the Dow.” Now let’s set the scene. Obama had been in office for less than two months at that point, and in that time, stocks had admittedly fallen a lot as markets worried that the big bank bailout known as TARP wouldn’t actually be enough to save the banks. It got so bad that Citigroup briefly became a penny stock.

Boskin, though, didn’t think that this once-in-three-generations financial crisis was to blame for the market meltdown. Instead, he blamed it on Obama for … talking about raising taxes? “It’s hard not to see the continued sell-off on Wall Street and the growing fear on Main Street,” Boskin philosophized, “as a product, at least in part, of the realization that our new president’s policies are designed to radically re-engineer the market-based U.S. economy.”

He is probably like the ONLY George W. Bush advisor that has later been shown to be a fucking idiot. /

116 A Cranky One  Dec 23, 2014 8:20:07pm

UpChuck is a one trick pony. His one and only trick is to use a warped version of the ad hominem argument; smearing his “opponent” or even their families to discredit them and thus somehow validate his position of the moment.

I suspect he’s used the same trick in handling disagreements with the “elite” which I’m guessing is the reason some other conservatives want little to do with him.

His latest is more of the same. Wish I could just ignore him, but frankly he’s a tad scary. Then I think about the fact that folks do pay attention to him, adding depression to scary.

I think Charles has it right. Much of the right wing is just hate driven, and UpChuck’s strategy is nothing unique. Find a reason to hate the “other” and no more thought required.

And as I’m thinking of bed, I see I picture of Charles Manson which reminds me of UpChuck. Even more scared. But I have a cunning plan. Think we could get some of Manson’s and UpChucks dna?

Jabo is a diminutive of Jadgbomber or ‘Pursuit Bomber’. Fighter aircraft used in close support of ground troops.

In WWII the main ones were the Hawker Typhoon, Hawker Tempest and the P47 Thunderbolt on the Western Front and the IL-2 on the Russian Front.

Today the A10 is the best example.

Today I walked by a TV on the way to get a Coke Zero from the vending machine and GB was gesticulating and hyperventilating about NYC and I overheard “they believe all these things, but the problem is the things they believe just AREN’T TRUE!!!”. He even did the little Hitler-esque hand clench to emphasize the last words, like a true Radio Psychopath. 196 klystron  Dec 23, 2014 11:15:23pm

re: #195 William Barnett-Lewis

Oh boy… What happened?

We went out for dinner after the concert. Did a quick loop around town after dinner to check out changes since our last time in and walking around (a new wine bar has opened up and one of the chains had been advertising “under new management” when we were in the city so we wanted to check on our local location) and a full-on fist fight broke out on the street with at least one party fairly drunk from what I overheard.

At the point where they were throwing punches in the middle of the street I opted to call 911. Waited around long enough to make sure that the only parties I saw being detained by police were the ones we saw throwing punches (since we saw it from before the point of actual fighting, at the angry words stage) and then headed home.

One block over from the police station, I have to say the response time was pretty good. And the operator was very professional (they had multiple calls on this incident, she said).

197 klystron  Dec 23, 2014 11:23:22pm

/sigh

Looking at my Twitter feed, I really hope that Upchuck has better things to do with his Christmas Eve than to smear another police shooting victim.

I have (and will acknowledge) privilege. And one facet of that privilege is that I actually see calling 911 and involving the cops when I see a fight as a good thing, although recent events have impacted it somewhat. That is definitely part of why I watched to make sure that the only parties I saw being detained were those who were involved, and that I observed the first interactions of the cops with the folks involved in the fight.

totally OT:

rawstory.com

a story about how the deputy head of the Louvre, 10 days before WWII broke out (and bright enough to know what’s coming)… took it upon himself, without orders, to hide everything. All of it. When Metternich showed up to take possession, there was nothing to be found.

For five years this man, and his “staff” of secret volunteers, kept the art warm and dry and moved from place to place, nobody leaked to the Nazis or the Vichy, and after the war it all came back. None of it was even damaged.

That’s going to be an awesome documentary, I won’t even mind if it’s all subtitles (though truth be told, I’d rather see it dubbed in English).

New York political winners and loser

‘Tis the season to pick the winners and losers of state politics in a year that saw a debate-ducking Gov. Cuomo emerge as Loser No. 1 with a weak re-election tally, a revolt on his political left, a federal probe of his Moreland Commission meddling, poor sales of an autobiography and a cynical refusal to let struggling upstaters drill for natural gas.
Any hope the governor had of running for President if Hillary Rodham Clinton doesn’t seemed to slip away with that “progressive” revolt to the point where “Sabato’s Crystal Ball,” the closely followed political forecaster, declared last week that it was “no longer even listing” Cuomo as a potential 2016 candidate.

I am going to have to disagree, I see Cuomo making a good run of it, because in the next paragraph he leaves this gem:

To many New York Democrats, de Blasio, not Cuomo, is now the de-facto leader of their party.

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

While aspiring and struggling to gain equality, the Israeli Arabs always had the Declaration of Independence to look up to. While not a law, Israeli lawmakers, when legislating basic laws dealing with human and civil rights, always took their cues from the declaration, as did the Supreme Court in its rulings.
The recent nation-state law motion has shattered this fragile equilibrium. In its original version, proposed by right-wing Knesset members, the law tried to settle once and for all the dilemma between the Jewishness of the state and its democratic nature by ruling that if there is a conflict between the two, the Jewish element overcomes the democratic one.
[…]
To put it bluntly, if Israeli Arabs could up till now cling to the Declaration of Independence and hope to sometime be equal in the Jewish state, this law rubs in their face the bitter truth that by law they could forget about it.

And yet, in the released video, there’s no sign of a gun nor that of anything other than a police cruiser showing up outside a gas station and questioning someone, even as there are a number of other people around, including women pushing strollers.

The STL County police claim that the guy had a gun that had a serial number ground off, and that he received prompt medical attention. If the suspect had indeed pulled a gun, that would be sufficient justification to use force by the officer. Yet, all we have to go on is the County Police’s say-so since they didn’t release the video showing the actual shooting, and frankly, this is the same department that ran roughshod over protesters’ rights and didn’t properly investigate Darren Wilson killing Michael Brown either.

There are real good reasons not to trust this departmen when they’ve lied and abused their power under the same exact circumstances previously.

Yet one can see why they don’t want to the guy’s family to see the footage of him being shot dead. I think the SLCPD should give a complete copy of the footage to the FBI and have the Bureau authenticate it for the public. That way, people can have some trust without releasing the footage of the death

The statistics of excessive force and police brutality have always been incomplete. The statistics on racial profiling far less so - and they show that there’s been a long-held policy of racial profiling around the country, so now that technology allows us to see these police confrontations, the fact that racial profiling is onerous and pervasive gets a face to go along with the statistcs.

Now we’re also starting to see these officer-involved shootings and excessive force incidents in video within hours or days of the events. And the police don’t like that one bit, because it shows that there are far too many in law enforcement who are willing to cross the line, and there are far too many good police in law enforcement who wont speak out against it; their silence is complicity with those who engage in excessive force.

Prosecutors likewise have to do better - justice demands it, and yet they keep falling back on the “officer feared for his life” justification, even when the officer had a gun, and the suspect didn’t (or the gun was toy fake or air gun had the officer ever bothered to actually speak with the suspect before opening fire as in the Crawford or Rice cases).

279 lawhawk  Dec 24, 2014 6:13:45am

re: #276 Dark_Falcon

The STL county PD simply can’t be trusted to handle any investigations of officer-involved shootings or excessive force incidents. I don’t trust their judgment in this matter either. Handing the video over to the FBI or DoJ is an acceptable procedure, but frankly the PD shouldn’t be involved in investigating itself, which it will be doing. It’s previous actions show it can’t do so. It’s more interested in covering up its own bad actions than protecting and defending the public.

So true. For so long, it was always our word vs theirs. And we know how that played out in the public. At least Black people in America feel like we have a chance now in these encounters. Still don’t expect anything but unfair treatment, but there is a chance the true story gets out.

And remember, STL had a case before Mike Brown was killed where a Black suspect had a gun planted on them. I won’t trust anything they say. STL said that Kajieme Powell was charging officers with a knife over his head. Video proved that was a lie. Dotson said Mike Brown was 30 feet from DW police cruiser. That was a lie.

281 lawhawk  Dec 24, 2014 6:23:04am

That would appear to be blood in the foreground, with the evidence markers of 3 and 4 flanking it. The gun is being picked up at marker 5. That is a fair distance from each other, and it is possible the gun was in the suspect’s hand after he fell, and the officer involved kicked the gun clear as part of securing the scene.

Still, the police have zero credibility in the eyes of the community, so they have to rebuild trust with the community. Sharing more details - and sharing them more quickly is key, but so too is recognizing that the conflict of interests in a police department investigating its own actions in officer-involved shootings means that the public isn’t going to trust the outcome of that investigation - not when we saw how the county pd acted in the Wilson investigation. Independent prosecutors should be a national requirement in these cases, and a qualified police investigation from outside the involved department should also be mandatory. It also means that coroners’ offices have to change their procedures too - including giving police benefit of the doubt in these instances that means evidence isn’t gathered in the same manner as all other homicide cases.

After the Eric Garner no indictment, I had a very good conversation with my wife (who is White) and other very close White friends. They all felt that the Garner no indictment was a worse situation than the Mike Brown no indictment, because of the video. I feel the opposite way, but not because of the video. I wouldn’t presume to speak for all Black people, but I wonder if my feelings are shared. It was worse in Ferguson because of how I see the prosecutors being such a joke. There is no attempt at justice. I’ve read through some of the GJ transcripts, and it makes me want to puke. As Johnny Cochran said in the OJ case: “Who police the police? You police the police.” Of course this is to a trial jury, and we’ve seen how many of these Officer involved shootings don’t get to be policed.

re: #282 nearly-headless smith25

The video of Garner being choked to death makes the failure to indict the officer in that case all the more gut-wrenching, and there was prosecutorial error there as well - the failure to consider charges other than homicide such as reckless endangerment by the officer using an illegal choke hold.

The Wilson case shows how the entire process is fixed to prevent cops from being indicted, let alone tried or convicted in a criminal court for killing people under suspicious circumstances.

Everything from how the evidence was gathered to how the police behaved shows the process is screwed up. Add to that the prosecutorial misconduct in allowing witnesses to testify that the prosecutor knew was not at the scene and invented testimony as to what they had seen.

It’s sickening to watch all this happen over and over and over, and police and politicians alike don’t do anything about it because of shared interest in maintaining the status quo - police unions vote, and politicians jump.

Native American Council Offers Amnesty to 240 Million Undocumented Whites
1 week ago

The Native American National Council will offer amnesty to the estimated 240 million illegal white immigrants living in the United States.

At a meeting on Friday in Taos, New Mexico, Native American leaders weighed a handful of proposals about the future of the United State’s large, illegal European population. After a long debate, NANC decided to extend a road to citizenship for those without criminal records or contagious diseases.

“We will give Europeans the option to apply for Native Citizenship,” explained Chief Sauti of the Nez Perce tribe. “To obtain legal status, each applicant must write a heartfelt apology for their ancestors’ crimes, pay an application fee of $5,000, and, if currently on any ancestral Native land, they must relinquish that land to NANC or pay the market price, which we decide.

Don’t mess around with those silly toys.

On my little laptop screen, that video actually looked pretty clear.
The policeman was an idiot to leave his bodycam in the police car but he was fortunate that there was, as far as I could tell, good surveillance video. The problem is that mutual distrust is so high that even a pretty good video isn’t good enough; what MIGHT be a clear-cut case will never be that.

Related to my post from yesterday about trying to deal with my otherwise kind and generous father’s Fox-fed rants about how this is all the fault of our race-baiter-in-chief and the liberal cop-haters… In the same phone call he also threw in some comments about how fed up he was with “the war on Christmas.”

Not that I’ve been able to find. All the info is just anti-Muslim wingnuts referencing each other, with most leading back to Upchuck’s story.

I don’t see why it would matter if he had worked for ISNA. Would that make the organization guilty of something? As I said yesterday in my rather long-winded rant, the Muslim angle is low-hanging fruit because people are willing to believe the worst about Muslims and/or Islamic organizations.

If there is a meaningful connection between Brinsley’s decision to kill the cops and any of his past employers, then I’m sure it will eventually come to light via investigations by law enforcement.

Spencer, Geller, Frontpage, GoV, the entire cast of assholes has glommed onto this already, so trying to refute anything put out there to slime Muslims is mostly going to be an exercise in futility. People want to believe the worst.

No, but it does have bearing on the scare mongering that’s going on. There is a concerted effort being made to link fears of terrorism together with Black protestors in the person of Brinsley. From there it’s just a hop, skip, and jump to associating the entire protest movement with terrorism in people’s minds in an attempt to thoroughly discredit it.

True, and when I write “all he did was…”, in this particular context it has to do with the provenance of his information about Brinsley, not with whether he also added a mountain of bullshit to it (which he of course did). If all we had to go on were his screenshots, they would have proved nothing. Since we can check his info ourselves, his (negative) credibility plays no role.

V’s in the ER. Intense pain behind her main incision which turned bright red and very hot within two hours. She hasn’t kept anything down since yesterday morning.

Last time we went through this seven years ago she ended up getting sepsis and lost her gall bladder to gangrene.

Good luck and safe flight there - and that’s why I bring my noise canceling headphones for those trips. They drown out most plane noise, and quite a bit of the background noise like what you’re dealing with. They’re worth every penny - and make for a far more relaxing flight than otherwise possible.

And he referred to them as unindicted coconspirators in terrorism cases (but perish the thought that anyone refer to Darren Wilson as an unindicted murderer (he committed homicide, which the GJ and prosecutor declined to indict).

Exactly. I was just making coffee & toasting a bagel, thinking that’s the thing that bugs me the most: Brinsley truly was a thug with a long record to prove it. He was a killer who, according to reports, had serious mental problems. Nothing he said would be considered credible by the people who consider Upchuck a trustworthy news source, unless it could be used to smear those they dislike. Brinsley then suddenly becomes credible.

It’s like Geller & Co. constantly screaming about how nearly every moderate utterance or action by Muslims falls under the anti-Mulsim counter-jihadists’ twisted, bullshit rubric of taqiyyah. It’s only the most vile statements by radical extremists like Anjem Choudary that are considered truthful, labeled as something required by all “pious Muslims”.

So Brinsley? Murderous thug! Criminal! Liar who can’t be trusted!… Except for the part where he says he worked for ISNA, that they can believe with unquestioning certainty, and then turn it into something sinister with the help of assholes like Upchuck.

re: #420 CuriousLurker

Look at John Schindler, who is considered a “serious person” by many. He uncritically took Chuck’s assertion that Brinsley worked at ISNA and ran with it, praising Chuck. Of course, “he worked at ISNA” and “he claimed to have worked there” are worlds apart. One can’t simply trust what an unstable person claims about themselves. Not to mention that even if it is true, in what capacity did he work there? Maybe waited a table once? Or was a janitor? And even if he was in a position of responsibility, this still isn’t anything but random chance. There is no indication in his pre-murder messages that he did this on religious grounds. So what does it matter where he worked?

But “serious persons” like that dick-pic guy are promoting it anyway.

425 CuriousLurker  Dec 24, 2014 11:41:53am

re: #424 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD

Unfortunately, I’m not at all surprised to hear Schindler ran with it. I followed him briefly some time back, but then quit because I could sense the anti-Muslim bias just underneath his words. People can be really subtle in how they word things, y’know? They make it sound almost reasonable.

Whereas what people should do is go back to that first part: Nothing Brinsley said should be considered credible, since even his rationale for his rampage was a lie. It was never about the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown, it was about Brinsley’s desire to get as much attention possible while playing out his “revenge on the world” psychodrama.
