The Most Unusual and Twisted Short Film Since Eraserhead: “Self-Assembly”

So many trigger warnings I can’t even

I just discovered this amazing and unsettling short film by Ray Sullivan on Vimeo, and at first I actually hesitated to post it because it’s … disturbing. In some ways, it’s reminiscent of David Lynch’s weird classic “Eraserhead.” But with more realism and more goo.

Bereaved parents find a monstrous substitute for their dead son.

Directed by Ray Sullivan
Written by Garret Shanley
Based on the comic strip story & characters created by Gar Shanley & Cathal Duggan
Shot on location in Dublin, Ireland.

I’m afraid to watch this. I thought The Shift was quite disturbing. “So many trigger warnings I can’t even…”?

I’m afraid to watch this.

As an AICN regular since that site’s early beginnings who’s familiar with the poster’s tastes, I have to admit that seeing the “It’s dark and twistedly full of humor” line of endorsement makes me hesitant to click the play button (in an ‘oh hell, it’s dark and twisted by THEIR standards’ kind of way)…

Nah, will watch it tomorrow, time to hit the bed

For those who would like more disturbing weirdness, try to find Jan Svankmajer’s film Little Otik (orig. Otesanek). The premise is somewhat similar.

Merry early Christmas everybody.

I know it may not be the coolest thing nowadays, but it’s become a Christmas tradition of mine since after Katrina to watch It’s A Wonderful Life. Started it in DFW when I was all alone for Christmas.

It’s not Christmas until I watch ole George and Mary, lil Susie and ole guardian angel Clarence.

Really though, it because I remember when I was younger I just couldn’t wait to get away from my family, my crappy job and from what I considered my sad life in NOLA, I truly felt like I was somehow being held back by family, life, obligations, etc. In fact, right before Katrina, I had actually gone to. Houston for a job interview but the money wasn’t what I considered enough to move away from hime with no support.

Well, not 2 months later Katrina hit, and had no choice but to leave NOLA. I got my wish, I left NOLA, and eventually my family ALL moved back to NOLA, so I got my wish to get away from my extended family. I enjoyed my life in DFW, but I can honestly say I was truly homesick for all 7 of those years there and especially during Christmas and New Year’s.

So leaving aside the attempted suicide, the whole social contract plot line, and even the romance, it just always hit close to home the idea that sometimes getting what you wanted may not actually be what you need.

It took me almost 10 years to get back to NOLA and now I can’t see myself leaving anytime soon. Now I satisfy the melancholy with a visit to my cousin, or talking with my mother, or just looking at whatever new pic I have of/with Maddie.

So in a way, I guess I had my own little bit of my own kinda of “what if I left this old town”, type of revelation.

So fuq yeah, I love It’s A Wonderful Life…so shoot me.

I remember hearing “Jewish people eat Chinese food on Christmas Eve” jokes from our neighbors and friends the Finkelstein’s and the Greenberg’s back in the late sixties. After dinner, they’d come over, as well as a bunch of other neighbors, of all colors and creeds, and records would be played loudly and all the grown-ups would get sloshed out of their skulls while us kids would bust a gut at their antics. I have fond memories of all those drunk adults dancing the Twist, the Watusi and the Madison on Christmas day.

Did I mention that my family is Irish? That might have something to do with the wild goings on.

Not really, because Jews do dairy. Lots of dairy. Blintzes, cheesecake, cheese danish.

My opinion (and I am not a culinary historian like @koshersoul) is that pizza was invented by Roman soldiers in Judea, who tried to “spice up” matzah.

An example of what is being published by the sociopath Shamir in Counterpunch:

This appears to be a staple feature of the US-arranged revolutions. Snipers killing both protesters and police were reported in Moscow’s 1991 and 1993 revolutions, as well as in many other cases. Some sources claim that famed Israeli snipers were employed on such occasions, which is plausible in view of Mr Kolomoysky’s Israeli connection. A personal friend of Mr Kolomoysky, prominent member of the then-opposition, Parliamentarian and present head of administration Sergey Pashinsky was stopped by police as he removed a sniper’s rifle with a silencer from the scene of murder. This discovery was briefly reported in the New York Times, but later removed. This revelation eliminates (or at least seriously undermines) the case against the President. Probably it will be disappear down the memory hole and be totally forgotten, as were the Seymour Hersh revelations about Syria’s sarin attack.

I had speculated the chinese don’t really do dairy, so a natural compatibility was kinda there to build on. Make any sense?

It helps that meat/dairy is not a mix you’re going to find in Chinese food. And the treif bits, the pork and shellfish, are part of a mixed stirfry, or rolled into a fried thing, so one can sort of pretend not to know it’s there.

V had gastric bypass surgery a week ago Monday. She went through the surgery fine, but the recovery has been rough. Right now she can’t eat without upchucking, partly because her 7 incisions are infected, 1 rather nastily.

Funny enough, I swear I read somewhere that they are actually developing an It’s A Wonderful Life sequel.

There was a TV remake starring Marlo Thomas way back when in the seventies. Can’t imagine a sequel to the original would be anything other than a remake. Though a Tarantino version with Christoph Waltz as a grown-up Zuzu, part-time florist/full-time assassin, does have potential.

They adore this cat. They wanted a webcam to watch this cat when they go out of town.

They got that for Christmas (a little early, since they are out of town for it this year).

They set it up. He gets e-mails whenever there is motion detected.

We can now watch a cat go to the litterbox from 3000 miles away.

Wanted to say in last thread that, post surgical nausea is exactly what Zofran is designed for, that and chemo. It blocks the chemical triggers of nausea, and as such doesn’t work for motion sickness. In turn anti motion sickness remedies like Dramamine won’t do a damned thing to help here, just in case that crossed anybody’s mind. Kind of surprised the surgeon didn’t prescribe something for this considering the type of surgery.

I know you said she wouldn’t go for it, but I’d be sorely tempted to inquire of her doctor about a medical mj recommendation. The local pot shop probably has some kind of infusion or tincture that’d work without having to be swallowed or smoked / vaped. Every other medication option comes with at least some non-trivial risk of a significant adverse event.

Obama travels back in time to December 1955 to institute NORAD Santa tracking by printing the wrong phone number in a Sears ad. This experience stands him in good stead when he later travels back to 1961 to print the wrong address in his birth announcement.

Apparently the twit never heard of the colonel who started getting calls on his top secret red phone from kids because of wrong number in a Sears ad giving Santa’s phone number. Calling the watch officer at NORAD in the 50s.. His airmen joked around later by putting a sleigh on the status board. Rather than getting mad he called a local radio station and reported that they were tracking a ufo :)

He later considered it one of the greatest things he did in his career.

169 wheat-dogghazi-bola-trality  Dec 25, 2014 3:59:29am

Merry Christmas, everyone! Or whichever holiday you choose to observe/not observe, as the case may be. Here on the other side of the International Date Line it is now evening on the 25th. My college here has had its annual Christmas Eve gala in which I sang twice - Silent Night with another foreign teacher and a Chinese New Year song with dancers and other singers.

The second involved me lip synching to my own voice — a first for me! We visited a local recording studio a few days ago to dub the vocals over a background track. The first one we just performed live - in English and Chinese!

These shows (which the Chinese call parties) are a Thing here. Every college (aka “department” in the American vernacular) is expected to put on a gala, with the students doing most of the organization and sponsor-seeking. They are end-of-term things for most colleges. Since we’re the English language college, ours is always on Dec. 24. Our show included several dance acts, some singers, a comedy skit and a sign language performance of a popular song. Almost no direct reference to Christmas, other than our Silent Night duet. By now, I’m so used to the cultural disconnect that I don’t even notice.

On the bright side, there are no overdoses of schmaltzy Christmas music.

I taught my last classes of the term today, and give my last exams on Monday and Tuesday. Once I mark those and hand in my grades, I will be free until March 6! The Chinese lunar calendar gets an extra month this year — a leap month — so our winter holiday is longer than usual.

173 Justanotherhuman  Dec 25, 2014 4:15:18am

Sorry I sounded so surly above, but all the grinning skulls on the news are highlighting how much people are spending and commerce, commerce, commerce and giving it their best fake-all. Can’t they ever just STFU about it? The Dow being over 18K isn’t helping most of us anyway, since wages have been stagnant for several decades now and many are still having trouble paying for basic needs while hoping something terrible doesn’t happen, on purpose, to those they love.

Now, we’ll have to go through the whole thing again as they recap the entirety of 2014.

I feel sometimes I’m just getting too old and cynical for this shit. My mood should brighten a little later when family comes in for the meal I have going on. My son mentioned the other night that the bright spot of the holidays is that he and his work mate get to take home leftovers so they can have “home cooking” for a couple of more days. : )

US offers $5M reward for al Qaeda leader released from Gitmo

The Obama administration is scrambling to track down an al Qaeda terrorist released from Guantanamo Bay years ago, offering a $5 million reward for information on him and placing him on a global terrorist list.
Ibrahim al-Rubaysh was originally released in 2006 by the George W. Bush administration and put into a Saudi Arabian “rehabilitation” program. However, al-Rubaysh returned to the battlefield and now serves as a top leader with al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula — one of the most dangerous al Qaeda affiliates.

Just got back to my place from opening presents at the ex’s with my boy. He’s happy with his loot.

I scored a copy of the 1986 edition of Captain Wayne P. Hughes Jr’s classic “Fleet Tactics: Theory and Practice”. As a treadhead and ground pounder, a firm knowledge of modern naval thinking has been lacking. Mahan, while interesting historically, is no substitute.

I’ve already learned one interesting tidbit: When asked what he’d change about the new Arleigh Burke class named for him, Admiral Burke commented he’d add a brace of cutlasses. Because, once all those missiles are expended, then what? There’s a good lesson there that I doubt anyone in the pentagon is listening to.

Immediate post surgery? Might be a bad idea, it can reduce resistance to infection and is a bad idea with antibiotics. Or so I have been warned by a trusted reasonable Doc.

Had not heard that one, personally. This may be one of those things where the Google is your friend?

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas Tab

I have friends who are all about how “happy holidays” = bad. IT’S CHRISTMAS DAMMIT! (Don’t we all) Their reactions throughout the year when I wish them Happy Hanukkah/Eid/Chinese New Year/etc. is great. Especially when they say “Why would you say that? I’m not Jewish/Muslim/Chinese blah blah.” :))))

Re: Jews and Chinese food-

It’s not just a “Jewish” thing. Really anybody who isn’t cooking on Xmas may have limited choices of restaurants. Chinese places are often the only restaurants open on the holiday. I learned this when my mother’s cooking plans fell through on one Christmas years ago, and after calling around we found the only place open was a Chinese buffet. For a couple of years afterwards, that was my family’s Christmas dinner. I rather enjoyed it, and I’m thinking right now that if I hadn’t eaten like $50 worth of Lebkuchen cookies since yesterday, I’d go out for buffet this afternoon. :P

In my case, my mother dying of a brain cancer. A bit of herb from my best friend (the only times in her life) made those last days better. So, yeah, I believe.

Wow, Oh man. Hard days there. I sat through my Moms passing after the proverbial plug was pulled as per her wishes. hardest thing in my whole life by far.

I was at work when I got the call my mom died of cancer. My siblings were there when she died though, so she wasn’t alone.

As an expat, I do get homesick for the USA around the holidays, but this endless squabbling over Christmas greetings does help assuage my homesickness.

If it is simply about quietly practicing your religion, then it does not matter what sort of greetings to give to a person as long as they are truly well meant. But if it is about imposing your religion/ideology on people, then there is no end of ways to find offense at any greeting given.

I know the feeling. DFW really punishes living alone. I’ve been completely by myself here (no family, no more live-in girlfriend, not much contact with friends) for almost two years now and if you don’t have somebody to split driving and shopping duties with, that alone will drag you down - Never mind trying to make a social life work without a designated driver. :P

I put up lights, put out my little 18” plastic tree from Target, eat cookies, and watch the XMas/Robot Santa episodes of Futurama. Yesterday I stopped at the local comic shop on the way back from work and gifted myself Green Lantern: The Sinestro Corps War, Green Lantern Chronicles Volume 1 and a big softcover book copy of The Watchmen.

It doesn’t feel very Christmas-y but it’s the best I can do right now. I intend for this to be my last Christmas in DFW. If my plans work out, I’ll be moved much closer to home and maybe I could even see my family.

Mom was a good catholic in the end, despite some rather serious ratfucks that are a big chunk of why I am an Episcopalian rather than a Roman. As a result she chose to stop eating. The weed helped on a number of levels.
