A Post-Christmas Recovery Open Thread, Featuring HMSTR

Rodent punks

You could never fully steal the show when you’re followed by the blown-out spectacle of Sun Ra Arkestra’s Tiny Desk Concert. But the opening act kept jumping on the piano and nibbling on the set, literally pulling up the carpet and leaving “presents” on the floor. How could we not have them back? Did I mention they’re hamsters?

Joni and Nash — first names only, please, like Madonna and Cher — are HMSTR. Certainly not the first band to count rodents among its members, but at least they refuse to release a punk album with no punk to be found. “Snow Day” is HMSTR’s first single, a twee-as-all-get-out holiday pop-punk song by virtue of having “snow” in its title. After what sounds like digital snowflakes, the song unleashes a one-minute snowball fight with the fuzziest Tiny Desk destroyers we’ve ever seen.

You can download “Snow Day” from HMSTR’s Bandcamp page. Happy holidays! — LARS GOTRICH

Happy Boxing Day, Lizards! What does one do on Boxing Day, anyway? Pack up the presents you didn’t want and ship them back to Amazon?

Currently recovering from our now-traditional Christmas Dinner: the Honeybaked Ham Mrs. FBW’s Dad sends us every Christmas, a roast turkey breast, stuffing, gravy, and mashed potatoes because the Older Boy sees a Christmas Dinner that isn’t really just a Thanksgiving Dinner as ‘Dad Ruins Christmas Forever’, ever since I tried something different - ONCE.

His GF has been working at Williams Sonoma, and got us a bunch of their most dangerous treats for Christmas, so I’ve been trying and failing to resist them.

Even though we all knew what we were getting, we managed to make Christmas Morning exciting…

Alternate theory on Sony Hack points to Russian hackers, not North Korea
Xeni Jardin at 6:31 am Fri, Dec 26, 2014

Excerpt:

The New York Times’ Nicole Perlroth writes about an alternate theory emerging around the Sony Pictures hack, which the FBI and the president himself have blamed on North Korea—and which much of the American public now perceives as an “act of war” by North Korea, as John McCain put it.
[nested quote:]
Computational linguists at Taia Global, a cybersecurity consultancy, performed a linguistic analysis of the hackers’ online messages — which were all written in imperfect English — and concluded that based on translation errors and phrasing, the attackers are more likely to be Russian speakers than Korean speakers.

Then we should just attack them both simultaneously, occupy their capitals, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity!

Considering the longstanding rivalry based on similar ideology (Russia/China), that might be considered about as reckless as sponsoring, say, American hackers.

The other day on FB, I saw a post where that bloviating buffoon O’Reilly called on DeBlasio to resign, because he’d lost the respect of the police.

My take on it is that the police owe the Mayor their respect regardless, because the people for whom they work chose him. Same with the President - he is owed respect and obedience by the military because the people put him there, and they work for us.

When we start letting police departments or the military choose our leaders based on whether or not those leaders are sufficiently obsequious, we stop being a democracy.

How long before Russian minorities in Belarus are ‘threatened’ and being subjected to ‘appalling treatment’ and the shit hits the fan?

That seems to be the pretext Putin looks for - allegedly shabby treatment of Russian minorities in other lands, thereby justifying intervention.

I’m bending my brain around the concept that countries are no longer countries as I’ve been taught to understand them. They are really “government corporations” trying to compete with “market corporations” on a global level.

It’s not a perfect theory, but I think it’s helping me to understand some of the phenom I’ve been missing.

Like Putin. All this behavior of the past year is more like that of a CEO trying to show he has the biggest, baddest dick there is. Less nationalistic pride and more company pride. Not like a monarch, like a Wall Street Player.

I don’t think he can pull it off.

Thankfully I don’t listen to any of them. The Faux news channel is “blocked” on my TV. If you flip through the channels it doesn’t stop on that channel, just passes by. You can still go to the channel directly by inputting the channel number, but it doesn’t stop there when just flipping channels.

I’m beginning to think policing in America is going to be one of the biggest issues between conservatives and liberals in the 2016 elections. And that will be presidential and congressional.

And it is not going to be pretty.

Why, it is almost like 1968 again.

Hmmm. I wonder if Columbus will get the 2016 Democratic convention*? If it does get to be like 1968, this city could be in for a bumpy ride.

In a way there is a bit of a ‘68-like thing going on as there does seem to be a far left group building that is not happy with Democrats these days. It might not be about a war, more about the war on people…a larger Occupy Movement thing asking for candidates to take on the 1%ers.

*The host site for the convention will be announced in January.

No, it’s not a discussion. And it’s a discussion that few are willing to entertain because it’s TL;DR. Even when we’re dealing with life and death issues; issues that disproportionately affect minorities; and longstanding racism, notions of criminal justice, and equal protection under the law.

These cops have been going on for the better part of the past two weeks about how Mayor DeBlasio slandered them for insinuating that his son has to be careful around cops. Never mind that fellow minority cops have to be careful around their fellow cops when off-duty, and that those minority cops feel the sting of racial profiling when off duty as well.

Behind even the odious statements and acts by the PBA is the fact that this is a ploy in negotiating a new contract with the city. They’ve decided that they’ll insinuate that the mayor is weak on crime and that things will go badly for the city if they don’t get their way - even as crime is at historical lows in the City and that the NYPD has ended the policy of stop and frisk without any increase in crime rate (and the city is on track to having the same or lower murder rate and crime rates).

Demanding better policing and police tactics is not the same as attacking the department.

Demanding accountability and weeding out bad cops is not attacking the Department.

Demanding that prosecutors and grand juries find indictments for unjustified use of force, excessive force, or shootings of unarmed persons, is not attacking the Department. It’s all for making sure that the Department holds itself to the highest standards and that cops aren’t above the law.

It’s just that none of the aforementioned statements easily fits into 140 characters.

Well, we could have some fun with it nonetheless.

I’m trying to come up with a left side equal to Alex Jones. I guess I would say maybe Bill Maher, but then he may be considered a libertarian which tosses him out of consideration.

Then I think of the Jerome Corsi, Joseph Farah, Judge Napolitano, Alan West, Michelle Malkin, Ted Nugent, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Dennis Miller, Bryan Fischer, Pat Robertson, Ann Coulter, Bill Kristol, Michael Savage, Larry Klayman…on and on.

I just don’t see how the left can compare and compete!

Conclusion on my part…they are not at all equal.

OK, so I’ve been reviewing the arguments against the FBI’s claim that North Korea hacked Sony, and while they’re not totally without merit, everything I’ve seen so far boils down to one issue - the FBI claims to have conclusive evidence they can’t reveal for national security reasons, but the security experts arguing against North Korea don’t trust the FBI.

Security people are making circumstantial arguments that only cast doubt on the FBI’s claim - they can’t disprove it conclusively. And the FBI can’t prove it conclusively without revealing info they say must remain secret. That’s where it stands right now.

Remember, prosecutors are used to working with police departments to obtain indictments and convictions.

Asking them to work against the police is tantamount to a conflict of interest in many cases.

Well I hope everyone had a good holiday at any rate. We did; it was fabulously warm and not a controversial comment to be found. Hanging over our heads, though, was that this was the first xmas without our beloved son, brother, father, and ex-husband. At least, it wasn’t mentioned in my presence.

From the looks of things, though, it appears that the US is at war with itself, and I don’t want to check out when it’s in this state. That’s a scary thought—that a democracy could cease to exist.

I have to half-heartedly agree with the person who commented the other day that this country might not last the rest of the century intact. But it doesn’t have to be that way—can we stop it?

83 goddamnedfrank  Dec 26, 2014 3:08:26pm

He’s openly playing with fire now and is likely to get burned bad. The Encyclopedia Brown routine isn’t going to save him if he accuses the wrong person. He’s painted himself so far into a corner with his need to insist that the FBI is lying about the Sony hack that he feels it necessary to ID a suspect. He’s already used the term “person of interest,” as if he’s a real detective, solving crimes. Problem is that the very FBI he’s accusing of either incompetence or conspiracy is the agency that a civil courts will look to regarding whatever involvement his “suspect” might have with the case.

In libel per se there’s no need to prove actual malice, the false accusation of criminality is itself considered so poisonous that assumed damages automatically attach.

I do not have a lot of trouble with the thought of the country ending the century a lot differently than it was when the century started. We have to get over the Cold War and the post-Cold War neo-con delusions of grandeur that we could endure as the world’s sole superpower.

We need to stop measuring our progress and prosperity in terms of how many resources we consume, we need to stop measuring military strength in terms of how much we spend on defense and we need to stop measuring law & order in terms of how many people we incarcerate.

I for one am hoping he steps in it big time. It is eventually headed that way for him, so why not just let it happen now and be done with him.

Of course, if taken down by the FBI, that will also elevate him to some kind of journalistic hero status…so there is that.

I was speaking to the participatory democratic notion.

Of course, to have a fruitful democracy, you must have people who are educated to that notion and to the inclusiveness of a diversity in population. Every single person is important to it.

I think I’ve mentioned around here, I had a good friend that was involved in education form a political standpoint and also was involved in the mental health field.

Before he died 3 years ago, he was getting more and more convinced that all the fighting over school funding, charter schools, home-schooling, Texas Book Fuckers, etc, was all geared to tear this countries education system down for the very reason as to allow the 1%ers to have total control and a ready work force of unquestioning robot direction followers.

In some ways, I fear he may have been right all along.

Education is the most important gift we can give the children of this country, not the gluttony of consumerism we’ve just been through.

It reminds me of the time I was in line at the grocery store and the young women just graduating HS was bragging to the cashier that she just got a new car. Her father gave her the choice of paying her college tuition or the car—she chose the car.

I remarked to the man standing behind me, “Well, she’ll be mobile, if not educated. Tragic.”

They felt betrayed by Reagan after he used them to gain power then quietly tossed them aside as soon as Nancy’s house astrologer told her the time was right.

One of my biggest worries about the next couple decades is that exhaustion of fossil fuels is going to force significant changes in how people arrange their lives— housing and who we choose to live with, and under what terms, how we acquire an education that is considered acceptable for employment, how we arrange transport for commuting to work, shopping, what we use for money, etc.

The multitude of current laws and regulations, local, state, and national that govern such things is going to make criminals of nearly all of us, as we strive to adjust away from the status-quo, even a little.

Add to that worry that the per capita income will continue to fall, if you remove the wealth of the top 10% in the US, and in other countries that follow its economy. When capitalists don’t plow money back into R&D and capitalize within the country that buys their products and/or services, that’s a recipe for economic disaster for the the 90%.

We see how de-industrialization has worked in the US already, replaced with low-paying jobs that cannot support a single person on their own, much less a family or other dependents.

The “future” belongs to all of us. Each person’s “future” is not only dependent on the past, but on how we lives our lives as well, for future generations we produce. Every generation, in various ways,, fashions the future for the next, who shape it to their own expectations.

The good books on the topic are:

William G. Dever, Who Were the Early Israelites, and Where Did They Come From?

Israel Finkelstein, Neil Asher Silberman, The Bible Unearthed: Archaeology’s New Vision of Ancient Israel and the Origin of Sacred Texts

Dever presents a balanced, “centrist” consensus. He’s a well-known opponent of the “minimalists” like Finkelstein. Finkelstein’s conclusions about the reigns of David and Solomon are a matter of controversy and should be read with care.

But on the topic of the sojourn-exodus-conquest narrative these opponents, both highly respected archaeologists, basically agree.

Some thoughts for all you heathen:

What Makes Children Stop Believing in Santa Claus?

[…]

Adults tell children a lot of things that defy the basic laws of physics and biology. One might think, as I did, that the growing intellect that leads a child to become suspicious of Santa-related mythology might also lead him or her to become skeptical of religious mythology in general. But Shtulman says the two sorts of fantasies are not created equal. “People openly claim that Santa is not real, as is evident from any holiday show that includes the stock character of the hard-nosed, Santa-doubting Grinch,” he told me. And part of the deal with Santa is that the adults know they’re selling a lie. At some point the adults usually stop lying, and then they ask children who have learned the truth to help perpetuate the Santa myth among children who still believe. “Testimony about religious beings, on the other hand, is much more credible among believers and much more guarded among doubters.” And he’s probably right; an adult who admitted to believing in airborne reindeer would be openly mocked. An adult who admitted to believing in God is more likely to be respected.

Shtulman says it’s an interesting question “whether children are as skeptical of the extraordinary properties of religious beings as they are of the extraordinary properties of Santa, at least later in development.” If they are, atheists who want to recruit new members to their growing movement should take note. Perhaps young children simply need to be exposed to a few more Grinches to encourage their natural skepticism.

It’s nice to know that the Biblical massacres never happened, that ancient Israelites didn’t commit a genocide against Canaanites, and, in fact, for all intents and purposes, were basically Canaanites themselves, not some conquerors who stole some other people’s land, as the Bible would have it.

Future inhabitants of this continent will wonder about their past and have to believe something. I suspect the widespread, often inaccurate, beliefs about the American revolution today will linger in the common memory. How they will morph is the question.

We humans, being the religious things we are, will somehow deify the whole thing. Heck, we already do that (Mormons, some wingnut fundamentalists, etc.)

This idea was briefly explored, IIRC, in A Canticle for Leibowitz. But that was set too close to the present. In the deeper future, when the languages have morphed beyond recognition, if say Mount Rushmore survives in some form, even damaged, legends will be needed to describe it. And Hoover Dam, and the other monumental works that will outlive our own society and nation.

In the deeper future, when the languages have morphed beyond recognition, if say Mount Rushmore survives in some form, even damaged, legends will be needed to describe it. And Hoover Dam, and the other monumental works that will outlive our own society and nation.

And in that far future there will be numerous cranks who insist that the remains of places like Mt. Rushmore and Hoover Dam are proof positive that aliens have visited the planet. Their argument will be that the puny humans of our time, using only the primitive tools available to us, could not have created such monumental structures without the help of our space buddies.

The end of the century? No, that doesn’t belong to us.

I certainly don’t appreciate 100 year old ideas trying to take hold today. (mostly religious stuff).

I’m into my 8th decade. I haven’t seen people’s basic thought change a hell of a lot in all these years. If you break it down into its most fundamental form, there are people who really care about all people, and those who don’t or are just apathetic, and I haven’t seen a lot of change there in the last 70+ years, politically or socially, overall, just the way people express it.

That said, none of us is ever the same person we were born as, grew up as, or are at most stages of our lives, if we change and allow the scales to drop from our eyes and recognize that all of us are human and have the desire to survive—and most of us do if we educate ourselves, and that doesn’t take a college degree. It’s the ones who don’t develop empathy or change a selfish and destructive attitude toward all others, because of their own insecurities, who worry me.

You reach your hand out like he did unless you’re pointing something with it, and the police found a gun. Put together with the Martin’s criminal background and it’s a clean shooting unless proven otherwise.

Those should be investigated. What I think might have happened is the police wanted to recover the gun before anything else, to make sure that they had the evidence to back up what they’d seen happen. Or they might have put in a call but the ambulance was delayed.

This is all supposition, though.

I’m so, so sorry that it offends you that I referred to the person who was shot as a victim in this case. So terribly sorry. I didn’t realize that pulling a gun on a cop meant that one forfeit any right to medical care ever. victim: n. a person harmed, injured, or killed as a result of a crime, accident, or other event or action.

As in, the act of being shot made Antoine Martin a victim of a shooting by dictionary definition, regardless of the context.

Victim is not an antonym to “guilty of something.”*

*except in wingnut land where there is a Manicheanean re-definition along the lines of:

victim: n. a totally innocent person with no qualities that are objectionable that has had something bad happen to them and we can’t find an excuse for.

As that lady isn’t a victim since she was in the wrong part of town. That guy was a convicted felon, so he isn’t a victim of rape.

It’s a technical description. Like we would also say - “… he then hit innocent bystanders”, “they put an innocent man in jail”, although nobody is innocent in the absolute sense and we don’t know if the bystanders or the unjustly convicted person were innocent in other senses (such as not having committed any (other) crimes). We still understand what is being said, namely, that “innocent” applies to this specific context.

And that would be the trouble with you and a lot of people who participate in the legal system. Try homicide: the killing of one human being by another. Notice there’s no reference to intent, yet most people use it only if it implies something like first degree murder.

Moreover, dictionaries don’t “live” in a vacuum. They are - or at least are supposed to be - a representation of how the words are actually used in real life (incl. professional/technical terms). There is this famous example of how one of the dictionary defs of evolution doesn’t correspond to the scientific def. But this doesn’t mean that those definitions are wrong - people do really talk about “evolution” in a non-scientific sense all the time. The mistake lies only in applying the everyday meaning to science. DF makes a similar (if a bit reverse) mistake, namely he loads the “dry” term “victim” with connotations that were not meant to be there in context.

I need a reliable and easy Pasta Fajoli recipe.

(do I need to mention, meatless?)

This one is more soup than thick, but. Sister says she swaps in veggie broth for the beef stock and increases the amount of veggies as desired.

Pasta Faguli

3 Tbsp olive oil
1 medium-size onion, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed
2 celery stalks finely sliced
1 carrot, finely diced
1 Tbsp tomato paste
5 cups beef stock
1 (15 ounce) can red kidney beans, drained
3 ounces pasta shapes
4 ounce frozen peas
salt and pepper

Heat oil in a large saucepan. Add onion, garlic, celery and carrot. Stir and cook gently 5 minutes.

Add tomato paste, stock and beans. Bring to a boil and simmer 10 minutes. Add pasta and peas and cook another 7 minutes or until pasta is just cooked. Season with salt and pepper. Makes 4-6 servings

It is very much the easiest one to accidentally cause oneself irreversible harm.

Fun story: my co-namesake (friend of my mother’s growing up) actually sang in Cats on Broadway (Griselda, who sang Memory). I have a photo with her backstage during intermission, with her in full makeup.

This is a fun story. A friend of mine was the narrator of Lloyd Webber’s “Starlight Express” — singing trains on roller skates! — on Broadway for its first three or four years. She didn’t have to spend hours in makeup or get into costume or even appear on stage; she just talked into a microphone. After her contract ran out, she didn’t get another B’way gig for several years, but with what she earned from that one show she bought her midtown Manhattan condo.

James Woods supposedly has a high IQ. He is a great example of how high IQ doesn’t protect you from illogical thinking and motivated reasoning.

Being more intelligent prolly does lessen the probability of that, but if an intelligent person is dumb after all - then they’re seriously dumb, coz all their brain power is used to justify dumb things (like conspiracy theories). Sorta like having a powerful processor but no antivirus (on Win) means the viruses are gonna multiply faster, is all.

That’s great for your co-namesake. I occasionally perform a magic act with rings and ropes, a parody of a born again Christian magician with a lot of S&M double entendres, and though I’ve honed and pared the act down for many years (I’m a big believer in performing a magic trick in as short a time as possible — the opposite of the Spanish school of conjuring btw, they like to tell long elaborate stories, and many of them are brilliant at that, but I digress) and have practiced it until I can do it backwards and sideways, each time I get up to perform it in front of people I’m scared shitless. Orson Welles said a magician is an actor playing the part of a magician, and he was totally right about that.

I guess what I’m saying is, in order to act in front of people I need a gimmick, and magic is mine. (Another Welles quote I can totally relate to: “Not one of my friends has ever asked me to do a magic trick.”)

That matches the research. Intelligent people are supremely confident in their intelligence so find it harder to accept a debunking of their own rationalizations.

Greetz from historic Valley Forge, PA! The lovely wife and I are here to do a hang with my family for the weekend. I’m glad we’re no longer in the truck, because NYC news radio milked the living crap out of the fact that the wake for one of the slain cops happened today.

Also, Scout is taking up way too much of the bed. For a small dog, he sure takes up a lot of space.

Okay that sounds really good. I had been checking them out online anyway, so great to have first hand rec. Gives us a good goal for where to sleep. What I like is the option play we get northbound depending on weather and muse. Turn left and go to the mountains turn right and that desert awaits.

Going for that early light in the cold is always an adventure.

When I think of bowling alleys, I always think of french fries. The Air Force bases I grew up on always had a bowling alley with a grill that served french fries. The smell wafted o’er the lanes. Hot damn, I could go for some fries right now.

We did Bishop 3 years ago, just a bit before New Year’s. We ended up at the local bar one evening for drinks and got to watch some nice games before they had their Bling Contest. Since I was female, I got roped into it.

Somewhere, I have a certificate for my second-place finish. It was the toe rings that got me that far.

Then we drove over Sonora Pass on Dec. 31, which is all kinds of wrong.
