Do any of the cops who participated in this ugly public tantrum understand how crass and unsympathetic it makes them look? Police Outside Cop Funeral Turn Backs on NYC Mayor.

NEW YORK (AP) — Hundreds of officers outside the church where a funeral was held for a policeman killed along with his partner in an ambush shooting turned their backs on the mayor as he spoke during Saturday’s service.

Petulance masquerading as principle.

To be fair, they were showing their asses to us long before the non-indictment came in.

4 unproven innocence  Dec 27, 2014 11:21:21am

Obliviously, they don’t give a shit about the optics.

5 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD  Dec 27, 2014 11:24:00am

They’ve shown disrespect to their fallen comrades.

6 lawhawk  Dec 27, 2014 11:24:18am

This isn’t about optics or that many New Yorkers will see the NYPD acting as petulant and disrespectful of the Mayor who governs the entire city, not just malcontents at the PBA.

This is about trying to force the mayor to concede higher wages in ongoing contract talks. They think this confrontational style will somehow yield concessions by the mayor on the latest round of talks.

7 Targetpractice  Dec 27, 2014 11:24:27am

And this, of course, after the mayor asked that all protests be put on hold out of respect for the fallen officers. So this is not simply a petty display, it’s a disrespectful one.

They know they probably have a floor of support from those who believe the police can do no wrong, bolstered by support from those who believe the police can do no wrong (long as its done to the Blahs and brown folks).

Nick Searcy thinks he’s famous because Adam Baldwin knows who he is. Chew on that for a second.

Timothy Olyphant, Walton Goggins, based on characters from Elmore Leonard:
en.wikipedia.org

18 Timothy Watson  Dec 27, 2014 11:49:44am

Interesting thing is that Goggins is pretty liberal:

GOGGINS: On some level, but I never believed that Boyd Crowder was a white supremacist, to be quite honest with you. In my conversations with both the network and with Graham Yost, our executive producer, and Tim Olyphant, it was very important for me as an actor not to play this guy as a white supremacist but to play him as a bit of a svengali: a person who doesn’t necessarily believe all that he espouses.

You know, I’ve made four Southern movies. I’ve been in quite a few Southern films. And initially, when this was sent to me, I wasn’t interested in playing another Southern guy labeled as a racist.

You know, I think racism is a problem throughout our country, and it’s not confined to those states below the Mason-Dixon line. And for me, I did not want to perpetuate a stereotype. So I had them take out references to our president, Barack Obama, and I wouldn’t say the N-word, and I said I would do this if Raylan was able to point out that Boyd doesn’t necessarily believe that which he is saying, and that was very important to me.

[…]

GROSS: What was it like to, like, have a swastika tattoo and, you know, spout all that Christian Identity religion stuff? I mean, the Christian Identity movement that believes Jews are the mud people.

GOGGINS: Yeah, it was - you know, honestly, it was awful. It really was. A lot of my friends at FX are - one gentleman in particular, Eric Schrier, is Jewish, and we did a table reading of this script. And I had to say that monologue and immediately after felt like I had to say: I’m sorry. I don’t believe any of this. Everyone in the room, I have - my best friends are Jewish.

It was - no, it was really - it’s difficult, and it’s difficult to have a swastika on your arm, you know. And I actually wore it home. I didn’t let them take it off. So I kept it with me during the process of filming the pilot episode. And there were…

Also:

As far as politics are concerned Walton has been active in the Democratic Party, and in the 2008 presidential election, he campaigned for Senator Barack Obama, going door-to-door in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles. He is also known to be a fan of the work of former President Jimmy Carter (from his home state of Georgia). He is also active in various non-profit organizations that range from environmental to humanitarian work. He is a regular at GLOBAL GREEN USA events and activities. He connected to environmental issues through his wife, Nadia Conners, who directed the documentary The 11th Hour about the environmental crisis.

22 Sophist -- Missouri Goddamn  Dec 27, 2014 11:55:00am

The way the deaths of these officers are being exploited is so crass and cynical it makes me sick. The mayor has nothing to do with them, and everyone involved fucking knows it. But they want extra leverage in their negotiations and an excuse to stop talking about inconvenient dead black people, so here we are.

Disgusting. Absolutely and abjectly disgusting.

Known for this TV trope:

“…The Cowboy Cop’s eternally put-upon superior. Always strict and by-the-book. Can be comfortably relied upon to give a good McCloud Speech, say that You Have 48 Hours or demand that you Turn in Your Badge, usually at the top of his formidable voice. Frequently worried that the mayor or district attorney will have his ass (and pension) for whatever destruction was caused. Will occasionally prove to have a heart by giving his men an inspirational speech. Can frequently be relied on to be the police department equivalent of A Father to His Men.”

28 ObserverArt  Dec 27, 2014 12:06:05pm

In the previous page Targetpractice had posted:

That’s the current argument, that by not kissing the NYPD’s ass, De Blasio promoted “police hatred.”

I commented (and it fits this thread):

If you ask me (and nobody does!) that argument is just a tool to excuse the police acts and the real hatred for people of color.

De Blasio is just a crucible to channel the hate for the real target…black people that are causing all these problems for the police. If ‘they’ just didn’t act up all the time, then the police wouldn’t be getting so frustrated and going too far. ‘They’ bring it all on themselves and De Blasio is excusing it and blaming the police.

De Blasio might just as well be a Black man. Right now he is a stand in. The police are turning their backs on people of color and those that are in support. They are turning their backs on all of us.

I missed a new thread had opened. Sorry.

Again - a threat, not a statement. If. NYPD didn’t have the uniform, they’d be common extortionists and the NYPD would arrest them.

(OT) Unless the clips are very large (as for a car battery), a bit of solder applied with a 30-40W soldering pencil is ideal. For a massive clip you may need a torch or a bigger soldering tool. For attachment without solder, clips typically are made with “fold-down” tabs that you can mash onto wires using pliers.

Just back from Urgent Care. Kid and I both have Sinus Infections —secondary to the Flu. We are over the flu for the most part. Both of us got Prednisone and …

Doc felt his body was doing a good job of fighting the infection and said he should take antibiotics in 48 hours if he felt better.

Me, I definitely need antibiotics right now. Augmentin -higher dose.

Yes, welcome to my world. A life time of chronic sinusitis, allergies and sinus infections. I’m very happy about the Prednisone. It is soooo helpful. Doctors often don’t want to prescribe it.

If you’re looking to push some amperage across them then you might be better off taking a look at Mueller Electric. They invented the alligator clip and they have a huge selection rated by type, amperage, connection, etc. The cheapo ones will fry pretty easily if you push much current acoss them.

Watching old episodes of Roseanne and I don’t know who remembers, but she had that one daughter to was dating that one really douchey guy. Who I supposed to be a “rebel” I guess.

Man, I’m feeling like an old lady right now cause I can’t bring myself to even laugh at the episode cause the guy was so disrepectful to the Conners and don’t even get me started on the daughter…ugh.

I know, I know, it’s a tv show, but geez, I had the same problem with the last Transformers movie with Mark Walhberg (among other problems). Mark played the father of the hot chick-Megan Fox-replacment. The boyfriend in that movie just was so disrepectful to the father of his girlfriend, that I swear, it pissed me off more than the crappiness of the movie itself.

Ugh, does that mean I’m becoming that old “get off my lawn” person? Shoot I”m only 38 and not 40 YET!

Make sure there is no way you can accidentally view the propaganda.

Yes.

I’ve found that when young people (or anyone considered less-than) speaks frankly and honestly to an older person, it is considered disrespect or worse (eeek) a challenge.

No, it’s that young people finally have the freedom to be themselves.

If they swear or use body language that bothers you, call them on it. There is no reason each side cannot set boundries for communications. It’s part of being an adult.

IMHO, it’s the adult’s job to mentor young people on this stuff.

I guess I don’t have the right to demand respect simply because of my age. I work to earn it especially from younger people.

As I said earlier, I will need people to bring me chocolate in the Nursing Home.
