What Did Mayor De Blasio Say to Get the NYPD So Angry?

They can’t handle the truth
US News • Views: 46,662

With the remarkable disrespect shown to New York’s Mayor de Blasio by the NYPD recently, it’s instructive to go back and reread what de Blasio said that sent New York’s finest into such paroxysms of rage. Via Michael Tomasky:

This is profoundly personal for me. I was at the White House the other day, and the president of the United States turned to me, and he met Dante a few months ago, and he said that Dante reminded him of what he looked like as a teenager. And he said, I know you see this crisis through a very personal lens. I said to him I did. Because Chirlane and I have had to talk to Dante for years, about the dangers he may face. A good young man, a law-abiding young man, who would never think to do anything wrong, and yet, because of a history that still hangs over us, the dangers he may face—we’ve had to literally train him, as families have all over this city for decades, in how to take special care in any encounter he has with the police officers who are there to protect him.

That’s it, folks; the cause of all this anger and disrespect.

He told black people everywhere to hate cops, to taunt them, provoke them to acts of violence and then act like helpless victims! That’s what he did!

Being “politically incorrect” about minorities is “free speech”, but utter something slightly critical about the cops or the troops and you’re a traitor, commie, no-good scum.

And BTW, no, he did not call all cops racists. He only indicated that there are enough cops with anti-black prejudice for black teens to walk on eggshells near all cops, so as not to take chances. That reflects the reality, that doesn’t mean all or even most cops are racists.

There is no truth but what falls from the lips of those you choose to hear. Symptomatic and with the 24/7 rage machine in full throat, you have to wonder. Or be ashamed.

As lawhawk has noted time and again, this have nothing to do with “disrespect” shown to the NYPD and everything to do with their trying to twist De Blasio’s arm at the bargaining table over pay raises. Trying to convince him that, to get in their good graces and call off the dogs, he has to be willing to agree to whatever terms they name.

What Did Mayor De Blasio Say to Get the NYPD So Angry?
Possibly, “My kid is black.”

Naww, that’s just nuts.

If e.g. 1 in 10 cops is racist (and does anybody believe the percentage is lower?), why would one want to take chances? Then 90% of cops are still not racist, so there is no offense. Or are we to suppose that 100% of cops are pure as snow?

If I was employed with NYPD, I’d be looking to work somewhere else as of this morning.
I just can’t imagine having to go to work every day in that kind of toxic psychological environment.

A repeat from downstairs.

It’s hard to say. There are times when it’s obvious she’s feeling better, then 1/2 hour later she’s feeling crappy again.

I think dealing with the infection helped both physically and emotionally, but her nausea is still a problem. Add to that the nausea when she gets a whiff of the infection and it becomes a consistent problem.

I’d say the times she feels better are increasing in length though so there is improvement.

Thanks for caring. All of you.

One of the problems there may be they only attract people that thrive in the environment. Which is what many people are fearful is really happening.

If that is the case, then the greater number of NYPD are totally in favor of the whole reaction. So, yes you are right…it weeds out the good making the problem worse and worse. And that weeding may have gone on long before now. This is the result.

If the numbers were in favor of really sensible police not happy with how they are being seen then this crap would be changing and there would be no histrionics by union chiefs and back turning. In fact those doing so would be not going into work in the morning.

First candidate for ‘16 that comes out for #NYPD will be president.

I’d wager there are a significant number of people who are going to vote against whatever candidate does what upchuck suggests. That candidate will get at least 27 percent of the vote, however.

What is happening in NY with Mayor DeBlasio is not new, if you’re a member of a minority group—Hispanic/Latino, Black, LGBTQ, Muslim, etc. It has been happening for a very long time. The problem is that those in positions of power and influence have ignored what is happening before their very eyes, and now the fact that all Americans aren’t being treated the same are coming into focus and in the national spotlight, they are very upset. They don’t want to, and will not, acknowledge that the problem exists and is a blight on the very principles they say are the bedrock of what this nation stands for. They want the problem to go away and will do everything within their power to maintain the status quo. What they fail to note is that things are changing and some of us will no longer tolerate having other Americans gunned down in our streets or discriminated against for no reason other than their race, sexual orientation, religion, etc. Sure, it’s upsetting to the keepers of the status quo, and they have two choices—-work with us to address and rectify the problems or continue to hear from us. They will be forced eventually to change the way our police departments operate and to change their way of thinking about members of minority groups, even though it’s not their preferred option. If they want us to cease and desist from making our displeasure known, it is their only option.

The NYPD and others are upset with Mayor DeBlasio because he’s telling the truth, and what upsets them most is that he’s a white man and father of a biracial son who has the courage to say in public what needs/must be said. Kudos to Mayor DeBlasio for telling the truth because, for far too long, many in the nation have denied that problems of this sort exist when they most definitely do.

Help! When people post tweets in non-English languages in hopes of illustrating a point, would you please provide a translation for those of us who don’t speak/read those languages? I realize this takes a little more time for you, but imagine the amount of time it saves for the rest of the Lizardem who’d have to look it up on Google translate to (hopefully) get the correct meaning?

Thanks. If not, no worries.

Edit: that wasn’t specifically directed at you, btw. I saw someone earlier post a couple of tweets in other languages earlier today and had similar thoughts.

I too had a conversation with my teen aged son about how to behave when pulled over by the police. I had the same conversation with my daughter. Be respectful. Do not argue. Do not claim innocence. Do nothing to make his job any more difficult. Remember that he/she is alone and probably at least nervous about approaching your car. Around here, cops usually get gunned down while approaching a vehicle by meth head or a white supremacist.

PS Just take the ticket. Do not admit guilt. Do not make causal conversation. Do not give permission to search the vehicle.

Maybe I live in another world, but I have never been cited for a violation I did not commit, nor do I know anyone who has.

We do not stop. We slow down, we put on our emergency flashers, we drive to the nearest well-lit and populated area…preferably a police station but a truck stop will do.
In the meantime, we call 9-1-1 on the cellphone (fingers crossed there is cell service) and explain what we are doing.

The most dangerous thing in this country is somebody who genuinely thinks they aren’t racist.

Everyone is racist, or at least has some degree of prejudice that guide their reactions to situations in ways that are often hidden even to themselves. It’s just past fucking experience, the people around us, the expectations and built in filters we all have. That’s how societal and institutional racism stick around. It’s the mold in the grout, the low level, usually asymptomatic infection. It’s why people react differently to the white male and female bike thief than they do to the black one, without even realizing that they are reacting differently. The person who knows this can maybe confront those reactions in the moment, or at least be shown and realize it after the fact.

But the person who genuinely, adamantly believes they aren’t racist, or worst yet, sees themselves as a “race realist.” There isn’t a goddamned thing you can do to get them to see reality, because they’ve build their entire self-identity around not seeing it.

It probably helps the cop cause that arch-hater Sean Hannity has routinely called DeBlasio a communist for a couple of years now. Hannity cannot mention DeBlasio without off-handedly referring to him as “the communist mayor,” in the exact tone one would use to refer to the “Republican mayor” or the “Democratic mayor,” as though the affiliation were simply a background fact.
In real life, of course, a huckster like Hannity wouldn’t know a communist if one jumped out and bit him on the arse.

You’re white. There’s a flip side to this however. You might have always been pulled over for shit you did, but white people also get away with some seriously shady shit because a cop’s mental radar wasn’t tuned to see them as worth investigating further.

Be nice if we could get a thing going to only refer to him as the “Fascist Commentator On Fox”.

89 Shiplord Kirel  Dec 27, 2014 6:21:47pm

More fallout from recent events: The police (meaning non-federal law enforcement in general) are winning back a lot of the right wing support they had lost to gun-humper and sovereign citizen conspiracy-mongers during the last few years. The cop-hater contingent at free republic has been shouted down in recent weeks, for example. Or perhaps they have been persuaded to honestly re-appraise their position in recognition of a common value, the hatred of uppity ni(CLANGS!). In any case, we have finally found something the kooks care about more than their guns.

Just wait for the cops to start pushing Gun Control explicitly again. Because it makes them safer like in other nations where only the police have guns. The cognitive dissonance will be amusing

Gah, another law and order campaign? We are fools.

We will see a resurrected “law and order” slogan replace “jack-booted thugs” in the gun humper narrative. I expect the NRA to re-issue its famous “Support Your Local Police” bumper stickers any time now and we will see them on pickups and SUVs from coast to coast.

Interestingly, heard on NPR that the NYPD was modeled after the London PD in many ways. They wear blue because LPD wore blue so they wouldn’t be confused with the red coats (Army). And yet, is it still true that the LPD doesn’t, generally, carry guns?

While I missed you ladies and gentlemen (and I use that latter term in only the most general meaning possible), it was nice to have a week away from spittle flecked screaming at my computer because of things like upChuck.

The area where my Dad is, Port Charlotte (about 100 miles south of Tampa), is very conservative. He loves to read the letters to the editor in the local paper, just so that he can call them idiots and, if I remember his term correctly, Geriatric Fascists with AARP Cards.

I’m going to crash out here really soon, long day with flight delays due apparently to an ATC issue. Here’s a short video I tossed together really quickly, I’ll get a better one up with a bit better color balance and some backing tracks once I get a chance.

Enjoy…

re: #60 #FergusonFireside

All of the police industry needs overhaul. NYPD? Bad. Imagine bumfuck Arkansas. Or as we’ve seen, Ferguson MO.

Rotted. Rotted. Rotted.

It ain’t no where perfect, but Nashville is such a strange town:

Nashville Metro Chief of Police Steve Anderson’s response to an email complaining about the demonstrations in Nashville in support of Ferguson, MO:

• “These actions are putting the department at disharmony from the majority of the citizens.”

While I don’t doubt that you sincerely believe that your thoughts represent the majority of citizens, I would ask you to consider the following before you chisel those thoughts in stone.

As imperfect humans, we have a tendency to limit our association with other persons to those persons who are most like us. Unfortunately, there is even more of a human tendency to stay within our comfort zone by further narrowing those associations to those persons who share our thoughts and opinions. By doing this we can avoid giving consideration to thoughts and ideas different than our own.

This would make us uncomfortable. By considering only the thoughts and ideas we are in agreement with, we stay in our comfort zone. Our own biases get reinforced and reflected back at us leaving no room for any opinion but our own. By doing this, we often convince ourselves that the majority of the world shares opinion and that anyone with another opinion is, obviously, wrong.

It is only when we go outside that comfort zone, and subject ourselves to the discomfort of considering thoughts we don’t agree with, that we can make an informed judgment on any matter. We can still disagree and maintain our opinions, but we can now do so knowing that the issue has been given consideration from all four sides. Or, if we truly give fair consideration to all points of view, we may need to swallow our pride and amend our original thoughts.

And, it is only by giving consideration to the thoughts of all persons, even those that disagree with us, that we can have an understanding as to what constitutes a majority.
