World • Views: 38,803

Bad news from Southeast Asia, where another passenger plane has suddenly gone missing.

An AirAsia flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday, Indonesian media said, citing a transport ministry official.

Transport ministry official Hadi Mustofa said the aircraft, flight number QZ 8501, lost contact with the Jakarta air traffic control tower at 6.17am local time. (2317 GMT).

The aricraft was said to be an Airbus 320-200 with 155 people on board.

He said the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact.

Me: “There’s a plane missing from Indonesia to Singapore”

Wife, walking into room from downstairs: “Oh, it’s probably in [6 year old son]’s room. Everything else seems to have gone missing up there.”

This comes after a report that 2014 was one of the safest years for flying.

The risks of mankind’s push to expand flight frontiers were driven home in October when British billionaire Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic spaceship — intended to take tourists to the edge of space — broke up on a test flight, killing a pilot.

Accidents at record low

Ironically, however, 2014 continued a long-term trend of ever improving air safety.

A record-low seven fatal commercial passenger incidents occurred as of last week, according to the Netherlands-based Aviation Safety Network, an infinitesimal figure amid the several million flights and billions of passengers each year.

The grim reaper is setting his score straight. Still, you would not know this but there was a staggering ammount of accidents this year
,albeit most of them non fatal or single digits.

At least a few freepers think it is suspicious, or ominous, or something that President Obama is in Hawaii, allegedly just like he was when MH-370 disappeared.

Was President Obama ‘on vacation’ in Hawaii the last time this happened? Just asking. I’m starting to think these people are being held captive somewhere, maybe sold to the Saudi’s as indentured servants.

A response and endorsement:

“You’re right. Very strange that he’s in Hawaii just like last time Indonesian (Muslims) hijacked a plane.”

That was 1981 in the real world but certain freepers take it for granted that all such incidents are actually hijackings, probably carried out with the collusion of the Indonesian Muslim Obama.

I wish I were making this up.

Morning, all. I’m seeing unconfirmed reports that wreckage has been spotted in the waters off East Belitung, which jibes with this snippet:

An aircraft has reportedly crashed off the east coast of Sumatera, in the waters of East Belitung. This report came after authorities confirmed that AirAsia Flight QZ8501 went missing earlier today. An Indonesian news portal Bangka Pos had quoted an official from H.A.S Hanandjoeddin Tanjungpandan Airport in Indonesia, Suparno, said the exact location of the crash site has not been identified. The portal also reported that the Indonesian national search and rescue agency (Basarnas) team from Bangka Belitung were heading to East Belitung waters. “We will immediately head to East Belitung by sea,” said Basarnas Commander Joni Superiadi to Bangka Pos. The AirAsia flight QZ8501 was scheduled to arrive at 8.30am in Singapore from Surabaya, Indonesia, when the Jakarta Air Traffic Control lost contact at 7.54am.

I’ve been following that; not good. A fire on a ship at sea - not to mention a stormy sea - is never a good thing, much like the MS Scandinavian Star disaster. That particular case, which left 159 dead, turned out to be arson. No one was ever brought to justice for it, and someone’s walking around there as a mass murderer.

ETA: It’s suspected by investigators that the MS Scandinavian Star disaster was a matter of insurance fraud - the vessel was insured for twice what it was worth.

Never bring a sword to a gunfight

A Loudonville man faces charges after an encounter Friday night with State Police in which he was shot after allegedly threatening to kill cops with an AK-47 and later raising a sword at a trooper.

State Police say the incident began when Michael Messina, 19, threw an energy drink container and other debris from his car at a trooper who had pulled over a motorist in the southbound lanes of the Northway in Halfmoon at 6:40 p.m. Friday.

He then fled the vehicle and tried to make his getaway on foot while toting a sword that State Police said was used in the liquor store robbery. After wading through a four-foot-deep stream, Messina allegedly turned and raised the sword toward the trooper who was behind him. The trooper shot Messina once in the abdomen, authorities said.

In most cases the immediate (and, as we now know, deceptive) choice was not between “be murdered or die in a gun battle with your whole family”. It was, as far as most Jews were concerned, “be deported to a far away labor camp with a vague chance of survival or die in a gun battle with your whole family”. When there’s deception involved, guns are not of that much use.

The storms in the path of that flight, with hail, lightning, severe turbulence and thunderstorms reaching as high as 50,000 feet, had nothing to do with the pilot’s request for a diversion from his flight path and could not in any way have damaged the aircraft. Such storms never affected aviation before January, 2009.

State television has continued to broadcast monotonously upbeat, if factually inaccurate, news. From watching a few morning programs, I learned that the U.S. economy was in trouble, all the more so because falling oil prices threatened America’s newfound status as an oil power; that anyone who wants quality fruit for New Year’s should buy Russian; and that Russia’s neighbors Kazakhstan and Belarus were coming out in support of Russia in the Ukrainian conflict. In reality, of course, the opposite is true.

Dangerous shit in the mountains. When it builds on a snowpack it’s called surface hoar…then new snow falls on it and it becomes depth hoar - a weak layer (just a centimeter thick is enough) on which the new snow rests. Then, with the right trigger, that whole slab falls.

The “88” in the address is a nice touch (skinhead pseudo-code for “heil Hitler”).

Horrific Racist Song at Charity Event
‘And He’s Dead, Dead Michael Brown’ [VIDEO]

The Glendale, CA Elks Lodge is investigating a shocking incident that went down in the club a week ago Monday, when a performer sang a song celebrating the death of Michael Brown … for an audience that included a number of retired and current cops … and TMZ has the video.

The song was a parody of “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.” Gary Fishell, the performer and a member of the Lodge, changed the lyrics, which include:

[SNIP, because I’m not posting Fishell’s sick-in-the-head-lyrics here]

The event was the capper for a charity golf event, thrown by retired LAPD Officer Joe Myers, a 32 year veteran who left the force in 2007. We’re told 50-60 people attended the dinner, and about half were cops, most of whom were retired. The others were civilians.

Singer Gary Fishell is a P.I. who once worked as an investigator for the Federal Government. His lawyer tells TMZ, Fishell now realizes the song was “off color and in poor taste.” The lawyer adds, “He’s a goofball who writes funny songs.” We asked why Fishell would sing this in a room full of cops, and the lawyer replied, “He thought the room would get a kick out of it.”

Bolding mine.

The rot in the LAPD runs deep.

Let me know if this one needs to be Paged.

Having been a tanker, I know how a person like that can threaten a tank. But if you have a disciplined crew, unsupported infantry is not going to do much. Air support or HE? Different story. But a soldier with a rifle? Or even the proverbial molitov? Well, there’s a reason we called infantry “crunchies”…

Even without overpressure, just keep going and ~90% of the time they’ll burn out without harm to the crew. The real killer is panic… the “mind killer” as Frank Herbert called it.

Fun factoid: In Amateur (Ham) Radio, “88” has for many decades meant “love and kisses” when signing off a Morse Code conversation, much like “73” = “good bye/best wishes” and “33” = “good bye/best wishes” for female to female ham radio operators.
All of those Morse Code sign-offs moved over to SSB conversations as well.

Wow! At least one police chief has the right idea:
Police Chief: Respecting Authority Means Respecting Protestors

When a pro-cop citizen wrote the Nashville Police to express his “frustration and outrage” at the city’s peaceful handling of recent Ferguson protests, Chief Steve Anderson reminded the letter-writer of a simple fact: “The police are merely a representative of a government formed by the people for the people—for all people.”

In his point-by-point response— published online Friday and reproduced in full below—Anderson explained why police in Nashville served demonstrators hot chocolate instead of threatening them with arrest, urging the unnamed critic to “truly give fair consideration to all points of view.”

“[C]omparing the outcome here in Nashville with what has occurred in some other cities,” wrote Anderson, “the results speak for themselves.”
