Speaking of CCJ’s crack publishing skills, his site has a screenshot of a photo of a newspaper clipping of an open letter printed in 1986 in the Columbia University Spectator. He was crowing that de Blasio had signed the letter opposing the Star Wars defense initiative.

Well, I found the same article at the Spectator website, downloaded the PDF, opened it up in Photoshop, and saved the entire image as a PNG. And here it is:
NYC mayor de Blasio’s name amongst a sea of others

CCJ carefully (haha!) cropped his image to leave off the hundreds of names below the open letter’s text. De Blasio was a grad student at the time, and signing such a letter is really no big deal.

As for de Blasio’s father’s acceptance of appeasement, I noted he took part in a college debate on the issue in ‘38. If it were like most academic debates, he could have been arguing a position he did not personally believe in, because that’s how debates work. Only UpChuck would make a stink about a college student’s debate performance from nearly 80 years ago.

Check out both stories at gotnwes.com, now with a new look! I’d have liked to copy UpChuck’s site’s layout, but he paid real money ($100) for the WordPress theme he uses. I’m not interested in spending that much money on him.

CNN has a BREAKING NEWS banner on TV right now that says that the AirAsia Flight 8501 has now been missing for about 28 hours.

The real meaning of “breaking news” has been lost. It’s supposed to refer to something immediately in the past, not something that’s been ongoing for hours. Finding the plane would be breaking news.

CNN and various bloggers who shall remain unnamed have demeaned the meaning of the word.

I’m surprised Hobby Lobby doesn’t have Chick-Fil-As.

I don’t know if it’s intentional but around here the wingnut businesses are sometimes grouped together, like whoever owned the land sold development based on politics. Near my job there’s a Hobby Lobby, Wal-Mart, and Chick-fil-A in one connected lot. I’m surprised nobody’s added a church yet.

Granted this is north Texas, so I can’t escape, but even in the land of Footberl and Jeebus it’s a little unusual to have a cluster like that.

I find it interesting that for an entire week, during Lynch ‘s hateful rant and hate radio and Murdoch’s media empire going completely nuts, Ghouliani and Bratton remained silent - but both went on ‘Meet the Press’ this morning and said Di Blasio shouldn’t be blamed for the deaths of the two cops.

I wondered, why today? Then I thought of the venue - a network news program that ostensibly sane people tune into. They acted reasonable today after standing quiet and letting the hate build all week.

Fucking weasels.

Noun verb 911 wasn’t exactly silent last week:

“We’ve had four months of propaganda, starting with the president, that everybody should hate the police.”

— Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, FOX News Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014

“When you start doing this stuff that the [New York] mayor [Bill de Blasio] is doing, the president is doing, the attorney general is doing, they are perpetuating a myth that there is systemic police brutality.

Hope I’m not quoting too much…

Twitty is particularly incensed by privileged young whites who make cultural capital out of the black heritage. “These people are trying to ape or appropriate the culture, and it’s very bizarre. We are good enough to be culturally robbed, but we are not good enough to be your neighbor, your friends?” he says. “They can take our words, our songs, our food, and run rampant with it all, yet have no meaningful relationship, have no political or socio-cultural connection to us.”

He is referring to a recent Facebook furor that erupted when the identity of the authors of a vegan cooking blog and book, “Thug Kitchen,” was revealed. Michelle Davis and Matt Holloway, two young white people from Hollywood, achieved celebrity status in the realm of vegan cooking thanks to their hyperactive use of street lingo and juicy profanity identified with young blacks in America’s urban ghettos. But when their identity became known, the social networks in the United States were flooded with angry statuses, tweets, opinion pieces and manifestos about cultural theft and inequality.

“There is a fine line between appropriation and respect,” Twitty observes. “I think that you can definitely borrow with respect and keep things in balance. But there is also mockery, a joke, and they are rewarded for it. How were they planning to keep up the masquerade? How long were they planning to keep up the joke? It boggles the mind.”

208 William Barnett-Lewis  Dec 28, 2014 10:41:01pm

Interesting new Wiki articles on the Sigma Wargames run by the Pentagon in the 1960’s. The Sigma I-63 wargame forcast the results of an intervention in Vietnam as:

Sigma I-63 was played in Spring 1963. It was held with senior level officials setting policy for the Red and Blue Teams. Working level officials were the actual players.[2]

Ambassador William H. Sullivan was a participant. His recollection is that Sigma I-63 ended in a fictional 1970 with 500,000 American troops locked in a stalemate in Vietnam, and conscription riots in the United States.[2]

The games in 64, 65 & so on didn’t get any more rosy. Sigma II-64 even predicted accurately that heavy use of air power would only stiffen the resolve of the North Vietnamese.

Sad how reality can be right there in our face yet we refuse to accept it…

Silverton Mountain is chairlift heli-skiing with a heli. The base lodge is a tent with a wood-burning stove and seats from an old school bus for, uh, seats. Oh, and plenty of Durango, CO (where I was born) grog on tap. The ski rental shop is a hollowed out school bus (where the seats came from in the main “lodge”) where you can get fat rockered skis, backpacks, beacons, shovels, probes, all for rent.

Silverton Mountain requires a backpack, avalanche beacon, shovel, and avalanche probe to board their chairlift. Only ski area I know of with this policy.

Looks like the Eurozone crisis may be getting ready to flare up again.

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras faces a vote in parliament on Monday that will decide whether the country goes to snap elections that could bring the leftwing Syriza party to power and derail an international bailout.

In the most hotly contested vote for president since Greece joined the euro more than a decade ago, the result in the final round of voting is likely to be decided by a small handful of deputies.

If lawmakers fail to elect a successor to 85-year-old Karolos Papoulias, a snap election will be held within weeks. Syriza, leading in the opinion polls, vowed again to renegotiate the joint European Union-IMF bailout bailout Greece needs to pay its bills and roll over its debt.

Recent polls have shown Syriza has kept its lead over the ruling centre-right New Democracy party but the advantage has narrowed steadily over the past few weeks and Samaras said on Saturday he was confident of winning any election.

A poll on Saturday by the Alco institute showed Syriza leading New Democracy by 3.3 points, a slightly narrower lead than in the previous poll. It put support for Syriza at 28.3 percent and for New Democracy at 25 percent.

ekathimerini.com

Results should be known in about 40 minutes or so, according to the article.

He published the Montague Avenue, Brooklyn, eatery’s phone on Twitter, and for no apparent reason has a list of robberies and attempted robberies of various Chipotle’s restaurants around the nation, crowd sourced from his loyal minions. Chuckles always wants there to be something bigger, some connection to the dreadful forces of Transnational Progressivism. In this case, the whole thing is ultimately just about one employee acting unprofessionally1 but Chuckles wants the story to be bigger2 so he climbs ever higher into the branches of the Stupid Tree.

Notes:

1. I say ‘unprofessional’, because doing a ‘hands-up’ protest gesture to a police officer who is a customer while at work is unprofessional and inappropriate IMO. When you’re at work in a customer facing position, your job is to help the customers, not criticize them.

2. It occurs to me that the Chipotle employee in question must either be male or their gender is unknown to Chuckles. If he found the employee was a woman, he’d simply dox and harass her as per his shitty SOP. Incorrect info deleted.

UpChuck’s line is this:

Unexamined is how Chipotle’s unwelcoming anti-law enforcement and Second Amendment policies actually affect employee and customer safety.

Indeed, the burrito chain has a long history of robberies and violent theft that makes its anti-Second Amendment and law enforcement policies tenuous at best.

Maybe if Chipotle were nicer to the police and citizens carrying guns they wouldn’t get robbed so often.

re: #255 wheat-dogghazi-bola-trality

That’s a bullshit story, I’m afraid.

She didn’t suggest that the difference in measurements is responsible. It was an example of what is different between the US and the rest of the world. It was an introduction to the question: maybe the pilots there are also trained differently? Granted, the analogy isn’t genius, but there was no suggestion that the metric system is responsible.

If you watch the video, she starts with the difference in training. Moreover, she knew beforehand what the “AFA insider” would be talking about. So from the start it was his point about different training, not hers. She was just paving the road for his answer.

Then during the phone call at first she gives a general example: “even when we think about temperature, it’s Celsius and Fahrenheit”, and so on. It’s her example of what is different between different countries. Then she asks whether difference in training (not in measuring systems) might have been responsible. And he understands her perfectly and answers her pre-arranged question with “Correct”.

There is never any implication of causality on the part of the measuring systems.

Putin’s Holiday Gift Is a Paranoid New Military Doctrine

Russia’s updated doctrine singles out NATO, unpatriotic kids

The most consequential part of the doctrine refers to Russia’s aim to protect its citizens abroad.

This is through the “lawful use of the armed forces … to ensure the protection of its citizens, outside the Russian Federation in accordance with the generally recognized principles and norms of international law and international treaties of the Russian Federation.”

This is not controversial on its own, but it gives sufficient wiggle room for Russian troops to intervene in other countries on behalf of Russian passport holders.

Several border states have substantial Russian-speaking minorities. That has the Baltic states worried, as protecting Russian citizens was the Kremlin’s principle justification for invading Crimea—and backing the breakaway statelets of South Ossetia and Abkhazia during the 2008 war with Georgia.

SNIP

But the doctrine goes further. Another military threat is propaganda aimed at influencing “young citizens of the country, which is to undermine the historical, spiritual and patriotic traditions in defense of the Fatherland,” the doctrine states.

That’s a foreboding sign.

Youth protesters are a threat to national security. If Russian citizens are not religious, then the country is weak. Russia is facing a civilizational threat from the West. That’s not just the fever dreams of paranoid nationalists — that’s all in the doctrine.

If the NYPD pulled this kind of stunt while Rudy was in office - a personal attack on Rudy himself for taking a principled position (namely that police do racially profile and that people of color are affected disproportionately, just like DeBlasio’s son is a person of color), Rudy would demand heads on a platter. He didn’t tolerate any dissent. He got rid of Bratton because Bratton got more credit for crime reduction strategies than the mayor did.

He replaced Bratton with Safir and then Kerik. And even then, it was always about Rudy seeking and demanding credit for improvements in crime over that of the department and the people who run it.

re: #297 Snarknado!

True, but nothing new. The last senior cleric who went against the government was probably Metropolitan Phillip, and that was 1568.

The ROC also thoroughly collaborated with the Soviet regime, the whole Church elite consisted of KGB agents (incl. of course the current Patriarch). Because you tweeted ‘Benghazi’:

Libya’s largest oil port ablaze after rebels launch rocket strikes amid warnings the country could descend into chaos

Islamic militants have fired rockets from speedboats at Libya’s largest port in an attempt to seize control of the fiercely contested resource amid warnings the country is descending into chaos like that in Syria.

Last night a rocket set three storage tanks ablaze at the eastern Libyan oil port of Al-Sidra as armed factions allied to competing governments fought over control of the country’s biggest export terminal.

Rebels from a group called Libya Dawn, which helped to topple Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, seized control of the capital Tripoli in August - exiling the internationally recognised government east.

SNIP

In an ominous turn of events, a force allied to the self-declared Libya Dawn government earlier this month moved to seize Libya’s two biggest oil export ports, Al-Sidra and Ras Lanuf. Fighting has since spread to a third oil port.

Dayri repeated his government’s charge that forces attacking the oil facilities included elements of Ansar al-Sharia - a group the U.S. has designated as terrorists suspected of being involved in the deadly September 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi.

Bolding mine.

science can never fully divorce itself from ideology, we have examples of that throughout history: the Catholic Church and geocentricism, Hitler and eugenics, Stalin and Lysenko, modern Fundamentalists and creationism.

Global warming pits science against the ideology of the “free” market, which really means that producers of fossil fuels should be free of restrictions on earning money.

In the case of the ROC, I’d say that the institution (not, as you note, the lower echelons) was co-opted so long ago that it would take a great upheaval in the church to make them anything but eager to collaborate. And that they were just as eager to ally themselves with the new Soviet government — the (enormous) force applied was more an argument about terms after the Bolsheviks gave up on eradicating them.

re: #330 Snarknado!

In regard to the ROC and the Bolsheviks it would be more accurate to say that among the Church elite there were people eagerly willing to collaborate, their anti-Bolshevik opponents and the masses between the two poles that would swing between them. Patriarch Tikhon and his followers were not among the willingly cooptable. As the masses understood in which direction the winds were blowing, Tikhon was relieved of his post by the same people that used to curse the Bolsheviks just a bit earlier, during the Pomestnyj Sobor.

So yeah, there was this adaptability and cooptability, but it appeared in the presence of an external threat and not without opposition. Today there is no threat and what we see is not so much the state trying to coopt the church but vice versa - the church tries to coopt the regime, to make the rules of the game.

Another day in America. Woman drives around Chattanooga shooting people. Woman is wearing body armor. Woman even pointed gun at police all while the police engaged in car chase.

Woman is eventually arrested.

Chattanooga Police officers first responded to a report of shots fired on 1300 Cloverdale around 3:52 p.m., according to a news release from the Chattanooga Police Department.

Once the officers arrived on scene, they found two victims who said they were at a stop sign when the suspect, Julia Shields, pulled up in a dark colored sedan and fired shots into their vehicle, the release said.

A short time after this incident, police received several additional calls reporting that Shields was pointing her firearm at people as she drove pass them.

It was reported that she shot at another vehicle in the same area around 1300 Cloverdale Drive, and officers eventually located her sitting in her vehicle in the Stuart Heights Baptist Church Parking lot on Hixson Pike, the release states.

Shields escaped the parking lot in her car and led officers on a chase down Highway 153 and Hixson Pike, and continued to point her firearm at vehicles as she passed them.

The chase ended at the intersection of Cloverdale Drive and Koblan Drive, as Shields pointed her firearm at an officer, before being taken into custody without incident or injury.

Shields has been charged with 3 counts of attempted first degree murder, seven counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, felony evading arrest, and felony reckless endangerment, the release says.

Did I mention that the woman is white, or is that just assumed because I didn’t mention that the woman was shot and killed?

Note too that this doesn’t quite fit the right wing meme that blacks are out to kill cops. Nor does it indicate that cops will shoot and kill anyone that points guns at them (but there is a disturbing trend about who does get shot by police).

Though it should be noted a white man doing the same thing likely would have been fired upon. But white women are the least likely group in America to be shot at, in large part because they are seldom perceived as dangerous.

341 lawhawk  Dec 29, 2014 8:25:56am

re: #339 Dark_Falcon

Yet there have been a number of incidents that show that cops have taken white men into custody without shots fired when they’ve brandished weapons, killed cops, etc. (see Eric Frein as just the most recent example).

Black men who have done nothing wrong, and are holding a weapon in an open carry state (OH) have been gunned down by cops with barely any time for the person to react - that’s both Tamir Rice and John Crawford. In both cases, they were not actual firearms but toy gun and air gun respectively.

The fact that cops gave this woman a chance to be arrested shows that there is a real difference in how police perceive threats - and that there’s a racial bias to their actions. Moreover, that this woman was wearing body armor would suggest that she was a greater threat than either Rice or Crawford.

This story is from Saturday but it seems that in protesting the death of Antonio Martin, Joshua L. Williams (who has been a driving force behind protests in St. Louis County, Missouri) made a stupid mistake and handed himself to the county prosecutor on a silver platter:

The St. Louis County prosecutor’s office has filed charges against a teen believed to be involved in the looting and arson of a Quik Trip convenience store on Christmas Eve. Joshua L. Williams, 19, is charged with 1st degree arson, 2nd degree burglary, and misdemeanor theft.

The incident happened early Wednesday morning after a Berkeley police officer shot and killed Antonio Martin, 18, at a Mobil gas station in the 6800 block of North Hanley. Martin had allegedly pointed a gun at the officer.

A large crowd gathered at the Mobil to protest the police shooting. News video from the scene shows several people vandalizing a Quik Trip across the street. One person can be seen spraying liquid and setting things inside and outside the store on fire. Police were able to put out the flames before significant damage was done.

Violent and vicious - all for saying exactly what minorities are thinking when they encounter police on a daily basis - be careful. It’s what minority cops admit happens to them on a regular basis when they’re out of uniform. Racial profiling is real and it happens all too frequently. Calling for changes and improvement in policing isn’t an attack, let alone one that is violent and vicious.

Unprovoked Ambush On LAPD Patrol Car

The search for a gunman believed to be involved in an attack on two police officers in South Los Angeles on Sunday night was called off just before 6 a.m. today, officials said.

A citywide tactical alert was called after the incident in which two men opened fire on a police patrol car driving southbound on Hoover Street near 62nd Street. Officers said they saw a man step off a curb, aim and shoot at them.

“It was an ambush,” said Deputy Chief Bob Green. “They were fired upon without any prior contact with the suspects.”

This then led to an attention-seeking race to the bottom of the fever swamps. And they have still not hit bottom yet.

So much butthurt on twitter from people who can’t be bothered with actual facts.
A handful of idiots in the audience turn their backs and boo the mayor at the NYPD academy graduation and that’s being reported as the cadets doing that (no, they did not) and that applause for the mayor was “scattered” (no, it was not).
To read this crap one would think Madison Square Gardens was ringing with boos (no, it was not).

I feel bad for the graduates who all obviously worked very hard to achieve this goal, only to have their proud moment tarnished by a few other people wanting to show their asses.

Not sure about that, but Scalia definitely did when talking about torture.

“Jack Bauer saved Los Angeles. … He saved hundreds of thousands of lives,” Judge Scalia said. Then, recalling Season 2, where the agent’s rough interrogation tactics saved California from a terrorist nuke, the Supreme Court judge etched a line in the sand.

“Are you going to convict Jack Bauer?” Judge Scalia challenged his fellow judges. “Say that criminal law is against him? ‘You have the right to a jury trial?’ Is any jury going to convict Jack Bauer? I don’t think so.

So what Scalia is arguing is lawlessness, that disobeying the law is itself lawful if the outcome is one that society agrees with. That if I murder a man, arguing that he was a terrorist planning to blow up a mall, then I should be allowed to go free if it does indeed turn out he intended to blow up a mall.
