BREAKING: In 1999, Rep. Steve Scalise Embraced David Duke’s “Conservative” Views

Interesting.
Politics • Views: 43,630

On Jan. 7, 1999 John Mercurio, who used to cover congressional races for Roll Call, published an article entitled “Duke aims for Livingston seat,” which currently seems to be accessible only through a Usenet copy (as a part of “Antifa Info-Bulletin,” among unrelated articles and news items).

Mercurio surveys the views of local politicians on David Duke, among them - Steve Scalise:

Another potential candidate, state Rep. Steve Scalise (R), said he embraces many of the same “conservative” views as Duke, but is far more viable.

“The novelty of David Duke has worn off,” said Scalise. “The voters in this district are smart enough to realize that they need to get behind someone who not only believes in the issues they care about, but also can get elected. Duke has proven that he can’t get elected, and that’s the first and most important thing.”

A few things are notable here. First of all, of course, Scalise knew who Duke was (so his excuses about not recognizing the nature of Duke’s organization ring hollow). But the language he uses is also telling. The only problem with Duke for Scalise is that he is unelectable - not that he’s a neo-Nazi. And Scalise even says for whatever reason that he embraces many of Duke’s views…

Update: Roll Call has now posted the article on their blog.

I had to put the word “Breaking” in this headline, because it really is breaking news nobody else has yet. Great find, Sergey.

I’m uncomfortable with the word “praised”.

4 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD  Dec 29, 2014 3:20:49pm

Typical.

Duke said he’ll focus his campaign on promises to “outlaw
affirmative action programs that discriminate against European
Americans, shut down illegal immigration and take a time out on
legal immigration.” He said he would also actively oppose efforts
by Puerto Rico to acquire statehood.

Duke, the founder and former president of the National
Association for the Advancement of White People, has provoked
passionate reactions from every corner of the political spectrum
since he vaulted onto the national scene in the late 1980s.

He made headlines when he acknowledged sympathizing with
Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany, but won votes
by talking to
constituents about issues more relevant to their daily lives,
like taxes, welfare reform and racial quotas.

re: #3 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD

I think it’s a fair characterization - but I changed it back to “embraced” because that’s the language in the piece. But “embracing” is pretty much the same as “praising,” don’t you think?

re: #5 Charles Johnson

I see a difference there. “Praised DD’s views” reads like “praised Duke”, even if it doesn’t literally say that.

7 HappyWarrior  Dec 29, 2014 3:25:37pm

Excellent excellent research. So Scalise was fine with Duke’s views. He just didn’t think he was viable as a candidate.

So if Scalise didn’t know anything about David Duke, why was even at the event? Do politicians typically show up to speak at events hosted by people that don’t have any particular notoriety of any kind?

You know the truth is and why I suspect Chuckles is doubling down on defending him so much is because deep down he knows what many of us already know and that’s that David Duke’s message of white supremacism had quite a bit of appeal to Louisiana conservatives. David Duke got over 40% of the vote in both his runs for high office there.

He’s doubling down because Chuck is a racist. You can’t post what he does without having racist tendencies.

44 HappyWarrior  Dec 29, 2014 3:44:53pm

Scalise’s words in the original Roll Call article remind me of what Lee Atwater said. You start out by saying n-word, n-word. Then when that doesn’t work. You start talking about busing. And then when that doesn’t work, you start talking about lower taxes and welfare. So in short I see Scalise much like his fellow Louisianan, Tony Perkins who is someone who would be happy to get the votes and support of Duke supporters.

Opposing abortion in the case of rape effectively legitimizes rape as a procreative method. It results in the genes of rapist’s being passed on against the will of the woman forced to carry their child to term. It’s a tacit condoning of rape itself as a means of reproduction. Saying it’s wrong doesn’t mean much in the long term when you sit idly by and allow it to be rewarded in this way.

Gone in a flash? The moment car explodes into pieces as LIGHTNING allegedly hits it during high-speed police chase after church robbery

A hair-raising video has emerged that a car full of masked robbers exploding moments after they raided a church in Russia - and witnesses insist they were hit by lightning.

The dash cam footage uploaded by YouTube user World News TV, shows a vehicle speeding along with a police siren sounding in the background.

All of a sudden the car bursts into flames and explodes, sending debris all over the road.

The vehicle filming the incident immediately slows down and pulls over.

According to a caption accompanying the video, everyone in the runaway car died as a result of the electrical bolt.

Right after the news about Tylenol being bad hit the news, my girlfriend was in the hospital with gastro-intestinal issues.

Last fall, Ashley Gardner’s priceless expression went viral when her husband snapped a photo of her as she found out she was pregnant with two sets of identical twins.

Image: ht_quadruplets_1_kab_141003_16x9_992.jpg

And now, after a little more than 29 weeks, the babies have arrived via cesarean section.

“Mom and babies are doing incredible!!!” the family wrote on its Facebook account, A Miracle Unfolding — Gardner Quadruplets. “We are so happy with how everything turned out today! The doctors, nurses, and staff were incredible!! More updates to follow soon!!”

That’s exactly why Scalise is on the low road back to Washington. To win this election, Scalise needs to hang that “D” around Harlan’s neck loudly and often. Scalise’s current TV ad doesn’t show either him or Harlan. The stars of the spot are Barack Hussein Obama and the Rev. Jermiah Wright. A shadowy (dare I say, “terrorist-y”) shot of Obama appears, then a clip of Rev. Wright, shouting his now-infamous “G-d DAMN America!”

Not only is Scalise aiming to alert voters that he’s running against a Democrat, he’s warning them that his opponent is affiliated with the Eebil Coloreds. Not only are they Eebil Coloreds, but, in Wright’s case, he’s an Eebil Reverend, one of those bible-thumping Protestant-types that make the ethnic-Irish and Italian Catholics of LA-01 nervous.

You don’t think you are taking a position, but you are. You are shrugging your shoulders and saying it’s unimportant what politicians want to do about the question. Would you feel the same way if there was a good percentage of the voting public who wanted to allow the government to force you to, say, donate a kidney upon request? I suspect not.

Speaking as a mother of 2, pregnancy isn’t just a matter of carting a little extra weight around with you. It can make it difficult to impossible to do whatever work one usually does. Side effects include nausea, exhaustion, difficulty standing for long periods of time-especially late in pregnancy, and this is for a normal pregnancy. There are also a variety of conditions that can be life threatening and/or sufficiently debilitating to require quitting a job. For any woman, but particularly a young single woman this can completely derail her life.

There are women who go through pregnancy with flying colors, never feeling better in their lives, but even they should have a choice about whether to literally provide their body for the use of a genetically separate individual.

Full disclosure: I love my children, if I had it to do over, I absolutely would. Pregnancy was not the high point of my life. ;)

One thing to note reading through the Roll Call article, is that another notable Republican was able to speak about David Duke without putting on an asshat, that Republican being then state Rep but now Senator David Vitter, who won the Congressional race Duke had entered:

“I honestly think his 15 minutes of fame have come and gone,” said state Rep. David Vitter (R), a wealthy Metairie attorney who holds Duke’s old seat in the state House and is “seriously considering” a Congressional bid. “When he’s competed in a field with real conservatives, real Republicans, Duke has not done well at all.”

David Vitter’s got his own problems (the DC Madam scandal being the big one), but he’s not a hatemonger like David Duke and he knew how to give Duke the backhand.

The Vitter campaign sent fliers to black voters stating that the racist David Duke was supporting his opponent. In fact, Treen had been an enemy of Duke and had tried to stop his rise in Louisiana GOP politics. “Dave Treen and I have absolutely no use for David Duke whatsoever,” John Treen said. “He [Duke] tried to shake my hand once, and I said, ‘I’m not going to shake your hand, you son of a bitch.’ It’s hypocritical to shake someone’s hand if you consider them an enemy.” But in what John Treen believes was a secret pact between Duke and Vitter, the former Ku Klux Klansman came out publicly for his nemesis, Treen.

The effect was to suppress the black vote. Amid low turnout, Vitter eked out a victory with 51 percent. Curiously, though, the New Orleans area precincts that had supported Duke in the earlier phase of the race went not for Treen — whom the white supremacist had claimed to be supporting — but for Vitter. That was evidence, John Treen claims, that Duke’s supporters had secretly been rounding up votes for Vitter.

It’s showtime:

Dispatch: ‘A Ground Invasion of the Capital Is Imminent’

All-out war is coming to Libya, as rebel militias and a government-in-hiding begin a battle for control of the country.

TRIPOLI, Libya — Zeina, 27, was hanging out her washing when the first Grad rocket smashed into a neighbor’s house at the end of her dusty street. The deafening boom was followed by the telltale buzz of more incoming rockets. Libya’s civil war had landed on her doorstep.

“It started as a normal day — then we heard the sound of shelling and rockets,” said the young mother. “Without warning, they hit our houses. We fled with just the clothes we were wearing.”

Zeina is now crammed together with seven other people in a cinderblock outhouse that is part of Tripoli’s zoo. They are just a handful of the more than 400,000 people who are currently displaced inside Libya, which is witnessing its worst crisis since the 2011 NATO-backed revolt that toppled dictator Muammar Qaddafi.

For three years, Libya has been without a functioning government, police force, or army. The country has been ripped apart by warring fiefdoms of ex-rebels who helped oust Qaddafi but have since directed politics with AK-47s and anti-aircraft guns. This summer, as the battle lines began to harden, two rival factions emerged to vie for control of Libya: On one side is the newly elected parliament that has been banished to the eastern city of Tobruk — supported by the fractured remains of Qaddafi soldiers who defected during the uprising, as well as regional powers like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. On the other side is Libya Dawn, a self-described revolutionary coalition of militiamen and Islamist-leaning politicians that originated in the western city of Misrata, allegedly backed by Turkey and Qatar.

Do you know what I noted in reading the original 199 article? Not a single one of the party leaders or contenders for the House seat dismissed Duke for his deplorably racist, antisemitic views—they dismissed him because he would hamper their ability to attract “moderate voters and minorities.”

The same thing they do today.

re: #171 calochortus

I will read it. I have in the past read some of her writing, and does take a bit of effort to get into the mindset of someone writing over a century ago.

I always think of this work because she was the first I found to use basic economics to explain the necessity of “voluntary motherhood”.

Large Supply + low demand == low price

Lots of people + few job opportunties = low value on life.

I think it is very difficult for those born after the Civil Rights movement and the Roe V Wade to understand the number of children in this country whose parents could not care for them. We don’t remember Boys Town or Hells Kitchen —unless one reads.

The Religious Whackos are (perhaps naively) leading us right back to that.

Reading Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes is a good start in contemporary writing.

After my second miscarriage, I had a D&C and several months later, I got pregnant. Then a year after my son was born, surprise #2 came. I thought I was lucky enough to even get pregnant, I didn’t think I would again. Whoops!

Anyway, I will be thinking good thoughts for you two. :)

In the summer of 2009, Gowdy announced that he would challenge incumbent Republican U.S. Congressman Bob Inglis in the Republican primary for South Carolina’s 4th congressional district. Inglis, who got a 93% lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union, angered the conservative wing of the Republican Party by taking stances that were perceived to be more moderate than those he’d taken when he’d first represented the district from 1993 to 1999.[8] For instance, he’d angered conservatives in his district when he supported cap and trade as a result of his belief that global warming is man made.[9] He drew five Republican challengers, and Gowdy was one of them. Like most of the challengers, Gowdy ran well to Inglis’ right.

An ardent social conservative, Gowdy considers himself “pro-life plus.” He not only believes “in the sanctity of life,” but argues that “the strategy should be broader than waiting for the Supreme Court to revisit Roe v. Wade.”[22]

The term “La Raza” has its origins in early 20th century Latin American literature and translates into English most closely as “the people” or, according to some scholars, “the Hispanic people of the New World.” The term was coined by Mexican scholar José Vasconcelos to reflect the fact that the people of Latin America are a mixture of many of the world’s races, cultures, and religions. Some people have mistranslated “La Raza” to mean “the race,” implying that it is a term meant to exclude others. In fact, the full term coined by Vasconcelos, “la raza cósmica,” meaning “the cosmic people,” was developed to reflect not purity but the mixture inherent in the Hispanic people. This is an inclusive concept, meaning that Hispanics share with all other peoples of the world a common heritage and destiny.

Here’s when I first heard of David Duke.

Ocean County’s inconvenient truth: The Ku Klux Klan was once a big deal here

I remember Duke from a magazine (Time or People???) from like 1977 or so when he was being passed off as a nice young man that is putting a cleaner, softer face on the KKK.

He has been known to be a KKKer since at least 1974, maybe earlier.

September 18, 1974 - David Duke

Here is a link to an article about him in 1974, where I got the picture after a Google search to find the younger Duke.

St. Cloud University Library - David Duke Entry

Ku Klux Klan (KKK) Grand Dragon David Duke spoke to a capacity crowd at Halenbeck Hall on September 18, 1974. The 24 year old graduate of Louisana State University was met by “jeers, boos, and applause” by the spectators. Protestors chanted and held signs to show their displeasure in Duke’s appearance. The September 20, 1974 edition of the Chronicle said that Duke’s speech was “in part an attempt to document the KKK’s theories regarding Jews and communism, the differences between the races, and the history of white America.” Duke would later run for many political offices, most notable the election for Louisana governor in 1991.

Make sure you know where you can get the audio to Atwater’s statement.

There are a lot more of us Obots than you think. Almost everyone I know still loves having him as president.

From the perspective of this outsider, Obama is the most rational of all the presidents I’ve lived through as an adult.

Obama answers boy’s heartbreaking letter to Santa

“When I pulled this one letter from a seventh-grade class at an Englewood elementary school, I couldn’t stop reading it,” Michelle DiGiacomo, CEO of DirectEffect, told the Sun Times. “All this kid was asking for was safety. I was floored.”

My wife and I continue to struggle with infertility. After a miscarriage a year ago we’re starting to accept that we may never have biological children. We are hoping to adopt but the costs of such are…significant.

We’ll have to wait and see I guess.

Been there. Spending the money on adoption rather than fertility treatments worked out best for us. Our boy from Vietnam is a delight every day (even when he’s not … ;)

If she’s a side-sleeper she might enjoy a body pillow. I love mine but hardly ever use it anymore because the cats never fail to appropriate it, then give me dirty looks when I make them move.

We have 2 unused body pillows here. We used them a few years ago, but they were never an advantage.

OTOH, she uses 6 other pillows of various construction.

I got a water pillow for my head —REALLY, REALLY LOVE IT and about 3 under my knees, and 2 extra on the side for when I turn over and sleep on my side.

and various braces for joints used as needed.

314 b_sharp  Dec 29, 2014 6:50:48pm

Our cats are upset we’re both sleeping downstairs right now, so they’re acting out by making piles of noise when we try to sleep.

I finally blew up at them and the last two nights they’ve disappeared when we turn the lights out.

re: #287 jaunte

It’s like every time the President has encounters with regular people they turn into Obots.

I answer customer service calls as a (too large) part of my job. Part of the call answering process involves verifying people’s information like where they live, where they work, etc. to keep the info updated. Additionally, we are required to try and make small chit-chat (which is bullshit, but I digress).

So back before Xmas I take a call from a person who works for the DNC in a mid-Atlantic state. Well cool, I’ve never talked to anybody who worked in a political post like that, so I asked her if she got to meet anybody, and what sort of hate mail she must get from the other side, etc.

This person told me that as much as you might not believe in charisma, when you meet a President, it’s definitely there. She said when she met Obama he “controlled the room”, and that it was amazing to watch him. We’ve all heard much the same thing about Clinton, of course.

I just thought that was interesting. Charisma and “working a room” is pretty much part of the job, so all Presidents must have some measure of that skill.
