Anticipating what 2015 will bring, along with watching more British cop shows in which no guns are used to catch criminals. They could teach American cops how to de-escalate, for sure. : )

I was on the fence for years. “How good can it be?” I’d ask myself.

Sometime in 2013-2014 I realized that LGF is my kind of site. Not only in the content and comments, but community. I had less than a thousand comments at the beginning of the year, but something clicked and I decided to post a little more often.

With the subscription, the pages load so much faster, the site is much cleaner looking, and now I feel I have a stake in keeping LGF quality.

If you comment more than five times a day, give Charles some money. A lot of work goes into it, compensation is polite and righteous.

I’m debating going to the “Dive into New Year” scuba dive tomorrow night. Problem is that it’s going to be about 20* tomorrow night, and with no real place to get out of the weather there I think I’m going to pass. I’m going to Atlanta on Friday to dive the Aquarium (the big tank with the rays and whale sharks). The chance of getting sick is too high to mess up something I’m really looking forward too.

Besides, I have the possibility of a drunken upChuck New Year Tweeting for our enjoyment.

I went to college in Gunnison, CO, we dealt with similar cold snaps there. We’d see a couple of weeks straight of temperatures not exceeding -15°F. Then suddenly the temp would jump up to 19° and all of a sudden everybody is in shorts and t-shirts playing volleyball outside!

The Gimli Glider. That was a case of an event cycle that could have been broken at a number of different points over 2 days. It was a combination of conversion errors, a broken gauge, and a willingness to ‘go along’ rather than make a scene / delay a flight by getting the fuel in the tanks measured.

It’s a great example of an accident cycle that had a very small initiating event that gradually turned into an incident pit they couldn’t climb out of. It’s a miracle (and a tribute to the pilot who was a skilled glider pilot) that nobody was injured. There is a great book on it that breaks out the whole series of events.

Feiglin is more or less like David Duke, so no surprise that Chuck endorses him.

You can find places where we say the same things. You can also find places where we are different. I was in the army when Meir, Hashem yikom damo [may God avenge his blood], was [most] active, so I didn’t get to know him so well. But I can definitely say that the slogan “Kahane tzadak - Kahane was right” has proven itself many times.

-

Arabs are “a gang of bandits that never produced anything and never wanted to produce anything - a gang of bandits that for over one thousand years (since Islam was born) has lived on robbery and terror… . Since their establishment, the Arab states have produced nothing but poverty, suffering, wars - and fantastic wealth for their leaders.”

-

The Arabs engage in typical Amalek behaviour. I can’t prove this genetically but this is the behaviour of Amalek.

(Since it’s God’s commandment to exterminate Amalek, it’s basically a call for genocide.)-

We shall offer them human rights without civil rights, so long as they prove their loyalty to their Jewish state host and accept Jewish sovereignty over their land. In such a situation they will be given legal-resident status and they can carry on their private affairs without anyone infringing on their human rights.

-

Why should non-Jews have a say in the policy of a Jewish state?… For two thousand years, Jews dreamed of a Jewish state, not a democratic state. Democracy should serve the values of the state, not destroy them… You can’t teach a monkey to speak and you can’t teach an Arab to be democratic. You’re dealing with a culture of thieves and robbers. The Arab destroys everything he touches.

-

Hitler was an unparalleled military genius. Nazism promoted Germany from a low to a fantastic physical and ideological status. The ragged, trashy youth body turned into a neat and orderly part of society and Germany received an exemplary regime, a proper justice system and public order. Hitler savored good music. He would paint. This was no bunch of thugs.

-

The gay pride parade isn’t about rights. It’s about forcing the values of the minority onto the majority, effectively locking the majority into the proverbial closet. Homosexual “rights” undermine the normative family, the foundation of our nation.

-

Feiglin is banned from entering the United Kingdom due to a decision by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, made public in March 2008, excluding Feiglin on the grounds that his presence in the country “would not be conducive to the public good.” A letter to Feiglin from the Home Office said that Smith based her decision on an assessment that his activities “foment or justify terrorist violence in furtherance of particular beliefs; seek to provoke others to terrorist acts; foment other serious criminal activity or seek to provoke others to serious criminal acts and foster hatred which might lead to inter-community violence in the UK.”

In March 2009, scientists released the results of their research on deep-sea (depths of ~300 to 3,000 m) corals throughout the world. They discovered specimens of Leiopathes to be among the oldest continuously living organisms on the planet: around 4,265 years old. They show that the “radial growth rates are as low as 4 to 35 micrometers per year and that individual colony longevities are on the order of thousands of years”.[2][3]

Duke wrote a self-help book for women to raise money under the pseudonym Dorothy Vanderbilt and James Konrad, titled Finders-Keepers - Finding and Keeping the Man You Want which contains sexual, diet, fashion, cosmetic and relationship advice, published by Arlington Place Books in 1976. Professor Lawrence N. Powell, who read a rare copy of the book given to him by Patsy Sims, wrote that it includes advice on vaginal exercises, fellatio, and anal sex.

A type of diamond called carbonado that is found in South America and Africa may have been deposited there via an asteroid impact (not formed from the impact) about 3 billion years ago. These diamonds may have formed in the intrastellar environment, but as of 2008, there was no scientific consensus on how carbonado diamonds originated.[16][17]

Scientific evidence indicates that white dwarf starshave a core of crystallized carbon and oxygen nuclei. The largest of these found in the universe so far, BPM 37093, is located 50 light-years (4.7×1014 km) away in the constellation Centaurus. A news release from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics described the 2,500-mile (4,000 km)-wide stellar core as a diamond.[19] It was referred to as Lucy, after the Beatles’ song “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds”.[20][21]

Quite real. It’s sometimes exploited as a “cage” of sorts that can hold one or two other atoms, for various experiments.

Thanks for your concern. These things usually flare up once or twice a day, everyday for the last 30-odd years. The next time I hear that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem I’m stomping on somebody’s balls. When your life is a burning building, sometimes you have to make your own exit. Looks like I’m stuck on this side of the whatever it is that’s between this side and the other side. The damn rope broke. I was all set (I even bought a single gallon of gas just because I’m a prick). I set myself up and the next thing I knew I had sprained my left knee, I had bit my tongue, my larynx was throbbing and my pants were completely soaked. Whatever despair and rage had driven me to this point was quickly replaced but annoyance. I tried again but by this time my neck was so sore I just gave up. At least I hadn’t said any grand good byes, that would be sort of awkward tomorrow!
So I figure I’ve reached rock bottom. Nowhere to go but up, right?
I think I’m going to be wearing a turtleneck for the next few days, however.

The fact that Steve is talking is good. The fact that he is not forthcoming with his physical location is a choice. He obviously wants some space right now. The fact that this is a long grind for him should be respected.

This time of year is always dangerous for folks with clinical depression. His comment that he thought “You’re Late For Clinical!” indicates he is in a Medical Field and that he is perfectly self-aware of the situation.

When I had my little rubber factory we used both, depending on what we were working with. The gram is a very convenient unit because it’s pretty small. Millimeters were actually out of favor because it was too small a unit. It was easier to use increments of 16th inches. On larger blanks centimeters would have been useful, but since the stuff on the benches were made to English units, we went with inches for convenience. We did not use and measures for volume, and used the Fahrenheit scale because the smaller degree was more useful and it was safer because we were always afraid somebody might not realize how hot 170 C really was (335 F)

We were locked in the unit, with a network of tunnels between me and the outside. I would be trying to ask the doctor this question or that question about the patient while WW3 was going on inside! I kept thinking they were going to drag me back in every time. I also had a really freaky intuitive level of communication with the patients. I really gotta write a book.

I don’t know if you are still here for the evening but like so many others, I encourage talking to someone. I won’t say that there’s someone out there who knows exactly what it is like, because everyone’s experience is different - but there are a lot of us out there who care and are willing to listen, distract, and simply be so that you don’t have to feel so alone.

398 klystron  Dec 30, 2014 10:38:50pm

Because this state delights in laughing at me, there is snow at Joshua Tree (!!!!!) while our trip to Sacramento yielded a fun day at the state railroad museum (actually highly recommended if you like trains in any way/shape/form, or history) and then delays on the train back to the Bay Area because high winds took some trees down onto the track.

The person behind me was really not happy about this development and clearly has not learned the trick of traveling on Amtrak anywhere outside of the Northeast Corridor …which is that you’re never going to get there on time, so just stop worrying and enjoy the ride.

Stately plump, Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed. A yellow dressing gown, ungirdled, was sustained gently-behind him by the mild morning air. He held the bowl aloft and intoned:

— How does it feel? How does it feel? To be on your own? Like a rolling stone?

Has there been any code changes recently, Charles?

Has anyone posted this latest responsible gun owners sotry?

A woman in the US state of Idaho has been killed after her two-year-old son accidentally shot her with a gun he found when reaching into her handbag.

Was just reading this and was thinking about paging it with the title, Killed by her own stupidity. WTF was she thinking? That weapon had to cocked and the safety off for a 2 yo kid to be able to discharge it.

It’s 72° this morning in Miami Beach. We are heading to the airport in about half an hour to fly home where the temp is 50° colder.

You would literally have to pay me to move out of Detroit. I live in a beautiful 5-bedroom house in a Detroit suburb, way too big for just 2 people, but because of the housing market here we could not get more than $200K for it. Plop this same house down in Brooklyn or Miami Beach or Toronto and it would be worth well more than $500K.

Not to mention the fact that she had her gun in her purse. That defies the entire point of concealed carry for protection. What if her purse had been stolen? She’d be without her purse AND unarmed.

Of course, the sympathetic sob story is now coming out:

washingtonpost.com

Rutledge isn’t just sad — he’s angry. Not at his grandson. Nor at his dead daughter-in-law, “who didn’t have a malicious fiber in her body,” he said. He’s angry at the observers already using the accident as an excuse to grandstand on gun rights.

“They are painting Veronica as irresponsible, and that is not the case,” he said. “… I brought my son up around guns, and he has extensive experience shooting it. And Veronica had had hand gun classes; they’re both licensed to carry, and this wasn’t just some purse she had thrown her gun into.”

I feel for that little boy who will grow up without his mother, but if she was truly a responsible gun owner she wouldn’t have left a loaded weapon unattended where a 2-year old could get it.

The purse is a popular place for women who carry concealed in part because if done right the gun won’t ‘print’ in inside a purse. ‘Printing’ in this case means that the outline of the gun shows against clothing and it is to be avoided as it can get you in trouble with the cops and scare people who are afraid of guns.

You’re doing it right. You might consider dual booting Win10 with your current OS. 466 lawhawk  Dec 31, 2014 6:49:34am

re: #437 Dark_Falcon

Moral authority? Let’s see: Eric Garner is dead b/c of that moral authority to kill with impunity, even though the cop used an illegal chokehold under Department rules, and the grand jury didn’t even consider a reckless endangerment charge.

The DA in that case has expressed an interest in running for the Congressional seat being vacated by Michael Grimm btw. But I digress.

Other cops killed an unarmed man who was doing absolutely nothing wrong other than walking down a stairwell while a pair of cops was doing a sweep up the staircase. The NYPD calls it accidental, but what was the cop doing with his finger on the trigger in the first place? That goes to policy/procedure/practice, and training/tactics.

The NYPD pursued stop and frisk for years, generating hundreds of thousands of stops that resulted in no arrests at all. That procedure began to be curtailed last year and ended this year, and there’s been no resulting increase in crime. Correlation doesn’t equal causation, but it does make the claim that stop and frisk worked to reduce crime a bit more difficult to believe.

Cops do a difficult job, but when you have police union leadership blaming the politicians - Obama, Holder, and DeBlasio - for the deaths of two cops by saying what is indisputably true (that racial profiling leads parents to have conversations with their kids about how to act around cops), and union officials flat out lying and smearing the elected leaders in the process, what moral authority do they have?

The unions are pushing insubordination.

The unions are risking public safety with a “slowdown”.

The unions are worried about the safety of their own, but show a lack of interest in the safety of blacks who are killed at an alarming rate during stops - armed and unarmed. Whites are simply not killed at the same rates during these same kinds of stops.

Minority cops in the NYPD face racial discrimination and profiling by their fellow cops when out of uniform, so they too know the sting of what the “moral authority” the NYPD has.

These are significant problems, and the mayor calling for a fix to police policies and procedures isn’t an attack. It’s a clarion call to do better.

Period.

But of course the right wing and police unions want to turn this into an attack - there’s always elections to worry about and the union also faces a contract talks, so this is yet another tactic to get what the union wants, which isn’t necessarily what the public wants, needs, or can afford.

Speaking of biochemistry, I would love someday to know how tissues can tell the diff between Na and K. Chemically, they’re very nearly identical. I have a close friend who temporarily lost his mind to stress and alcoholism. In one day he drove his car into a house to try to kill himself, failed and went to work where he tried again by jumping from a second floor balcony, which got him a lot of time in the hospital to think. He’s doing fine now. Lot of us go through this, and fully recover to be happy again.

From the article:

Now the Anti-Defamation League — the venerable century-old organization that criticizes all forms of hate and bigotry and has long monitored Duke and his supporters — is weighing in on the controversy.

In an interview with me, Stacy Burdett, the ADL’s Government and National Affairs Director, said that Scalise, unintentionally or not, had “legitimized” Duke’s “hate and bigotry.” However, she said she was satisfied thus far with his response, though she added that it was just an “opening” and that it is still on Scalise in coming weeks to convert the affair into a positive lesson for the American people.

“By standing on their platform, whether he intended to or not, he potentially sent a message that he endorsed their views,” Burdett told me. “ADL speaks out whenever political leaders in any way give bigotry a platform or legitimacy.”

“Hate groups like David Duke’s organization are a real part of American life,” Burdett said. “Any appearance before such a group risks legitimizing their bigotry. The public is absolutely justified in taking it seriously when a senior leader in Congress participates in an event like that, which is practically synonymous with hate and bigotry in Americans’ minds.”

But Burdett added that the ADL is satisfied with the statement that Scalise released yesterday. In it, Scalise said that speaking to the group was a “mistake I regret,” adding that “I emphatically oppose the divisive racial and religious views groups like these hold,” and that “I reject that kind of hateful bigotry.”

If you check Amazon every day, they often have zero cost surprises. I’ve gotten bestsellers for free and found great self published authors that way.

I also signed up for Kindle Unlimited which gives you access to tons of books.

Since my hands got all messed up, I have a hard time holding books. But my iPhone fits comfortably in my hand, so I read on it virtually non-stop when I’m not working. The Kindle app is the best thing ever for me.

The Kindle app is nice because if the battery goes low on one Android, I can continue reading on the other where the book will open to the same spot where I stopped.

You have to look at all the free books, they don’t advertise them really. And bestsellers are just there periodically. Google “Free Kindle Books” and bookmark the page. It’s hard to navigate to on Amazon itself.

Caveat: many free books suck. Some authors think they write as well as American Idol contestants think they sing (not well). But some are very good.

Levin is also anti-Scalise:

Actually, Rep. Steve Scalise is a Boehner guy. Scalise took over the Republican Study Committee, which was originally established as the conservative alternative to House Republican RINOs many years ago. Paul Teller has a sterling reputation and has been a senior staffer at the RSC for many years. This is nothing short of a purge. Teller’s job was to work with conservatives in the House and outside groups to form and promote a conservative agenda. I don’t know him personally, but he is well known around Washington. Boehner needs to go, and Scalise has single-handedly destroyed the RSC, which can no longer be trusted to advance conservative principles.

Maybe. Coz it reads like something Dailykos might have written:

Aides to Boehner and McCarthy still haven’t answered specific questions about what their bosses knew and when they knew it, but perhaps even more troubling for them is that, as the two top House GOP officials rallied around Scalise, more damaging news emerged. It turns out that Scalise’s relationship with Duke’s top political hand, Kenneth Knight, was not just a flash in the pan at one specific event-it was a long-term relationship lasting several years, and involved the top aide to the former KKK head actually campaigning for Scalise on the ground in Louisiana to get him elected to the U.S. Congress. Also, in a twist of fate, by backing up Scalise, they’re actually siding with Duke—the former KKK Grand Wizard—who said Monday evening that he thinks Scalise shouldn’t face consequences like resignation over this.

Which is why I’ve come to dislike Sean Hannity. To quote Al Pacino’s mayor of New York in the movie City Hall, my view of Congress is that “All this is about is getting things done!”. Congress is supposed to set out the federal budget, pass needed laws, and oversee federal agencies to make sure they do their jobs right. It doesn’t exist to take moral stands or to wage prolonged ideological sieges.

Hannity seems to think it is the job of Congress to lead an uprising against President Obama. but that is not the job of Congress and John Boehner and Mitch McConnell know it. But Hannitty cares nothing for their practical concerns and instead cares only about riling up his viewing base.

I still like printed books better, but the Kindle and ereaders are very convenient for reading in bed or when traveling. And, again, the very major convenience of borrowing library books without having to go to the actual library.
MrBWS loves his Kindle because of the narration feature: he can listen to his books when making the two-hour drive each way to work and back, then pick it up and start actually reading when he’s not driving.

If the print is too small for comfort, I can change the size of the font. Even with bifocals or reading glasses, books are more uncomfortable for me. Oh, yes indeed — having it along when traveling is a great blessing (although I usually weigh myself down with printed books as well). I also like having immediate access to thousands of public domain books, just in case I get bored with what’s with me (most of my traveling has been out of internet range, so a few megabytes of classics on my hard drive keeps me from worrying that I’ll run out of reading material, although that’s never come close to happening).

My library is a 15-minute walk away, and my eyesight is still okay, although I need reading glasses, being a Person of Increased Age, so those aren’t so much of an issue. When I listen to something it’s usually classic radio programs or Teaching Company lectures.

Not me. A number of years ago (pre my buying my first kindle, when they were more than $300) I went to Germany for two weeks in business. I brought 10 books with me. I hated the weight and as I schlepped my luggage to the hotel, I kept cursing myself that I should have just ponied up the bucks for one slim device. I was already schlepping a 10 lb computer…a few extra ounces would have been cake.

The reason I wouldn’t cough up the cash for the first Kindles was that they weren’t backlit and had no night reading option other than an actual lamp. Ok, it was more like a book. Great. But, to me, there was something wrong with having to buy an electronic device (a book light) for an electronic device (the Kindle), especially when looking at $400 all told. Put a tiny lightbulb at the top…something.

All the griping aside, the Kindle was a revolution. And I can’t imagine life without it.

Well I have one book that I’ve been reading on and off again for the past four years or so. It’s a collection of short stories by Cheever. It really is impossible to get board during a long flight now especially given that most of the major airlines have a wide range of movies to choose from. I watched The Departed on my way to Shannon last summer.

Another reason I keep the ancient ereader is that it’s not backlit, so the battery will last days and days. Also, it’s not so hard on the eyes. I added a book light for night reading and I do fine with it. (My travel computer weighs about 2 pounds, so I have weight and space left for a few books. Although I always load up with more than I need — I’m working on that….)

LOL. We just bought my almost 10-year-old an early birthday gift…the regular Kindle. Well, she loves it, but it has no light and she can’t read it in the dark. I can’t stand it! It’s going back today and we are getting her a paper white Kindle today.

And a real shitty attitude to boot. My response to all snakes is to view, enjoy, and step around.

I’m a little late to this party, but if you have seen the rattlesnake, it isn’t a problem. You avoid it, it avoids you. If you haven’t seen the rattlesnake, a gun isn’t going to help.

Maybe it’s just me but I can’t help wondering:

If you need the gun to defend yourself from a rattler, something’s wrong. You’re more likely to shoot yourself in the foot than hit the rattler. I think that most people just step (or jump) backwards.

I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that you’ve never come across a rattlesnake in the wild. They are damn near impossible to see and don’t always go off when you get near. If you have an animal with you, as an example, you might need to take drastic measures.

Can’t help with that, but I have another suggestion for you. Video Games. When I was at my worst, and just wanted to be dead, I could shut out the emotional pain by really immersing myself in a video game. For me it was Mass Effect 2, which was a big game at the time.

Still do that. Plus the fact that I can play games, or switch to another one, or just take a break, means I can keep the emotional stress to a minimum.

Out in The World you’re playing all the time with rules that favour the rule makers and you only stop playing when you’re dead.

Who needs that shit?

I also signed up for Kindle Unlimited which gives you access to tons of books.

It does, at a huge cost to authors. I know some self published author whose income has fallen 75% when they put their books on Unlimited.

Can’t say I’m surprised though. Amazon is approaching monopoly status in the ebook field and so they can get away with such things. The logic of making a profit means that they will do such things.

C’est la vie.

Eastern rattlers and copperheads abound in my woods (and copperheads are also around my house - one of my dogs was bitten in the face a few years ago). When I go hiking I have a stout stick and make lots of noise. Almost all of my snake encounters have ended well all around, except once when I got bit in the leg by a smallish copperhead, over by our pond, who should have been hibernating. Even that snake survived.

I have no doubt that you can still get a lot of use out of an original N7, and rebooting daily isn’t really a big deal. Even the original has a pretty sweet screen, though the screen on my first one did develop yellow spots. I replaced it when I broke the screen while getting out of my car with it in my pocket (be careful). The replacement did not have the yellowing problem, so they seem to have fixed it.

It did turn cold, didn’t it! We got snow a couple of days ago, and it’s still lurking in the shadows. We set up a bike on a trainer in the house so I’d get some exercise. That makes me warm!

Good idea!
I should do this. I completely failed to get on my bike last summer, and it would be good to get some use out of it over the winter.

My dad’s dog won’t go near them. Chances are, most people hiking have gone right on by rattlesnakes and never had a clue.

When I run the trails here in AZ in spring or fall, it can be a bit dicy. I’ve put my foot down within inches of a rattler’s head. Fortunately, my dog didn’t notice the snake. And there’s nothing like the speed work associated with a 200 yard sprint that you do after the unseen rattlesnake decides to warn you that you are invading his space.

re: #607 Backwoods_Sleuth

Eastern rattlers and copperheads abound in my woods (and copperheads are also around my house - one of my dogs was bitten in the face a few years ago). When I go hiking I have a stout stick and make lots of noise. Almost all of my snake encounters have ended well all around, except once when I got bit in the leg by a smallish copperhead, over by our pond, who should have been hibernating. Even that snake survived.

My grandmother was West Virginia. She was making preserves one day, and had to go outside for something. She was bitten on the hand by a copperhead. She then proceeded to go back inside, finish canning the preserves, before going to the hospital.

I didn’t go to the hospital (no insurance or money at the time, and it was a sleepy little copperhead). Suctioned the bite area, applied a slippery elm poultice and antibiotic cream, and hoped for the best. It wasn’t pretty, took about a month to heal, and I still have the scar.
I watch carefully where I step now.

Folks here are going to be shocked to read that this high profile fellow is funding work on criminal justice reform and actually has some activist support on the matter:

Charles Koch Wants To Change America’s Criminal Justice System

Charles Koch, the billionaire chairman and CEO of Koch Industries and leading conservative mega-donor, has set his sights on a new goal: reforming America’s criminal justice system.

In an interview with The Wichita Eagle published Saturday, Koch said his own experiences in courts — including the time a federal grand jury indicted Koch Industries on 97 counts of environmental crimes in 2000 — prompted him to study the justice system at both the state and federal level. In that particular case, centered on a Koch Petroleum Group refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas, prosecutors eventually dropped all but one of the charges after the corporation agreed to pay a settlement.

According to Koch’s chief counsel Mark Holden, the case made the billionaire industrialist wonder “how the little guy who doesn’t have Koch’s resources deals with prosecutions like that,” the Eagle reports.

SNIP

Koch pointed to sentencing as an area in desperate need of reform, arguing that sentences should be “more appropriate to the crime that has been committed.”

His new mission has precipitated some unlikely alliances. The Eagle reports that Koch has unofficially teamed up with progressive mega-donor George Soros and the American Civil Liberties Union to address prison reform. Koch has also earned praise from outgoing U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who told The Marshall Project that Koch’s donation to the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, which funds training for attorneys who represent those in need, was a positive force. According to reports, Koch has been a supporter of the organization since 2004.

I would say pleasantly surprised but in reality they only started caring after something happened to them. It’s not like they read anything about the horrid sentencing guidelines, or for that matter much about the CJS until they were dragged into court. Then again it probably won’t hurt them to push for it since they probably don’t have a lot of money at stake in privatized prisons.

It’s not something the average non-black* person in the US thinks much about unless and until it impacts their lives. Especially if they’re as busy as a CEO typically is. Most substantial non-lawyer advocates for criminal justice system reform came to the cause as a result of their experiences within the justice system.

*: Black people are impacted by the CJS more than others, so they tend to be more aware of it even if they have not been personally effected.

I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that you’ve never come across a rattlesnake in the wild. They are damn near impossible to see and don’t always go off when you get near. If you have an animal with you, as an example, you might need to take drastic measures.

One of the problems with rattlesnake roundups is that they end up killing the rattlers most prone to rattle.

Which means the odd rattlesnake that doesn’t always send out it’s audible warning ends up reproducing and possibly passing that characteristic onto it’s offspring. Making it more potentially dangerous.

There are species of “rattlesnakes” that don’t alert, most notably the Catalina Island Rattlesnake, which doesn’t have any rattle buttons.
