Hilarious Short: El Terror - Wrath of a 4-Year Old

We all scream
Arts • Views: 37,373

Vimeo

A funny New Year’s Day short from a Canadian artist/animator who goes by “Franco.”

In the wild Sonoran desert, the greatest criminal of the Far-West suffers the wrath of a four years old child after stealing her ice cream cone.

I animated this with Toonboom Harmony, and did my backgrounds in photoshop. I used After Effects for compositing, and Adobe Audition for sound.
Huge Thank you to Léa Sanacore for the amazing music (leasanacore.com ),
Lou Victor and Vanessa Bouchard for the voice acting ( louvictork.tumblr.com).

One thing that stands out is how deeply superstitious and religious the Thuggee were. They had dozens of different augurs they’d take for good or bad omens, and rituals meant to address or mitigate the bad ones. In the interviews the captured prisoners all attribute the British success against them to the more recent breaking of longstanding rules and taboos that had protected their clans for centuries. They all honestly believed that strict observance of these rules had protected them, and that normal people (non-thugs) who committed murder were always caught.

The other thing that stands out is the complete and total lack of empathy for their victims.

There is a very simple explanation of why we joke about Christianity more than about other specific religions. No, it’s not because joking about other religions is bigoted (it’s not). It’s because we’re living in Christian-majority societies, so this religion is, indeed, a bit more relevant to us.

I expect an Iranian freethinker to joke more about Islam and an Israeli freethinker to have fun with Judaism.

Criticizing the Taliban isn’t good enough; they want people to criticize the entire religion of Islam and everyone who calls him or herself Muslim. They’re completely preoccupied with it. I see articles all the time where no matter what the subject is, the comments quickly turn into Muslim bashing (and I’m not talking about the usual stuff, I mean truly disgusting, violent, degrading stuff—that’s why I mostly avoid comments now).

Q: Is it true that there is freedom of speech in the Soviet Union, just like in the USA?
A: In principle, yes. In the USA, you can stand in front of the White House in Washington, DC, and yell, “Down with Reagan!”, and you will not be punished. Equally, you can also stand in Red Square in Moscow and yell, “Down with Reagan!”, and you will not be punished.

Seriously. I mean, hey, if you wanna criticize the Taliban, AQ, the MB, ISIS and all the other terrorist/extremist groups, then I’m right there with you. You want to discuss that maybe some aspects of Islam need to be adjusted to the modern world we live in? Fine, let’s talk. But that’s not what some people want—they want to demonize all Muslims and collectively blame them for every bad action done by any Muslim anywhere in the world.

Yep. And honestly I get tired of hearing “Where are all the moderate Muslims? Why aren’t they condemning so and so?” It needs to be pointed out that the majority of Al Queda and other terrorist groups’ victims have been fellow Muslims. And of course plenty of American Muslims died on 9/11 too. The whole attacks on the whole religion combined with the ignorance is what’s maddening.

Heh, I was wondering how it would end:

At the start of 2014, former Seventh-Day Adventist pastor Ryan Bell made an unusual New Year’s resolution: to live for one year without God — this reflecting his own loss of faith. He kept a blog documenting his journey and had a documentary crew following him.

After a year, Bell tells NPR’s Arun Rath, “I’ve looked at the majority of the arguments that I’ve been able to find for the existence of God, and on the question of God’s existence or not, I have to say I don’t find there to be a convincing case, in my view.

“I don’t think that God exists. I think that makes the most sense of the evidence that I have and my experience. But I don’t think that’s necessarily the most interesting thing about me.”

None. It would be interesting to see what would happen if a judge demanded he reveal those sources in court. Real journalists have gone to jail for contempt after refusing to reveal confidential sources. I suspect UpChuck would roll on his faster than lightning.

I notice that he was not terribly busy while I was away, so I had only one GotNwes update to do.

re: #99 CuriousLurker

That’s pure bullshit and I won’t accept it for Muslims any more than I would accept it for atheists, Jews, Christians, blacks, hispanics, white Southerners, etc.

The problem is that there are few rewards for drawing those kinds of distinctions for most media figures and politicians. And attempts to draw distinctions are often quite vulnerable to being deliberately taken out of context by those seeking to make the drawer look bad.

Last, a frequent problem with trying to explain who the bad guys really are and why those who are not terror minded are different is that such explanations take too long and don’t fit into a nice, neat sound byte/ Sadly, if it requires a longish explanation then most people will never hear it.

The thing is, moderate Muslims—which are the vast majority—condemn terrorism all the time. I think they learned after 9/11 that just keeping your head down and sticking to your own won’t cut it.

Muslims in the Middle East are starting to do it too, because they’ve realized the extremists will kill anyone who disagrees with their narrow interpretation of Islam, Muslim, Christian, atheist, it doesn’t really matter. As far as they’re concerned if you disagree then you’re not a Real Muslim™.

FWIW, I have a bunch of bookmarks of instances of Muslims denouncing terrorism. I’ll have to sort them out and turn them into a page one day so people can just link to it when someone claims it never happens. Of course, if you’re dealing with a Pambot or Spencerbot type, they’re just going to claim it’s all taqiyyah anyway, so you’ll be wasting your keystrokes.

The thing is that some nut popping off isn’t seen in the same light as a suicide bombing campaign and very few churches call for violence (few mosques do that either). The problem in both cases lies in fanatical subset of mainstream religions. The subset is more visible and organized in Sunni Islam, but its there in some forms of Christianity as well.

If I see a single lady in a café or in a bar tomorrow, she will be arrested. Take care of your children. A woman should be a mother and the guardian of the home. What kind of mothers can they be after hanging around bars? How can they raise their children? What kind of example are they? Don’t say that she’s so-and-so or such-and-such. All pubs and nightclubs are crammed with females …Do you want to remain an honest person and stay faithful to your husband? Stay at home and work on embroidery. So, I repeat, patrols will be issued a special order - all girls found in bars will be arrested. All of them, I repeat. You know what’s irritating about the way you phrase this? That it’s couched as a problem for the person advocating reason. Instead of identifying the root of the actual issue, that social conservatives all too often aren’t interested in context, nuance or dealing with “the other” in anything but negative lump sum generalities.

Last, a frequent problem with trying to explain who the bad guys really are and why those who are not terror minded are different is that such explanations take too long and don’t fit into a nice, neat sound byte/ Sadly, if it requires a longish explanation then most people will never hear it.

You can couch this a “realism” but it’s really just cynical. All it does is seek to justify avoiding effort at communicating and education. I get why it’s tempting to treat these mindsets as immutable, because they make up the GOP base and it serves Republican interests to cater to them rather than try to change them. But they can be changed and treating the task as without a “reward” isn’t just defeatist, it also comes off as a deliberate strategy to dishearten those who would actually try.

He was a good trainer and took care of his troops and didn’t spend their lives in the kind of fighting needed to win the war. Thankfully Meade & Grant did not suffer from that flaw.

Interesting that by name-dropping Frank James the article hints at the most famous after-effect of the Kansas-Missouri border fighting, that being the James-Younger Gang. The this team of ex-‘bushwackers’ was first well-known example of ex-soldiers turning to bank robbery, though it wouldn’t be the last. They also aimed a number of their attacks at those who had figured notably in the Union cause.

That works. I’ve even got a story to go with it:

‘God was calling me to fight ISIS’: Surf dude ditches watersports job on Costa Rica beach to become a jihadi hunter with Kurds fighting extremists in Syria

An American grandfather has joined the Kurds in the fight against ISIS in Syria after abandoning his idyllic life as a surf instructor in Costa Rica, to wield an AK-47 against the jihadists.

In an interview with MailOnline, Dean Parker, who has no previous military experience, said he ‘heard God’s call’ to take up arms after watching a heartbreaking TV report about the plight of the Yazidi people trapped on Mount Sinjar by Islamic State fighters.

After flying out to Syria, the West Palm Beach, Florida, native has joined the Lions of Rojava - a famous squad of foreign fighters which is part of the Kurdish People’s Protection Unit, known as the YPG.

Well, if he didn’t have previous military experience, at least his trainers taught him proper trigger discipline:

So in this version the serial killer never gets caught, but a bunch of innocent people who are suspected of being him are executed or sent to the Gulag, correct?

In the real-life Chikatilo case, one innocent person was indeed executed for one of his murders - that person was posthumously declared innocent. From what I recall, this chap had confessed, and to the Soviet authorities, that was good enough - they never stopped to think that there’s always “false confessors” who almost invariably turn up. The Soviets actually ended up hassling a lot of otherwise innocent people in their manhunt for Chikatilo before they finally caught him

There was an outstanding HBO made-for-TV film about it. Citizen X. Though I’m looking forward to Child 44, Citizen X is, for me, sort of the go-to film regarding the Beast of Rostov.

I’ve seen Citizen X and it is indeed an excellent movie. Well cast, too, as the dynamic between Stephen Rea and Donald Sutherland’s characters is really allowed to form and grow in the movie. Too often in movies things are made to change between characters as a result of sudden crisis, whereas in Citizen X it shows how two men adapt to each other and become friends over a period of several years.

Max von Sydow’s reluctant hero psychiatrist is also a very well-drawn character.

I’d also add that Jeffrey DeMunn was an exceptional bit of casting as Chikatilo as well. I regard Citizen X as one of the all-time best serial killer/true crime genre films.

So……off to do some shopping. Back later.

The claim that all those taxes were passed as part of Obamacare is patently and absolutely false.

Obamacare did not adjust capital gains, income tax, or estate tax rates at all.

It adjusted payroll tax.

The income tax and capital gains rates that are now in effect (and they were in effect for tax year 2014 as well) were the result of last year’s CR that was passed with bipartisan effort (think way back to the sequester legislation).

IOW, they conflate separate legislation passed at different times to blame it all on Obamacare.

Bono may never play the guitar again.

Bono says he now has a titanium elbow and may never play guitar again due to injuries suffered in a New York City cycling accident.

The 54-year-old U2 frontman suffered multiple injuries, including fractures to his left eye socket, shoulder blade and left elbow, when he crashed his bike in Central Park in November. He required hours of surgery after what doctors called a “high-energy bicycle accident.”

On the band’s website Thursday, Bono said the “recovery has been more difficult than I thought. As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again.”

He added that his bandmates — The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen — “have reminded me that neither they nor Western civilization are depending on this.”

The article also contains photos of fascist fuckwad dictator Bashar Al-Assad visiting his troops and hired militia killers and being shown in and around a BMP-1 (the DM calls it a ‘tank’, which is a common media mistake given the BMP-1’s 73mm recoilless rifle main armament). Mario Cuomo’s 1984 Speech in which his critiques trickle down economics proffered by Ronald Reagan (the Shining City on the Hill is only half the story - the real problem is that this nation is a Tale of Two Cities), and identifies a problem that we’re still dealing with today - that there are the haves and have nots, and the GOP still refuses to do anything about the latter, except to propose legislation that increases benefits to the haves while imposing more burdens on everyone else.

Hi there scaly ones!! Did you miss me? Probably not, but too bad. I’m back. Kind of.

First off, Happy 2015. Let’s hope it sucks less for everyone. I haven’t been around to read how everyone is doing, I’ve just picked up little things by skimming through a few threads. Please take care of yourselves and accept a gentle (((hug))) from me and mine if you wish.

I was off fighting to save my marriage. It looks like I succeeded in bringing The Husband back to solid ground, but there’s lots of damage and mess to clean up (his doing, OMG, I want to strangle him). I don’t get male bonding, I really do not. Married guys, if you have lots of expensive single guy pursuits (Harleys, hunting, NASCAR, etc) and take ALL your vacation time and disposable income (and not disposable income, grrr OMG) and spend it on those things, your wife is going to eventually find out and plot your demise, or at least want to strangle you. She’s also been made into an obstacle to your happiness, which I’m fairly certain she didn’t sign up for. Ahem. And when you promised The Wife a trip of a lifetime for an anniversary and she can’t go because you have an expensive bromance with some idiot friend of yours, let’s just say she’s going to either leave your silly ass or come up with some creative ways of getting your attention. Sigh. Really? Can I sit with the grownups now? Please? And do not get me started on barely participating as a parent. Gah.

The Kid is about to start a new job program, so there’s my good news. He’s been lonely and sad over the holidays, not sure what his parents are going to do about things, not having friends his age to hang with, etc. He’s the best kid ever. He told me the other day he thought I was so beautiful I could be a model(after seeing me dressed up ready to go out, in an actual dress for once) and he would be my agent and help me build self confidence. What 20 yr old kid says that to his mom? My son, that’s who.

Not sure what the new year holds or will bring. Could be a divorce after 22 yrs, but The Husband seems willing to work on things so it won’t come to that- I’m guardedly optimistic. Could be a kid moving out, we’ll see how his job program goes and if he will have room to move forward and earn more than minimum wage and become more confident about driving. Could be a little business I’m trying to start will take wing, I hope so. I’ve created my own formula for an all natural skin salve I’m making in my kitchen. I’ve sold a few, given some away, everyone loves it. Now I have to find commercial grade containers, labels and make up some business cards and the like and work on finding customers.

I hope you all are well. I always miss this place when life gets in the way of me being here. Much love and joy to all of you. For those struggling with anything, I’m there in the trenches with you, let’s keep fighting for what’s worth it and say “fuck it” to what isn’t. (((hugs all around)))

No, its mostly Dems fault because the fires of class warfare burned hotter when the Dems got too close to the far left in the late 1960’s-early 1970’s. They had pulled away from the crazies by 1984, but it of course made no difference, as Walter Mondale lacked Mario Cuomo’s rhetorical gifts and the improving economy and military gave Ronald Reagan a very strong position

Today, the Dems still flirt with the hard left at times (as witness Bill de Blasio) and their anti-business diatribes continue to hand Republicans switches with which the elephant can flog the donkey (holding the switch with its trunk, of course).

It’s not class warfare to point out that the trickle down economics proffered by the right increases the tax burdens on those least able to afford it.

It’s not class warfare to point out that voodoo economics is voodoo - heck, even GHWB recognized it.

The economic policy that is underpinning GOP belief is based on a sham. Identifying that isn’t class warfare; after all, what the GOP is doing is class warfare. Identifying what the GOP is doing isn’t warfare.

The problem is that the GOP hasn’t done anything of the sort - it has cut taxes and you get what you see in Kansas. Tax cuts have made budget deficits even worse, and only fuels further GOP demands for cuts in safety net programs. Heck, the GOP casts a blind eye to corporate welfare all while pushing for drug testing for welfare recipients even though the cost for drug testing significantly exceeds the amount of welfare that might be recovered from those who test positive.

And frankly, the GOP has flipped the script, and they’re promoting the chaos of revolutionary France with their policies while Democrats are seeing London with a stable polity. The GOP wants to tear down the social safety net, wants to see the elimination of the ACA, and wont be satisfied until the government is so small it fits inside lady bits with no care to the real world consequences.

From TPM: Report: New Congress Dumping CBO Chief To Clear Way For Special GOP Budget Math

Over the past few months Republicans have renewed their focus on changing the way CBO scores budgets if they were to take control of the Senate and keep control of the House of Representatives. Dynamic scoring calculates budgets through a controversial view that tax cuts both create economic growth and counter lost revenue. Currently the CBO does not use dynamic scoring

As Businesweek explained, “the immediate effect has been to blow a hole in the state’s finances without noticeable economic growth.”

Even with the cut in taxes, big companies like Applebee’s and Boeing have moved out of Kansas.

Why?

Because conservative economics doesn’t actually work. It is a faith based program untethered from reality. The numbers don’t add up and it is destructive to societies.

But this won’t deter them. They’ll do it again. They’ll go to the well and bring up another bucket full of excrement and tell the true believers that it’s spring water.

You are assuming there is no such thing as class warfare in America. Facts say otherwise. There is a significant minority of corporate types, most of whom are conservative Republicans or conservatarians, who are doing their damnedest to preserve their situations while making it more difficult for the middle class to move upward. Their efforts to gut public education, make it difficult for kids to afford college, bash unions are just a few examples.

What’s stupefying is that Brownback, after completely fucking over the state economy, still managed to get re-elected. Albeit with a much tighter margin (49% to 46%).

Still, think about that it for a minute: a majority of Kansas voters looked at how Brownback made their lives much, much harder and said, “Let’s give him another chance.”

Brownback’s Tax Policy May Be An Even Bigger Failure

Earlier this week it was revealed that the state of Kansas may miss revenue goals by $1 billion over the next two years under Governor Sam Brownback’s economic regime, but it may be even worse than that according to analysis from The Upshot at the New York Times.

Apparently the estimates released by the state may be a bit too optimistic.

Kansas: Here Come the Spending Cuts

These are the actions Brownback will take to fill holes in the current budget for the fiscal year, but this only the beginning of the state’s problems.

Brownback’s plan is to cut taxes each year between now and 2018 and current projections show that Kansas will fall short of its revenue goals by over $1 billion over the next two years alone. And it could be even worse than that.

Brownback’s budget director, Shawn Sullivan, says they do not plan to revisit the governor’s tax cuts and, if they hold true to that, the state can look forward to massive spending cuts every single year that his policy remains in place and beyond that.

This is fiscal responsibility?
Lol.

What a shock. My own marriage of 36 years looked to be sinking a little over a year ago. In our case it was because we had put so much of our focus on our autistic son that we’d become strangers and both of us behaved badly at the realization. We separated for a bit more than a year to give ourselves some time to decide whether or not we really did want to continue on and, if so, what we’d change. That came at it’s own cost because because we’re far from wealthy. It worked, so far. We’re happy to be together again and although our son must remain a focus we’re absolutely taking time for each other and we’re talking openly and honestly about what’s going on between us every day.

Father and son arrested after shootout with cops in WVa had two bodies in truck.

Two men were arrested after one of them allegedly shot two West Virginia police officers during a traffic stop in Lewisburg Thursday — and then were found to be transporting two dead bodies in their vehicle, authorities said.

The suspects are reportedly a father and son from Texas, with the father being the shooter, according to NBC affiliate WVVA. The names of the men arrested were not released, and the Lewisburg police officers were wounded and expected to survive, West Virginia State Police said.

The officers were shot after they pulled over a sport-utility vehicle with stolen license plates at 4 p.m. on Interstate 64, and a red Chevrolet pickup truck that might have been following that car pulled over as well, police said.

The driver of the pickup pulled out a handgun and shot both officers, police said. Donna Hinkle, director of administration at the Greenbrier County 911 Center, told NBC News that one was shot in the ribs but was wearing a bulletproof vest, and the other was grazed.

One of the officers returned fire and wounded the driver of the SUV, the alleged shooter’s son, in the leg.

Oh, these two seem real nice.

The whole notion is that the budget shortfalls demand budget cuts, and he’s feeding the whole notion that the government spending needs to be sliced and diced, but it’s a self-fulfilling prophesy.

Cut taxes, invite shortfall, demanding budget cuts.

That’s the entire plan, no matter the consequences to public education (which the courts have already found insufficient), or that revenue projections continue falling short because tax cuts are not causing any job creation or new revenues to offset the tax cuts.

The Dems have kept that sort of class war rhetoric up ass end of forever. When Republicans are sharp they can defeat it by speaking to opportunity and making sure people have a chance to move up and prosper rather than being weighed down by the morass of government excess.

If the Dems want to use A Tale of Two Cities, Republicans should be proud to be prosperous and traditional London in that example, and leave the Dems the role of chaotic, poor, and murderous revolutionary Paris.

re: #280 Dark_Falcon

New year, same old shit from you. Regulating Wall Street isn’t anti-business. And your Limbaugh-esque use of the term class warfare is mindless partisan hack work.

I would refer you to the words of America’s greatest modern day capitalist, Warren Buffet: “Sure there’s class warfare…and my class is winning, as we always do.” He actually meant that as a humorous critique of right wing economic thought. He’s a super-rich guy willing to criticize the other super-rich. Whereas you’re a non-rich guy unwilling to criticize the rich, but quite willing to kiss their asses and carry rhetorical water for them. What a sad and oblivious little tool you are.

If you’re able to run Traceroute you might want to append the results of a Tracerout from your PC to your website to the support request. If those of us here are not having problems loading your page then the culprit is likely one of the routers between you and it.

re: #347 wheat-dogghazi-bola-trality

Good idea. I’ll give it a try.

First part of the slowdowns are in China, with backbone routers. So, the censors must be in high gear analyzing traffic for some reason. Second set of slowdowns are stateside, beginning with atlas.cogentco.com and onward till tracert reaches my site. Each router hit takes at least 200 ms, and there are no less than 12 hops between the first China backbone router and my site.

So, pretty weird shit.

Let’s be clear about this:

The current turmoil in NYC isn’t over charter schools and horse carriages. It’s because the NYPD is basically saying they answer to no one but themselves, and the mayor had the audacity to point out that even his son is a potential harassment (or something much, much worse) victim due to skin color.

Yes, and some of what is being reported isn’t too comforting.

Speaking of a Conservatives disillusionment with the American Myth of Goodness and Godliness … .

Remember this movie?

Missing-Trailer

What is so well portrayed by Jack Lemon is the slow descent from ardent believe and defense of the American Myth to a quivering, begging, broken father just wanting to know what happened to his child.

In the end, he rallies and sues Henry Kissinger. A revived hope in the Dream, but much less in the realm of blind faith.

I have been reminded of this a lot lately.

The two men who shot at WVa Police have now been identified, as have the 2 victims found in the back of their truck.

Eric Campbell, 21 and his father, Edward Campbell, 54, face charges of attempted murder and malicious assault, said West Virginia State Police spokesman Lt. Michael Baylous. Both men were last known to be living in Texas.

The pair were arrested following a traffic stop on Interstate 64 near the Lewisburg exit at around 4 p.m. Thursday, Baylous said.

Lewisburg police officers Jeromy Dove and Nicholas Sams pulled over a white Chevrolet SUV that was reported stolen from North Carolina. When the officers pulled over the SUV, a red Chevrolet pickup truck also pulled off of the road, Baylous said.

A man in the truck allegedly pulled a gun and fired at both city police officers, hitting them both, Baylous said.

One of the officers returned fire, striking Edward Campbell in the leg, Baylous said. He said Edward Campbell fled on foot, and Eric Campbell, who had allegedly been driving the SUV, sped off in the red pickup truck. Baylous said Eric Campbell drove into a wooded area near the interstate and hid, but gave himself up to police a short time later. Both Eric and Edward Campbell were arrested without further incident.

While searching the truck, police found two dead bodies hidden under a mattress in the back. Authorities have identified them as Jerome Faulkner, 73, and his wife, Dora, 62. Their home in Granville County, North Carolina, was burned earlier Thursday and their SUV stolen, authorities said.

The two officers are still hospitalized, but are expected to make full recoveries.

There are still plenty of questions that have yet to be answered about this duo’s intentions and what else these two may have done.

re: #280 Dark_Falcon

You really think social justice = anti-business?

Wanting to use the a centralized government to administer entitlements does not equal communism.

Like it or not those who are really, really good a Capitalism have made conditions that make it impossible for a great many of the common people to EARN A LIVING WAGE.

They continue to cry TAXES AND REGULATIONS, when in fact we have lower taxes than most of hour history and fewer regulations than CATO and Heritage would lead you to believe.

And with that, those who are really, really greedy nearly ruined the word’s economy.

Don’t give me your anti-business memorized bullshit.

Those who are really, really good a capitalism will do whatever it takes to lower wages, create monopolies and write regulations to suit there bottom line.

No one economic system is the most just. No human can be trusted not to make conditions best for themselves.

Also, the NYPD has made it clear through the Eric Garner incident that they will use deadly force for the most trivial of crimes.

To be fair, though, the officer who used a chokehold on Garner was not trying to kill him. He screwed up badly, and ought to lose his job (he should get a short prison sentence, but that’s not going to happen) but his intent was not lethal.

Number Of Homeless Children In America Surges To All-Time High: Report

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The number of homeless children in the U.S. has surged in recent years to an all-time high, amounting to one child in every 30, according to a comprehensive state-by-state report that blames the nation’s high poverty rate, the lack of affordable housing and the impacts of pervasive domestic violence.

Titled “America’s Youngest Outcasts,” the report being issued Monday by the National Center on Family Homelessness calculates that nearly 2.5 million American children were homeless at some point in 2013. The number is based on the Department of Education’s latest count of 1.3 million homeless children in public schools, supplemented by estimates of homeless pre-school children not counted by the DOE.

re: #274 A Mom Anon

Dark, if he was a civie and not hiding behind his badge, his “intent” wouldn’t have kept his ass from being convicted on a reckless homicide charge. There’s a reason that chokeholds have been banned by NYPD policy.

Given their overall attitudes, I wouldn’t be at all surprised. That being said, I can also imagine that ISIS would employ some shall we say, ‘extreme’ containment measures.

oh but i was told by several people that were very confident about their grasp of political theory that the definition of socialism is “redistribution of income” so it should be obvious that all taxes are ipso facto socialist

hey - they seemed to think i was quite slow for not realizing how obvious this is

That would be the Sovereign Citizen logic, IIRC.

The thing to remember here, ED, is that those were generic wingnuts and I’m not a generic wingnut. I’m conservative, to be sure, but not a wingnut.

It’s not a socialist tax, I might tell you. It’s a tax that falls harder on poor people, while middle and upper class people who travel can get cigarettes at lower prices from states with less tax.

I don’t know who does that unless it’s back East where states are teeny and it doesn’t take long to go from one state to another. I don’t think that happens out west.

Is this a thing, or one of CCJs delusions?

I don’t follow him, but I see his tweets are now protected so I can’t read them unless I follow him…he’s up about 1,500 followers since yesterday, which is over a 10% bump.

I don’t know much about how twitter works, but it seems to me that if you protect your account, you would get a bump in followers from anonymous readers who want to keep viewing your tweets.

Nuanced? All I did was to examine the effect of the tax. That it hits poor people hardest was printed in National Review, for Heaven’s sake.

I’m not a fan of ‘sin taxes’ but I feel that I should at least understand their effects.

To be fair, though, the officer who used a chokehold on Garner was not trying to kill him. He screwed up badly, and ought to lose his job (he should get a short prison sentence, but that’s not going to happen) but his intent was not lethal.

Oh, when you put it that way, it makes Eric Garner’s death not such a big deal after all.

Jesus Christ, dude…

The two biggest “scary foreign things” of 2014 have combined into one super scary 2015 story:

ISIS fighters ‘have contracted Ebola’: World Health Organisation investigating reports militants showed up at Iraqi hospital with lethal disease

The sick part is that the Daily Mail actually has better coverage of the fight against ISIS than CNN.

It’s the Daily Mail. There’s no confirmation that anything they reported is indeed fact.

I’ve decided I’m going to sell all my guitars and start selling aluminum picks.

My spouse used to complain about how many guitars I own. She’d always say “you can only play one at a time so why do you need so many?”. So every concert we attended after that, she’d get a gentle elbow every time the guitarist changed guitars…now she doesn’t complain.

She also does show quality quilting. And I’d ask, how many sewing machines do you need, you can only use one at a time?

Marriage can be interesting ;)

This is the thing with the RW publications.

1-They state a fact (problem of the human condition).
2-They commiserate in the emotion illicited by the fact.
3-They give an overview of likely causes
4-They show the negative aspects of any cause for which a resolution might involve public money.
4-They zero in on any cause for which the Individual Free Will was the sole reason for the fact to come about.
5-They give examples of said Individuals with Free Will who made choices that turned out badly for them.
6-They show outrage that those who used their Individual Free Will that found a bad outcome would want or expect their fellow taxpayers to give their money to help them.
7-The blame and turn their backs in justified moral outrage and a feeling of superiorty.

When, in fact, it’s all about I got mine, you sucker.

So talking about Eric Garner and the tyranny of individual police officers and a system that promotes their behavior is minimized by and sidelined by
focusing on minute aspects of the case.

Sin Taxes?

Eric Garner was not a threat to the officers bodies or lives.

They escalated the situation.

The shopkeeper would have probably been happy if they gave Eric a Warning for Loitering and he went on his way.

Instead he died.

FOR FREAKING LOITERING.

re: #465 Dr Lizardo

My understanding was that the claims that ISIL fighters had become infected with Ebola was originating in Kurdish areas of Iraq. This may be a play to get more international attention on fighting ISIL in Iraq, and to get more resources to the area, but it’s hard to determine whether anyone has Ebola or not when medical resources are limited, and there are several other diseases that have similar symptoms (malaria, Marburg, etc.).
