Why Does the Media Trust the Word of a White Supremacist?

David Duke’s friend says Steve Scalise is cool, so let’s just forget it ever happened
Media • Views: 36,831

It looks like America’s pundit classes have decided it’s no big deal that House Majority Whip Steve Scalise pals around with white supremacists. Here’s a finger-wagging article at the New York Observer berating everyone who thought there was actually an important story here: It’s Time for a Slow Journalism Movement.

Various media outlets, for their part, repeated the story and offered their own editorial spin. But then, a strange thing happened. A few diligent reporters began to check around, make a few calls and do a bit of research, an arcane set of activities collectively known as journalism, and found that the story simply wasn’t true. It turns out that Mr. Scalise is apparently guilty of speaking to a civic association in the Metarie, Louisiana Best Western Hotel, a few hours before the EURO meeting was held in the same spot. One of the organizers of the EURO meeting was also a leader of the civic association, but to fault Mr. Scalise for that is guilt by too many degrees of association.

We’ll just note that the sole “witness” who supposedly debunked this story is long-time David Duke associate and confirmed neo-Nazi Kenny Knight — who also happens to be a friend of Steve Scalise. But this is supposed to be “guilt by too many degrees of association?”

Nobody thinks it’s a little strange that a top Republican politician has neo-Nazi friends?

Knight very obviously has a motive for lying about Scalise’s speech; as a white supremacist, he wants to protect an influential politician who’s sympathetic to their twisted cause.

But this apparently doesn’t occur to people like the author of this piece, who suddenly finds the word of David Duke’s right hand man to be perfectly credible, without a single bit of corroborating evidence.

This is one of those times when it seems like the whole media establishment has lost its freaking mind.

This is part of the trend to make sure whites get back to being the ones in charge (I say this as a white person). It might have been fashionable to elect a black man in 2008, but the trend towards making sure it doesn’t happen again is to make racism once again mainstream.

The Quiverfull movement is an attempt to outbreed brown people.

I really don’t understand where the movement thinks we are going to put all these brown and pink people. How we are going to feed them?

Oh, I forgot, it’s not our responsibility to feed and cloth them. They have to work.

Here’s the story, just so folks know:

Sarah Palin photos of son stepping on dog trigger online outrage

Facebook photos posted by Sarah Palin showing her son Trig using the family dog as a step stool unleashed online fury on Friday reminiscent of the public reaction to the disclosure that Mitt Romney had once driven with his dog strapped on the car’s roof.

Trig, 6, who has Down Syndrome, is shown stepping on the back of the family’s black Labrador while it lies on the kitchen floor in order to reach the sink. The dog appears unruffled.

The Facebook post by Palin, who was the Republican vice presidential nominee in 2008, drew more than 12,000 comments by midday Friday, ranging from cries of animal abuse to those seconding Palin’s praise for the youngest of her five children.

“May 2015 see every stumbling block turned into a stepping stone on the path forward,” Palin wrote on her Facebook page.

“Trig just reminded me. He, determined to help wash dishes with an oblivious mama not acknowledging his signs for ‘up!’, found me and a lazy dog blocking his way. He made his stepping stone,” Palin wrote.

Since the conservatives have not been electorally punished much* for their decade plus cozy relationship with the right-wing nuts they will become more open about it. Or more willing to just make a few denials and watch it disappear into the news cycle. And since even the establishment is enmeshed in this it’s probably pretty easy for them to warn the mainstream media off - since the modern media is afraid of being denied access and “scoops”. Especially since they’ve given up doing independent journalism.

* - They’ve lost the White House a few times, but otherwise are holding the House solidly, about to get control of the Senate, and have a lot of control in the various states.

But the other thing is a highly specific debate over a very resolvable controversy not about police as people, but about how police are deployed. Most people, and police most of all, agree that the best use of police officers is police work. They shouldn’t be collecting backdoor taxes because politicians are too cowardly to raise them, and they shouldn’t be pre-emptively busting people in poor neighborhoods because voters don’t have the patience to figure out some other way to deal with our dying cities.

This police protest, ironically, could have shined a light on all of that. Instead, it’s just more fodder for our ongoing hate-a-thon. Happy New Year, America.

I’ve seen nothing to object to in any comments I saw here or on twitter. No one has been critical of the child who doesn’t know any better. The criticism is of the parent who hasn’t taught him any better and instead praises him for doing something that will harm his best buddy if it continues. She’s oblivious, by her own admission.

It is assumed by modern journalism that all sides are equally valid. You cannot call a turd ‘a turd’. It has to be ‘feces’.

‘Feces’ sounds like it isn’t anything like a turd and that gives the turds the opportunity to spread their shit around.

Newt Gingrich, the Times tells us, also has some misgivings about the GOP’s long-time support for certain policies — e.g., mandatory-minimums, controversial policing practices, and the general rise of the carceral state — that are now being scrutinized in the popular press as policy failures (though scholars from many social science disciplines have been calling attention to these issues for some time). Charles Koch, the famous libertarian donor-cum-fundraising ringleader, also plans to highlight criminal justice issues this year.

However, other Republican opinion leaders like John Bolton dismiss this rethinking:

“What some who call themselves libertarians are doing, whether it’s on national security or these other issues, is in reality much closer to the Democrats, and that’s why they’re getting such national attention,” said John R. Bolton, a former United Nations ambassador, in a phone interview, saying Mr. Paul “has a lack of history and education” on crime-related issues.

40 lawhawk  Jan 2, 2015 12:34:03pm

Are we supposed to be surprised that cops are shot at on average of once every couple of days, and that a similar number of unarmed civilians are killed once every few days at the hands of law enforcement?

Hundreds are killed by law enforcement every year. Around 100 cops are killed every year in the line of duty.

This is what happens when there is an unfettered and unhealthy need to be armed, and a refusal to allow for even reasonable restrictions that might reduce the number of illegal weapons on the streets.

As we see here in NYC, the majority of firearms used in criminal acts are from the Iron Pipeline - from PA, VA, and on down to the Carolinas. Chicago sees a similar route into Texas and the South. Places with strong gun laws see the firearms sourced from places where gun laws are lax. That’s not by accident.

But daring asking to do something about that risks the ire of the NRA and gun-right absolutists, even though it means dead cops and dead civilians all around the nation. There’s a body count that continues to add to the butcher’s bill.

Scarcity produces value
When there is an abundance of workers, wages go down, down, down.

There are already places that employ children in the US. .

On a warm day last summer Josh Bassais, a union organizer, went down to a non-union construction project in Edina, a Minneapolis suburb where new elementary classrooms were being built, to check out safety on the site.

He saw something surprising: a boy, who appeared to be about 12 or 13, wearing jeans and a fluorescent work vest, smoothing mortar on a brick wall. It was a clear violation of child-labor laws, which prohibit 12 and 13-year-olds from working most jobs, except on farms, and also say that youths aged 14 and 15 may not work in hazardous jobs, including construction.

It’s the revolving suspension policy of Twitter that is designed to maximize outrage and page views - eyeballs are all that Twitter cares about. Getting rid of trolls, let alone those that dox or pose threats to other people (or actually threaten other people) is an afterthought to Twitter. The company simply doesn’t want to ban these people because it would hit the bottom line, even if all too many of them buy page views/eyeballs/followers who spread the noxious nonsense far and wide.

It’s called “The View from Nowhere,” and is less about fair/balance, journalistic ethics or anything else like that … and more about the money. Useta be newspapers (when there were multiple papers in any town of any size) had strong editorial stances. You knew what you were getting when you bought, say, the Chicago Tribune when it was owned by the Colonel. Then media consolidation. And so, rather than risk offending any potential audience member, the owners started insisting on producing these mealymouthed he-said/she-said stories, that gave lip service to both sides, so that nobody could claim they were being ignored.

It’s what’s led to the false equivalency that has hurt us so badly on things like Climate Change. And vaccinations. And background checks for firearm sales.

Most major metro areas had several newspaper outlets, each with their own journalistic slant.

In NYC alone you had a bunch, but that’s been whittled down to 3. More than a few areas have just one. That means fewer reporters covering crime stories, investigating corruption by elected officials, doing long form journalism, and more wire reports that cover just the basics. And none of this is good for informing the public.

It’s not even that good for the bottom line of these companies, since people are getting information elsewhere (not necessarily correct info, but it’s out there, and people are relying on it - see, News, Fox).

Another two officers shot in W. VA

BECKLEY, W. Va. (Reuters) - A Texas father and son on a multi-state crime spree killed a North Carolina couple, set their home on fire, stole their truck and then shot and wounded two police officers in West Virginia, authorities said on Friday.

Police arrested the men in West Virginia on Thursday after a shootout in which the officers were slightly wounded. West Virginia State Police identified the suspects as Edward Campbell, 54, and Eric Campbell, 21, of Indian Acres, Texas.

The father-son crime wave “is something you see in the movies. It’s unreal,” Sheriff Brindell Wilkins of North Carolina’s Granville County told Raleigh’s WRAL television.

Wilkins said the Campbells were driving a stolen SUV and allegedly broke into the home of Jerome Faulkner, 73, and his wife, Dora, 62, near Oak Hill, North Carolina, about 7 a.m. on Thursday.

The pair set the house on fire, killed the couple and loaded the bodies into the Faulkner’s red pickup before driving off in both vehicles to West Virginia, Wilkins said.

This is a horrific crime spree, yet for some reason it is not all over cable news or social media. Maybe because the perps are two white guys from TX.

It’s also referenced here. According to the article Buckley changed his views, but his 2004 “clarification” sounds awfully weaselly to me:

In 2004, he clarified his comments, saying, “the point I made about white cultural supremacy was sociological” and linking his usage of the word “Advancement” to its usage in the name NAACP, continued, “The call for the ‘advancement’ of colored people presupposes they are behind. Which they were, in 1958, by any standards of measurement.” Buckley changed his views and by the mid-1960s renounced racism. This change was caused in part because he became appalled at the violence used by white supremacists during the Civil Rights Movement, and in part because of the influence of friends like Garry Wills, who confronted Buckley on the morality of his politics. Given the previous articles and final letter I expect that if they have any say in the matter Leelah Alcorn will disappear from history as effectively as if Stalin had ordered it done.

Help me out here, Lizards. There was a movie from the mid-1980s, a Disney animated flick, and I remember it was really dark. It was rated PG, which was sorta unprecedented.

I can’t remember the title. It had a villain that looked like he walked out of an Iron Maiden album cover, and it was pretty grim for a Disney animated film.

Good advice to NRO from Charles P. Pierce:

If you’re Rich (Sparkle Pants) Lowry, and you are the editor of the longtime white-supremacist journal National Review, maybe you give a pass to reviewing a movie about the events in Selma, Alabama in 1965, if only because your publication lined up behind the members of the Alabama State Patrol and did everything but hand them fresh truncheons.

Maybe you review Into The Woods, or some other, less freighted holiday fare. You certainly don’t propose, from your seat atop a pile of phonebooks on WFB’s old chair, to teach us “the real lesson” of the movie…

I remember a sci-fi film Disney did (live action) in the late 70s or maybe early 80s, The Black Hole. It was pretty decent, and quite dark for a Disney movie. If I’m not entirely mistaken, that led to the creation of Touchstone Pictures, as an outlet for films of a more mature nature.

A South Jersey man was shot and killed by police on Tuesday, but the circumstances are still not clear, though a gun was revealed during the motor vehicle stop. What is clear is that the man who was killed was a convicted felon who had previously been imprisoned as a teen for shooting at police. He had been sentenced to 15 years in prison, but was released on parole.

Jerame C. Reid, the man who was shot and killed by Bridgeton City Police on Tuesday night, previously served 13 years in prison on attempted murder and other charges for shooting at New Jersey State Troopers when he was a teenager, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

Reid, 36, of Millville was killed Tuesday after the car he was riding in was stopped by police at South Avenue and Henry Street. Reid, the passenger, was shot after a handgun was “revealed” during the traffic stop, the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office said. Both police officers, Braheme Days and Roger Worley, fired their weapons, investigators said.

There’s no word on how he came to be in presence of a firearm this time.

Did Reid actually pull out a gun and point it?

Really open-ended and indefinite a term to use. “Revealed” could mean he pulled it out, it was in the glove compartment that he opened to get the registration, or possibly just sitting somewhere and then seen by the officer.

Yeah, the article is short on specifics to be sure. Revealed is an odd choice of words for an incident involving firearms. Was it found in the midst of a search of the vehicle- not in possession of a person, or was it found on him. And why did it end it gunfire.

Looking around a bit for more on the actual incident, it looks like the gun may have been in the car, and that the man may have been going for it when he was shot.

Or not.

I paid a small amount online for an anti-malware ap with a CC about 02 August, at a time I was sure the charge would be accepted. I got the software right away, and the activation key was provided in the same session as the payment. That key and an extra limited-time DL link were also provided by email.

In November, I noticed a strange CC charge for the sum that I thought had already been paid in Aug. My online statement indicated that the payment info had been entered manually at a POS terminal. Between Aug and Nov, my card had expired and been re-issued with a different number, exp date, etc. By reviewing all transactions back to 01 August, I learned that the charge in Nov was legit. Apparently they had not yet applied the charge by the time my old CC expired. So they charged my new CC. More than 90 days after my on-line purchase.

Apparently, not all aspects of my online order were highly automated. But I’m satisfied with the ap.

Temperatures mess with flies big time. It warms up a bit and they come out of hibernation or a new batch hatches. Then it gets cold again and the ones now out and about s-l-o-w—w-a-y—d-o-w-n. When cold they just sorta stop and hang out, probably going back into a hibernation period. They probably fly to a warm spot—-a human, or humans by light, kitchen warmed by stove, dishwasher, etc., and that is why you see them.

Damn flies.

By the way…I found a new way to tell I am getting older. I went to watch the big playoff college football games at a friend’s house last night. The Ohio State game was a classic game in all ways. It was almost better than a pro game…some probably think it was better.

You know, there’s another film I would remake if I could.

Wonderland.

It’s a 2003 film about the Four on the Floor Murders, or The Wonderland Murders, that ostensibly involved porn legend John Holmes. The film had some great stars, Val Kilmer was perfect as Holmes, Eric Bogosian as Eddie Nash was spot on, but it needed a better screenplay and tighter direction.

The opening credits (quite safe for work) are here. This is a film that could be remade and with the right screenplay and director, it’d be Oscar-worthy.

WONDERLAND intro

And when things get real bad do we start eating our own, or deflecting by going for some costly foreign adventuring? Not to mention that some of the nightmarish SF scenarios are coming closer and closer to being possible regarding biological or high tech warfare.

I’m not looking for genetic purity-just the opposite in fact. I won’t bore you with the details, but if my retro-reflectively white daughter and her Asian husband ever get around to giving us grandchildren (totally their call,) those kids will have immune systems that can deal with anything (or they’ll fail and catch absolutely everything…) Said daughter and son-in-law never catch any viruses from each other. Their kids should rule the world, genetic fitness-wise.

re: #141 Dr Lizardo

And before I call it a day, it’s my personal opinion that Holmes participated in the Wonderland Murders.

Holmes claimed that Eddie Nash threatened to kill his loved ones if Holmes didn’t spill the beans as to who had robbed Mr. Nash earlier. Seeing as how Holmes had set up that robbery, he told Nash who was behind it.

Holmes claimed he was held at gunpoint against a wall by one of the gang of killers while the Wonderland Gang was beaten to death with iron pipes - however, this account fails to reveal how John was, according to his first wife, “….covered in blood” when he came to their residence the morning after the murders. Nor does it explain how Holmes’ bloody palm print ended up on the headboard railing on the bed where Ron Launius died.

In any event, we’ll never know. But I’m pretty damned sure that Holmes participated - directly - in the murders. Even his first wife is of that opinion, as well as an ex-mistress. Holmes is of course long dead, and Eddie Nash has had nothing further to say on the subject, so we’ll never find out from either of them.

The Wonderland Murders officially remain unsolved.

And with that, goodnight, Lizards.

As far as Uber goes, I am finding myself utterly disgusted by the antics of their management. Having said that, I would still prefer to patronize a business whose executives treat journalists (et al) poorly than taxi drivers who treat ME poorly and charge way too much.

Of course, I have no choice when I arrive here at Chicago O’Hare. Uber has been banned from the premises and the CTA now tacks a $5 surcharge on top of the usual fare on the train, so it is not economical for me to use that in order to reach a place where I could use Uber. Instead I have to get into a cab where I am destined to disappoint a driver who has just had his fantasy of a huge fare to the city shattered by my 4 mile ride home just north of the airport. As a result about 50% of the time I get horrible service including having the meter turned on before the driver leaves the car to do paperwork with the dispatcher (illegal), having the driver refuse to use the route I request (also illegal) and in one instance being verbally assaulted by a driver for complaining about the above.

Forgive me if I am not sufficiently outraged at Uber.

ALMOST like an Annie Leibovitz —the photographer has so much to do with it.

Who’s the photog? Is that the WH photog? (I forget his name atm) I’d imagine they have an outside portrait specialist for that.

(also, slightly on this topic, I’m not too impressed with AL’s portrait work in capturing that kind of emotion. She seems much more gritty, for lack of a better term - ymmv)

Add to that, she’s getting old. She might be the Democrats’ Bob Dole.

Yes, the party that put up John McCain is really going to have a lot to say about Mrs. Clinton’s age.

I have a book of hers discussing various portrait work she’s done. I would file her into the more “photojournalistic/environmental portrait” category. I agree, it’s a signature style, and one I respect, as well. Portraits are a PITA (not as much as weddings, though).

No, i don’t think she would want to be the wedding photog …

LOL

The best job in the world.

re: #250 wheat-dogghazi-bola-trality

Thanks! Souza was the WH photog I was thinking of. I’m sorta surprised that they went to him for a shot like that, but I guess he’s had a long relationship with them (and gotten some great shots over the years), so he gets to take those as well.

Imagine, though, the jealousy and rage from all the other photogs who complain about not getting enough “access” to Obama. That must wear on you, some. Interestingly, he also worked as WH photog during Reagan’s second term.

I don’t know.

I think back to the old court artisans who had to paint portraits for the aristocracy —if they weren’t happy with the results … .

With photography it is harder to mask some of the unfortunate realities.

Even tho we think the Obamas have nothing to hide, everyone is sensitive to their own appearance —to the minutiae.

I always like the photos of them with kids. President and First Lady Obama both look so relaxed and set the kids at ease.

Every shot is a public record so, legally, it should be none. Lots archived though.

OT, but I just want to remind you what a gorgeous couple the President and the First Lady makes:

Embedded Image

She’s an attractive woman. Those who call her “Moochelle” are not only classless assholes but they don’t know an attractive woman when they see one.And yeah they’re a nice couple. Nice kids too.

note please that in 2016 she will be the same age that reagan was when he ran for president in 1980 and her mental acuity and physical vigor compares favorably with the aging actor

I was going to comment the same. She’s going to be the same age Reagan was and unlike Reagan doesn’t show signs of losing her mental vigor. She appears sharp as ever. I am not a huge Hillary fan but I think it’s as bratwurst already said eye roll worthy for the party that nominated McCain and Reagan to make hay out of Hillary Clinton’s age. But hey like that’s never stopped them before. The party that panders to the man who mainstreamed the phrase Feminazi was equating every single liberal criticism of Palin in ‘08 with sexism.

Love these photos. Here’s the caption from the famous President Tiara photo FYI, more to the story!

“This photograph was from the annual White House Science Fair. It shows the President posing with Girl Scout Troop 2612 from Tulsa, Oklahoma. I think the 8-year-old girls — Avery Dodson, Natalie Hurley, Miriam Schaffer, Claibyre Winton and Lucy Claire Sharp — are called ‘Brownies.’ They had just shown the President their exhibit: a Lego flood-proof bridge project. The fair celebrated the student winners of a broad range of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) competitions from across the country.”

One of the things I like most about POTUS is his sense of humor. He had a lot of fun trolling Donald Trump with the birther thing especially at the one White House Correspondent’s Dinner and I still remember Trump’s face. He was pissed because POTUS took him to school and just showed how stupid the whole birther movement is.

This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of Purple Rain, the movie, soundtrack, and single that made Prince a star and incited a generation to “look for the purple banana”—whatever that might be. From the film’s very first shot, showing a backlit Prince on stage at Minneapolis’s First Avenue nightclub incanting the opening words of “Let’s Go Crazy,” we knew we were in for a sticky, syrupy, irresistible treat.

STOP, I CAN’T GET ANY OLDER!!!!!

269 #FergusonFireside  Jan 2, 2015 9:01:29pm

This is another great one.

June 9, 2014
“Chief of Staff Denis McDonough came to the Oval Office one afternoon and said to the President, ‘let’s take a walk.’ So they proceeded outside the White House gates to a Starbucks on Pennsylvania Avenue. On the way back, the President stopped to greet street vendor Saied Abedy, who was born in Afghanistan. I later selected this photograph to hang as a ‘jumbo’ print on the walls of the West Wing. Several months later, after the jumbo print had been replaced with a newer photograph, we were tipped off that a White House staff member was giving Mr. Abedy and his family a tour of the West WIng one night. So we retrieved the jumbo print of him and hung it back on the walls of the West Wing. I later heard how emotional his family became when they saw the photograph on their tour.”
