And on that note:

Greek oil tanker bombed in Libyan port of Derna

Libyan air force jets have bombed a Greek-operated oil tanker chartered by Libya’s national oil company, killing two crew members.

A Libyan military spokesman told the BBC that the ship’s movements at the port of Derna had aroused suspicion.

The oil company rejected this, saying the ship was delivering fuel to industrial facilities there and the authorities had been kept informed.

Derna has been controlled by Islamist militants for the past two years.

The Libyan military attacked the port several times last year in an attempt to weaken militant groups there.

The military spokesman, Colonel Ahmed Mesmari, said the tanker had been targeted because it had failed to submit to an inspection before entering the port.

He said the vessel was supposed to dock at a power plant in Derna but instead “took a different route”, entering a “military zone”.

“We asked the ship to stop, but instead it turned off all its lights and would not respond so we were obliged to strike it.

“We bombed it twice,” he said.

Your equating the dispensationalists with all of the “evangelicals”. Yet the Dominionists were driven by Reformation-era dogma, and have slowly gained ground in the traditionally dispensationalist (and often Baptist and staunch separation of church and state) congregations. One just has to see how Mullah Mohler and his cohorts have been changing the SBC.

There were always fundamentalists who have been out there apart from the main group of American evangelicals. The era of Billy-Graham type “evangelicals” appears to be coming to an end, and the more anti-papist, anti-Jewish reformation-era crowd appears to be growing in influence again.

What is old is new again.

Interesting that O’Reilly chose to play down that part of Duke’s message.
From his autobiography:

“In modern America, Jews lead the effort to de-Christianize America. … They share little of the heritage of the Old Testament people called the Israelites. … Communism and Zionism were born from the same Jewish soul. … Jewish power is ubiquitous. … It is not a [Jewish] conspiracy. It is simply two nations — Jew and Gentile — in a state of ethnic war.”

Between that, and the disgraced TV evangelists, and Mr. Family Radio at the end, there has been what I think a big change that many of the (more “liberal”, that is non-religious) media appear to be missing - the change of Christianity in America.

It’s an under reported story.

re: #65 teleskiguy

Also from the 80’s:

In the 1980s, Iran Outfitted F-14s as Heavy Bombers

But wait, it turns out that the US had a hand in this having happened. The article mislabels Iran Contra as “Irangate”, which it might have been called at the time (I don’t remember, as I was only 9 at the time):

The IRIAF’s self-sufficiency office claimed for years that the program to add bombs to F-14s was a fully domestic project. Now we know that’s not true. During a recent air show at 8th Air Base in Isfahan, the air force displayed an F-14 with a dozen free-fall bombs hanging in its central canal.

The bomb racks were not Iranian, but American BRU-34s and BRU-42s bearing U.S. Air Force markings.

The U.S. Air Force first used such bomb racks during mid-’80s, around the same time Iran started its Tomcat-bomber project. Because there were so few of the racks in existence, it’s highly improbable that the Iranians got them through the black market and without the knowledge of the U.S. Air Force.

At the time, Washington was trying to repair its relations with Iran through secretive arms deliveries. In an affair later dubbed “Irangate,” the U.S. delivered stockpiles of artillery shells and anti-tank weapons to Iran.

The latest information suggests that during the Irangate affair, Washington also delivered to Tehran the equipment necessary to convert F-14s to bombers. This development implies direct military contact between Iran and the U.S., through which American officials understood the immediate strategic needs of the Iranian air force.

Thanks, Ollie!

“… in celebration of its upcoming 25th anniversary in April, Hubble has revisited the famous [Pillars of Creation], providing astronomers with a sharper and wider view. As a bonus, the pillars have been photographed in near-infrared light, as well as visible light. The infrared view transforms the pillars into eerie, wispy silhouettes seen against a background of myriad stars. That’s because the infrared light penetrates much of the gas and dust, except for the densest regions of the pillars. Newborn stars can be seen hidden away inside the pillars. The new images are being unveiled at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Seattle.”

US oil production peaked about 1970-71. Assuming a cumulative gaussian distribution with a sigma of 25 years for modeling production over time, we are now at about the 95th or 96th percentile. Assuming sigma=30y, we are at about the 92nd or 93rd percentile.

I learn so much here—never heard about John Titor before. Reading about him made me think of Quantum Leap. And now I’m thinking about Scott Bakula…and about how sad I was when I thought Dean Stockwell was a wingnut. But I think I was wrong and he was just playing a role in some wingnut movie, and I never knew he gave Neil Young the idea to name “Ater the Goldrush” and what were we talking about again?

Trying to convince these jackasses the photo is real is a waste of time. The cat lady gave them the answer they want, and they’re sticking to it.

I once tried to explain to someone why the flag Amstrong and Aldrin planted on the Moon was “flying” — it was hanging from a metal rod. They however insisted the wind was making it fly, but since there is no air on the Moon, the photo had to be fake.

Bam! Gotcha!

Yes, that evil Harry Truman who desegregated the armed forces and recognized Israel and:

A 1947 report by the Truman administration titled To Secure These Rights presented a detailed ten-point agenda of civil rights reforms. In February 1948, the president submitted a civil rights agenda to Congress that proposed creating several federal offices devoted to issues such as voting rights and fair employment practices.[167] This provoked a storm of criticism from Southern Democrats in the runup to the national nominating convention, but Truman refused to compromise, saying: “My forebears were Confederates … but my very stomach turned over when I had learned that Negro soldiers, just back from overseas, were being dumped out of Army trucks in Mississippi and beaten.”[168] Tales of the abuse, violence, and persecution suffered by many African American veterans upon their return from World War II infuriated Truman, and were a major factor in his decision to issue Executive Order 9981, in July 1948, desegregating and requiring equal opportunity in the Armed Forces.[169] After several years of planning, recommendations and revisions between Truman, the Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity and the various branches of the military, Army units became racially integrated.[170]

Another executive order, also in 1948, made it illegal to discriminate against persons applying for civil service positions based on race. A third, in 1951, established the Committee on Government Contract Compliance (CGCC). This committee ensured that defense contractors did not discriminate because of race.[171][172]

Yes, I think Columbus stole your snow.

I just got back in from cleaning off my walkways around the house and out front. Probably a good 4” of powdery snow.

What is really strange, the storm seems to have been greatest in a band just above the Ohio river and just south of Columbus. And it is still going on. Very unusual. And northern Ohio where it is usually the snowiest got very little.

More like a yellow card. Twitter engages in revolving door suspensions that sometimes last not more than a few hours. That Kincannon hasn’t been restored yet suggests that either he hasn’t bothered to try and fight to get it restored, or Twitter hasn’t bothered to free his account.

I’d be curious as to the real reason they’ve banned him (if that’s indeed the case) - and why his case is different than those of people like Chuckles (who should be banned for his smears, lies, doxxing, and other TOS violations).

Just read the TPM round up of the brain battle between Bill O and DuKKKe.

Bill O’Reilly apparently stopped himself from saying “white supremacist” and changed it to “that your organization isn’t looking out for the white, European race”.

Bill also managed to Magic Balance Fairy the whole issue with the standard “Well, there’s minorities who are racist, too!” meme.

Fuck him and fuck Fox News. It’s naïve of me to think this, but Fox could have actually done something good for their viewers and the country by calling out Duke for what he is: an ignorant racist.

Tell me again how they don’t have a tightly scripted agenda that passes as news.

I’m a little on edge today about this stuff because I’m about ready to cut my cousin loose on FB. He’s pulling that “I’m not racist, but look what at THOSE PEOPLE do!!!” horseshit again.

My cousin has been dropping the N bomb since he was a toddler. Guy’s repeating the bigoted cycle of his father and grandfather, and he’s most likely going to repeat it with his infant son. I really have no interest in watching this.

The corker is that he lived in Key West for several years, and went on a kick of posting gay friendly stuff on his feed for a while. It looks like none of that tolerance applies to skin color.

He doesn’t understand much of what he is talking about anyway, and if he does, he can’t express himself properly, not being a journalist or a bright human being, but what he means is probably what I have indicated above (even if he actually believes in literal differently sized pixels). Namely, that it’s a paste job from digital pics of different resolutions, where one pic is zoomed relative to another, thus the “squares” (which are no longer pixels of course) being different.

The NYPD hissy fit continues for a second week:

They continue to use all the means at their disposal to force the city to give them more in contract talks, despite the fact that the city is safer than it’s ever been.

Yet, officers can and still do get shot at on the job. Two undercover cops were shot overnight. Both are expected to make full recoveries. Part of the incident was caught on video, and the suspect remains at large. A gun was recovered (how much do we want to wager that it was obtained from somewhere along the Iron Pipeline (PA, VA, NC, SC, GA) where most of the guns used in crimes in NYC originate? That, of course, will be overshadowed by the PBA using the incident to once again make the bogus claim that the mayor doesn’t care about cops or that the mayor brought the shootings about by being insensitive to the cops’ feelings (by stating the inarguable fact that minorities are racially profiled and that cops act differently towards minorities than they do towards other groups).

There were even blunt spokesmen who went so far as to suggest that the United States had made a bad bargain in annexing New Mexico. Some years after the Civil War, General William T. Is this another of the many things that I just don’t “get” about the world today? I would think that asserting that a newspaper committed fraud and that by extension a woman has launched a frivolous lawsuit would require more substantiation than the words of someone going by a Twitter nym.

This reminds of “Professor” Irwin Corey, a stand-up comedian who bills himself as “The World’s Foremost Authority.”

I’m currently reading _A World On Fire; a book about Britain’s effect in various areas on the US Civil War.

Just into the early chapters covering the pre-war period, but you can see a political parallel to the current politics. Politicians playing the extremes simply to get support while other are “true believers”. Rhetoric leaning towards name-calling and invective rather than trying to work out political solutions, etc. etc.

Just a reminder that US (and arguably world) politics remains roughly the same game that it always has been. Just additional media to take advantage of, better understanding of how advertising and manipulation work, and a slightly different team of players.

Another day, another hack is hacked off by hacking:

(From Politico so , no link)

Former CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson has sued the U.S. Department of Justice for illegal surveillance, alleging that the Obama administration hacked her computers while she was reporting on the Benghazi attacks, Fast and Furious and Obamacare.

“There is an administrative claim for illegal wiretapping and a lawsuit alleging constitutional violations,” Attkisson told POLITICO on Monday, confirming a Fox News report about the lawsuit. She is seeking $35 million in damages.

Despite inconsistencies in Ms. Attkisson’s story and the fact that the alleged government hacking could easily have been technical glitches, including a stuck backspace key on her computer keyboard, she’s brought suit. Popcorn, anyone?

I own like 1 Bitcoin total. There’s no way I’d sock away more than a couple hundred bucks in bitcoins, given the massive failures among the Bitcin exchanges. I feel sorry in some ways for those poor fools who dropped thousands of dollars on trading Bitcoins and left those funds in the hands of the exchanges like Bitstamp. They’re not banks, or stock brokers, with insurance and tons of safeguards developed over decades.

But, I have to say, using the Bitcoin system to transfer money from China to the States saves me money — if I time it when Bitcoin values aren’t dropping like rocks.

208 Rightwingconspirator  Jan 6, 2015 8:08:35am

Ah politics and optics…

It’s disappointing to see that Jeb Bush has the same opinion of marriage equality as the presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton,” Angelo told The Huffington Post. “Jeb had a chance to differentiate himself from her, and at the very least say that, in Florida, marriage equality is settled law and there are more pressing issues demanding attention. As it stands, Jeb tacks the same line as Hillary: that marriage is something that should be left to the states.”

During an interview in June with NPR’s Terry Gross, Clinton repeatedly said that for her, marriage had always been “a matter left to the states” but never clarified whether she believes same-sex marriage bans violate the U.S. Constitution.

But unlike Clinton, Bush has not come out in favor of marriage equality. Clinton announced her evolution in March 2013.

In 2012, Bush offered some support for individuals in same-sex relationships, but he ultimately backed “traditional marriage.”

Oklahoma had a fivefold surge in earthquakes last year, making it by far the most seismically active state in the Lower 48.

The Sooner State was shaken by 564 quakes of magnitude 3 and larger, compared with only 100 in 2013, according to an EnergyWire analysis of federal earthquake data. California, which is twice the size of Oklahoma, had fewer than half as many quakes.

re: #172 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD

You’re both right. He thinks that a composited image retains the differing pixel sizes of its original constituent components. So that the pixels from Roberts’ eye are larger than the pixels in Prince Andrew’s eye. He thinks that because that’s what his expert @FlippingOffCat has told him -> that if you zoom way in using her special scientific software suite, this is what she sees, two different sized pixels at the exact same level of magnification.

Except as we all know raster images don’t work that way, because motherfucking math that’s why. All pixels are addressed according to X by Y coordinates, and within any given raster image they are always the exact same size. If they ever aren’t the exact same size they’re no longer pixels in a raster image, but texels, or some kind of Voronoi / Vector based abstract shit, or the dots in an AM halftone print rip file, or anything other than the elements in a jpeg that you can zoom in on and view using your goddamned computer monitor.

Not likely. I give him about a 10% chance. And that’s probably too much.

As for the damage he could do, what exactly can he do?

Push the House to open impeachment? The TP has been begging to do that for years.

Push to defund Obamacare? They’ve been attempting that for years, and President would eventually veto anything coming across his desk.

Attack science and education? They’ve been on that road for years, and it would be all the more public as to what the GOP agenda is all about.

It would be ugly, but there’d be more sound and fury, and less results. The GOP has to actually attempt to govern, and it simply isn’t in their DNA to do that now, or at any time in the past decade. They want to defund, delay, and destroy the federal government by any means necessary. That’s not governance. It’s a recipe for disaster for the GOP (and the nation if anything manages to survive a Presidential veto - which until now have been few and far between).

The current GOP approach (which is in fact very similar, I think, to other RW parties around the world) is to make a bunch of noise about stuff which doesn’t actually happen, and meanwhile to fractionally divert money from poor people to rich people.

If you shift 0.1% of Federal spending from food stamps to some bland-sounding contracted program, you’ve suddenly taken a massive amount of money from a lot of poor people and given it to one very rich person.

And hurt his chances of even holding NJ, which is split between being Giants and Philly fans.

But that’s not what bothers me about his presence in the Jones’ box at the Cowboys stadium. It’s that he wrote an executive order that essentially exempts him from gifting rules applicable to other state officials, and that the Port Authority, which answers to both Christie and Gov. Cuomo, is in a long term deal with Legends Hospitality (which is coowned by the Yankees, Cowboys, and several other players) to operate the 1WTC observation deck and food services. There’s conflicts of interest there, and the ethics of his presence, is well, questionable.

Add to that the fact that Christie allowed the NFL to fleece the state for the Super Bowl, and you’ve got a toxic mess there in that photo.

Daniel Webster (R-FL) elected Speaker in stunning upset. Webster supporters attribute the lopsided victory to the fact that Webster beat the devil in court.

Seriously. I said this last night. I mean, I get Christie’s football team preference is trivial in the long run, but he knows how much the Cowboys are despised in this state. Both he and his brother are openly telling the NJ electorate to go fuck themselves if they don’t like it.

Can you image if this guy were President, how he would handle diplomatic matters of global import? Christ, we’d be in World Wars 3 through 7.5 by the end of his first term.

And hey, would it be too much to ask TO STOP THE NONSTOP TRAVELLING AND SPEND ONE SOLID WEEK IN NJ AND DO YOUR GODDAMNED JOB???

Urgh…

Does Christie even understand the word negotiate? Seems he substitutes for it with the word threaten.

It helps to know about their relationship. They loved needling each other. If you don’t know about those two guys, you think Roger Ebert is the biggest a-hole in the world :D

That was a great documentary. I used to love watching those two argue over the movies. My favorite revelation in the documentary is how Siskel was afraid Ebert was going to leave the show, and how happy he was when Ebert got married, because that meant he would have to settle down and buy a house and new stuff for his wife and would therefore never leave the show.

There are no requirements to be Speaker, other than apparently being a live body. So Rand gets a vote even though he’s a Senator, and is looking to run for the White House.

The minority party could potentially win the Speaker if the majority party is sufficiently fractured, but it’s never happened before, and wont happen here either. If it does, that goes directly at Steve Scalise’s abilities, since he’s the majority whip - the job description involves rounding up the votes and getting the counts on key issues.

Considering we don’t know how many, this is a cautious step in the right direction. The GOP had been complaining since Obama normalized relations (which essentially means setting up diplomatic posts rather than working through 3d parties) that Obama got nothing in return for shipping off a couple of spies for a handful of US ppl held in Cuba. They apparently forgot the fine print about how the Cubans would release a bunch of political prisoners.

Again, a baby step, but a good one in the right direction.

SO, I read this tweet and in verifying it, started to remember Victor Borge.

from the wiki:

<blockquote>Among Borge’s other famous routines is the “Phonetic Punctuation” routine, in which he recites a story, with full punctuation (comma, period, exclamation mark, etc.) as exaggerated onomatopoeic sounds.[16] Another is his “Inflationary Language”, where he incremented numbers embedded in words, whether they are visible or not (“once upon a time” becomes “twice upon a time”, “wonderful” becomes “twoderful”, “forehead” becomes “fivehead”, “tennis” becomes “elevennis”, “I ate a tenderloin with my fork and so on and so forth” becomes “‘I nine an elevenderloin with my five’k’ and so on and so fifth”).[13]

The quote, BTW, is from his autobiography which doesn’t seem to be on Amazon.

First up isn’t a prediction as much as a major milestone that’s reflective of escalating healthcare costs. According to CMS (here) our National Healthcare Expenditure (NHE) is projected to hit $3.207 trillion this year. The U.S. Population is currently hovering at around 320 million, so 2015 looks to be the first year healthcare spending will reach $10,000 per person. We may be “bending the cost growth curve,” but the per capita amount continues to grow.
