Breaking! Chuck C. Johnson Conclusively Proves He’s Totally Clueless About Digital Imagery

Huge fail from the Ginger Avenger
Wingnuts • Views: 36,205

This one will go down in the annals of Chuck C. Johnson’s very worst failures, an utterly ludicrous and flat out stupid post titled: BREAKING: We Can Conclusively Prove That #PrinceAndrew Underaged Prostitute Photo Is Fake - GotNews.

Chuck has gotten it in his thick head that a picture of Prince Andrew with “underaged prostitute Virginia Roberts” is a fake, and he’s calling on a real expert to help him prove it: @FlippingOffCat, a random Twitter account with one follower, whose timeline consists mostly of pictures of people … flipping off cats. Yes, really. That’s who Chuck is referring to as “our analyst.”

Gotnews can conclusively prove that the photo of Prince Andrew with Virginia Roberts, the alleged underaged prostitute is a forgery.

The photo [below] is said to date from 2001 when Roberts was underaged and in London was provided to the Daily Mail by Roberts in 2011.

We consulted with experts in photography and analyses performed using the computer program, Image-Pro Plus by MediaCybernetics.

The key to investigation is the size of the pixels. You would expect a photograph to have the same pixelation throughout. And yet the sections with Andrew and Virginia have different sized pixels that become clear when you zoom in.

Our analyst writes:

Virginia’s and Andrew’s facial photos were taken using different cameras, different shutters speeds; therefore; at different times. Pixels in the photo of the brunette and Andrew are a better match, yet not exact.

It is 99.8% likely that the photo of Andrew and the brunette [Jeffrey Epstein assistant Ghislaine Maxwell] were taken by the same camera, with the same shutter speed, at the same time.

However, the photo shadows, color gradients, and pixel sizes of Virginia Roberts indicate with 99.9% certainty that her photo could not have been taken with the same camera, shutter speed, or at the same time as the photos of Andrew and the brunette [Maxwell]. Higher resolution settings were used to photograph Andrew and the brunette [Maxwell], and neither match the lower quality resolution settings of Virginia’s photo.

DIFFERENT SIZED PIXELS, folks. If you know anything at all about how digital images are composed, you’re laughing already. By definition, pixels in a digital image are all the same size. That’s how they work. There’s simply no such thing as a JPEG with “different sized pixels.”

Chuck isn’t just wrong here, he’s off in outer space. Did he get taken in by a deliberate fraudster? Could be, because if we examine the “proof” provided to him by @FlippingOffCat, we see what looks very much like a deliberate attempt to deceive. Here’s the comparison showing “different sized pixels:”

(By the way, the image shows the subjects’ right eyes, not the left.)

I knew this was bullshit as soon as I saw it; so I loaded the photo into Photoshop to do my own comparison, and it quickly became obvious what @FlippedOffCats did - he or she grabbed two different sized selections. The one on the right was a smaller selection, so when zoomed in the pixels appear larger.

This can’t have been an accident — you have to try to do something like this. It’s much easier to simply use the same selection area over. Here’s what these two areas look like with a selection of 50 x 54 pixels, zoomed in 1000%.

The pixels are exactly the same size, because they have to be. That’s how pixels work.

It’s hard to overstate how massive the fail is in Chuck’s post. He looks like a complete ignoramus here.

I hate to even give his ridiculous theory the credit of arguing about it, because he’s literally the only person in the world who thinks this photo is fake (well, and any wingnuts he managed to convince with his post), but there’s no way to prove conclusively either way. The photo is from 2001, was obviously taken with a film camera (not digital), and has probably been scanned, copied, resampled, tweaked, cropped, color-adjusted, and who knows what else many times in those 14 years. The image is so degraded it’s pointless to try to prove anything from it by zooming in and “analyzing” the pixels.

The only real question is whether Chuck C. Johnson fell for a scam, or whether he’s pushing yet another lie knowingly, on purpose.

I think the biggest thing I’ve missed in this tempest-in-a-teapot is why? Why do Chuckles and his pals care if this pic is fake or not? Is it the pro-sexual assault slant under the guise of false rape allegations or am I missing something?

1. Dershowitz is his mentor, so it’s personal.
2. But I do think he also tries to buttress the “false rape accusations” narrative.

(This particular accusation may be false, I guess we’ll have to wait and see. But it’s not the love of the truth that moves Chuck in this case (or any…)).

72. Edwards provided notice that he intended to depose Alan Dershowitz. Edwards
possessed a legitimate basis for doing so: (a) Dershowitz is believed to have been friends with Epstein
for many years; (b) in one news article Dershowitz comments that, “I’m on my 20th book… The only
person outside of my immediate family that I send drafts to is Jeffrey” The Talented Mr. Epstein, By
Vicky Ward on January, 2005 in Published Work, Vanity Fair (See article attached as Exhibit “00”);
(c) Epstein’s housekeeper Alfredo Rodriguez testified that Dershowitz stayed at Epstein’s house during
the years when Epstein was assaulting minor females on a daily basis; (d) Rodriguez testified that
Dershowitz was at Epstein’s house at times when underage females where there being molested by
Epstein (see Alfredo Rodriguez deposition at 278-280, 385, 426-427); (e) Dershowitz reportedly
assisted in attempting to persuade the Palm Beach State Attorney’s Office that because the underage
females alleged to have been victims of Epstein’s abuse lacked credibility and could not be believed
that they were at Epstein’s house, when Dershowitz himself was an eyewitness to their presence at the
house; (f) Jane Doe No. 102 stated generally that Epstein forced her to be sexually exploited by not
only Epstein but also Epstein’s “adult male peers, including royalty, politicians, academicians,
businessmen, and/or other professional and personal acquaintances” — categories that Dershowitz and
acquaintances of Dershowitz fall into; (g) during the years 2002-2005 Alan Dershowitz was on
Epstein’s plane on several occasions according to the flight logs produced by Epstein’s pilot and
information (described above) suggested that sexual assaults may have taken place on the plane; (h)
Epstein donated $30 Million one year to the university at which Dershowitz teaches. Based on this
information, Edwards had a reasonable basis to believe that Dershowitz might have relevant
information to provide in the cases against Jeffrey Epstein and accordingly provided notice of a
possible deposition. See Dershowitz letters to the State Attorney’s office attached as Exhibit “PP”;
Deposition of Alfredo Rodriguez at 278-280; Flight Logs Exhibit “MM”; Exhibits “B” and “00”; and
Edwards Affidavit, Exhibit “N” at ¶14.

That dude tries way too hard. He doesn’t need to do any of that shit, it just distracts from a very obvious thing, raster image files just don’t work the way CCJ and his expert are positing.

Most people understand this shit rather intuitively, because y’know, fucking math. The dudes who created the various raster image file formats and display hardware used pixels arranged in rows and columns because that made the programing less of a pain in the ass. If you need to manipulate an image, for example by rotating it n-degrees, having all your crap arranged orthogonally just makes shit super easy. That’s why we don’t make displays or image capture sensors with hexagonal elements, because offsetting every other row or column a half value would be comparatively a goddamned nightmare. Pixels are arranged the way they are because it just works.

Also, as far as the files go the idea of “pixel size” is totally arbitrary. Pixel stands for picture element, unless you’re talking about the physical site on the camera sensor, or the dot pitch on the display, pixel size isn’t a real or concrete attribute of the file. Essentially it’s display metadata. It’s set according to how you want the image to display on screen, you set a width and height and the “pixel size” you see just ends up being W/# of “x” pixels by H/# of Y pixels.

Pixels come in different sizes?

Yes, usually, but also no, not really … sometimes. Fuck.

Within any given photographic file they’re all the exact same, same ratio, same “size” that’s the important thing here.

If you’re digitizing source material from an old school video format, especially mixing shit like NTSC and PAL you’ll go through a step that converts the pixel aspect ratio from square to anamorphic (rectangular). Yes, usually, but also no, not really … sometimes. Fuck.

Within any given photographic file they’re all the exact same, same ratio, same “size” that’s the important thing here.

If you’re digitizing source material from an old school video format, especially mixing shit like NTSC and PAL you’ll go through a step that converts the pixel aspect ratio of pixels from square to anamorphic (rectangular). In a nutshell this is because the vertical resolution on these formats was firm (scan lines), but the horizontal resolution was hinky. Otherwise all pixels are square.

A better way to put this is: when you are talking about digital files, there is only one size pixel. And it is just the quantization of the picture, it has no inherent physical size.

The only time pixels can have a defined size and shape is in the context of a physical display device. But upchuckles ain’t talking display devices. He’s just talking about the purely virtual file format pixel.

Oldest US Time Capsule Will Be Opened Today

The oldest time capsule discovered in the country that dates back to 1795 will be opened today in Boston.

American Revolution patriot Paul Revere and then-Gov. Samuel Adams originally placed the relic under a cornerstone of the Boston Statehouse in 1795.

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, scheduled a news conference at 6 p.m. ET today, authorizing only credentialed media because of “extremely limited space and object sensitivity,” the museum said in a statement.

I know, I know, any time someone uses the word “quantization” every is all “What the BLEEP do we know!?!” ;-)

It’s not that deep. It’s mostly a handy solution to the problem of “how do I take a picture, save it as data and move it to another computer?” It ends up being really convenient to abstract away physical size issues and leave that for the designers of individual computers. (Which is what you want to do because different computers can display different amounts of color and have different sizes and types of monitors, and we haven’t even started talking about printers and paper sizes.)

So, all of the raster (ie: pixel based) image formats do this. All of them. There is no raster image format where the pixel size can change with any amount of popular following. Even the obscure formats that have been cast aside do not do this.

I’d go so far as to say the second you start having different “size” quantizations simutaneously you’re by definition no longer in the realm of a raster image. You’re working with an Amplitude Modulation halftone printer rip, or a 2D/3D texel or a vector file or a Voronoi tessellation. At that point it’s anything but raster / bitmap / jpeg / png / tiff.

I just… different sized pixels?

I’ve been sitting here trying to figure out the logic of it (in their minds, not mine). So the higher the resolution, the smaller the pixels so you can pack more into the same amount of space?

My monitor lets me choose between various resolution sizes. Does that mean it has the ability to magically shrink & enlarge the pixels on my screen? How does it do that?? Does it squeeze/stretch all the little liquid crystal molecules and the pixels they reside in? What happens when they get all huge & puffed up and start running out of room?

One more thing: Where does the monitor store the excess pixels? It must store them somewhere because I could change my screen resolution at any minute and then all those pixels that got pushed out would need to be sucked back in and resized according to the resolution I choose. Oh, snap! maybe it’s the video card that stores & manages them…

This is making my brain hurt.

Be sure to have more than enough resolution in that scan of the signature.

More pixels…means a better trace object in whatever trace program you use to create vectors out of bitmaps.

Lower resolution means bigger pixels to the trace program…and makes for more vector nodes and a ‘bumpy’ looking vector file.

He stole the show in Out of Africa, with a basically small part, and his performance in this brilliant series demonstrates that it was no fluke. As many reviewers have noted it is highly addictive.
Netflix also has the righteous 1953 Californian version of War of the Worlds for streaming now, along with Tom Hanks in Cast Away. I highly recommend both.
I also note that the overtly racist 1915 classic Birth of a Nation is first on Netflix’s “trending” list just now.

re: #165 CuriousLurker

#TheStupidItBurns

re: #172 FemNaziBitch

yes, but doesn’t a point have more than one dimension?

technically?

No. Points by geometric definition are dimensionless. Physical pixels are generally square however for two reasons. 1.) Squares pack without wasting space. 2.) Squares pack in straight lines arranged 90 degrees to one another with no deviation (rows and columns.)

Display pixels could be round, or triangular or any other shape and still pack the same way, but there’d be lots of awkward dead space between them. And then you need to ask yourself if that deadspace should be uniform white, black or grey, and then you’re fucking with the overall luminance and/or spatial fidelity of whatever information is in the file. We’re used to square pixels because they just work, they pack in a way that is both efficient and easy to deal with.

File pixels are different, they’re virtual instead of physical. They represent as 3effJeff put it, the quantization of the image, the smallest whole informational bit of a picture. They aren’t physically real until we decide to plot them within a two dimensional plane, at which time the convention is to make them square so as to avoid all the aforementioned useless dead space.

Informationally file pixels can be broken down into individual sub values, luminance and chrominance, but the pixel is the smallest whole. An analogy here would be nucleons and quarks, nucleons are like pixels, quarks are like the color values that make them up. This analogy works deeper than it appears since the strong force that binds nucleons together is described in terms of color charges that have nothing to do with actual color. It’s just a weird metaphor that coincidentally works surreally well.

I’ve said too much, I’m rambling. Sorry.

Anyway, if your file has more pixels than your display, you can either view it “pixel for pixel,” in which case the entire image will not fit on the screen at once. Or you can have the display show the whole image, but some or all of the file pixel information will be displayed via averaged values on the display pixels. Your modern software can also make a file with fewer pixels than your display fill it up, by multiplying pixels and averaging any leftovers / overlapping fractions as necessary.

I’m working on an algorithm to strip out all the “0” bits, and only leave the “1” bits. You can pack the 1’s a lot closer together. Then you just reinsert the missing “0”s when you read the file. Interestingly, the Older Boy, whose grammar is usually excellent, keeps saying ‘Mary and me did thus-and-so’, which is somewhat surprising. I suspect that ‘Mary And Me’ is a proper noun in his mind rather than a proper noun and a pronoun tied with a conjunction

the french consider their ‘double negative’ perfectly grammatical. there is an idea that grammar should conform to some idea of logic and consistency, but linguists don’t subscribe to that view. you can use the second form if you want to, but you run the risk of sounding stilted

Relax. Languages evolve. Ever wonder why the singular “you” is combined with “are” rather than “is”? You used to be plural. The plural verb stuck to it when it morphed to being singular, though in the 19th century there was some confusion even amongst the educated which is why you will see “Is you going?” in writings of that time.

After all the bad press cops have gotten recently, officers from Utah’s Salt Lake Unified Police Department (SLUPD) flying home from New York Police Detective Wenjian Liu funeral step up and save a suicidal woman:

Police stop apparent suicide attempt on JetBlue flight

A JetBlue flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Salt Lake City was diverted to Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Sunday after a passenger apparently became suicidal and combative after a fight with her husband, CNN affiliate KSL reported.

Before the incident, Flight 71’s flight attendants had noted the unusually high number of police officers on the flight.

Flight attendants separated the fighting couple and brought the wife to the front of the cabin to sit next to Salt Lake Unified Police Department Det. Robert Odor. The detective had an open seat next to him and agreed to sit with her.

When Odor noticed her taking pills and writing a note, he grabbed the pill bottle out of her hand, he told KSL.

“She was yelling, she was kicking at us,” Odor said.

As officers held her down, Salt Lake Unified Police Sgt. Terry Wall tried to calm the woman. A crisis-intervention specialist who is often asked to negotiate with distraught people, Wall said he “tried to let her know that we’re there to help her, let her know that she matters, even though she’s saying that ‘I don’t want you to help me, I want to die.’”

The value of appropriately trained officers when dealing with mentally ill or suicidal people cannot be overemphasized.

A friend of mine who grew up on a farm was telling us about castrating cattle. He said that the cow would immediately vacate it’s bowels and bladder from the surprise and the pain, and if you didn’t get your head out of the way, you’d get a face full. I hope that Ernst doesn’t know about that.

Castrating a cow. Hmm, something about that sounds wrong somehow.

And since we’re airing grammatical grievances, I am compelled to add that it should be its bowels, not it’s bowels.

I’ve been skeptical to be honest about a connection between fracking and earthquakes, but the evidence does seem to be mounting up.

Fracking may have something to do with these small quakes, but it’s likely that injection wells (where all the waste water from fracking is disposed) is the more likely culprit.

Fracking uses 2-3 million gallons of water to break the shale and inject sand and surfactants into the cracks to keep them open. The vast majority of the fracking fluid is recovered at the surface and treated or disposed before production begins. Most is disposed in injection wells, which take hundreds of millions of gallons of wastewater. And it’s nasty stuff.

Reason enough to move.

Oh yes.

Scientists Say Oil Industry Likely Caused Largest Oklahoma Earthquake

The largest recorded earthquake in Oklahoma history was likely triggered by the injection of wastewater from oil production into wells deep beneath the earth, according to a study published Tuesday in the scientific journal Geology.

The magnitude 5.7 earthquake, which struck in 2011 near Prague in central Oklahoma, is the largest and most recent of a number of quakes scientists have tied to wastewater injection from oil and natural gas production, raising new concerns about the practice.

This all went down last night before Chuck seized on her “expertise” and ran with it. Ladd’s politics seem really conservative for my tastes, but he should be credited for being totally honest about the image from the get go. Like me he doesn’t say it’s obviously legit, just that there’s nothing to indicate it was shopped.

Chuck also reached out to Dr. Neil Krawetz the day before. This was his response.

So you can see that the dude was definitely shopping around until he could get someone who was willing to give him the opinion he wanted. And of course, predictably, that person refuses to step forward and defend their “analysis.”

That is exactly what is going on. Injecting fluids is releasing stresses already present, not creating new stress. It has actually been suggested as a way to avoid stresses becoming too large resulting in the big one.

The New Madrid is a deep, deep crustal margin fault. We’re talking hundreds of kilometers. Neither fracking nor waste water injection is going to stir up that particular monster. It just ruptures when it feels like it and no one knows why because they cut loose so rarely. No real data. Boston had a 6 in colonial times. Charleston had a 7 (!) in the 1880’s. And Lisbon was destroyed by a quake in 1755.Those aren’t traditional quake zones. Deep crustal faults are just random killers when they pop.

We’ve got a 5,778 K temperature on the surface of the sun and the sun is constantly producing nuclear fusion. Every house could harness that solar energy if we could give up our stylistic notions of what a house really is, and that is, shelter and warmth. Not really. The back end hazardous waste is about as bad. When you knock apart the nucleus of a 230+ amu atom, you get a lot of stuff that’s way off the island of stability. (And this is a necessary side-effect: without high grade waste in the fuel generating secondary neutrons seconds to minutes in the future, we couldn’t control a fission reactor.)

Uranium and plutonium reactors can be designed to be just as melt-down safe as Thorium reactor. The reason we don’t have those is because we stopped building nuclear reactors in the 70s (or 80s; working off the top of my head).

Thorium doesn’t have any fissionable isotopes, so it has to breed to U-233 first, and then it can be used as fuel. U-233 is as usable in bombs as Pu-239, so it is a similar proliferation threat as all the other breeder reactor/fuel reprocessing cycles.

Its main advantage is, quite literally, Thorium is way more abundant on the earth than Uranium.

(Don’t get me wrong: we should be pursuing them. But I also think we should be pursuing modern Uranium and Plutonium cycles, too.)
