Yeah, I’m liking it and it’s faithful to the character from the movies. It’s hitting the right notes of being faithful to the Marvel cinematic universe (for continuity purposes) and fun in its own right if you know nothing about any of that).

Back at Tulane, on Sunday nights in the mid-70’s there was the Dollar Night Concert series which presented mostly unknown promising artists. I saw Leo Kottke, Steve Martin, a double-bill of the Ramones and The Runaways (!), and one fabulous night, an unknown named Phoebe Cates with a guy named Jackson Browne who had just released his first album.

He opened with a RMotW, just him and a piano. It was breathtaking. Song for Adam, Ready or Not, Take It Easy, and so on. That kid was one hell of a songwriter.

I’m helping out at the “Discover Scuba” booth at the Nashville Boat Show starting Thursday. Talk to people about diving, help out as they get to try out some gear in a 4 foot deep pool. At least it gets me out of the house and away from my stove.

Roast chicken that I rubbed with whatever I grabbed out of the spice cab. and some olive oil, mashed taters and green beans here. Tomorrow I’m going to do up a batch of red beans, got some pork neck bones (couldn’t find a smoked ham hock). One of the many things I learned from my Cajun Ex. Females wanted independence and the right to vote. It took them a few years but in 2008 they cast their vote for swagger without any regard to substance, ideology or qualifications. History will show this was a fatal mistake for America. In short, THEY KILLED AMERICA.
Being a pedophile didn’t stop females from adoring Michael Jackson. This was a precursor of things to come at the ballot box in 2008; same hero worship complete with Greek columns.

“To my knowledge, it’s never existed,” Lassalle said of the neighborhood group Knight claimed to head.

Multiple people familiar with Jefferson Parish’s myriad civic associations, including past presidents of the Civic League of East Jefferson, also have said over the past week that they had never heard of such a group. And the organization does not appear on the parish’s list of neighborhood groups, an informal but lengthy resource on the parish’s website.”

The premise is bullshit. (For an entertaining rant: mention the paleo diet in front of a group of Archaeology and Anthropology PhDs. Points awarded for how long you can manage to play Devil’s Advocate. 1 second = 1 point.)

OTOH, it ends up being a great weight lifting diet. I wander on and off a loose version of it depending on how hard I’m working out at the time. Being hardcore about it is socially obnoxious and you don’t need to be 100% strict to get the benefit.

Explosion outside NAACP in Colorado deliberate, FBI says

An explosion outside an NAACP office building in Colorado on Tuesday morning that rattled neighbors was caused deliberately, officials say.

An improvised explosive device was detonated against the exterior wall of the NAACP building on South El Paso Street in Colorado Springs around 10:45 a.m. Mountain time. No one was injured, said Amy Sanders, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Denver.

A gasoline can had been placed near the device but did not ignite during the explosion, Sanders said.

The sidewalk and the local NAACP headquarters building, which also houses a barbershop, suffered minor damage, she said…

Lots of changes to the source material. For one thing, Michael Douglas is Hank Pam, the original Ant Man, is OLD. For another, there’s not Janet Van Dyne, the Wasp.

But there’s Evangeline Lilly as Hank and Janet’s daughter (and she looks appropriate bad ass). So the comic nerds are split…and not necessarily over the quality of the movie…..

Given what we do and do not know about human nutrition, I go with what makes me feel best, and do lots of personal experimentation. The proselytizers and scolds are cultists or snake oil salesmen. I know people who have been vegetarians with no issues long term. I tried it for a year and learned that my body doesn’t recover properly without animal protein and fat. I tend to be deliberately offensive around militant vegans for this reason. ;-)

You know what else is magic? Bay leaves. Two or three of those things in a big pot of stuff totally changes the taste. I don’t get that.

but the real magic is in a tube of anchovy paste. I put a little bit in whenever I want to punch up the flavors, especially with anything with a tomato based sauce. I usually squeeze an inch or two in when I’m sweating down the veggies. Learned that one from my Dad, and the stuff is both cheap and lasts forever in the fridge.

That’s a bold statement, ProLifeLiberal. My sister has called C. Springs home for 20 years, I’d say her and her husband have been on the cutting edge of human development in that area of the world. C. Springs may have their awful Christian religious zealots, but it’s balanced by great Colorado people.

Well, I’m going to hang it up. Got a few errands to do in the morning before it turns bitter cold. The Holly carb I sold on ebay (for an old project that ended up going a different direction) just paid for a dive trip up to Bonne Terre Mine. (Diving in an old mine, 100 foot+ visibility, should be a lot of fun). It’s one of those places that are on most lists of “Places you have to dive” (just like skiers, hikers and bird watchers, we have lists too). It’s only 4 hours away from where I live, the biggest problem is that the people who own it know they have a unique attraction, and have priced it accordingly.

Tomorrow, Red beans and rice. (With some pork necks for a little meat flavor). Going to try doing them in the crockpot. (saute the trinity and brown off the necks in a pan first).

Take care, and remember, it’s always after 5 somewhere, and it’s always somebody’s birthday.

He is currently not working and she only makes about 13,000 a year. I am not sure of their circumstances before but they had been paying about $40 a month. What I am trying to determine is, does this increase have anything to do with Obamacare? Right now she and others on Facebook are blaming it all on Obamacare and it’s difficult to find any objective information. At $13k a year an Obamacare policy would be heavily subsidized to almost nothing. Obamacare raised the requirements for insurance coverage, so if her work provided the policy it would probably be a real insurance policy that meets requirements now instead of one of those policies that had massive deductibles and restrictions, and the employer passed the cost on to the employee. I can’t speak to Missouri’s implementation of the law.

re: #190 Tigger2005

I have a question. My sister and her husband have just seen their health care premium with bc/bs increase dramatically to over $1000 a month. They live in Missouri and are in mid 50’s. I would have to admit if Obamacare had anything to do with it there really are serious problems with the law. Would appreciate any input.

Smells like what tried to bite me earlier last year. You have to make 14000 a year to qualify for the tax credit - if you don’t have the credit, the ACA website will try to charge full price. They presume people have sane governors who accepted Medicare expansion. I don’t know if Missouri qualifies as sane…

They need to either apply for Medicare or increase their income by 1000 annually to qualify for the tax credit.

Actor Dustin Diamond, who spent the early ’90s playing Screech on Saved by the Bell is heading to court on charges of reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and carrying a concealed weapon after he was arrested for an alleged stabbing incident on Christmas Day. The criminal complaint against Diamond asserts that he and his fiancée got into a bar fight with three other people at the Grand Avenue Saloon near his home outside Milwaukee.

I’m waiting for Neil Young to come up with a Pono Hi-def 8-track player.

The Pono player is supposed to be out this February. You can pre-order one for $399. The Pono uses a proprietary file format which means that you will have to purchase your music again. Albums on Pono’s web site are around 18 bucks. The Walkman also uses a proprietary file format although it will also play mp3s, supposedly with their playback enhanced.

Let me get this straight. They are trying to revive the 8-track, sell a new kind of player, and convince people to buy the music they already own again. What are the advantages?

Many of those do have foreign contacts. They’d largely have to, given their firepower. The AKMs aren’t especially notable, as the cités (French housing projects, usually on the outskirts of major cities) have had substantial amounts of AKMs for years now. But RPG-7s? Those aren’t normal gang weapons. For those they’d need smuggling contacts at minimum.

Wingnuts love this fragment of a quote, but they discard the other parts:

The future must not belong to those who target Coptic Christians in Egypt — it must be claimed by those in Tahrir Square who chanted, “Muslims, Christians, we are one.” The future must not belong to those who bully women — it must be shaped by girls who go to school, and those who stand for a world where our daughters can live their dreams just like our sons.

The future must not belong to those corrupt few who steal a country’s resources — it must be won by the students and entrepreneurs, the workers and business owners who seek a broader prosperity for all people. Those are the women and men that America stands with; theirs is the vision we will support.

The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. But to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated, or churches that are destroyed, or the Holocaust that is denied.

Full speech here.

GOP lawmakers squabbling after Boehner punishes some for challenging leadership

The Ohio Republican kicked Rep. Daniel Webster (R-FL), who voted for himself for speaker, and Rep. Rich Nugent (R-FL), who voted for Webster, off the influential Rules Committee and stopped Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX) from sponsoring a bill.

This part was especially delicious.

Besides, one aide told Politico, the Republican majority is less reliant on its most staunchly conservative members to pass legislation.

“We don’t need these fringe guys as much as we did anymore,” the aide said. “We can let them walk on certain bills, and it just won’t matter. That gives us breathing room.”

Last year, our lying insurance agent blamed the insurance changes on Obamacare. Luckily, I work with very smart people and four of us called him on his bullshit telling him it was the insurance company making the increase. He was all like…uhm, uh, yeah.

This year, our premiums went up by a few bucks, but amazingly, they are actually covering stuff now. I only used them for the no-cost preventative which is mandated coverage.

Insurance agents are lying sacks of shit scum.

Ok. Every insurance agent I have done business with is a lying sack of shit scumbag. When my last company closed, the asshole insurance agent didn’t bother to mention that I could carryover my BC/BS coverage on my own, they tried to get me to go to Aetna, who rejected me for allergies. By the time I found out that I could have carried on with BC/BS, it was too late to do so, so I went for 2 years with no insurance. I lived in constant fear of getting in a car accident or getting sick. I couldn’t even get insurance if I had wanted to pay thousands of dollars a month (which I didn’t have anyway). Then this douchebag lies to a whole group of people in the insurance meeting.

I didn’t mean to offend you and for that I am sorry. I think there are a lot of good cops out there, too, but the bad ones make them all look bad.

The interactions I have had with insurance agents sullies them all in my eyes.

But it was well adapted for the screen.

Clive James, in his review of the mini-series, nailed it:

Whether or not Mr Uris identified with him, Cady was a classic example of the Hollywood writer’s fantasies about Integrity and Talent. For much of the first part of the show he was to be seen barging about spilling drinks, consumed with self-disgust at writing bad books. It is de rigeur in this fantasy for the writer to suppose that he writes bad books through choice, and that if he could only reject the swimming-pool and recover his Integrity he would be able to write good ones. It rarely occurs to him - certainly it never seemed to occur to Cady - that he writes bad books because he is a bad writer.

Several Democrat-backed bills that aim to strengthen federal law when it comes to gun ownership and domestic abuse are languishing in Congress, including one introduced in July 2013 by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) that would bar convicted stalkers and abusive dating partners from possessing guns. The gun lobby has fought back against Klobuchar’s bill, with the Huffington Post reporting last month that the NRA sent a letter to lawmakers blasting the measure as a backdoor attempt to limit gun ownership. The legislation “manipulates emotionally compelling issues such as ‘domestic violence’ and ‘stalking’ simply to cast as wide a net as possible for federal firearm prohibitions,” the NRA told lawmakers. The powerful pro-gun-rights group has in the past fought to allow domestic violence offenders to possess guns, unless they’re convicted felons.

re: #298 lawhawk

So, the right wing is predictably following script.

Terror attack occurs overseas (and overnight DC time (EST)).

President doesn’t immediately make statement (because information is sparse and WH needs to get information from its sources in France both via official public and via intel network channels).

RWNJ complains about lack of statement.

President makes statement denouncing terror attack.

RWNJ would normally criticize that the president didn’t mention this was a terror attack, but he’s included it here; rather RWNJ complains about lack of specificity about who carried out attack (ignoring that this is precisely the issue they complain about re: Benghazi - that the President identified groups responsible and what led up to the attack, which in hindsight turned out to be accurate, but at the time was not certain).

President will likely make additional statements later today.
RWNJ will complain that President is a Muslim interloper because he didn’t immediately state that Islamic terrorists were involved.

RWNJ will further complain that he didn’t specifically identify which terror group was involved.

The script is as predictable as it is tiresome and vexing to anyone who wants to cover presidential politics and foreign policy because the RWNJ aren’t interested in facts or logic or wait for accurate information to come in; it’s all about gotcha politics and soundbites that make FoxNews or the RWNJ twitter feed frenzy.

It’s tiresome and vexing all the more because it’s effective, especially at, if nothing else, poisoning the well enough to render actual debate impossible, making it all about who shouts the loudest and most often.

I fear that the right-wing crazies will have already won the day with this story before anyone sane outside of Obama (who’s already made a statement) can get their teeth into the actual details. And I mean that not just here, but in the increasingly xenophobic and anti-Muslim surges across Europe.

I think that reaction is hard-wired into our primate brains: we evolved in small tribes in which we recognized everyone. Anyone from outside this circle was seen as a potential threat.

Civilization, education and culture are about overcoming this instinct and learning that not everything foreign is a threat. But as the level of learning and culture recedes, we get more knee-jerk xenophobia coming through

But religions often package the hate and give it definition and motivation. Especially fundamentalist religions that always seem to need some other humans to look down upon.

If we could eliminate the “them” from “us and them” and get everyone to concentrate on the “us” it would be a big help to all mankind.

And with that bit of what I learned in 12 years of Catholic school and the avoidance of it all after that…time to get some tea and get busy. At least until I freeze in place.

Right now, it’s looking like AQ in Yemen was involved, but when the President made first statement, that wasn’t confirmed.

Jerusalem has been the capital of Israel since its founding. The Knesset and ministries are all in East Jerusalem, which was part of Israel from 1948 to the present (inside the Green Line). The US Congress authorized the move of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in a 1995 Act, but every President from the time that law was enacted until the present has used their executive powers to delay the move so as not to interfere with the peace process. That would be Clinton, Bush, and Obama.

It was adapted into a TV miniseries. 13 episodes is what it took to get the details right. (Labyrinthine, for sure!) And it was superb — shot on location — the British, German, Russian and Mexican characters were all played by actors native to those countries. Well worth searching out!

Apparently, the three gunmen are still on the loose - somewhere. I wonder if they’re still in Paris? It wouldn’t be hard to hop on a train to elsewhere; after all, Paris is a major European rail hub and to the best of my knowledge, no one got a look at the gunmen and they were well-concealed.

White House Questioned French Magazine’s Judgement in 2012

In 2012, the White House commented on the decision by Charlie Hebdo’s editors to publish a series of cartoons depicting the Prophet of Islam — just days after the 2012 attacks on the U.S. diplomatic posts in Benghazi and Cairo.

The attack on Benghazi continues to be a political headache for the White House, which initially attributed it to protesters angry over an anti-Islam Youtube video.

With that as the context, then-White House spokesman Jay Carney was asked to comment on Charlie Hebdo’s editors’ decision to lampoon the founding prophet of Islam.

He defended their right to do so while questioning the editorial judgment.

Yesterday:

After Rep. Darrell Issa’s (R-California) tenure on the House Oversight Committee expired at the end of the last session due to committee term limits, Utah Republican Jason Chaffetz was installed in his stead.

On Tuesday, Chaffetz announced via Twitter that he would be renewing subpoenas regarding documents releveant to the Fast & Furious gun-running scandal, in which the US Department of Justice is embroiled.

It seems to me that we need some clear rules if we’re going to condemn violent acts as terrorism. How about this:

Any person who encourages violent acts, or who commits, or threatens to commit, a violent act for political, ethnic, racial or religious reasons shall be deemed a terrorist and treated as such.

I’m sure that the right wing will go along.

North Korean pixels are too large due to older technology. They therefore plug the intertubes and prevent the smaller pixels from getting by.

The GOP hard at work:

The latter is the GOP threatening to cut funding to DHS over immigration fight.

But remember, we’re supposed to take them seriously because the GOP won. Oh, and they now try to take credit for the economic recovery in 2014, even though they fought the President every step of the way - and the recovery was despite the GOP, not because of it.

I note today that with a stronger majority Boehner appears to be willing to marginalize a couple of the nuts to serve as an example for the others. We’ll see how long the Establishment GOP feels they can continue to follow this course.

(Of course they could also just toss the Hastert Rule, make some deals using a moderate Dem/GOP majority and possibly pass some meaningful legislation that would prove this Congress capable of governing and leadership. {ROFLS})
