I just knew it was a matter of time before they blamed it on the President, period. If they didn’t cite Benghazi, they’d cite something else, like our leaving Iraq/Afghanistan, our not carpet-bombing ISIS into the stone age, or some other sign that he’s not “serious” about terrorism.

At the same time though, there are how many people howling because they think that Muslims aren’t condemning loudly enough all these horrific acts, and therefore it’s all Muslims?

I can understand why a Muslim might feel compelled to speak out even if the default assumption should be (like it is with Christianity) that the violence is perpetuated by extremist elements who do not represent the religion as a whole. Because sadly, that is not the default assumption for so many.

I’m still struggling to understand the scandal that supposedly is BENGHAZIIII!!!11!1!!.

First, there are protests, some violent, all over the Muslim world that everybody agreed were sparked by the stupid video, including one where the US Embassy compound in Cairo was breached.

Then there’s an attack on consular buildings in the next Muslim country over, leading to the tragic deaths of four Americans.

But apparently only a naive fool would think there could possibly be any connection at all between that attack which happened as all the other protests were happening, and the video which we all agree sparked those protests.

Then, by suggesting only a few days after the attack that they were linked somehow was hiding the REAL reason for the attacks, which was …?… what, exactly? And that it was done so that Obama wouldn’t lose the election which was to take place two months later, because presumably there would never be any more information coming out about the attacks in the following two months.

Is that about it?

the word muslim is like the word karma to me.

No one seems to remember what it means —when translated.

Karma = Action. Yet people use it like it is some secret mojo thing they have special access to.

Muslim = one who surrenders to god

Which, technically, is just about anyone who believes, IMHO.

Well, you could still compare the two - just as you can compare crime states from big states against small states (like say NY versus VT).

When you’ve got small populations, you can get noise in the same, like a single homicide in a small town can cause a massive change in per capita rates, compared with a big town or city. So, you end up averaging over a period of years to smooth the data and you can get a clearer picture.

The Right-Wing Terror Plot You Didn’t Hear About This Week

That narrative doesn’t fit very well with a terror case brought this week by the FBI against three Georgia men, all members of a right-wing militia that plotted to attack police and others. Yesterday, Terry Peace, Brian Cannon and Cory Williamson pleaded not guilty to a charge of domestic terrorism, as well as charges of conspiring to defraud the government. Northwest Georgia News explains:

This is sort of unusual for the standard extremist M.O. It has been more typical for them to go the suicide bomber route. Although plenty of non-religious extremists also off themselves after killing others, rather than attempt to escape or be imprisoned.

They probably left forensic evidence in one of the cars they abandoned during their getaway; maybe a fingerprint or something. Who knows? Maybe they bragged about it to someone, and that person in turn informed the police. My Sheikh in Berlin once said - quite bluntly - “If you know any Muslim who’s thinking of perpetrating a terrorist act, I urge you to go to the police immediately. If you’re too scared to do it, tell me - and I’ll go to the police and tell them.”

borage?
porridge

The rumor that “orange” rhymes with no other word is incorrect. Orange rhymes with Blorenge (a mountain in Wales) and sporange (a sac where spores are made). “Silver” has the same rumor going for it, but it actually rhymes with Wilver (a nickname) and chilver (a ewe lamb).

Some flights affected by officer-involved fatal shooting at Port Columbus

A Port Columbus police officer shot and killed a man after a confrontation outside the departures level of the terminal this afternoon.

Neither man has been identified.

A tweet from Port Columbus shortly after 3:30 p.m. said that some flights are being affected. Arriving passengers should check the flight schedule.

David Whitaker, vice president of business development and communications at Port Columbus, said the confrontation may have involved a vehicle.

re: #83 FemNaziBitch

Are they so much religious fanatics as much as tyrants who don’t want to give up their status-quo and use religion as an excuse to keep their serfs in line?

A little of column A, a little of column B?

Not trying to be flippant, but it gets very nuanced, because political cynicism versus religious sincerity isn’t a dichtomy.

The Saudis spent their money (and ours) on transforming Islamic nations into more conservative, theocratic ones. It was (and is) very much about imprinting their worldview on others. What we now think of as the status quo of Middle East is the product of a lot of work and cash being spread around, so there was a clear transformation process to create a more conservative governmental system.

And in turn, the thought process of the various terrorist organizations is transformative—making things more conservative, even than the Saudis that at one time backed them. Their imagined caliphates might be presented as a return to proper Islam, but rather like modern Christian reactionaries, the language of return to tradition can’t be taken as factual. The status quo of the past is just a projection.

It’s impossible to divide up the power-grubbing from the authentic pious motivation, because the latter has been built to encompass the latter. If someone holds to a theology that they, and only they, get to both make and break rules because their status as elect, is that cynicism or orthodoxy?

There’s other factors as well - the influence of Sayyid Qutb and his vanguardist ideology which in turn had a profound influence on later groups such as Al Qaeda. His work, Milestones, is considered one of the definitive works in the takfiri canon. Its impact is enormous - it pretty much created the modern-day jihadist movement.

Bwhahaha!

The article is great:

“[Smoltz] is a Hall-of-Famer. And I think the other big thing is that I think he’s a Democrat, and so… I know that as a Republican, that there’s some people who really don’t like that.” (Schilling says)

“If you’d just said, ‘vote Kerry,’ you might be in the Hall of Fame right now,” added one of the hosts. “Absolutely,” Schilling replied.

So, a couple of things here. First, demographically speaking, it’s hard to imagine many situations other than vying for a spot in the baseball Hall of Fame—an institution that boasts a predominately old, white, and male group of gatekeepers—in which being a Republican would be less harmful to one’s chances at success.

Second, John Smoltz is almost certainly not a Democrat. The man once compared homosexuality to bestiality, and gave a bunch of money to Mitt Romney’s campaign. Curt Schilling is dumb as hell.
