Sometimes I feel like the Y chromosome is a disease.

That cop - a Muslim, yes? - was a goddamned hero, if the accounts coming out are correct. He went up against two men with rifles, severely under-gunned, and walked into the threat, not away from it.

Looking at how tight the shot grouping is on the police car’s windshield, it’s amazing they weren’t all killed. Either the thugs were taking their time or they were firing from very close range. If you told me they had prior gun-handling experience, I’d believe it.

Awful, sickening stuff. Part of me just wants them to burn.

And she joined the black caucus. They hate Love now.

Interesting sentence that which I have highlighted in bold type.

Also, it sort of reminds me of the Supremes “You Can’t Hurry Love” in a weird way.

Think of the lyrics as if you are a RWNJ defending the lack of color in your party.

I need love, love
To ease my mind
I need to find, find someone to call mine
But mama said

You can’t hurry love
No, you just have to wait
She said love don’t come easy
It’s a game of give and take

You can’t hurry love
No, you just have to wait
You got to trust, give it time
No matter how long it takes

…con’t

So RWNJs…you tried to hurry Love because you thought she was someone you could call your own. But your mommas told you, Love don’t come easy! I guess you’ll just have to wait, and it is going to take a long time, if ever.

Just a heads up: Christopher Hitchens interviewed Alija Izzetbegovic, the late leader of Bosnia, and Hitchens asked him what he thought of the Rushdie fatwa. Alija’s response? He stated that while he would not have liked the book, he did state that it would be wrong to kill him for it. And this, coming from a man who was once himself jailed by Tito in the 80s for his Islamic teachings.

Some food for thought for the keyboard jihadis on Twitter, since those freaks and the wingnuts all feed off of each other.

Ancient scriptures are like time bombs. The original rants of ancient “prophets”, priests, rabbis and mullahs, the n-th century morality - all that is out of place in the modern world and liberal democracy. Religious moderates will reinterpret or conveniently forget the bad parts, but there will always be someone who still takes them seriously and acts on them. That’s why we can’t have nice things.

I don’t agree about the major tragedy. “The grandiosity, delusions of grandeur, the hate, the lust for violence”, on those I agree completely. But as vile as Anders Brevik is, his attack was planned with skill and precision. He’s a monster, but a meticulous monster.

210 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD  Jan 7, 2015 9:20:59pm

An all around jerk-off Max Blumenthal posts this (because, of course, he needs to be a jerk-off on every issue):

The problem is, of course, that Blumenthal ignores the context.
The context was a publication by a far-right rag Minute of a photo of Taubira with a caption about a banana, a usual racist trope. The Minute tried to defend themselves by referencing Charlie Hebdo, saying, no one gets offended about their covers. CH’s response:

“Some people have actually taken offense at the covers of Charlie Hebdo, among which the Catholic far-right which has sued us 12 times in 20 years (…) Minute does not defend the freedom of the press. It prepares the ground for future racist crimes.

An unequivocal condemnation of the racist photo. So what about this cartoon? This was juxtaposed in a 2013 edition of CH with the aforementioned Minute photo. The original was “the 1st degree”, this one was the “2nd degree”, or, “what they really mean”. Note the symbol of the National Front on the cartoon and the caption which satirizes this group, in effect calling them racists. This cartoon basically shows the minister through the eyes of the far right.
That’s right, Blumenthal turned CH’s condemnation of racism into an expression of racism. On the day of the murder.

A lot of my contemporaries still have trouble with the concept that not everyone pays for a texting plan and therefore each text costs me $$$.

You have to pay extra for a texting plan? Mine’s included in my China Mobile service plan.

YES.

I’m clinging to my unlimited data plan which means things like “unlimited texting” require extra fees which I don’t bother with. I have mostly convinced people not to text me.

I wish I had captured his page, but he edited the link out entirely. He had his website URL spliced to the Liberation URL with some extra stuff on the end. When I took the GotNews link off myself, that 404 page is what I got.

Trying the full garbled link would have got you a generic 404 page from your browser — here it is from downstairs: gotnews dot com/breaking-charliehebdo-terrorists-attended-radical-mosque-paris-jesuischarlie/%20http://liberation.fr portrait/1995/08/17/l-imam-que-la-france-habille-en-fou-de-dieu_141282 &usg=ALkJrhj230OyszW2lxVutuKh_EzcfqP2ew

I am going to try to win you all back over. I have been a foul up.

In regards to the shooters, I saw this just now on Wiki, sourced to the NYT.

One of the suspects in the killings, Hamyd Mourad, volunteerily surrenders to police in Charleville-Mézières while the other two suspects are still at large.

I think I have an idea, looking at details in the articles themselves.

Suspects

Saïd Kouachi and Chérif Kouachi were identified by French police as the main suspects in the shooting. The two Franco-Algerian brothers, both from Gennevilliers, are aged 34 and 32, respectively.[55][56] In 2008, Chérif Kouachi was convicted of terrorism charges and sentenced to three years in prison, along with 18 months of suspension, for having assisted in sending fighters to Iraq’s insurgency.[57][56] Chérif Kouachi said he was inspired to help Iraq’s insurgency by outrage at the torture of inmates of the U.S. prison at Abu Ghraib.[58][59]

Hamyd Mourad, an 18-year-old homeless man of unknown nationality, was identified by the police as a third suspect in the shooting.[60][61] He is believed to have been living recently in Charleville-Mezieres, approximately 140 miles northeast of Paris near France’s border with Belgium.[62] AFP news agency reported that France’s elite anti-terrorist unit had gone to Reims.[63][64] At 2.22 a.m. CET on 8 January, it was reported he had turned himself in at a Charleville-Mezieres police station.

Two nutjobs convince a third homeless man, possibly with mental defect, to join them?

My husband runs cell phones through the wash, so his is an el-cheapo model and the only time we actually call each other is either a request for an errand or one of us it out of town and the other calls the home #.

Under current regulations, coal companies pay royalties on the first sale to another company after mining coal on federal land. The coal then can be bought and sold multiple times until it reaches a final destination and is sold to an end user, such as a power plant where it is burned for electricity. By building up hundreds of subsidiaries, coal companies have been able to sell to their own companies and partners, allegedly paying royalties based on an artificially low sale price. The CAP analysis presents evidence that captive transactions are common practice in the coal industry and regularly exploited to evade royalty payments and maximize subsidies.

“Increasingly, the major coal companies are selling Powder River Basin coal not on an open market, but to an elaborate network of shell companies that they own and control,” said Matt Lee-Ashley, a Senior Fellow and Director of the Public Lands Project at CAP in a press release. “This gaming of the system is costing federal and state governments millions of dollars in lost royalty payments and giving the Powder River Basin an unfair advantage over other U.S. coal producing regions.”

Stupid and wrong, but predictable. Not the actions people actually fighting Salafist Radical Islam, but those who want to vent their hate and rage at their perceived inferiors. The bigotry of attacking mosques goes without saying, as a grenade attack on a mosque in Le Mans is morally the same as an IED attack on a black church in Birmingham, AL.

Good morning Lizards! 10 F in Center City Philadelphia. Some co-workers staying home, but others have been trickling in heavily bundled up. The native Brazilians especially so. (Was talking with one who is from Salvador, below freezing weather there is something very very rare.)

Feline Overlords are enjoying extra window sill space since I moved all the plants into the center of the room. Better view, but also frost on the windows to sniff at as well.

Less wind than last night, so walking in this is more comfortable even if it is 8-10 degrees colder out.

Time for a 2nd cup of coffee.

They’re bundled up pretty well from what I can see. But still the cold will start seeping in unless you’re moving around, especially with a wind blowing. Plus, with activity, you can easily start sweating in the coverall and that gets uncomfortable real quickly as well.

In addition to the additional hazards from wearing bulky clothing that may affect your balance, hearing, and maneuverability, cold surfaces (metal, ice, etc.), and the fact that it’s also a potential distraction (e.g. hurrying in order to get out of it.)

I-80 through PA is a nice “good weather” road when the rolling terrain is sort of enjoyable to drive through. Outside of that it should be avoided since the same rolling terrain is dangerous in wet/snowy conditions.

And the highway is particularly dangerous in winter. It is also within lake effect snow range of Lake Erie, and often right on the thaw/freeze line and thus more prone to ice than either I-90 to the north or I-70/I-76 farther south.

366 lawhawk  Jan 8, 2015 6:10:32am

Haven’t had a chance to read through all the overnight thread, but there’s some serious bad crazy out there - especially among the right wingers. Chuck Johnson isn’t some outlier. He’s preaching to the choir who think just as he does.

And it’s some sick stuff too. He’s all for ignoring the 1st Amendment when it suits him (banning Muslims from coming to America etc), and his followers go way over the line to calling for genocide - nuking all of them.

I tweeted out a bunch of stuff this morning about how the right wing thinks bombing someone is the solution - more than a few pundits were claiming that this is the result of the US policy not being harsh enough against ISIL.

That’s right folks, if you’re saying that the US hasn’t done enough, what more should be done and be specific. Let’s see that rabbit hole you’re going down towards calling for genocide (and already blocked one for the nuke ‘em all route). If you think that sending multiple airstrikes on a daily basis isn’t enough, or that providing aid to Kurds and Iraq, and carrying out UAV airstrikes against Islamic terror groups all over the Middle East and South Asia to go after ISIL, AQ in Yemen, AQ affiliates in South Asia, and Taliban forces in Afghanistan and Pakistan are chump change, then you’re clearly not paying attention.

And that’s really what this is all about; media outlets feed a steady stream of pundits who don’t know what they’re talking about and misinforming the public about what is going on - that Muslims are the predominant target of Islamic terrorists the world over, and that the attacks on the West are increasingly rare. They’re not completely prevented (no one ever is), but the threat is far less than say in Islamabad or Karachi, let alone Nigeria, where Boko Haram runs rampant and slaughters kids in schools and teachers on a regular basis (that’s a tactic shared by LeT and other Taliban elements in Pakistan too - go after soft targets rather than military).

Or, you get the “Europe brought this on itself for letting Muslims immigrate”. Ummm, wrong again. Muslims were among the victims here again too - one of the editors was Muslim as was one of the policemen gunned down in cold blood.

But if you want to play underlying sources, how about autocratic regimes in the ME that export their extremists, courtesy of petrodollars from the US and the West, or colonialism that split up the ME in the first place, or the Ottoman Empire whose decadence and failings influenced the rise of Islamic extremist thought as a way to restore the grandeur of the Islamic caliphate, or hey, why not go back to the Romans, Babylonians, or Persians.

I haven’t looked at the video. But if it was a well-prepared attack they might have worn shoes and then dropped them before entering the car to reduce evidence traces - especially if they might have stepped in blood, glass, or something else that could be easily connected to the attack site.
(Just thinking aloud here for the most part, but part of the logistics of such an operation is minimizing leads in getting traced.)

Love the way you worded that William. “Tries to be a Christian” is the way to go about it. Huckabee, as you are saying, already thinks he is and he is ‘saved’ so he can go on being a judgmental ass. It does not work that way.

Even if you are an atheist, you can still work to try to be a good human being. Huckabee even fails that.

Thinking on it more I could see this scenario.

Gunman drops wallet/holder out of car in haste to get to the officer that was executed on sidewalk. Returning he picks up bundle/wallet which had hit the ground. ID is dislodged a bit from impact with the ground and falls out when he gets back into car (unnoticed by him in haste). Ditch car with ID still inside. Found by cops and identified.

An all around jerk-off Max Blumenthal posts this (because, of course, he needs to be a jerk-off on every issue):

[Embedded content]

The problem is, of course, that Blumenthal ignores the context.
The context was a publication by a far-right rag Minute of a photo of Taubira with a caption about a banana, a usual racist trope. The Minute tried to defend themselves by referencing Charlie Hebdo, saying, no one gets offended about their covers. CH’s response:

An unequivocal condemnation of the racist photo. So what about this cartoon? This was juxtaposed in a 2013 edition of CH with the aforementioned Minute photo. The original was “the 1st degree”, this one was the “2nd degree”, or, “what they really mean”. Note the symbol of the National Front on the cartoon and the caption which satirizes this group, in effect calling them racists. This cartoon basically shows the minister through the eyes of the far right.
That’s right, Blumenthal turned CH’s condemnation of racism into an expression of racism. On the day of the murder.

It’s nice to know that Hebdo sought to fight racism. Clearly this image was one such effort. But I have to say that several of his depictions of Arabs look startlingly like the ones of Jews nazis put in their propaganda with grossly enlarged hook noses. I find the bulk of his stuff repellent. No one should be killed over it, but I am sorry it has enough of a market to keep it funded. I learned today from the BBC that French law prohibits the census to ask a person’s religious affiliation or ethnic background. So French RWNJs can overinflate the number of Muslims and no one can contradict them

I recall reading that somewhere - it has to do with laïte, the French concept of secularism.

Thus, French RWNJ’s can claim THERE’S 100 BAZILLION MUSLIMS IN FRANCE!! pretty much with impunity.

That is one of the reasons that we have free speech: often what we see as “racial animus” is actually intended as a caricature of people who truly hold those views.

Do you think that the people who presented us characters like Alf Garnett or Archie Bunker held those racist views? They wanted to make fun of those very sorts of people.

This could be the best article I’ve read about the CH attack so far:

salon.com

Excerpt:

The civil society made possible by Western capitalism is a great accomplishment, and also one that has external costs and consequences we rarely witness. One can believe both things at once. Similarly, the carnage in Paris represents a tiny proportion of the bloodshed inflicted on civilians in the Arab-Muslim world by both foreign military forces and Islamic militants. At virtually the same time as the Charlie Hebdo attack, 37 people were killed in a terrorist bombing in Yemen, likely the work of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula. (Another 26 people died there last week in a suicide bombing.) None of which excuses the criminality of the Paris attack in the slightest, or lessens its horror.

Heh.

Meanwhile, still no real coverage of the bombing of the NAACP offices in Colorado. Pathetic. Domestic terrorists carry out attack, and the media gives a collective shrug. I get that it’s not the top story - that’d be the Charlie Hebdo bombing, but this should be right behind it.

And if you think that the lack of casualties is reason enough to demote it as a story, consider then that the Times Square bombing didn’t result in any casualties either. Yet that was plastered coverage wall to wall.

I can’t quite pin my finger on why. ////11ty

Oh, and I get that some people will point out that the reason that the TS bombing got higher billing was because it was Times Square, and that it was a terrorist who was inspired by Islamic terror groups, but then again given what we know so far of the NAACP bombing it’s likely someone who is inspired by right wing extremists or white nationalists - who are just as much of a threat to people. But because this was in the hinterlands (Colorado), it simply doesn’t rate.

The media in this country sucks. Bleed = it leads.

My view (which I don’t intend to push on anyone particularly hard) is that this dualism between “speech” and “action” is too neat and doesn’t reflect what happens in the real world well enough. I think there need to be some curtailments on speech, in some cases. Verbal bullying of children and teens would be an example; there are others.

But I will agree that the US position is close to being ideal. In general it’s probably better to err on that side of the line than the other.

Correct, there are, but as Sergey said in his #135, “Vulgarity for the sake of vulgarity doesn’t help though.” Some of the cartoons were just plain vulgar, unnecessarily so. I found many of them disgusting—not just the ones about Muslims, but the ones about other religions too.

I mean seriously, what’s the point, just to offend? Because that’s all most people belonging to those (religious) groups are going to see—any other message will be completely lost. If the point is to educate or communicate, then they’re doing it wrong. I’m not sure when needless vulgarity began being perceived as brave truth-telling, but I don’t buy it.

re: #461 iossarian

My view (which I don’t intend to push on anyone particularly hard) is that this dualism between “speech” and “action” is too neat and doesn’t reflect what happens in the real world well enough. I think there need to be some curtailments on speech, in some cases. Verbal bullying of children and teens would be an example; there are others.

But I will agree that the US position is close to being ideal. In general it’s probably better to err on that side of the line than the other.

I was talking about adults. We certainly observe restrictions regarding minors.

A lot of humor goes around several corners to make its point, the fact that it offends a few people along the way is irrelevant.

I was at a biker festival in Germany, some fellow there was wearing a T-shirt covered in total white supremacist text…in English. And, of course, it was shot through with grammatical and spelling errors. I resisted my temptation to approach him with a marker and correct the errors…

I think a big part of America’s unchecked militarism is that it’s become a social taboo to criticize the military at any time, in any place. I think one major point to some people being deliberately offensive is that it keeps open the possibility of being mildly offensive and irreverent for everyone else.

I hear you, but being offensive isn’t the same as being needlessly vulgar, just like there’s a point at which criticism of Islam, Judaism, Christianity, atheism, blacks, hispanics, etc. ceases being such and crosses over into bigotry/racism.

Criticism can be constructive, but I’ve never heard of such a thing as “constructive vulgarity”.

I agree about humor, and it seems we also agree somewhat about balancing the protection of vulnerable people against unlimited speech.

When it comes to adults, that’s where it gets really complicated IMO. There are issues of power imbalance and social injustice which I think are reinforced by unchecked “speech”. Although maybe it would be more accurate for me to say that there are forms of behavior that get characterized as “speech” in the US which I don’t think deserve the same level of protection as actual making-a-noise-via-my-mouth speech.

With freedom of speech also comes the responsibility not to be a dick for no good reason, which is fundamentally the problem, isn’t it?

Some comedians rely excessively on vulgarity. If they are talented, you say “OK it’s gross but it made me LOL” If they are less talented you say “How disgusting”

There are some comedians (no names) who are excessively vile and disgusting and racist and hateful because they lack the talent to be actually funny.

There are three reasons for that:

There was a suicide bombing attack in Istanbul the other day. At first, a far-left group, the DHKP/C, took credit for it. However, it’s now turned out that the bomber was a Russian woman, a Russian national who entered Turkey in June 2014 as a tourist and she may have been one of the Chechen “black widows” - the Turks are currently exploring that angle.

That’s where context is everything. In context, CH were always attacking the leaders of groups that they saw as exerting various forms of social or physical oppression on people. At some point, though, that starts to grate if the person doing the attacking isn’t closely connected enough to the actual oppressed groups. That’s the whole “they may be assholes but they’re our assholes” thing.

Not sure that is SMOTI material; an actual report claimed at least two attacks on or around mosques. The kebab location was near a mosque.

One attack took place at a kebab shop next to a mosque in the town of Villefranche-sur-Saône, north of Lyon.

A blast was reported at about 6am and destroyed the glass frontage of the kebab shop. No injuries were reported.

Hand grenades were reportedly thrown at another mosque in Le Mans, which lies south west of Paris.

Four training grenades were lobbed into the mosque, local media said.

SMOTI material, however, was trying to blame one of the Charlie Hebdo editors for letting the gunmen into the building and then cowering under her desk. I think it was a tweet, but haven’t been able to find it since. Blaming victims. Lovely attitude there.

I’m pretty sure SSMOTI was whipping up his followers to cheer on the attacks.

So too does Sen. Lindsay Graham.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said the deadly Paris attack on Wednesday shows the U.S. faces a “religious war” with Islamic extremists, and he blamed President Obama’s policies for “getting a lot of people killed.”

Appearing on Fox News’s “America’s Newsroom” on Thursday, Graham said Obama’s policies “are making us very much less safe here at home.”

He goes on to quote closing Gitmo (which so far hasn’t happened, and any released recidivists were on Bush’s watch, not Obama’s), claiming a treasure trove of intel, even though there’s no proof that anyone currently in Gitmo has actionable intel, or that treating them in the criminal justice system has harmed US national security, or well, that anyone has actually been killed (other than terrorists eliminated by the ongoing UAV attacks against targets of opportunity or airstrikes against ISIL).

Graham simply flings nonsense up against the wall to see what sticks, and Hewitt and other right wingers lap that crap up.

I wonder how many of the murdered Parisians, including police, would be alive today had they been armed?

At least as many and the terrorists would have a few more guns. They shot down two armed, trained policemen. Untrained, unprepared people with guns would be dead before they got the safety off.

Speaking of Colorado Springs (or, in the case of upchuck, Denver):

Zany CO Springs Mayoral Candidate In Jail For Menacing With AR-15, Other Hijinks

According to her Facebook page, Justine Herring is the next mayor of Colorado Springs. According to Colorado Springs law enforcement, Justine Herring is in jail for pointing an AR-15 assault rifle at her boyfriend in a public park, and, in a separate incident, impersonating an ATF agent.

Because stopping would have accomplished what exactly. Be specific there right wingers? Hoping the President would give apologies for what, that GOPers in Congress continue screwing over veterans in every way imaginable?

Long waits? That’s inexcusable, and heads should roll (and some did). But what exactly has the GOP done to fix the problem? They’re agitating once again for more military action, even as they’re doing whatever they can to undermine the support net for servicemembers once they separate from service. They’ve fought against minimum wage hikes (which also affect service members out of service); they’ve fought pay hikes for in-service, etc.

Far too many in the GOP sees the military as disposable heroes. Out of sight. Out of mind.

My response, which can’t be printed, will boil down to this:

Because invading Iraq, Afghanistan, and killing tens of thousands of terrorists in both countries (along with UAV strikes and airstrikes in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and elsewhere) including the leaders who carried out major terror attacks against the US domestically and overseas, is somehow a sign of weakness?

Since Obama took office, he’s made sure AQ has gone through a steady stream of #2s (something that Chuckles would know all about, but I digress), and OBL was killed on Pakistani soil by US special forces.

Well, I’m off to bed. Going to be manning the “Be A Diver” booth and demo tank at the Nashville Boat Show starting tomorrow. Going to be a very brisk 1 degree or so tomorrow AM. When I was down helping with the setup on Tuesday, they were bringing in the Geico Offshore Racing Boat. (Miss Geico). What a way to turn lots of dollars into noise.
