Neil deGrasse Tyson Will Host New Science-Oriented Late Night Talk Show

More of this, please
Science • Views: 35,923

What a great idea — a late night talk/variety show dedicated to science, hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson. I’ll be eagerly looking forward to this one.

“Cosmos allowed us to share the awesome power of the universe with a global audience in ways that we never thought possible,” said Tyson. “To be able to continue to spread wonder and excitement through Star Talk, which is a true passion project for me, is beyond exciting. And National Geographic Channel is the perfect home as we continue to explore the universe.”

“This is kind of low-risk, I think, for National Geographic,” Tyson told the crowd at the Television Critics Association press tour. “Star Talk exists as a thriving podcast right now.”

Star Talk will indeed follow a similar format to Tyson’s podcast, which marries science and popular culture and feature interviews with celebrities, comedians and scientists. He’s still sorting through all of the elements that he’ll add to the television iteration, but he does intend to give Bill Nye a platform for a minute-long rant in each show, much as Andy Rooney had for many years on CBS’ 60 Minutes.

CNN had a long article about jihadists in France and I was shocked that they have well over a hundred who have gone to fight with ISIS but then returned home to France. Maybe if people choose to leave the country to join a terrorist army they should lose their citizenship?

I expect to see some (D) party discipline vs. this kind of crap. A filibuster in the Senate sounds like a good start, with an Obama veto as a backup plan.

Of course, that will need to be the approach for pretty much anything that gets out of the House other than naming post offices.

It’s just another version of “speeding up the line” that they used to do in factories. You work harder, for shorter hours, and no benefits, and your “work week” is different every single week in many sectors, like retail, service, etc.

My grandson works at least 40 hrs a week, but he doesn’t know from week to week which days he’ll work or be off. It’s very unsettling, although if he knows in advance of an appt or needs to be off, his boss is pretty amenable to giving him that day off. Still. It’s not the 5 consecutive day, 40 hr week that I had as an office worker for so many years.

And I’m so old, I can remember medical insurance costing me nothing—all paid by the employer. I paid a couple of bucks a week to cover my 2 kids.

Sure, but as totally retarded as those situations are, he still has a subatomic degree of wiggle room. Maybe Corey Booker was actually living in a secret Soros funded lair in Turkmenistan and using Obama’s space-time teleporter to commute to his office every day. Mike Brown’s record, if there is one, is sealed. He’s still making claims about the unprovable in those instances.

Whereas anybody can open up the file he posted and see that it doesn’t contain what he says it contains. If they want to go a step further they can take the file to the nearest university biology department and confirm this using IMP. There’s no wiggle room here, none.

That’s what used to happen in a lot of jobs anyway. Employers (like Lowe’s where I worked my “retirement” job) would keep you just under 40 hours so they wouldn’t have to offer full time bennies. You were considered part time and full time jobs were relics.

I honestly think wingnuts are incapable of recognizing reality. Reality conflicts with their politics, and is therefore getting rejected more and more thoroughly each year.

Next on TLC, “My Husband’s Not Gay.”

TLC’s new show, which follows a group of men who admit to being attracted to other men but have chosen to date and marry women, has been widely criticized by members of the LGBT community for promoting the widely discredited practice of “ex-gay” or “reparative” therapy.

GLAAD has condemned the program, calling it “downright irresponsible” and warning that it puts “countless young LGBT people in harm’s way.” Truth Wins Out, a group dedicated to stopping “ex-gay” therapy, has pointed out that many of the shows stars are closely affiliated with North Star, a fringe Mormon “ex-gay” group. So far, a change.org petition calling for the show’s cancellation has gathered nearly 100,000 signatures.

TLC has thus far shrugged off the criticism. “TLC has long shared compelling stories about real people and different ways of life, without judgment,” the network said in a statement. “The individuals featured in this one-hour special reveal the decisions they have made, and speak only for themselves.”

From one of the stupidest bloggers in Virginia:

Former Governor Bob McDonnell and his team are appealing the verdict in the case of “Johnnie Williams did nothing wrong, but McDonnell is guilty anyway.” They have also asked that McDonnell remain free during that process.

Of course, the mountains of character support that led the judge to decide on a mere 24-month sentence when prosecutors had wanted up a decade or more of prison time speaks to why McDonnell should remain free during the process. He certainly is no flight risk, and there were rulings throughout the trial that will be under great scrutiny at the appellate level.

But to me, the most important point is that the shortness of the sentence makes it a denial of McDonnell’s constitutional rights to due process if he spends his period of appeal behind bars.

I’m sure that conservatives in Virginia will surely be behind granting automatic bail to anyone appealing a federal conviction…any time now…any time…

I honestly think wingnuts are incapable of recognizing reality. Reality conflicts with their politics, and is therefore getting rejected more and more thoroughly each year.

20 years from now, these yokels will likely be bleating about ‘Jewish science’ or some similarly dangerous drivel. The Conservapedia entry on Einstein and relativity (in physics) is an instructive bit of foreshadowing.

Nothing can be recognized if you refuse to want to see it. And they do refuse to see the reality in oh so many things.

CCJ already knows the truth, like any other well-trained wingnut. For a wingnut, it is categorically impossible for racism to be a problem in the US. Therefore any apparent incident of racism (e.g., an attack against an NAACP facility) must be explained away as a hoax or some other less serious thing.

As always, the ideology comes first and the facts are altered and arranged to best serve the desired narrative.

Prediction: Chuck is going after Kevin McCarthy (R - Bakersfield, CA). He’s going to try and prove that McCarthy’s story about starting his first business with $5000 from winning the Lottery is false.

Born in Bakersfield, McCarthy is a fourth-generation resident of Kern County. He states that he is the first Republican in his immediate family.[3][4] His father was a fireman and his mother was a homemaker.[4] In one campaign ad, he claimed that, “Jeremiah McCarthy’s house still stands”. At the age of 19 he opened his first business, a deli, after winning five thousand dollars from a lottery ticket.

CCJ retweeted and favorited the last one.

∴ My hypothesis is that he’s going after McCarthy, and plans to “prove” that the deli story is a lie. Of course nowhere is it stated that the deli was funded entirely by the lottery winnings, and he would have opened the deli in 1984 when $5000 went a long further. Cost of living calculator says it’s equivalent to $11,364 today.

I pretty much figured it was McCarthy.
These idiots really don’t understand a damned thing.

And even if the little turd finds that McCarthy did not fully fund his deli (not that he ever said that to begin with) with his lottery winnings, so what? Who does upchuck think will care about a nothingburger like that? The GOP doesn’t care about convicted felons, or racists, or bat-shit crazy members—why would they care about something as ridiculously insignificant as that?

It will probably have the same devastating effect as his “bombshell” that NdGT wasn’t as close with Carl Sagan as he once said zzzzzzzzz. Oops, sorry, I fell asleep mid-bombshell.

I just got the weirdest of calls. An 855 number said they were calling me about my Microsoft computer. I told them I do not have a Microsoft computer and not to call me again. Fortunately my iPhone lets me block these folks.

Ahh, the “Microsoft/Windows support” scam…

re: #181 b_sharp

I have a multifunction that has fax capability.

I not only still have one of those, but I even have a dedicated phone line for it (well—a distinct ring feature.) And it rings a LOT. Many middle-of-the-night phantom faxes (I turned the upstairs ringer off long ago) but a lot of wrong numbers too.

Last week, some lady from California called it many times, and left messages about how she really wanted to pay her bill but couldn’t find it so please call her so she could pay it over the phone. She sounded really old and really stressed, so I’ve called her back twice to tell her that she’s calling a wrong number. Haven’t heard from her in a day or two, so maybe she’s figured it all out.

I’ve been getting another bunch of calls from people trying to reach their doctor about a prescription. One the other day sounded like she was in tears, so I had her hold on and looked up the doctor’s number for her. It was similar to mine—9s where mine are 0s. She thanked me about a thousand times.

So far I’ve seen:
- “Well, it’s not REALLY free, someone always has to pay!!!!”
- “We should spend that money on roads and bridges!”
- “This will just devalue everyone else’s college degree.”
- “This is just two year degrees to turn out cogs for low paying ‘green jobs’.”

Eventually something will stick.

In the Sixties California Junior Colleges didn’t charge tuition fees. You paid for your books and a parking sticker (If you needed one) and that was it. Of course that was long before the blessings of Prop. 13 were conferred on commercial property owners hard working householders.

Obama sure is driving the wingnuts crazy in this his lameduck session. Keeps announcing stuff. Why won’t the president lead?

223 ObserverArt  Jan 8, 2015 5:13:50pm

It’s pretty clear the Republicans don’t want anyone to get ahead. Hell, it might cost the average 1%er a few more dollars and they can’t have that.

But, I do wonder when the line will be crossed where their own non 1%er supporters figure out that is the GOP plan. All they do is protect the money of the money men.

224 Higgs Boson's Mate  Jan 8, 2015 5:14:01pm

The Republicans already have an answer to Obama’s free community college idea. “There’s no need to educate anyone any more because we’re not going to create a single fucking job.”

Aren’t these the same people who bitch at length about how spend in infrastructure should be done by the private sector, because if the government does it, it’s “taking money from people”?

re: #220 Higgs Boson’s Mate

Community colleges here are still good deals, though.

However, the regents have changed the charter so us old folks who want continuing education are less favored.

But…

Given the high percentage of Californians who already have attended a community college out here, if that is what they wanted to do, I’m kind of surprised if President Obama’s proposal will affect the attendance much.

Certainly there could be some relief for impacted classes, but I bet attendance will increase only by 10 or 20%.

Other states will vary of course.
