Prosecutors Said to Recommend Charges Against Former Gen. David Petraeus

WASHINGTON — The F.B.I. and Justice Department prosecutors have recommended bringing felony charges against retired Gen. David H. Petraeus for providing classified information to his former mistress while he was director of the C.I.A., officials said, leaving Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. to decide whether to seek an indictment that could send the pre-eminent military officer of his generation to prison.

The Justice Department investigation stems from an affair Mr. Petraeus had with Paula Broadwell, an Army Reserve officer who was writing his biography, and focuses on whether he gave her access to his C.I.A. email account and other highly classified information. F.B.I. agents discovered classified documents on her computer after Mr. Petraeus resigned from the C.I.A. in 2012 when the affair became public.

Some interesting fallout from the Catholic League’s Bill Donohue’s implicit support for the terrorists who attacked the cartoonists at Charlie Hebdo, and from an unlikely source.

He went on FoxNews yesterday for an interview regarding some of his inflammatory statements, and in his screed about how their satire should not have been allowed to be published, he made a rather interesting comparison with a rather famous American publisher who had a habit of publishing a lot of offensive material - namely Larry Flynt.

When that comparison was made, Megyn Kelly hit him back with it - HARD - and she got it exactly right.

Megyn Kelly puts Bill Donohue in his place by linking Larry Flynt and Charlie Hebdo

“I understand you didn’t like the message,” Kelly said, before asking him, “Did you really think they were not courageous in the face of death threats to be publishing what they did?”

“No. I think, first of all, they’re pornographers disguised as satirists,” Donohue replied. “We’re not talking about Mel Brooks. We’re talking about the functional equivalent of Larry Flynt going to print.”

While Donohue compared the French satirists to the Hustler publisher in a derisive manner, Kelly argued that the Supreme Court’s 1988 decision affirming Flynt’s right to mock public figures protected even “scatological” satire, calling it “the bedrock of the First Amendment.”

“The political cartoon is a weapon of attack, of scorn and ridicule and satire; it is least effective when it tries to pat some politician on the back,” she said, quoting from Chief Justice William Rehnquist’s decision. “It is usually as welcome as a bee sting and is always controversial in some quarters.”

“Here’s my response: if that’s the case, why don’t you show, right now, what they put on in those scatological comics?” Donohue asked her.

“It is the case,” Kelly replied, as she ended the segment.

It’s possible there may have been an extremist attack the other day in Turkey. A female suicide bomber blew herself up in a police station in a tourist area of Istanbul. At first, a far-left group took credit for the attack, but it’s emerged that the bomber was actually a Russian national, and Turkish Intelligence (MIT) is investigating as to whether she had any links to IS or al-Qaeda or other radical groups.

Depends on the DoJ. Yep:

Two Islamist newspapers in Turkey have drawn ire on social media with their headlines that “justified” the deadly attack on a French satirical newspaper.

Hours after gunmen stormed the offices of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in Paris, chanting “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest), Yeni Akit newspaper chose the title, “Attack on the magazine that provoked Muslims.”

Several reader comments also appeared on Yeni Akit’s Facebook page, which hailed the bloodshed as “revenge” for the magazine’s decision to publish cartoons that criticized the Prophet Mohammad.

“I hope they will continue [to kill] infidels,” said one reader on the website, while another reader wrote “Thanks to those who did it.”

The newspaper then changed the headline of the story to “the great provocation in Paris.”

Türkiye, another newspaper close to the Turkish government, chose the headline: “Attack on the magazine that insulted our Prophet.”

After a flood of reactions on Twitter, including ones that accuse it of “justifying a terror attack,” the newspaper changed the headline to “Attack on the magazine that published ugly cartoons of our Prophet.”

re: #104 Higgs Boson’s Mate

Depends on the DoJ. Considering this DoJ’s non-response to CIA torture I wouldn’t look for much more than a negotiated agreement that results in Petraeus losing a star and being told that he was very naughty. Personally, I’d like to see him busted down to Private and sent to Ft. Leavenworth for a long stretch, but RHIP.

Will be interesting to see how this shakes out. I can’t help but thing the “let the past stay in the past” attitude wouldn’t follow through to Petraeus’ actions as Obama’s CIA head, but weirder shit happens. Regardless, I hope his reputation is totally fucked because of this.

I agree. Nothing sets off waves of Democratic pants-wetting like having Republicans accuse them of hating the troops. This may become another one of those depressingly more frequent situations where Democrats do nothing for fear of offending people who wouldn’t vote for them anyway.

142 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD  Jan 9, 2015 5:07:08pm

Both blasphemy and racism can be offensive as hell (well, racism is always offensive). They’re still radically different. [Yes, blasphemy can be used as a tool to spread racism, yada yada, actually almost anything can.]
The difference: blasphemy serves an important social role. Racism doesn’t.

So no, by reposting Nazi cartoons you’re not being principled ever.
Whether you’re being principled in reposting blasphemous cartoons (or just using them as a tool to spread bigotry) depends on context (intent etc.).

Will chat with my Imam in the next week or so.

Essentially, there is a disconnect between me and almost everyone around me.

They are telling to wait, and someone will appear. I have already derided one friend for this train of thought, referring to it being the equivalent of a woman falling from the sky. Not to mention no one has exactly proposed how I would exactly meet someone, as Mosques to not have any events for people my age to meet others of the other gender. People usually will find others through family connections, which I do not have on account of me being a convert. And I am still incredibly reticent to marry a convert, considering the constant news stories I see of converts my age going off half-cocked.

I am going to note, I was going to write a page on this, under the Theory that Clara’s little scene throwing keys into the volcano got the Doctor’s attention. Mom objected to it, as she saw the episode, it was true that she did get his attention, she also had gone certifiable. Also she said the same damn stupid thing.

re: #185 The War TARDIS

What you have to do is get rid of whatever artificial timeline you have in your head to find someone. The reason you’re having such a hard time with it is because you’ve got all these stipulations in your head and some pre-determined idea of when you’re supposed to fall in love or have someone in your life.

Being in a relationship isn’t going to magically cure what you endured in your childhood. If anything, you should work on that first BEFORE getting into a relationship, otherwise you risk putting unrealistic expectations on whoever you end up with.

You never go to a party? Never talk to people online? Never talk about Doctor Who topics with other fans? Play video games?

I met my husband playing an MMO. Which I was playing because I enjoyed it, not because I was looking to meet the love of my life. And we got to know each other without pressure, and it’s worked out fantastically.

If you are going to put the responsibility of your happiness on someone else in its entirety, they are never going to be able to live up to your expectations, and you are going to be miserable. And eventually, they may not be able to deal with the pressure. Something to think about.

Can’t beat a bit of Laibach, really. That video definitely requires discussion at some point :)

Professional provocateurs :)

Laibach has frequently been accused of both far left and far right political stances due to their use of uniforms and totalitarian-style aesthetics. They were also accused of being members of the neo-nationalism movement, which reincarnates modern ideas of nationalism. When confronted with such accusations, Laibach are quoted as replying with the ambiguous response “We are fascists as much as Hitler was a painter”.[14]
The members of Laibach are notorious for rarely stepping out of character. Some releases feature artwork by the Communist and early Dada artist/satirist John Heartfield. Laibach concerts have sometimes aesthetically appeared as political rallies. When interviewed, they answer in wry manifestos, showing a paradoxical lust for, and condemnation of, authority.[14]
Richard Wolfson wrote of the group:
” Laibach’s method is extremely simple, effective and horribly open to misinterpretation. First of all, they absorb the mannerisms of the enemy, adopting all the seductive trappings and symbols of state power, and then they exaggerate everything to the edge of parody… Next they turn their focus to highly charged issues — the West’s fear of immigrants from Eastern Europe, the power games of the EU, the analogies between Western democracy and totalitarianism.[15]

That said, their political theory does seem to apply the sentiment that is usually saved for the US to the UK:
Laibach - Anglia
Which reminded me of some Russian CTs that “it is England that actually pulls all the strings” :)

Marrying within your faith is fine. Placing unrealistic expectations on someone else is not.

Why not try finding local meetups of fellow geeks? There might even be a local group of Muslims who get together and hang out and talk about TV and games and whatever. If there’s not, start one of your own. You might be surprised by the people you meet.

If you go in with pre-set expectations of who’s acceptable to you and who’s not, you’re never going to be happy. You need to let people be themselves instead of trying to fit them into certain molds.

Muslims, at least the ones I am in contact aren’t the partying type.

Online, I can say, has failed. There are incredibly few Muslim Doctor Who fans, and the video games I play are not the popular ones that everyone talks about.

And I do want to marry young.

Sister’s plane had to be switched because of a “small discrepancy between the fuel gauge and what the tank actually had, along the order of 2000 gallons or so” according to what she was told.

She’s still doing better than the baby. She might even take off in the next hour!

I’m so old that I remember when fuel was so expensive that airlines kept track of how much they used.

Back in my 20’s I had a friend who was determined to marry young, start a family, etc. By the time she was 30 she’d gotten divorced. Twice.

Marriage is not something you can force. Neither are relationships. You have to let them develop on their own and you have to let people be themselves.

Have you really thought about all the pressure you’re putting on the women you’re trying to build a relationship with? They have to fit your perfect vision of what your wife should be, carry responsibility for fulfilling your desire for a loving family, and be ready to commit NOW.

Desperation is not attractive to most women. Speaking as one.

I am trying to avoid other converts for the simple reason that I see many converts going off half-cocked (Remember Moore, a few months ago?), and that I am someone who, when given emotional support, can be manipulated.

I know what a relationship would entail. I am also trying to avoid trouble. American Converts have a higher chance of being trouble than those born into it.

Get a job in Kosovo, for the UN, teaching English, whatever you can find. It’s a Muslim country and they fucking love Americans there. Highest approval rating of the United States in all of Europe.

If I knew there was a person out there, I would relax and slow down.

But since I don’t know they are out there, because I haven’t met anyone yet, they don’t exist. I won’t go on faith on other people saying things, I need the proof in front of me. EIther in the form of a person, or someone coming up with airtight logic.

Nah, the baby is my baby sister, age 21. Both were traveling today - the one to visit me and the baby back for the last semester of college. One flight delayed, one cancelled and a car rented.

All I can say is that with this attitude, you are far more likely to get into a relationship that has the potential to cause you trouble than you think you’re avoiding with your rules (like no converts to Islam, lifelong Muslims only).

If you try to apply airtight logic to a problem like this, all you will end up doing is constructing an impossibility proof. I’ve been there and done that, and it stinks on ice.

That right there is your red flag. You need to overcome the emotional trauma you went through first, *then* think about a relationship.

Right now you’re not going to trust that anyone you’re in a relationship with is going to stick around. You’re reacting to what you went through by becoming controlling in the other direction. You’re so scared of being abandoned or ending up along that you’re putting unrealistic expectations, checklists, demands for everything to unfold neatly right now, etc. on others. That’s not fair to them or to you.

Perhaps you can show your Imam the relevant posts in this thread, both your comments and the replies? You’ve outlined the problem quite clearly in this series of posts, and there’s a great deal of wisdom in the feedback. It might be a concise way of presenting the problem, and it might be interesting to see if he agrees with your lizard friends.

(My very subjective experience — it’s hard to remember everything you wanted to say in the limited time you have with a mentor. Something in writing can be a memory jog and a starting point.)

243 lostlakehiker  Jan 10, 2015 12:14:56pm

Romney? How can he not realize that what he said during the 2012 contest has not gone away? It cannot be expunged from the record. And in the intervening four years, the fraction of the US population that is receiving disability income has risen substantially. The fraction receiving social security has gone up. The fraction of the population that is on the cusp of social security age has also gone up, and this demographic punches above its weight when it comes to getting out and voting.

How can he hope to win over a voting public that is more dependent than ever on the government? How can he hope to shed the stigma of his wealth? No matter how fair and square he earned it, it marks him.

Will he be any better at debate than last time? No. Of course not. His skill set is what it is, and it is insufficient to the demands of presidential campaigning. The Republican party has, perhaps, a bit of an opportunity in 2016, but this opportunity cannot be seized by running the Adlai Stevenson of the Right a second time.

The country is not happy. We’re not happy with the upshot of our last several presidents. Whoever nominates MoreOfTheSame is just asking for a whuppin.
