Just came across this gorgeous live performance of one of Emmylou Harris’s best songs, with Mark Knopfler on guitar. (The aspect ratio of the video is a bit stretched out vertically but the sound is great.)

Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris performing live during their tour ‘All the roadrunning’. From the DVD ‘Real Live Roadrunning’ recorded at Gibson Amphitheatre 2006.

Nice!

Mark Knopfler is one of my favorite guitarists. Very distinctive style, I can usually identify his playing when I hear a tune. My spouse took me to a Mark Knopfler concert for my birthday one year. Even though she wasn’t a big fan before that, we both agreed it was one of the most enjoyable concerts we’ve attended.

Wish I’d seen this tour.

He’s my wife’s favourite songwriter/musician.

She’s dragged me to two Knopfler concerts.

(Actually I think he’s a good guitarist, perhaps not technically, but artistically)

So barring some crazy magical ending where The Flash comes to score 2 touchdowns in the next :34 seconds, it’s going to be Indy vs. New England in the AFC.

Green Bay vs. Seattle next week is going to be awesome. Can’t wait.

He said: “In Britain, it’s not just no-go zones, there are actual cities like Birmingham that are totally Muslim where non-Muslims just simply don’t go in.

𠇊nd, parts of London, there are actually Muslim religious police that actually beat and actually wound seriously anyone who doesn’t dress according to religious Muslim attire.”

re: #53 Gus

Bigots like Spencer depend on convincing people that they’re making a reasoned critique of Islamist ideology. The CH situation is a perfect opportunity for them to spread their poison, because it deeply offended liberals as well as right wingers (and rightly so!) to see free speech so clearly threatened.

That’s also why the jihadists commit these kinds of monstrous crimes — to drive a wedge between Muslims and Western society in general.

61 Kryptik  Jan 11, 2015 5:17:45pm

re: #53 Gus

This is the despair i have regarding gun control/gun rights issues as well as shit like this. Just…the seductive lure of reactionary fear-based crazy has lured far too many people who I knew as staunchly liberal toward the right wing to the point of being utterly unreachable on everything else. Usually running screamingly so toward the right.

This is why I have so little hope on any kind of fucking progress on this, or just in politics in general. Trying to pull people toward more sane, left-wing platforms is like rolling a stone up the hill. One mistake, and they run screaming back and are even further unreachable than before.

Meanwhile, someone on the right wing screams ‘LOOK AT THE BOOGEYMAN, OOGA BOOGA!’ and the world fucking loves them and flocks to them without needing to say another fucking word

It’s a symbiotic relationship. The “counter-jihad” assholes want the same thing the Islamists do — conflict — and they use the propaganda provided by the Islamists to foment hatred and divisiveness. Jim Hoft is a good example - he publishes every single bit of ISIS propaganda including beheading videos. He’s really helping ISIS get the word out.

Unfortunately, what I’ve said about our country’s collective reaction to torture is pretty much applicable here too: We are a nation of cowards who’ve been convinced that our cowardice is bravery.

The call to brand all Muslims as a monolithic enemy we must destroy lest they destroy us first is the height of reactionary paranoia and knee-jerk xenophobia. The twitch reaction to try and wipe out an entire religion and pretend the the religion, and nothing else is THE problem isn’t bravery. It’s a response reeking of pants-wetting fear, and yet we’ve been successfully sold the bill that it is the ONLY reaction we must have, and that committing to it is TRUE Real America Bravery.

Seems Fargo won best Mini Series and Billy Bob Thornton won best actor for mini series - the latter surprising as I thought Woody Harrelson or Matthew McConaughey would win that for True Detective…

Okay…who said golf wasn’t an addicting sport? My wife and I recently took it up and we’ve been out almost every weekend - and we played twice this weekend. Mostly nine hole par-3 courses - which is perfect as neither of us has a great deal of understanding of range, so starting with the short game makes sense - but we’re already improving, which makes it suck even more as we’ve begun to talk about how to sneak a round in before we go up to Tahoe to go skiing, which is why we have a fucking winter in the first place.

A pastor at the Bible Baptist Church in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey is coming under fire after his church posted a video of him claiming to have converted a “smart aleck” youth by “punching him in the chest as hard as I could.” Pastor Eric Dammann begins by saying that he met a young man in Calgary named “Ben,” who was “a nice kid, but one of those — he was a real smart aleck. He was a bright kid, which didn’t help things — made him more dangerous.” “We were outside one day at youth group,” Dammann continues, “and he was just trying to push my buttons. He was just kind of not taking the Lord serious [sic].” “So I walked over to him and went BAM! Punched him in the chest as hard as I could. I crumpled the kid. I just crumpled him.” “Then I leaned over and said, ‘Ben, when are you going to stop playing games with God?’ I led that man to the Lord right there,” he concludes.

Video of the pastor telling the story at this link.

So, I went to see The Hobbit, Part III today in IMAX 3d. Visually? It was amazing. The sfx was outstanding and thought it was beautifully shot.

But I couldn’t help but think that this was a movie that was made because Peter Jackson wanted to make a trilogy when a single film was doable (or a 2-parter). It also suffers the same problem as LOTR: RoTK - it had 15 endings.

The story suffered as a result too. It’s a shame, because had Jackson been ruthless in cutting material down the length and combined the movies, it would have been a far better journey.

I really have no respect at all for Bibi. He really seems to be eager to poison the pot. Rabin being assassinated and I’m showing my youth here is one of my earliest memories of something involving Israel and I just remember it being a sad moment. What Frank has posted about Bibi’s role in stirring up hatred against Rabin following the Oslo Accords just disgusts me about the man. I mean it’s bad enough that he constantly panders to the American wingnut crowd who really seek to use Israel as a tool without actually giving two shits about peace. The photo of his foreign or defense minister Lieberman with Pam Geller was awfully telling as was Bibi himself giving an award to Glenn Beck.

Another article came out yesterday about Prince Andrew and Virginia Roberts.

Aunt Carol said: ‘How she got seduced into Epstein’s world I don’t know. I can’t get inside Virginia’s head to know what made her vulnerable to Epstein. They were really good at what they did and they were able to accomplish what they accomplished.

‘My brother thought it was all very legitimate. When Virginia told us she’d met Prince Andrew we were thrilled. Virginia gave my Mum a copy of the picture of Andrew with his arm around her - the picture which has now been seen around the world. At the time my reaction was “Wow, how neat!” I couldn’t believe Virginia had met Prince Andrew. I was ecstatic.

So she showed the photo to her Aunt at around the same time period she was hanging out with Prince Andrew. Someday CCJ is going to have to address the fact that his photo analysis was a scam, rooted in his own dishonesty and willingness to repeat the most patently ridiculous claims as truth if they align with his personal biases.

Although the prince was quick to insist at the time that there was nothing to the photo, and that he had met Virginia only momentarily, the association with Epstein was sufficiently embarrassing that he promptly resigned as Special Trade Representative, and has struggled to define an official role for himself since, although he is still said by the Palace to be devoted to furthering Britain’s business interests.

So Prince Andrew admitted in 2011 that the photo was real, that he had met Roberts.

(Of which they didn’t have the rights to Bolero, so only a few albums at first had it. It may have returned on vinyl later. I’m not sure the status of all that on a CD.)

Really what more does he fucking want from the administration. The ambassador being there sends a message. Notice how Hollende isn’t bitching about Obama or Biden not being there. Hey, thanks for the info. I had the vinyl too, but it got all messed up back in the art school party days, and then it came up missing.

I saw The James Gang in ‘72 at Ashland (Ohio) College. Joe did the whole The Bomber song as original with Bolero…adding more echoplex time as he stood behind his amps and puffed on a ciggie.

Also, there is a vacuum of unified voices among the more “progressive” portions of our society. It’s not that they aren’t talking, but rather that there are a thousand different and at times quite disparate conversations underway concurrently.

For instance, group A might be warning about the low wage mindset of Walmart.

Group B only talks about climate change.

Group C are the “social justice” warriors, who might conference with groups A and B on occasion, but then go their merry way.

Group D are the gay rights activists - who on the whole will work with just about anyone but the reverse is not so.

And so on…

Meanwhile, all the bigots and xenophobes have to do is pull the “Jesus” card out, or the “MUSLIM!” card out, and the wingnuts rally together.

Yes, what I am saying, and this is anecdotal I admit, is that there is more coherence among the hate right, an orthodoxy if you will.

Another problem I think we’re looking at is a sort of post-modern deconstruction of the FDR Democratic Party. What FDR and TR were able to glue together is now more like a brownian motion dominated mass of flies, and small groups easily go off. E.g., the “Reagan Democrats”, those who RWR were able to peel off by wrapping himself in Americana (which btw FDR could do also.)

Just getting home from a long night, but I saw Selma tonight. The theatre I was in was all people of color (although I do believe I saw one white young man with his girlfriend, who was Black). There was a lot of elderly men and women, who seemed of the correct age to have been living under Jim Crow South. Not as many young people as I would have wanted to see (I dragged my nephew to see it). compare that to when I saw Taken, the crowd was predom white, young and middle aged, with a sprinkling of people of color, most of which were young like my nephew.

So back to the film. From the shock of the opening sequence (even knowing what was gonna happen), to the scenes on the actual Edmund Pettis bridge (god bless John Lewis) and the final scenes in Montgomery, the entire audience was riveted. Powerful doesn’t even begin to describe it. I saw it over 5 hours ago and the movie is still on my mind.

I know we’ve talked a bit about the LBJ stuff here, and I don’t know if the audience I was with even knew about the controversy, but from the overheard conversations, the last thing on anyone’s mind was the portrayal of LBJ. At the end the majority of the people just stayed in their seats and there was essentially silence until people started leaving their seats.

I don’t have time for a full fledged review, but I can say if you are a movie goers like myself or if you decide you’d only go see a film that was worth the price of admission, then RUN DON’T WALK to see Selma. it def more than a “Black” story or a “Southern” story, it’s truly an American story, and I’d like to think it def deserves as much of a diverse audience as it can get.

Good night.

Here’s CCJ’s mentor friend and advisor Dershowitz in action.

bbc.com

The lawyers later filed a lawsuit against Mr Dershowitz, claiming comments he made during media interviews amounted to defamation against them.

Speaking to Reuters news agency about his legal action, Mr Dershowitz said: “We file a sworn declaration categorically denying the charges and proving by records and other travel documents that I could not have been in the places that she says that she had sex with me.

“We file a motion to intervene in the court and then we file a defamation action against the two lawyers and the woman. And then we file disbarment proceedings against the two lawyers.”

Brings new meaning to the phrase, “rape, burn and pillage.”

I’d have to disagree with you. For example his rationale for taking up the defense of Klaus von Bulow was that the rich family hired private investigators to hand cherry-picked evidence to the prosecution. He also made the case that taking high profile cases funded his pursuit of low profile cases involving poor defendants. Admittedly this is lifted from the movie “Reversal of Fortune” but I never heard anybody say those reasons weren’t true. Just because a lawyer takes the unpopular side doesn’t make him a sleaze. John Adams famously defended the English soldiers accused in the Boston Massacre (I originally typed Boston Market!) and I think he remains well-respected.

I was referring to Dershowitz’s going after the woman and the lawyers, not his association with Epstein. It’s apparently not enough for Dershowitz to deny the allegations; he also has to destroy the reputations of Roberts and her lawyers.

293 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD  Jan 11, 2015 10:52:40pm

re: #286 wheat-dogghazi-bola-trality

Interestingly enough, some blogger at NRO went through Dershowitz’s response and found that he mischaracterized the accuser’s claims in order to debunk them. E.g. she writes about private planes, and he responds with info about Epstein’s plane. She writes about New Mexico and he writes about a particular house in NM, and so on.

294 SteveMcGaziBolaGate  Jan 11, 2015 10:53:48pm

Regarding Dershowitz’s participation in the OJ defense team, everybody deserves a defense. The prosecution MUST prove their case, even if everybody knows the bastard did it. When people just start assuming the prosecution is always right, botched cases can slip through the cracks.

Roberts is accusing him of statutory rape, which is a crime. The fact that his reputation would be hurt is a byproduct, not the aim of the lawsuit. He, on the other hand, wishes to destroy Roberts and her lawyers specifically in retaliation for those allegations. He could just file slander and/or libel charges, but in his statement to Reuters it’s clear he’s out for revenge.

Nothing wrong with defending anyone. Though IIRC he continued to defend him outside the court, in a book. That’s something else. A lawyer’s obligations do not extend that far.

I’m unfamiliar with the book but I would assume it contains the case he helped make. I don’t think that really is the same as continuing to defend OJ. He was done defending OJ.

Yeah. Very specific denials lead one to suspect there are other instances he is not denying. The counselor “doth protest too much, methinks.”

It’s not inevitable. It’s always something people make an active choice to do because they have no principles, honor or integrity.

There is no realistic ticking time bomb scenario. It’s a fantasy action adventure trope, predicated on a convoluted set of insanely unrealistic circumstances. In the real world there is no perfect knowledge of the terrorist plot in progress, and no cut scenes cluing the audience in to their guilt so that everyone can cheer and know the good guys are doing the right thing.

Shows like 24 were designed to deaden both the conscience and intelligence of the American public, to move us towards accepting a blatant betrayal of our national heritage. We’d been hit and were feeling raw and vulnerable, and the Bush Administration and their apologists use the resulting fear to justify an official policy based on sheer atavism, in spite of how counter productive and frankly damaging to our national security it actually was.

It is inevitable in the sense that (as he stated in the paper, if you read it), most law enforcement officials he has spoken to would approve the use of torture in a “ticking time bomb” scenario. That means that torture will happen, thus my use of the word inevitable. Dershowitz argues that if officials realize that they have to get a warrant, they will have to make a case that they have enough to justify that a ticking time bomb case actually exists, and that supervision will result in the moderation of torture.
You can debate the arguments about whether the use of warrants would have an inhibiting effect, but I do not think that puts him on the same team as John Yoo.

Actually evidence suggests that once in a while, torture actually worked. As he actually says in his paper (which I seem to be the only one who read the damn thing because you guys can’t quote it), “The Israeli experience suggested that information obtained as a result of torture should never be believed, unless it can be independently confirmed, but such information can sometimes be self-proving, as when the subject leads law enforcement to the actual location of the bomb.”
Dershowitz argues that requiring warrants would reduce the instances of torture, like requiring warrants reduced the number of wiretaps.

There is no fucking ticking time bomb scenario. And yes, he was attempting to provide some deodorizing cover for people like Yoo. He was saying, “here’s how we do torture right.” I’m saying there is no right way to do torture. The time bomb scenario is the thin edge of an incredibly horrible, intellectually rotten and cancerous wedge. The entire line of reasoning is both morally and logically bankrupt, it’s designed to get people to think about torture in a context where it is pre-defined as legitimate. That context however is antithetical to actual reality.

That’s what I mean by fantasy, that shit never actually happens outside of fictional settings.

You are simply wrong about that. Timothy McVeigh lit a fuse that ran about 10 minutes or so. That is a ticking time bomb. The fact that there is little chance he would have been caught and interrogated in that time doesn’t make it impossible.
The example Dershowitz makes is the Israeli Supreme court’s ban on torture, which puts security officials in an impossible dilemma. Forcing an official to do it under the table means that the torture will be worse, and may never be heard about. Requiring warrants at least makes is public, and even gives the suspect some measure of legal protection.
What we have is the utopic idea of “all torture is bad and it must never be permitted” clashing with the real-life idea that somebody is inevitably going to abuse a suspect, and what are we going to do about it?”

Excuse me, but I was busy meeting with a student. I have read the paper, since you are so keen on us doing so. I suppose one’s reaction to Dershowitz’ arguments for “torture warrants” depends on one’s acceptance of torture as a legitimate means of obtaining information. Clearly, Dershowitz has no qualms about torture being acceptable, as long as there are clear legal avenues for its use.

Moreover the rights of the suspect would be better protected with a warrant requirement. He would be granted immunity, told that he was now compelled to testify, threatened with imprisonment if he refuses to do so and given the option of providing the requested information. Only if he refused to do what he was legally compelled to do - - provide necessary information which could not incriminate him because of the immunity - - would he be threatened with torture. Knowing that such a threat was authorized by the law, he might well provide the information. If he still refused to, he would be subjected to judicially monitored physical measures designed to cause excruciating pain without leaving any lasting damage. A sterilized needle underneath the nail might be one such approved method. This may sound brutal, but it does not compare in brutality with the prospect of thousands of preventable deaths at the hands of fellow terrorists.

There are many hypotheticals in just this one extract, enough to make the entire argument pretty weak.

1. We have someone in custody who may have information about a terroristic act.
2. He refuses to cooperate.
3. There are no other possible sources of information.
4. We get a “torture warrant.”
5. He still refuses.
6. We stick needles under his fingernails.
7. He sings like a canary.
8. Problem solved!

He refers to Israeli cases in which some useful information was obtained by mild torture techniques. Then the Israeli courts declared such techniques illegal. Yet, in the same paper, using the aforesaid hypotheticals, he says basically that the Israeli Supreme Court was wrong in its decision, because torture sometimes is justified.

I don’t find his argument convincing in the least. I also find his suggestion that torture should be legally condoned abhorrent.

I, for one, never argued that torture never works or that there aren’t scenarios where torture isn’t the least evil. I would point out that even in such cases it remains a crime and should be prosecuted, and in no case should it be legalized.

But since we’re dealing with hypotheticals, here’s one I would offer to Dersh and his ilk: let there be warrants as you wish, but any such warrant will be accompanied by sort of a contract: the torturer willingly goes to prison for the minimum of 5 years (or more, depending), without a trial (to exclude any “necessity” defenses) or any possibility of parole or pardon. This guarantees that torture is not psychologically normalized or that people are not tortured “just because”. If the case is so grave that one allegedly must torture, it is also so grave that the same person must be willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of the greater good.

324 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD  Jan 12, 2015 1:49:15am

Any argument based on “it will be done anyway, so let’s do it legally without regard to whether it’s evil or not” is BS. Apply that to rape. “Well, people will rape anyway, so let’s make the process controlled. The victims will be chosen through a lottery, there won’t be physical violence or risk of STDs”, and so on and so forth. That’s basically Dershowitzian thinking.

If the person is innocent, or doesn’t have the information you think they do, how exactly would you know when to stop? Similarly, if they lie, how would you know, they can easily send you on a wild goose chase and waste precious resources, and will say anything to make the torture stop.

The exigent circumstances argument is simply crap with regards to this. People rarely say what valuable information was gained in the few circumstances they assert it’s worked, and the amount of bad information gained and assimilated is similarly never discussed by the proponents of torture. Reportedly the only actionable information the US was able to get via torture under Bush had already been told in normal non-torture interrogation sessions. And predictably the the torture program’s cheerleaders lied their asses off about the actual origin of these results:

Those responsible for the program have tried to portray this as a CIA-versus-FBI matter, or as a debate between those who will do whatever it takes to defend the homeland versus those with softer hearts. The reality is that these techniques endangered our homeland. They didn’t work. We lost valuable time - years of time. Intelligence that could have been gained wasn’t. And plots that could have been stopped weren’t.

There was no actionable intelligence gained from using enhanced interrogation techniques on Abu Zubaydah that wasn’t, or couldn’t have been, gained from regular tactics. In addition, I saw that using these alternative methods on other terrorists backfired on more than a few occasions — all of which are still classified. The short sightedness behind the use of these techniques ignored the unreliability of the methods, the nature of the threat, the mentality and modus operandi of the terrorists, and due process.

Defenders of these techniques have claimed that they got Abu Zubaydah to give up information leading to the capture of Ramzi bin al-Shibh, a top aide to Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, and Mr. Padilla. This is false. The information that led to Mr. Shibh’s capture came primarily from a different terrorist operative who was interviewed using traditional methods. As for Mr. Padilla, the dates just don’t add up: the harsh techniques were approved in the memo of August 2002, Mr. Padilla had been arrested that May.

-FBI Supervisory Special Agent and Interrogator in 2009.

Last month Soufan wrote this:

One of the hardest things we struggled to make sense of, back then, was why US officials were authorizing harsh techniques when our interrogations were working and their harsh techniques weren’t. The answer, as the long-awaited Senate Intelligence Committee report now makes clear, is that the architects of the program were taking credit for our success, from the unmasking of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed as the mastermind of 9/11 to the uncovering of the “dirty bomber” Jose Padilla. The claims made by government officials for years about the efficacy of “enhanced interrogation”, in secret memos and in public, are false. “Enhanced interrogation” doesn’t work.

It’s maddening enough to learn that while we were working around the clock and often under dangerous circumstances, from Yemen to Afghanistan, the “enhanced” interrogators took the weeks off from interrogating the only high-value detainee in American custody. And the entire Senate report makes for painful reading. But not just because of the new details on the futility of those techniques and the orchestrated campaign of deception and lies told about their efficiency. The hardest part about the report is what it doesn’t answer: How do we prevent this from happening again?

What amuses me most about their continued defense of what they did is that they’re still wrong. Within minutes of the report’s release, the Wall Street Journal published an op-ed by three former CIA directors, and they still called Abu Zubaydah a senior al-Qaida operative. This error is, in many ways, a microcosm for everything that went wrong. When the agency’s contractors arrived at that black site, they said that as Abu Zubaydah was giving us information, he wasn’t fully cooperating because he wasn’t admitting to being the number three in al-Qaida.

We knew Abu Zubaydah’s background well: We had been investigating terrorist attacks in which he was involved in Jordan and terrorists who had come through his training camp. The reality is that Abu Zubaydah was an independent operator with close ties to al-Qaida, but he was never a member. He had actually tried to join earlier on in his career, but al-Qaida deemed him unstable; later, when they wanted him to join, Abu Zubaydah refused.

We pointed this out at the time, but the “enhanced” interrogators refused to listen. A few years ago, very quietly, the US government changed its claims about Abu Zubaydah, reflecting the reality that he was never a member.

And the thing of it is, our own aging interrogators from WWII who’d been in charge of questioning high level Nazi prisoners understood all this and tried to tell us what we were doing in the WoT was both wrong and inherently ineffective.

Blunt criticism of modern enemy interrogations was a common refrain at the ceremonies held beside the Potomac River near Alexandria. Across the river, President Bush defended his administration’s methods of detaining and questioning terrorism suspects during an Oval Office appearance.

Several of the veterans, all men in their 80s and 90s, denounced the controversial techniques. And when the time came for them to accept honors from the Army’s Freedom Team Salute, one veteran refused, citing his opposition to the war in Iraq and procedures that have been used at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

“I feel like the military is using us to say, ‘We did spooky stuff then, so it’s okay to do it now,’ ” said Arno Mayer, 81, a professor of European history at Princeton University.

And one more thing…I see Decatur Deb posted up a nice version of a great classic song by Bonnie Dobson…Walk me out in the Morning Dew.

There was a semi-successful band out of Cleveland Ohio, Damnation of Adam Blessing, who did a great version of the song. Tons of version have been done by rockers, but to me Damnation does one of the best for a rock band. Of course Adam Blessing (Ken Constable) has a great somewhat gospel somewhat bluesy voice to really carry it off. In my opinion anyway, see what you think.

Got and stayed above freezing point in Philadelphia overnight, so here it’s just drizzle and very dreary outside. Misty right now with very low visibility.

Co-workers reported some slick spots on the back roads, but otherwise not that bad of a commute.

Looks like a nice day to snuggle up with a warm cup of tea, a book, and some cats. But not to be.

Angle is everything. Want to make a small protest look huge? Take a low angle shot. Want to make a big protest seem small, take a high angle wide shot with limited points of reference.

Speaking of angle, Steve Emerson, who claims to be an Islam expert was on Fox News spouting off bogus statistics about Muslims in the UK. He was busy claiming that Birmingham and other cities are majority Muslim and that non-Muslims can’t go there (no-go zones).

It was patently BS, and he had to walk back those claims, but not before he got them out there.

Islamophobia is real, and they’re spreading their noxious nonsense all over the media.

As a reminder, this is the true demographic picture in Europe, and far from being a majority anywhere, there’s a range from insignificant minority to a substantial minority.

In Birmingham, Muslims make up 22% of the population, which is hardly a majority (unless you’re playing RWNJ math).

re: #322 wheat-dogghazi-bola-trality

Excuse me, but I was busy meeting with a student. I have read the paper, since you are so keen on us doing so. I suppose one’s reaction to Dershowitz’ arguments for “torture warrants” depends on one’s acceptance of torture as a legitimate means of obtaining information. Clearly, Dershowitz has no qualms about torture being acceptable, as long as there are clear legal avenues for its use.

If that’s what you think his points are than you managed to look at the paper without reading it. You also have a knack for mischaracterizing my arguments. I guess that’s what you get when you have a pre-conceived notion, not about torture, but about Alan Dershowitz.

(My spell-checker doesn’t like pre-conceived, so when I right-clicked it one of the acceptable options was “pee-conceived.)

Sorry if I’m late to the party on this, but even after November’s election losses we are still, STILL, stuck with a dozen or so terrible Dems in the House. Here are the awful Dems who voted for the R’s changing the definition of full time work bill last week: (via Down With Tyranny):

Brad Ashford (Blue Dog-NE)
• Ami Bera (New Dem-CA)
• Jim Costa (Blue Dog-CA)
• Henry Cuellar (Blue Dog-TX)
• John Delaney (New Dem-MD)
• Gwen Graham (Blue Dog-FL)
• Dan Lipinski (Blue Dog-IL)
• Patrick Murphy (New Dem-FL)
• Scott Peters (New Dem-CA)
• Colin Peterson (Blue Dog-MN)
• Kurt Schrader (Blue Dog-OR)
• Kyrsten Sinema (Blue Dog-AZ)

No doubt some of these Dems might say “Well, these workers can just get healthcare on the exchanges…”

Sure, the same exchanges R’s are fighting all the way to the SCOTUS to not subsidize.

downwithtyranny.blogspot.com

Didn’t realize Sinema had joined the Blue Doggies and was being this terrible.

And here’s the newest Blue Doggie in the House from Oregon (Shrader):

by Schrader’s count, the 14 Blue Dogs can be bolstered by the 40-member New Democrat caucus. The group, says Schrader, is “a balance to the Elizabeth Warrens of the world,” referring to the Massachusetts senator who’s become the idol of the other end of the party. In the House, it’s “a way to show we’re not all like Nancy (Pelosi, the minority leader).”

downwithtyranny.blogspot.com

JFC. Numbnuts. Republicans control the House by largest margin since Truman and blue doggie Schrader wants to “balance” Pelosi.

When does this sht ever end?

Whatever. I read the paper. I stand by my remarks. I was characterizing his arguments, not yours.

Further, I’m not going to focus on Dershowitz’ comments about torture, because I was not the one who raised that particular issue. My original mention of Dershowitz regarded his going after V. Roberts and her lawyers tooth and nail, which I find too aggressive to be ethical. Your mileage may vary.

Why are you so defensive about Dershowitz, anyway?

Also enjoyed Judy Collins, Carolyn Hester, Chad Mitchell Trio, and the Limelighters. It seems “the young folks” (Mumfords et al) have revived and transformed folk music and I think that’s a good thing. I always thought there was potential for folk music market today.

Wingnuts are gonna blow a gasket when they find about this:

Chancellor Angela Merkel and most of her cabinet will join a rally for an “open and tolerant Germany” called by Muslim leaders Tuesday in Berlin after the jihadist attacks in France, a spokesman said.

Merkel will take part in the event at the Brandenburg Gate in the heart of the capital, along with Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and other top officials, government spokesman Georg Streiter told reporters Monday.

Merkel joined French President Francois Hollande and several other world leaders at a huge Paris solidarity rally Sunday in the wake of the massacre of 17 people by Islamist gunmen in the city last week.

There are several assumptions behind the belief in torture that are unexamined. First, that the person would not rather die than tell you about the bomb. That that the person you catch actually knows where the bomb is or how to defuse it. That they would not reason that simply holding out long enough makes the detonation inevitable. That the information is current and correct, and no one has moved or changed the bomb to another place or detonation to another time later than the time of your captive’s capture, to confuse the holders.

And because of the possibility that someone may be arrested, some groups compartmentalize. A plot may be carried out by different people with different roles, none of whom knows the whole plan or story. Some people outside may be tricked in to helping. Only a few people may know the all the details

422 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD  Jan 12, 2015 8:00:46am

1. I acknowledge the bare possibility of a ticking bomb scenario.
2. Its happening probability is very low and the probability that torture will help is low.
3. Legalizing torture would open door to abuse. (Let’s omit all the moral factors.)
4. So what Dershowitz proposes is unlikely to help but is likely to be abused.

Very smart, yeah.

re: #430 CarolJ

Good point.

And by the way, folks need to remember that the President of the United States travels with a veritable army of handlers and security-enough to overwhelm smaller security groups.

I also can’t help but think some would have been concerned that having Obama there would have egged on some groups to try something spectacular to either get at him or disrupt the event by creating mayhem. Fewer people would want to get at the Prime Minister of say, Albania or Belgium. It’s the same reason they attacked the Trade Towers instead of some Berlin skyscraper-more attention and a bigger target.

If the President had attended, it would have flipped the RWNJs instantly to the anti-Charlie mode. They would have dragged out every obnoxious cartoon the mag had ever produced as an example of Obama’s ‘endorsement’.

When every course of action guarantees fauxtrage, the leader is given a perverse freedom. “They’ll howl the same no matter what we do—fuck’em.”

So if that’s true maybe Jennifer should direct her anger at her party that cares more about pointless investigations of Benghazi and repeals of ACA that they know POTUS will never sign rather than being angry at a president who has actually presented a plan for jobs rather than just recycled Reaganomics bullshit. re: #456 William Barnett-Lewis
None of the people who are crying about unemployed people not being counted seems to notice that we are in the timeframe where lots of Baby Boomers and Generation Jonesers are retiring or going down to part-time work. If you are say 63 with a pension, and your job is on the bubble, it may, depending upon what you can get from Social Security/Pension combined, be easier to simply retire or go to half-time rather than hold on for dear life. That’s also what happened during the Great Recession: many people decided to take retirement/had to take retirement in order to have something to live on. So these people are out of the workforce entirely or only in partly. These people are now off of unemployment, so they aren’t being counted anymore.

1956 is the peak of the Baby Boom in terms of births. I was born that year. In four years (age 62), depending upon economic conditions and what’s available, many may choose to retire early. In seven years or so, the wave of retirements will drop considerably. When that happens, a lot of positions will start opening up as the smaller Generation Xers and last remaining Jonesers move up to middle or senior management and leave those positions open for younger workers.

What will real unemployment numbers look like then?

Judy Henske & Jerry Yester - Rapture

Amazingly good poetics:

Rapture (Henske/Yester)

Divers asleep
Dream of the deep
Closing over their heads
Lost comrades gather by their beds
“Her voice in the drowned bells
was tolling
In rapture we died
Waves o’er us rolling”

Pilots beware
the perilous air
Streaming under your wings
Her voice in the hot sun is calling
In rapture you die
Flying and falling

Lovers who lie
beneath the night sky
neither speak nor hear
in the perfect stillness
She is near
Her voice in the heart’s blood comes roaring
In rapture they die
Diving and soaring

Just FYI, below are some statistics to keep in mind amid the fear mongering, courtesy of the 2014 Global Terrorism Index (emphasis mine).

EU-specific stats can be found at the Europol website which, like the Global Terrorism Index, also provides its full TE-SAT 2014 report (PDF):

Key Facts:

• 17,958 people were killed in terrorist attacks last year, that’s 61% more than the previous year.
82% of all deaths from terrorist attack occur in just 5 countries: Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria and Syria.
• Last year terrorism was dominated by four groups: the Taliban, Boko Haram, ISIL, and al Qa’ida.
More than 90% of all terrorist attacks occur in countries that have gross human rights violations.
40 times more people are killed by homicides than terrorist attacks.

Delancey Place Excerpt for today:

inflation and the ku klux klan — 1/12/15

Today’s selection - from The Deluge by Adam Tooze. In 1919, devastating inflation that resulted from the disruption of World War I led to massive labor strikes across the U.S. This in turn led to a “Red Scare,” a fear of the spread of communism to America. But the communist threat never genuinely materialized. Instead, this inflation, and the sharp deflation that followed, led to a resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan, which grew from a few thousand in 1919 to as many as 4 million by 1924:

I think the conclusion that could be drawn is that wealth inequality leads to hate crimes as people look for a scapegoat and opportunists look for a cause.
