John Boehner’s Bartender Thought Boehner Was the Devil and Planned to Poison Him

At first I thought this was from one of those fake news sites, but no — it appears to be legitimate; John Boehner’s long-time bartender at a West Chester country club planned to poison him.

Michael Robert HoytMichael Robert Hoyt, 44, was indicted Jan. 7 on charges of threatening to murder the congressman in a plot authorities said included poisoning his drink at a country club.

Hoyt served drinks to Boehner for more than five years at the Wetherington Country Club in West Chester and was known as “Bartender Mike” to employees there.

Hoyt called police on Oct. 29, a week after being fired from the club, and blamed Boehner for his woes, police said. When officers visited Hoyt at his home on Matson Ave. in Deer Park, they said the plot thickened.

“Hoyt told the officer he was Jesus Christ and he was going to kill Boehner because Boehner was mean to him at the country club and because Boehner is responsible for Ebola,” United States Capitol Police (USCP) Special Agent Christopher M. Desrosiers said. “Hoyt advised he had a loaded Beretta .380 automatic and he was going to shoot Boehner and take off.”

Definitely goes without saying on both counts. Glad it was stopped before it could happen. One would hope that this would perhaps make Boehner more aware about the importance of mental health screening and guns.

Back in warmer times, Charles and several other lizards had a terrible time with those tiny sugar ants invading our kitchens and bathrooms as they sought out water. And there were so many suggested remedies offered, mostly involving borax and ant baits (very bad for feline overlords).
Well, it’s mid-January and, as some of you know, my hot water pipe in the bathroom froze up over the weekend; so imagine my surprise to see dozens of those pesky little buggers swarming in my bathroom sink last night.
In a bit of serendipity, I grabbed MrBWS’s plastic jug of Gold Bond Body Powder and just started sprinkling it everywhere and poured a barrier where the wee ants were entering.
The ants started staggering and collapsing immediately.
Today there were three confused stragglers trying to find a way out.
I’m thinking it was the menthol in the Gold Bond.
Anyway, just wanted to share what is apparently The Best Ant Repellant Ever!

Just came across the following passage while reading Cary Elwes’ entertaining book “As You Wish; Inconceivable Tales From The Making of The Princess Bride.” Pardon the length, but I gotta share this story.

Really, I was amazed at how immediate the effect was.
I always used the homemade borax/sugar mix and that can take several days.
The Gold Bond was working right before my eyes.

When I lived in Illinois, I had to apply to (and be approved by) the Illinois State Police for an FOID (Firearms Owner ID, not a conceal carry, just to own a firearm). It was good for 10 years.
Illinois now has (as of 2013) an mental health provision.

Kentucky doesn’t have any requirements for gun ownership, just carry laws.

One can be barred from purchasing or owning guns if one has serious mental health issues, but those provisions can’t be engaged until doctors have actually examined someone.

That said, such provisions should have been triggered (poor word for it, given the context, I know) by his prior psychotic episode.

A change in state laws I do think needed is that if someone is diagnosed as having had such a psychotic episode, the police in that person’s municipality need to be alerted and should be charged with ensuring any guns that person owns are either stored with the police or transferred to non-prohibited persons. For the latter purpose, the police should be allowed to conduct the NICS background check themselves (for a small fee) in order to speed things along.

I certainly don’t think it is an Indonesian flag, nor that of Singapore or Monaco (all of which have the red on top, opposite of the Polish version), but I am stumped as to what it is meant to be. After posting the comment, I realized that it might be construed to be making fun of mental illness. That was NOT my intent. I’ve struggled my entire life with severe depression and fully understand the toll it takes. I also understand the stigma of mental disorder, which make me reluctant to seek treatment for most of my life. Thanks to the wonderful support of family and friends and treatment, I’m currently doing well.

I’ve also reached the point where I’m willing to discuss such personal information because I now feel that my illness is nothing to be ashamed of and also to let others who are struggling with the same issues know that people understand and can help.

If I had one, I’d probably do the same. I’ve still got a first gen iPod Shuffle in a drawer, but its battery has gone flaky, so it’s only useable for a few hours at best.

I remember winning a 30GB one at my high school grad party in 2005. Ended up finishing with a 160GB one. It really is amazing. I wrote a paper about the evolution of digital music players. It’s truly fascinating. I think Neil’s intentions are good but I think digital music is fine and honestly a great thing. It makes music more accessible to everyone.

What’s funny: I’m in ‘the biz’ where one may expect I have all the gadgets, a huge library of high quality music, and massive sound system.

I use Sonos, Spotify, and listen to AM radio in the car. I sorta feel guilty that they don’t pay enough to musicians, but the convenience is just too much of a pull for me.

It’s true. The 44.1Khz sampling rate produces high frequencies of 22,050Hz, which is above most people’s hearing range.

Having been an audiophile for a very long time, be warned that you’ve just opened a can of worms ;)

However, I’ve heard Neil discuss digital and he simply doesn’t have a clue how it works. Neil talked about how digital chopped up the sound, obviously not understanding that the final output is an analog signal which matches the original signal. He thinks (as do some audiophiles) that a higher sampling rate will result in a higher definition sound for consumer audio.

Bottom line as an engineer: a properly done digital to analog conversion using the CD standard provides a wide dynamic range with a frequency range better than most speakers can provide or people can hear. When you need very expensive speakers/headphones to actually hear any difference, is the difference in sound quality worth the cost?

After all, mp3 format actually reduces the signal quality but hasn’t suffered that I can tell ;)

After a four year battle, I may have defeated the flour moths, but my ants remain. I’ve made peace with it. They arrive in June and leave late August - it’s just part of summer. There’s always a few ants scouting out the scene, but they leave my stored food alone, and just arrive in mass if there’s a tempting item left out (they love lettuce and BBQ chicken.)

With all 33 precincts reporting, Morrissey had 42.26 percent of the tally, to Sullivan’s 33.37 percent, according to the Virginia Department of Elections. Walton trailed with 24.13 percent of the vote.

This is certainly my feeling.

While there are definite issues with Pono, I wonder if part of the extreme hard feelings it is generating relates to the ongoing war to firmly establish the “streaming model” as dominant. Personally, I like to listen to some things that are not currently available from Spotify et al (due to artist preference or just their obscurity) and I also like to feel free to listen to my music when I am “off the grid”. The demise of the only Apple player large enough to hold my MP3 collection is a worrying development to me.

Yup. mp3 is a lossy algorithm. I as an ex-audiophile, I still have some nice toys to listen to and there is a difference. My point was simply that with most speakers/headphones, the majority of folks don’t notice the difference.

The science behind analog to digital conversion is well established, and the CD standard, when properly used, will provide a wider frequency range than almost anyone can hear. And the output signal will match the input signal exactly within the specified ranges in the standard.

Higher sampling rates can capture higher frequencies, but is that an advantage? Truth be told, when you start talking about frequencies above 16kHz, studies have shown that unless you’re a young girl you aren’t going to hear them (CD provides up to 20kHz). Back in my serious audiophile days my ex was an audiologist. So of course I used her equipment to try, no joy. Still bought better audio stuff though. Ah, happy days. (I seem to recall that gender differences were a function of exposure to high sound pressure levels).

Could some listeners, using very high quality playback equipment hear a difference between the new standard being pitched by Neil and the CD standard? Yes. But over time, exposure to high pressure levels takes it’s toll on all of us, and most of us can’t hear it.

My dad’s best friend tested equipment and wrote for Audio magazine. This was well before the digital music revolution. His testing booth in his home was soundproofed, so ambient noise couldn’t affect his listening. He had high-end speakers and headphones, and with them he could hear the difference between direct-to-disc (vinyl, yo) and the usual tape-to-disc process. But, he said, you had to listen intently in a very quiet room to hear the difference.

The vast majority of music listeners do not listen to their tunes in soundproofed rooms, so the Pono’s supposedly superior audio quality will be lost to them. It’s a gimmick, and old Neil should stick to making music, not shilling for equipment manufacturers.

Very smart. My ex (the audiologist) always bet musicians that she could guess their instrument by testing their hearing. Don’t recall she ever lost the bet. I seem to recall that drummers were the easiest to guess.

Slayer sucked when I was young, by the way.

They weren’t good until they released Reign In Blood, which is an amazing metal album. For all the speed and metal chops those guys have, they are an admittedly one-trick pony. And one of their principal guitarists/songwriters died a couple of years ago of cirrhosis of the liver.

As far as Bonnaroo is concerned, they did host Alice Cooper a few years back and webcast the show. I thought that was fun.

I was lucky enough to see Crazy Horse at Madison Square Garden on the tour that coincided with the Landing On Water album (for some reason, Neil released the album then decided to take CH out on tour instead of the band that recorded the album), and I got to talk to his then-wife Pegi for a while.

She told a story about how they were flying to vacation, and when they boarded the plane, Neil took the safety instruction sheet out of the seat back and sat staring at it for most of the flight. When they returned from vacation, Neil called the airline and bought the rights to the safety artwork for 50 bucks.

It became the cover art for the Landing On Water album.

When I was a kid visiting my dad’s TV repair shop, I told him I could hear the whine of the flyback transformers in a TV set (they operate at close to 20 kHz, IIRC). He couldn’t.

In my 40s, I could hear up to 17 kHz, but my physics students could hear higher freqs. Now, I think I’d be lucky to hear above 14 kHz. I checked one time using an audio generator for Windows. No joy.

The CD-quality standard—which Young and HRA proponents say isn’t sufficient—wasn’t adopted randomly. It’s not a number plucked out of thin air. It’s based on sampling theory and the actual limits of human hearing. To the human ear, audio sampled above 44.1 kHz/16-bit is inaudibly different.

Having been an audiophile for a very long time, be warned that you’ve just opened a can of worms ;)

However, I’ve heard Neil discuss digital and he simply doesn’t have a clue how it works. Neil talked about how digital chopped up the sound, obviously not understanding that the final output is an analog signal which matches the original signal. He thinks (as do some audiophiles) that a higher sampling rate will result in a higher definition sound for consumer audio.

Bottom line as an engineer: a properly done digital to analog conversion using the CD standard provides a wide dynamic range with a frequency range better than most speakers can provide or people can hear. When you need very expensive speakers/headphones to actually hear any difference, is the difference in sound quality worth the cost?

After all, mp3 format actually reduces the signal quality but hasn’t suffered that I can tell ;)

It’s the warmth of vinyl v. the cold digital way of thinking.

Perhaps a holdover from when CDs were first released, and the record companies didn’t want (the expense) to remaster the LP recordings, but directly transfer them onto CDs.

I once asked an studio engineer why he was re-mixing the LP album sound mix onto a two track, (seemed like a lot of high end) and why it didn’t sound (to my ear) as good as the original mix did.

His response, “it will after mastering onto a LP.”

Well, it was two whole weeks ago when I invited dragged some of the lizards into my nightmare. I have to say I appreciate the concern you guys expressed, even though I figured at the time it was wasted on the wrong person.
In that time despair has been sharing head space with some hope. It turns out a made the grades I needed (somehow) and was able to get the loans I needed to get through this last semester. This nursing school thing might actually come true! As each semester drew to a close, I wore down and melted down worse each time, in the belief that things were going to go kablooie in my face. But I fought with everything I had to make the grades. It was in the interim that I would run out of fight. But when I get through this semester, I graduate. For the first time, I allowed myself to imagine finishing my final final. That one will be with night school students, none of whom will have any idea what I went through.
But the dean will. I saw her last week to check if I made the grades and she showed me I did, and then told me she needed a medical clearance again. I tried to act surprised but she said she could see the belt buckle on my neck. I was busted. All I could do was correct her and say it was a luggage strap.
So I say thank you to the Lizard Kingdom for your concern and that while the worst is behind me, I’m not taking anything for granted and will keep seeing the doctor.

Absolutely continue treatment. And think about the difference between situational and clinical depression. Stress, emotional losses, etc. can cause situational depression; it’s a result of the situation. Clinical depression is an acute, chronic condition that persists despite the situation. And it is insidious, as you know from experience.

My point is that when you combine an untreated clinical depression with situational depression, the results aren’t nice. Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional so treat accordingly ;) Let’s just say, been there…

Something to think about before the medical clearance. Because the situational aspects causing depressing will go away with a little time, and you are being treated for the clinical aspects. And as the persistent condition improves, the ability to deal with situational stress will improve as well; the combination will be less toxic. And with time I think you’ll be fine.

Positive thoughts your way.

I remember the first time I heard a CD in 1984 while stationed in Germany. The Pretenders first album - clear, clean, no hisses or noise not meant to be there. I loved it. It took a few years before I could afford a cd player but once I but I didn’t look back. I have no nostalgia or need for vinyl.

More than 700 spills were reported at oil and gas operations in Colorado last year, according to the latest data compiled from a state database by the Center for Western Priorities.

The spills that occurred on an average of two per day released more than a million gallons of oil and other chemicals, mainly in Weld County and in the Piceance Basin of Western Colorado.

The spills were most often caused by equipment failure or human error, the data showed. They occurred when tanker trucks tipped over, containment ponds leaked or overflowed or pipes were corroded. Some of the spills had happened years earlier but were not discovered until 2014.

When their ballast starts going bad, some fluorescent fixtures get whiney, for much the same reason as a flyback transformer. They operate at high frequency AC.

As for me, I can handle the whine, but the flicker of a failing tube gives me a headache.

The so-called “warmth” of a vinyl recording I suspect is purely subjective. Mass produced LPs were not made to the highest audio quality standards, especially the discs pressed near the end of the useful life of the master. Perhaps a carefully mastered direct-to-disc LP that was clean as a whistle and played on high-end equipment would sound better than a mass-produced CD, but really, few people are going spend the money for such an audio experience.

The Christie speech seemingly ticked off more locations outside New Jersey than those located inside.

As I traveled the country over the last year, this anxiety was the most palpable emotion I saw and felt.

I saw it on the streets of Chicago and felt it in the suburbs of Maryland.

I heard it from farmers in Kansas and from teachers in Colorado.

I felt it from veterans in Maine and from workers in Arkansas.

But the wisest words came from an 82 year old woman in Florida.

She grabbed my hand and asked me a simple, but powerful question: “What’s happened to our country? We used to control events. Now events control us.”

Quoting a woman from Florida who seems to ignore that events controlled the US (Cuban Missile Crisis anyone??? OPEC oil crisis of 1970s?! Recessions? Depression?) But ticking off all those states is his way of saying he’s running for President. And most New Jerseyeans would be happy to see him spend more time out of the state.

Crowing about having balanced budgets for x years in a row doesn’t mean anything when state law requires a balanced budget; what Christie did was cobble together budgets that had unreasonable revenue projections and when shortfalls occurred he went back on promise to pay in to the pension funds and limited the state contribution (which to be fair, was the largest contributions the state had made in years b/c governors on both sides of the aisle had raided the pensions to balance budgets to avoid raising taxes/fees or cutting spending elsewhere).

Also unmentioned was fact that on his watch, South Jersey’s economy imploded particularly the result of 4 of 12 casinos in Atlantic City closed up, and a 5th is on the verge of doing so. Yet, he and other NJ politicians think a casino in Northern NJ will be a salvation.

It wont, though sports betting might have a better chance (though federal and state law works against that too).

He’s got name recognition, but it’s not very good recognition. When most people know you as the governor who likes to act like an asshole and yell at those that displease him, including teachers, then you’re already working with a deficit. He’s got very few positives to run on, and most of the crazies in the GOP pack can beat him in the negatives.

I think we’ll go down the same path we always do though. The GOP will end up nominating an establishment type who will run away from some of his past reasonable stances i.e. Romney on health care and McCain on taxes and they’ll still be mistrusted by the base so they’ll be forced to choose a nutcase like Palin or Paul to be the running mate to appease the base. At this point, I think the Dems go with Hillary. No idea who she makes her running mate but if she’s smart, she should go with a minority or someone form out west rather than a Hillary loyalist.

Whether it was the Adams family to start our nation’s history, the Roosevelts, Nixon (who was on the ballot as VP or President and/or in the WH pretty much from 1952 through 1974, or Bush (I exclude Clinton until Hillary wins a nomination), there are some names that repeatedly come up. If Hillary runs and wins the nomination, that would add to the list of elections with political dynasties running for the WH.

The only ones worrying about going to hell in a handbasket are the energy companies who are suddenly watching their fracking plays and coal energy industries going up in a cloud of soot as oil prices drop to levels not seen in years, and for the coal industry dying a needed death especially as alt energy makes inroads and efficiencies reduce need for new power generating facilities to maintain the same energy production. Fracking has also opened up natural gas and meant lower prices there as well. But since oil prices are dropping, fracking new areas is going to go get put on hold because the economics of new wells doesn’t work out - especially in areas that don’t have infrastructure (pipelines, wells, etc.).

There’s a good book I read, Verdict On Vichy, about the period of the collaborationist Vichy Regime, that goes into the subject of French anti-Semitism and its long and ugly history; it helps the reader understand that the Vichy Regime’s actions against French Jews weren’t just some spontaneous 20th Century outburst of anti-Semitism, but that such toxic ideas had long been simmering under the surface.

The indication here is that they haven’t actually studied the black boxes, the latter of which (the data voice recorder) was just recovered (as of 01/13/2015). So they don’t know what was actually stated yet.

Divers in the Java Sea have retrieved the cockpit voice recorder from the crashed AirAsia flight QZ8501, say officials.

The retrieval comes a day after the first piece of the so-called black box, the flight data recorder, was also found and brought to shore.

The aircraft with 162 people on board disappeared between Surabaya in Indonesia and Singapore on 28 December.

The two devices will help investigators understand more about what went wrong.

Forty-eight bodies have been recovered so far, but most of the victims are believed to still be inside the fuselage.

SB Supriadi from Indonesia’s search and rescue agency told the BBC’s Indonesian service the fuselage had been located by divers about 1.5km (0.9 miles) from where the tail section was found last week.

Meanwhile, he’s citing to another Indonesian outlet claiming the same official stated the last words were Allahu Ackbar, but that outlet refers to a Daily Mail (the british rag) as their source. There’s no further source.

Digging deeper still, and it’s clear that Nurcahyo Utomo, the investigator, is indicating that often the last words are essentially to the effect of OH G-D! which in Islam is similar to Allahu Ackbar! (G-d is Greatest!) In other words, not necessarily terrorism, but rather the stark realization that they’re all about to die from events potentially beyond the pilots’ control.

Terrorism hasn’t been ruled out here to be sure - mainly because the debris hasn’t fully been recovered, let alone the black boxes. Having that information will help piece together the plane’s last minutes and what was going on board the plane at the time they were denied a routing/altitude change from flight controllers.

The video below is from a camera mounted in the Sheriff’s vehicle. The video is amazing because of the amount and duration of restraint the Sheriff had, especially in light of the recent numerous shootings by trigger-happy LEOs. The Sheriff drew his pistol and gave the suspect countless warnings for nearly 90 seconds. Of course, this was an interaction between a White cop and White suspect……I could only imagine if the suspect was Black how quickly he would have been executed on location.
