Global temperature time series: land and ocean components. From 2014 Global Report Supplemental Information.

We have big news on the climate change front today from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and it’s not bad — it’s terrible: 2014 Earth’s warmest year on record; December 2014 record warm; Global oceans also record warm for 2014.

Global highlights: Calendar Year 2014

For extended analysis of global climate patterns, please see our full Annual report.

  • During 2014, the average temperature across global land and ocean surfaces was 1.24°F (0.69°C) above the 20th century average. This was the highest among all 135 years in the 1880-2014 record, surpassing the previous records of 2005 and 2010 by 0.07°F (0.04°C).
  • Record warmth was spread around the world, including Far East Russia into western Alaska, the western United States, parts of interior South America, most of Europe stretching into northern Africa, parts of eastern and western coastal Australia, much of the northeastern Pacific around the Gulf of Alaska, the central to western equatorial Pacific, large swaths of northwestern and southeastern Atlantic, most of the Norwegian Sea, and parts of the central to southern Indian Ocean.
  • During 2014, the globally-averaged land surface temperature was 1.80°F (1.00°C) above the 20th century average. This was the fourth highest among all years in the 1880-2014 record.
  • During 2014, the globally-averaged sea surface temperature was 1.03°F (0.57°C) above the 20th century average. This was the highest among all years in the 1880-2014 record, surpassing the previous records of 1998 and 2003 by 0.09°F (0.05°C).
  • Looking above Earth's surface at certain layers of the atmosphere, two different analyses examined NOAA satellite-based data records for the lower and middle troposphere and the lower stratosphere.
  • The 2014 temperature for the lower troposphere (roughly the lowest five miles of the atmosphere) was third highest in the 1979-2014 record, at 0.50°F (0.28°C) above the 1981-2010 average, as analyzed by the University of Alabama Huntsville (UAH), and sixth highest on record, at 0.29°F (0.16°C) above the 1981-2010 average, as analyzed by Remote Sensing Systems (RSS).
  • The 2014 temperature for the mid-troposphere (roughly two miles to six miles above the surface) was third highest in the 1979-2014 record, at 0.32°F (0.18°C) above the 1981-2010 average, as analyzed by UAH, and sixth highest on record, at 0.25°F (0.14°C) above the 1981-2010 average, as analyzed by RSS.
  • The temperature for the lower stratosphere (roughly 10 miles to 13 miles above the surface) was 13th lowest in the 1979-2014 record, at 0.56°F (0.31°C) below the 1981-2010 average, as analyzed by UAH, and also 13th lowest on record, at 0.41°F (0.23°C) below the 1981-2010 average, as analyzed by RSS. The stratospheric temperature is decreasing on average while the lower and middle troposphere temperatures are increasing on average, consistent with expectations in a greenhouse-warmed world.
  • According to data from NOAA analyzed by the Rutgers Global Snow Lab, the average annual Northern Hemisphere snow cover extent during 2014 was 24.95 million square miles, and near the middle of the historical record. The first half of 2014 saw generally below-normal snow cover extent, with above-average coverage later in the year.
  • Recent polar sea ice extent trends continued in 2014. The average annual sea ice extent in the Arctic was 10.99 million square miles, the sixth smallest annual value of the 36-year period of record. The annual Antarctic sea ice extent was record large for the second consecutive year, at 13.08 million square miles.

This picture of a catastrophe in the making is not even all the horrible climate news today; a new analysis of data from hundreds of sources shows that we humans are on the brink of causing a mass extinction event in the world’s oceans.

I was going to post something snarky to close this post, but this is some really scary shit, people. And we have a political party in this country doing everything in its power to stop us from dealing with it — if it isn’t already too late. This is political malfeasance on a frightening scale.

Of course, because one of the few areas that experienced cooler than normal temperatures for the majority of the year was centered on the continental US, with the exception of the West Coast, there’s no such thing as warming.

Butbutbut Charles, not ALL of those figures said it was the hottest year on record, therefore NO GLOBAL WARMING!!!

Yeah. I’m so sick of the “but it’s cold right now at my house, so it can’t be warm anywhere else.”

It’s pretty cold out now here in Brooklyn. Correct me if I’m wrong, but that proves conclusively that global warming is a liberal myth created so scientists could keep getting all that sweet, sweet grant money.

Honestly, I’m not that concerned about it. Humanity will adapt and survive. It will not, however, be comfortable or fun. It would be much preferred if we could start doing some things now to actually prevent it from getting to that point.

Well Lizards time to call it night. But this thread is an opportune time to tell you what I am working on. Starting to build a small scale solar power array using these. Decided to go with the smaller discrete panels in packs of four instead of larger higher wattage panels to minimize my loss in the case of physical damage and or electrical failure of a panel. Not looking to go off the grid, but want something that can keep cell phones, pads and similar small items charged up in the event of a long term power outage. Once I get the basics together (have 3 of the panels now, will get the 4th next payday), storage batteries and frame built I will page my initial results and ask for further advice and comments.

As always, may the deity of your choice smile down upon you and yours.

If enough Arctic ice melts to make the Arctic ocean water too light to sink and feed the deep thermohaline circulation, no new water will be needed to replace it, and the Gulf Stream will shut down. Europe in particular will freeze, certainly agriculture will become impossible, and the deniers will crow: “See, Global Warming was a hoax!”

The Gulf Stream actually shut down for a few hours in 2004. Freaked a lot of people out.

This population, let alone tomorrows increase is not sustainable. We passed that point where the permafrost is melting. Some of us will remember what Ludwig had to say about that as a specific turning point. I think nature is going to trim us back to a sustainable size. We won’t. Not from available evidence anyway.

I imagine the smaller population will do quite well. Still billions. I don’t think it makes me a doomsayer to say 10 or 12 or 14 billion just won’t happen.

Read a recent bit on some event, perhaps volcanic, that trimmed us down to about 10,000 mating couples about 70,000 years ago.

“But ah, with the proper breeding techniques and a ratio of say, ten females to each male, I would guess that they could then work their way back to the present Gross National Product within say, twenty years.”

Problem with a generator is you need fuel.

Was reading through my Facebook stream for the first time in a while (mostly because I had to open the app on my phone to tell it that no, I don’t want 3 notifications a day asking if I know x person) and saw a comment from a high school friend also now living in Silicon Valley commenting about how she had someone walk up to her while out running errands and asked in broken Spanish how much she would charge to clean their house.

She’s got her Ph.D. in computer science and works for one of those well-known fancy-pants software companies. The woman was apparently very embarrassed when she moved the scarf and her sweatshirt became more obvious.

There are a lot of conversations we need to have as a country, and this is definitely one of them.

I had a garage door opener go out on me when I was leaving for work. I got out of the car and grasped in between the panels to pull it down, never figuring it would come down so fast. I thought the ends of my fingers were going to burst open! So, there I am, fingers being crushed by the garage door and my knee wedged underneath the door, trying to figure out how to get the thing to go back up again. Learned my lesson on that one.

51 ipsos  Jan 16, 2015 7:39:05pm

My garage door never had an opener to begin with. It hasn’t functioned at all in probably 4 years. But there’s not much roof left over it anyway.

It’s sort of a garage-as-thought-experiment at this point. It keeps at least some of the snow off the car, anyway.

52 A Cranky One  Jan 16, 2015 7:39:08pm

I live in an 84 year old house with a detached garage (common for the period). Had a power outage, and so couldn’t open the garage door. No other doors on the garage, so I had to remove a window from the outside, climb in and open the door manually.

After the second time that happened, I installed a battery powered opener. Still plan to install a cable release on the outside, just in case.

Getting too old to be climbing through windows ;(

Appreciate the thought. Toyed with the idea, but the outside is old stucco, which is incredibly hard. Ran electrical out the side to power a fountain and even with a high quality masonry bit and hammer/drill it took forever to drill a hole through the wall.

Tried using one of those nailers that use 22 blanks to drive a nail to hang a planter. Nails just bounced off. Tough stuff. After that, I abandoned the idea of trying to make even bigger holes!

I’ve got a nine part reply to that, which I’m fairly sure will be totally ignored. Anyway, for whatever it’s worth I managed to get him on record defending that insanity to one of the named experts that he willfully dismissed and refused to even mention he’d consulted in the story. Two if you count Langdale who worked as an image analyst for the USAF. I know Ladd is a severe conservative, to put it politely, and that he wants to cut CCJ as much slack as possible, but at least on this issue he should be commended for not going along with the equivalent of 1+1=3.

That may be a low hurdle to clear, but I’ll take what I can get right now.

Andrew admitted to meeting Roberts, which suggests that the photo of the two of them is real, and not faked, as CCJ still insists.

GDF has pretty much nailed him on the “forensic evidence,” and Andrews has said he met Roberts briefly, so in my book that strongly suggests the photo is authentic. Besides, The Daily Mail may not be the world’s most trustworthy news source, but I figure they wouldn’t shell out real money for a fake photo.

I googled and googled, but couldn’t find the admission that the photo was real. While failure to deny may speak louder than words, it’s not the same as an explicit admission.

This is the best I could find:

Although the prince was quick to insist at the time that there was nothing to the photo, and that he had met Virginia only momentarily, the association with Epstein was sufficiently embarrassing that he promptly resigned as Special Trade Representative, and has struggled to define an official role for himself since, although he is still said by the Palace to be devoted to furthering Britain’s business interests.

I can’t find his verbatim response, but it seems clear at the time he had the opportunity to challenge the authenticity of the photo and instead chose to say that he had in fact met Roberts, but only briefly. His tack seems to have been downplaying the importance of the picture, not validity of the image itself. The way the article is worded one could I guess still wonder if the meeting he was referring to wasn’t when the photo was taken but that he chose to admit to meeting her and not identify the photo as a fake for mysterious and unstated reasons. This seems highly implausible to me, but yes technically possible.

I’m not even taking a position on the actual validity of the photograph itself. There really isn’t enough information in any of the one’s I’ve seen to make a definitive statement of fact. I will say there are no obvious red flags in it to make me suspicious, but this is different than insisting it’s real.

My criticism of CCJ’s analysis is restricted to the sheer impossibility of what he describes his unnamed expert as finding. Jpegs and all other raster file formats never work that way, ever in my experience. As far as I’m aware they actually can’t, it goes against what I consider to be the fundamental definition of the genre. If they could do what his expert claims it would present enormous mathematical and programming difficulties with no conceivable benefit.

I have no beef with the photo being authentic. I didn’t seriously doubt it in the first place. I do have a beef with the claim that he admitted that it is, for he apparently didn’t. And for that matter, neither can I find any non-third-hand sources confirming that he has admitted meeting Roberts. And once again, the failure to deny in this case has almost the force of a direct admission, but the question is, has there been any direct admission in the first place. IOW it’s not about the conclusions, but about how we arrive at them.

re: #39 compound_Idaho

Unless you are buying into the survivalist thing, buy a couple of good deep cycle batteries and a small generator. Solar sucks. Works the worst when you need it the most.

Have a 3.25KW generator complete with USFS approved spark arresting muffler. They have their uses. They also have their drawbacks. The first in my book is they are noisy. Some camp grounds either out right ban them or limit their hours of operation because of this. The second is fuel. Even if you add a stabiliant to it, you still have to rotate your supply and either drain the tank after each use or run it dry. Again, I am not trying to go off the grid here. Just want something that can keep portable electronic devices charged up with a minimum of fuss and still be easily portable.

118 goddamnedfrank  Jan 17, 2015 2:54:05am

Again, third person, but validates the idea the photo was at least being treated as real when it came out:

Last month a photograph emerged of Prince Andrew with his arm around a young woman called Virginia Roberts while she was employed by Epstein as a masseuse. She alleges that Epstein sexually exploited her while she was a teenage minor.

Rugby and Oxford-educated Ms Ashkenazi, 31, who lives in a £28million house in Holland Park, west London, said: “I told Andrew not to worry, that he’d done nothing wrong and that it was being blown out of proportion. Of course, he knows it was unwise to fraternise with this Epstein character and it was silly to be photographed with his arm around Epstein’s masseuse.

“But I know Andrew as a lovely, lovely man - kind-hearted, impeccably behaved and honourable. I’m quite sure at the time he had no idea that she was underage or anything more than a masseuse to Epstein.”

Dershowitz is going on the offensive, it seems, to deflect possible repercussions from the accusations. In fact, he’s being so aggressive in denying those accusations that I suggest his tactics will backfire.

re: #124 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD

Meanwhile he is not careful with his claims about others:

128 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD  Jan 17, 2015 3:32:46am
Dershowitz may be guilty of none of the wrongdoing of which he is accused. If so, his indignation is righteous, and his eventual vindication will be a victory for the justice system as a whole, not only for Dershowitz personally. Nevertheless, observers should not mistake his insistence on his innocence with a suggestion that Dershowitz was completely blindsided by the accusations of the last few weeks. In defending himself against the latest accusations, he should not leave out this important context.

Everyone has a small generator in their driveway. A car will easily charge mobile electronics and an inexpensive inverter will even put out light loads of 110v. My old hobby truck was designed to power tactical radios, and it has a bit more—90 watts at 24v.

That’s not an efficient source, but it is in place, unobtrusive, proven tech, and cheap.

Again. Another good point and one I have also taken into consideration. I guess what I am really trying to do is diversify my power options so I can get away from being reliant on fossil fuels. Hell, I would even consider a hydro rig if I had access to a reliable water source. :-)

BTW, if you properly adj the field voltage on a alternator, you can get 120 VDC.

The right wing wants us to think this is all an elaborate hoax concocted by Al Gore and various academic weasels to get control of assets they didn’t create. Actually, this has been an issue in scientific circles since the 19th century.

This passage is fromThe World We Live In a coffee table size book published by Life magazine in 1955 and based on a series of science articles published in Life between 1952 and 1954:

Yet for the past century, temperatures have shown an upward trend. This has been particularly true in the last four decades (since 1915- SK), during which glaciers have been in retreat all around the world. The reasons for this gradual warming of the Earth cannot be defined with certainty. Along with water vapor and ozone, carbon dioxide helps to trap the Earth’s heat within the greenhouse of the atmosphere and prevents it from radiating away into space. In the last half century, the carbon dioxide ratio in the atmosphere has increased by 10%, a phenomenon which some attribute to expanding industry, pointing out that six billion tons of carbon dioxide pour from factory chimneys every year. (Emphasis added)

The article also speculates about other possible causes including deforestation and the disturbance of the soil. It wasn’t settled then, but it is now. The current consensus was not reached lightly and certainly not in haste.

136 Aye Pod  Jan 17, 2015 5:13:43am
During 2014, the average temperature across global land and ocean surfaces was 1.24°F (0.69°C) above the 20th century average. This was the highest among all 135 years in the 1880-2014 record, surpassing the previous records of 2005 and 2010 by 0.07°F (0.04°C).

Wingnuts are like “0.07F? That’s NOTHING! And anyway, it’s a LIE!”

137 lawhawk  Jan 17, 2015 5:45:55am

re: #136 Aye Pod

And something like 9 of the 10 hottest years on record in the JMA, NOAA, and NASA datasets all occurred after 2000. And the short term and long term trends both show warming that is undeniable except for those that attempt to cherry pick based on the previous warmest year on record (which was surpassed by this past year).

By cherry picking the start date, the denialists were claiming that there was a pause, even though we haven’t seen a colder than average year globally in…. decades.

The statistical evidence is overwhelming that global warming is occurring and that human actions are a part of the reason why. Yet, the denialists are still holding to their nonsensical claims.

More importantly, the GOP is pushing this dangerous nonsense because they’ve tied global warming to Obama and Democrats. The GOP furthers their own agenda by undermining education across the nation (thwarting common core isn’t the only problem - actively pushing anti-science agenda by trying to inflict religious belief in science classrooms is perhaps more dangerous). And with GOPers thoroughly indoctrinated on anti-science, they’re in positions of power to undermine science funding and actively interfering on basic research (as with their proposals to demand oversight and politicize the NSF). The GOP is opposed to basic research even though many advancements in science are the result of basic research where the outcomes aren’t necessarily known in advance. Knowledge for knowledge sake is apparently verbotten to the GOP.

Arctic sea ice is melting rapidly, and within the next decade the effects of global warming may transform the Polar region from an inaccessible frozen desert into a seasonally navigable ocean. The summer of 2011 saw a record 33 ships, carrying 850,000 tons of cargo navigate the Northern Sea Route (NSR) off Russia’s northern coast. This year’s shipping season may see up to 1.5 million tons of cargo, as Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute predicts the NSR to be ice-free and passable for ships by early summer.

The North West Passage (NWP), first ice-free in 2007, and the Transpolar Sea Route (TSR) may also open up to shipping traffic over the coming decades. An in-depth assessment of the viability of shipping along the TSR will be published in the upcoming Arctic Yearbook 2012, which will be available from the Northern Research Forum’s website from October 2012. The development of Arctic offshore hydrocarbon resources and related economic activities will also improve the integration of the Arctic economy in global trade patterns. Multi-year ice and the limited seasonal window for trans-Arctic voyages however, will for the foreseeable future remain formidable obstacles to the development of Arctic shipping and its economic viability. Trans-Arctic shipping routes will thus not serve as a substitute for existing shipping lanes, but will instead provide new and additional capacity for a growing transportation volume.

If there is one statistic that underscores the depth of wealth inequality in Russia, it may be that an estimated 111 billionaires control nearly a fifth of all household wealth in the country. That’s according to the 2014 Credit Suisse analysis, which found that those in the top 10 percent of the population control a staggering 85 percent of wealth in Russia.

Later this year I again oversee an invitational demonstration day at the gold refinery, in which we always attempt to record well if on a tiny budget of a few hundred bucks. In 2013 we used the event to make this 10 minute video showing gold refining.

I got some great news from my boss about this year. This time we will publish a full up documentary about the whole day which has three big demos. So we step up to a rented 4k Sony TV production camera that can be run by one person. And it takes those very good lenses that are built for cinema rather than a still camera. It’s an exciting step up from shooting DSLR digital and separate sound recording.

Not that hardly anyone could view it in 4k anytime soon, but I got a good look at 1080 footage that was shot in 4k. Oh my goodness, talk about tack sharp and then eleven stops of bright to shadow exposure range. Film has about four stops of range. Most cell phone cams have less than that. That means I finally won’t lose so much in the shadows unless I want to. Gets me off the hook for about half the lighting I would have added this year. If you look at the linked video you will see the problem I faced then at about 3:30 and at 8:00.

I can see the reason to get or use a good 4k camera now for superior HD. Laughably that sets up a situation where when 4k is the common resolution, the race will be on for the best 8k to put out in extra sharp and clean 4k. That biz is not for the faint of heart or wallet.

The article has to be read to be believed. Even then, you might think you’re hallucinating due to an unknown gas leak in the house.

Maher has spent the better part of six years literally describing Republicans as the party in the corner playing with its own shit (that’s where I borrowed/stole that from).

Yet, he feels that a representative of that party, who has done nothing but encourage the rank-and-files’ ignorance, would make the perfect President. Because Hillary Clinton is a bad liberal or some idiocy.

Sensor resolution/$ is one of the things that kept me from jumping to digital. Looks like anything around 24 mp will make a reasonable print. If I go back to shooting, it will be something like a mirrorless camera used conceptually as a ‘back’ for my lenses—perhaps incorporating a capable bellows for a micro-viewcamera approach.

The GOP is also pushing nonsense about climate change because it wants to be in power, preferably forever. It it admits the reality of GCC then it’s on the hook for doing something about it. Doing something about GCC would require steps that piss off the GOP’s primary donors as well as requiring Manhattan Project levels of government action. I doubt that either party these days has the stomach to do what’s necessary to ameliorate GCC. If Democrats were suddenly in control of Congress and the White House we’d at least get some nods towards renewable energy and energy efficiency. With Republicans in control we’ll get nothing. What mystifies me is that the military and the re-insurers, among others, are well aware of GCC and are already gaming it’s potential effects yet neither seems to be exerting any influence.

The growing interest in polar ice shipping is being felt in ship orders and construction. Numerous ice class ships are on the order books, and some notable orders and deliveries are those of Nordic Bulk with their Baltic ice class new builds and Canada’s Fednav with delivery of their newest icebreaker cargo ship Nunavik. The latter made news with the first unescorted commercial cargo vessel transit of the Northwest Passage this summer.

One long standing search and recovery mission did result in a very successful search this year as the Canadian Coast Guard ship Sir Wilfrid Laurier and onboard researchers from Canadian Hydrographic Services and Parks Canada discovered the well preserved remains of Sir John Franklin’s flag ship HMS Erebus in the waters near to King William Island in the Canadian central Arctic.

Francis is better than most Popes have been on social issues. Unfortunately, that’s a really low bar to hurdle.

There’s really no sound byte issue here. The Pope feels using of freedom of speech to mock religion is wrong, which unfortunately carries a whiff of “Charlie Hebdo had it coming.”

You want to see assholes, here are some assholes:

Niger protesters burn churches in second day of Charlie riots

Stone-throwing demonstrators set fire to two churches in Niger’s capital Niamey on Saturday, in the latest protest in France’s former African colonies at French newspaper Charlie Hebdo’s cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad.

A day after five people were killed in Niger in protests over the cartoons, protesters in Niamey attacked a police station and burned at least two police cars near the main mosque after authorities banned a meeting called by local Muslim leaders. Police responded with teargas.

“They offended our Prophet Mohammed. That’s what we didn’t like,” said Amadou Abdoul Ouahab, who took part in the demonstration. “This is the reason why we have asked Muslims to come, so that we can explain this to them, but the state refused. That’s why we’re angry today.”

Demonstrations were also reported in regional towns, including Maradi, 600 km (375 miles) east of Niamey, where two churches were burned. Another church and a residence of the foreign minister were burned in the eastern town of Goure.

Four Muslim preachers who had convened the meeting in Niamey were arrested, police sources said. Protesters burned the French flag and set up roadblocks on streets in the town centre but no casualties were reported on Saturday.

Burning police cars in response to a police action I can understand (though as a rule I oppose doing so), but to burn a church ultimately over a magazine in another country I cannot understand.

It’s not about whether a punching can be morally justified (sometimes it can be). It’s not about whether it’s smart to wear a mini-skirt in some areas or not (sometimes it’s not smart). It’s about what you say, when you say it and whether certain comparisons are at all valid. This seems to be so obvious a point that I’m not inclined to explain further.

This is part of a nuanced discussion: rape, theft, assault are always wrong, but a person who is aware of the situation and potential dangers and still knowingly provokes an attack has to bear some (partial if however slight) share of responsibility.

It does not mean that “rape is just like car theft” or anything of the like, it just reflect the fact that human nature and human interaction at a personal, group and national/international level is very complex and has to be treated with great circumspection

Thank you for noticing.

But this iconic county of 3.1 million people passed something of a milestone in June. The percentage of registered Republican voters dropped to 43 percent, the lowest level in 70 years.

It was the latest sign of the demographic, ethnic and political changes that are transforming the county and challenging long-held views of a region whose colorful — its detractors might suggest zany — reputation extends well beyond the borders of this state.

At the end of 2009, nearly 45 percent of the county’s residents spoke a language other than English at home, according to county officials. Whites now make up only 45 percent of the population; this county is teeming with Hispanics, as well as Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese families. Its percentage of foreign-born residents jumped to 30 percent in 2008 from 6 percent in 1970, and visits to some of its corners can feel like a trip to a foreign land.

I couldn’t tell you if the anti-vaxxers were Republican, but Orange County, California is extremely conservative.

Yes, but neither the Guardian nor the LA Times mentioned partisan politics in their story and for good reason:

Once a group of anti-vaxxers is called out as “fundies” or “hippies”, others on the right or left (respectively) tend to react by circling the wagons around those of their faction who are under attack. Facts don’t enter into the decisions of people to do this; protecting others of your family/tribe/faction is to a great degree instinctive.

So its best to either not apply party labels when talking about anti-vaxxers, or keep a close left/right balance so that mainstream Democrats and Republicans don’t feel they’re being attacked.

It depends. The people whom I know in the south part of the OC tend to be liberal in most respects. I just spent a bit more than a year living in San Clemente. My millionaire neighbors were very concerned about ecology issues and water conservation as well as other things that would be considered liberal. Even though I’m an old, long haired liberal who occasionally wore a vintage 2008 Obama/Biden t shirt they were polite, friendly and always willing to lend a helping hand. There are good people as well as assholes on both ends of the liberal-conservative spectrum. I’ve met fine people in South Texas and raging assholes in San Francisco.

You know the best thing about Maher. He too is one vote.

I don’t worry too much about his viewers and if they will follow him in his thinking. They may be too libertarian to actually leave the house to vote.

And regarding everyone debating about the Pope. I would expect him to say what he did about the Paris CH terror attack. He is the head of a religion, so he protects his own.

I also expect the birth control BS out of him too.

But, I will take any positive stuff he can help out on too, like global warming, social issues like wealth, etc.

I tend to be very pragmatic. I’ll take what I can get from one person, and take what I can from another, skip the BS from both and hope there is enough positive to overcome the negative in ALL the issues.

The larger battle to humans may well be the climate issues. If no one is around there will be no need for birth control or critical comedic attacks on untouchable entities. If we can go on a a species we can continue to fight the other stuff.

Nope, not even close. Here’s a link to a CDC map showing vaccination rates for the 2013-2014 school year. And here’s a link to the CDC’s documentation of measles outbreaks in 2014. From that page:

The Philippines is experiencing a large, ongoing measles outbreak. Many of the cases in the U.S. in 2014 were associated with cases brought in from the Philippines.

You are reading too much into my comment. I said climate issues are number one in my opinion. To me, climate issues are an accounting of a lot of changes that will need to be made. Not a singular one. I understand your viewpoint, but you don’t understand that I am not intending to diminish birth control, just that it is a part.

And, politically, it may be harder to get real change on birth control because all of the issues surrounding it that you know all too well. I do not know, but it may be less difficult changing the energy industries. So, that is where the politics are being played. Pick your battles.

Any advancement would be good with me. Birth control would be one, and I admire your resolve on the issue.
