Not to me it isn’t. Ernst is the new flavor. The list of GOP power players and fast rising stars whose names have been forgotten by all save those who do the booking for Sunday talk shows is a long one. Every new face is gonna’ be the one that will cause the smarty-pants Blue Staters to be agog at his or her wisdom. Ben Carson is already an embarrassment, Mia Love turned out to be black, and so it goes.

Well we’ll get to see if they have better luck next month.

Luckily for fans of SpaceX, Musk intends to do just that. According to Musk, the “hypersonic grid fins” — or more poetically, “X-wings” — that help to slow the Falcon’s descent and maneuver it to its target “ran out of hydraulic fluid right before landing.” So next time, SpaceX will simply add 50% more hydraulic fluid, and see if that does the trick.

It’s what she means by that: “My work included castrating pigs” = “My work involved the kind of un-PC, not glamorous, but very important work that we farmers do in Iowa.” Against a trial lawyer who berated incumbent senator Chuck Grassley for being a farmer instead of a lawyer, Ernst’s talk about her farm work struck a cord with Iowans who found her opponent condescending.

Even if she is crazy (which I don’t believe, but for that sake of argument let’s stipulate it), people will generally take a crazy one of their own over a sane but condescending outsider.

Right, she isn’t crazy at all. She just thinks Agenda 21 is a plot to steal America’s sovereignty, wants to ban abortion in all cases, and has called for impeaching Obama.

I did real simple tonight. Did up a batch of wings with my all purpose spice mix, baked them at 500*, then hit them with Franks Hot Wing Sauce. That and some Amish potato salad. (Don’t know what makes it “Amish”). Was going to do old school Chicken ala King, but decided I didn’t want to wait.

Your’s sounds great however. Ya start with a good base of aromatics, let everything get all mingled together, it’s got to be good.

On a side note, looks like I’ll get one of the recumbent bikes out on the road tomorrow. Weather is promising, and a nice 20-25 mile spin might be just what I need.

Life is good.

The wife just loves good hot wings.

My plan tomorrow is some macro photography. My dad gave me his old pocket watches. One is 14kt and was never sold. Literally new condition but circa 1915 maybe newer. Another saw a lot of use, oversize glass face and solid silver. I’m shooting them in opened up internal detail to send the images to an expert for review and possible appraisal. Others are gold filled and worn. So while I’m at it just might try for some art shots. few period items tell a visual story or convey emotion as well as old watches.

I was saying what Joni Ernst meant by what she said. She was facing Bruce Braley, a trial lawyer, in a farm state. Braley had also made the mistake of smacking at Chuck Grassley for being a farmer instead of a lawyer. A good bit of her messaging was to the effect that Braley was an ” impractical effete paper pusher who’d never had the experience of being elbow deep in pigshit”. But that line of attack struck a cord with people in rural Iowa, and she clearly gained electorally from it.

OT - Here we go again with the right-wing antisemitic conspiracy theories:

Jean-Marie Le Pen claims Paris attacks ‘were the work of western intelligence agencies’

In an interview with a virulently anti-western Russian newspaper, Mr Le Pen, 86, gave credence to conspiracy theories circulating on the internet suggesting that the attack was the work of American or Israeli agents seeking to foment a civil war between Islam and the west.

His comments - only partially retracted in an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde today - provoked outrage amongst French politicians. They will also infuriate Marine Le Pen, his daughter, and successor as leader of the FN, who has been trying to distance the party from her father’s extreme and provocative remarks. […]

Jeez. (If I can use that word in this context - hah) She’s got her civil liberties cap on backwards, then. Either that, or she’s trolling for attention.

Having never heard of her before, I googled. She’s written for the WSJ, American Prospect (a liberal rag), The Daily Beast, NYT, Sojourner (!!), plus penned two books about Islam and women’s rights therein.

Without delving too deeply into her oeuvre, I’m going to suggest she’s looking at the world through rose-tinted glasses. Trusting the police and the government to err on the side of the individual’s rights of expression and free assembly is asking a lot.

I don’t usually correct spelling on the Internet, but make the occasional exception when (a) the misspelling produces the correct spelling of a different, but unintended, word, and (b) it’s clearly not just a typo. That I do it at all may make me a fool.

You mean “struck a chord.”

Which Doctor and which episodes, out of curiosity?

My heart is back with the old run, especially the 3rd & 4th Doctors: BBC Special Effects, which is to say shoe-string budgets and suspension of visual disbelief required; coupled with great writing and some wonderful actors. It definitely colors my view that I was lucky enough to meet many of the actors and a couple of the writers at cons in the 80’s & 90’s, and loved ‘em all. Also helps that I cut my wisdoms on Star Trek so I have a high tolerance and even a certain fondness for cheesy special effects. I got hooked on the stories and the characters.

Things are starting to get a little crazy at the ski area. The World Alpine Ski Championships start in a little over two weeks. There are about seven enormous temporary structures at the finish area, including a 3000-seat grandstand, a pavilion bigger than any of the on-mountain restaurants (and those buildings are big, Two Elk Restaurant at the top of Vail Mountain is 26,000 sq. feet) and several auxiliary “tents” for media, tune shops, etc. The famous “double-black diamond” trails of Beaver Creek - the ones that are part of the race courses - closed a couple of weeks ago and won’t open again until the middle of March, maybe. The race crews and groomers have been hard at work building the most fearsome goddamned race courses in the U.S. On the men’s downhill course, speeds of over 80 m.p.h. at certain points on the course are not uncommon.

Exciting times. Vail/Beaver Creek has only hosted the Worlds twice before, in 1989 and 1999. It’s a pretty big deal around here.

I decided to see Inherent Vice tonight. What a pleasant, bizarre mess of a movie. And, as far as I can tell, that’s by design.

It ‘s hard to follow - and if you focus on that you’ll never get down - it’s mostly incoherent. But I settled in after accepting that it had a form of the “unreliable narrator”, the stoner narrator (though technically, the “narration” is done by the only sober character.) Phoenix and Brolin are outstanding. Think 2/3 Big Lewbowski, 1/3 Pineapple Express, with a dash of Pulp Fiction.

I had to laugh at that. He posted two articles about the same topic: Cruz’ many trophies from his collegiate debate career and the “master debater” article, both ripped out of The Daily Princetonian. For the first one, he republished the entire article as a jpeg.

He was trying to counter the Buzzfeed piece about choirboy Cruz being arrested for drinking underage during his college years.

Apparently I’ve got it all wrong and Amendments to the Constitution don’t actually amend the Constitution in anything but the most facile and toothless capacity. What the 14th Amendment explicitly says doesn’t matter because the Federal Courts are supposedly powerless to do fuck all about it.

New York City may yank terrorism report to “appease” its critics.

Under former Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, the report served as a blueprint for the NYPD’s “demographic unit,” which sent plainclothes detectives into Muslim cafes, stores and mosques to detect potential terrorists. After the initiative was exposed by The Associated Press, Muslim leaders and groups filed two lawsuits in Brooklyn federal court claiming they were subjected to unwarranted surveillance.
The suits complain the radicalization report puts virtually all Muslims under suspicion.
Last April, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton disbanded the intelligence-gathering unit.

To each his own! De gustibus non est disputandum

The 9th doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston. Considering that it was filmed in 2005, I was shocked by how bad the CGI was, but my 10-year-old loved it! I grew up watching Star Trek from about age 3 or 4, so I get what you are saying. :-)

New York City may yank terrorism report to “appease” its critics.

That would be a mistake, IMO. The report data is valid and correct; Pulling it would send the message that litigant’s feelings are more important than people knowing the truth of how radicalization happens.

I say its more important that the public have access to that knowledge, even if some people misuse it for political ends (I’m afraid I’m looking at you, Congressman King). People need to know how radicalization occurs so they can spot it. Spotting would-be terrorists ahead of time is our best (and sometimes only) way to avoid the kind of attacks we saw in Paris.

I’ll be honest: I think the NYPD should withdraw from settlement discussions and I also believe the lawsuit should be quashed on national security grounds. We cannot have law enforcement crippled simply because of profiling concerns. This isn’t ‘stop and frisk’, people weren’t actually being directly impacted by the surveillance.

I was born in 1977, so I fall into the Gen X range, which fits right by my thinking. And unlike John Mayer (also born in ‘77), I don’t think the generation he and I belong to is ever really going to be ‘in charge’, as there just aren’t enough of us. Things will pass from the Baby Boomers to the Millennials, just as the passed from the Greatest Generation to the Boomers. Generation X, like the Silent Generation before it, will be remembered as a small generation that did some things notable but never truly defined the tone of the nation.

Good morning Lizards.

Rainy and low 40s today in Philadelphia; e.g. icky.

Just feel slow and run-down this morning. Probably combo of allergies, sinus clog-up, and eating too much stuff yesterday that is making my liver work overtime.

Feline Overlords are avoiding me so far today. I was visiting friends yesterday and came home smelling like *dog*. So I am being punished for traitorishly consorting with the enemy — after I feed them of course. So I’m possibly having some allergic reaction from the dogs, plus whatever newly mutated viruses their 6-year-old daughter brought home from school.

My son was about six when the Eccleston reboot first aired, he thought it was pretty cool. I watched ‘em and thought, “Wow, pretty good for a BBC budget.” Technology’s wonderful, particularly in the special effects fields, though it can never cover for indifferent scripts or acting.

Fun to watch how CGI has changed in the last decade or so. Then look back at the leap between Steamboat Willie (1928) and Fanatsia (1940). The beat goes on!
