Report: NSA Breached North Korean Networks Before Sony Attack

Not a fairy tale
Technology • Views: 54,835

Apparently the FBI and President Obama actually did have good reason to implicate North Korea in the Sony hack. Imagine that: N.S.A. Breached North Korean Networks Before Sony Attack, Officials Say.

WASHINGTON — The trail that led American officials to blame North Korea for the destructive cyberattack on Sony Pictures Entertainment in November winds back to 2010, when the National Security Agency scrambled to break into the computer systems of a country considered one of the most impenetrable targets on earth.

Spurred by growing concern about North Korea’s maturing capabilities, the American spy agency drilled into the Chinese networks that connect North Korea to the outside world, picked through connections in Malaysia favored by North Korean hackers and penetrated directly into the North with the help of South Korea and other American allies, according to former United States and foreign officials, computer experts later briefed on the operations and a newly disclosed N.S.A. document.

A classified security agency program expanded into an ambitious effort, officials said, to place malware that could track the internal workings of many of the computers and networks used by the North’s hackers, a force that South Korea’s military recently said numbers roughly 6,000 people. Most are commanded by the country’s main intelligence service, called the Reconnaissance General Bureau, and Bureau 121, its secretive hacking unit, with a large outpost in China.

The evidence gathered by the “early warning radar” of software painstakingly hidden to monitor North Korea’s activities proved critical in persuading President Obama to accuse the government of Kim Jong-un of ordering the Sony attack, according to the officials and experts, who spoke on the condition of anonymity about the classified N.S.A. operation.

It can’t be true, upChuck has PROOF that it wasn’t the NKs.

In all seriousness, why would this be declassified? Unless it had been detected and sealed off why would the govt want to disclose methodology and tactics?

What say our lizards with that strong security background?

Probably because the public debate has already led the NK government to figure it out by themselves. If it were still secret we wouldn’t be seeing this story.

My own take is that given the high profile of the incident and the fact we imposed sanctions, President Obama wanted to make clear we were right on this one. After the intelligence failure regarding WMDs in Iraq in 2002-2003, people weren’t going to just take the FBI’s word on the matter, so proof was offered.

Passengers Taken Off Plane at JFK as Authorities Investigate Bomb Threat: Sources

nbcnewyork.com

“Passengers on board a Delta flight that was set to take off for Tel Aviv from Kennedy Airport Monday night were deplaned as authorities investigated a bomb threat, sources tell NBC News and NBC 4 New York.

“An anonymous person called Delta headquarters to report a pipe bomb was on board Delta Flight 468, according to law enforcement officials.

(snip)

“The Port Authority said the plane that arrived from San Francisco was deplaned and a K-9 search of the aircraft and baggage area was underway.”

In truth, though, Johnson did this because he’s a nasty little shit, whose entire reason for being is humiliating anyone he possibly can, and doing it under the paper-thin guise of being The Last Honest Reporter, the only man with the guts to tell us all Which Tea Party Genitals are Interacting. These things have a lifespan that’s dependent on the sophistication and the wariness of the target. Once a particular means of attack is discovered it becomes useless. When that happens you look for other vulnerabilities and you write some new code.

Vince Wilfork is one of the New England Patriots defensive tackles. Number 75 isn’t a household name, but he played his part well in suffocating the Indianapolis Colts’ offense last night, leaving Indy’s defense stuck on the field to be eviscerated by Tom Brady and the Patriot’s offense. But it was after the game that Wilfork really shined:

Vince Wilfork helps driver trapped in roll over crash

New England Patriots all-star defensive tackle Vince Wilfork scored extra points after the game with Indianapolis Sunday night.

Massachusetts State Police said Wilfork helped them rescue a woman trapped in a car after it rolled over near Gillette Stadium.

When troopers arrived to investigate reports of a vehicle that had rolled over on Route 1 in Foxborough, “to their surprise … Wilfork was beside the vehicle checking on the operator” of the 2015 Jeep Wrangler, police said.

“It was something we saw and we knew she needed help, so we helped,” Wilfork told reporters Monday. “The good thing is that we got her to safety.”

“The first thing I told her was ‘don’t panic.’ My job was to help the person in the car,” he said.

The report goes on to note the woman turned out to have been drinking and was arrested for DUI. It’s great that Wilfork was able to save her, but to bears saying that had she not gotten drunk she would not have needed saving.

Bobby Jindal’s continued embrace of that ‘no-go zones’ meme even after FNC issued a full retraction was so dumb that even the normally mild Anderson Cooper let Jindal have it. The title of Cooper’s Jindal segment: “Talking Point, Meet Fact.”

In lying about a matter in which lives are at stake and refusing to admit being wrong even after the used source issued a retraction, Bobby Jindal has done the same thing as Michele Bachmann did in 2012 regarding the Gardasil HPV vaccine. And his having done such forces me to make the same determination I made then regarding Bachmann:

By his blind indifference to the truth on a life-and-death issue, Bobby Jindal has shown himself unfit for leadership. Should he run for president in 2016, I will not vote for him, even if he were to win the Republican nomination. To repeat, even in the general election I will not vote for Bobby Jindal.

WTF…. I just can’t begin to understand who would store a pistol in a headboard shelf when there are small children in the house…

According to the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Office, the nine-month-old baby boy was shot shortly before nine o’clock Monday morning by his five-year-old brother at their residence, located at 101 S. Scott in Elmo, Missouri, which is just south of the Iowa border.

According to the Nodaway County Sheriff’s Office the the mother of the two children said her five-year-old son shot her infant in the head with a paintball gun. But after an ambulance and law enforcement were dispatched to the location, it was determined the nine-month-old had been shot in the head with a .22 caliber magnum revolver.

Nodaway County Sheriff, Darren White, said the loaded gun had been kept on a shelf which was built into the headboard of the master bed. The infant was in a crib in that room, and law enforcement found the gun nearby

The American intelligence community, foreign and domestic, employs “hackers” and cyber security experts that make N. Korea look like babes in toy land. You rarely hear about them for a very good reason…they do not talk. But if any of you have ever come in contact with any of them them in any way….I have…you know how brilliant they are and their capabilities, at least what they can tell you.

Wingnuts like CCJ flip because they have NO idea what our cyber intelligence capabilities are. They’re so, so, so very stupid when it comes to any kind of advanced technology. God, so mind-blowingly stupid and ignorant. North Korea? Please.

UpChuck’s latest GotNews “hit pieces” target Michael Moore, and miss by a country mile.

First, he tries to doxx Moore’s uncle, who was KIA during WWII. He can’t verify uncle was killed by a sniper, but he goes ahead and implies Moore made it up, even though he finds doxx verifying the KIA part.

Then, he publishes a story all but calling Moore a coward for pulling an anti-NRA bit on cable TV, but the article he reprints says it was the network that made the decision.

As usual, gotnwes.com is on the case.

There’s a point at which hackery becomes self-satirizing, and his new book-like object has reached it, if this excerpt is at all representative.

So let me make it clear—I’m a proud son of the South, but I can easily relate to folks from the Midwest, Southwest, and most of rural America. I feel a bit more disconnected from people who have never fired a gun, never fished with a cane pole, never cooked with propane, or never changed a tire. If people use “summer” as a verb as in, “we summer in the Hamptons,” I probably don’t have much in common with them. If people don’t put pepper sauce on their black-eyed peas or order fried green tomatoes for an appetizer, I probably won’t relate to them without some effort.

This book will be very encouraging to people who live in Bubba- ville. And to those who live in Bubble-ville, it will be very enlightening. After you’ve read it, you’ll probably still want to live in your same bubble, but you might at least for the first time really understand those of us you fly over and look down on when you make the LA to New York red-eye flight and wonder, “Just what kind of people live there?” Because most of the movies and television shows portray people living in one of the bubbles, we know you pretty well. We get your unique phrases, attitudes, and even know something about your various neigh- borhoods. But I don’t think you know us very well. We really don’t live in Bugtussle* and we do have indoor plumbing and electricity. So let me introduce you to the land and the people for whom God, guns, grits, and gravy all make perfect sense. After you finish the book, you might just say, “Dang, those good ol’ boys ain’t so dumb after all.”

While Charlie Hebdo returned to Parisian newsstands with a defiant image of a contrite Mohammad emblazoned on its cover, Timbuktu, a much-praised, Oscar-nominated movie by the internationally known Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Sissako was unceremoniously yanked out of a theater in the Paris suburb, Villiers-sur-Marne.

The district, which has a large North African population, is the birthplace of Hayat Boumeddiene, the fugitive companion of the perpetrator of the Hyper Cacher massacre Amedy Coulibaly. The town’s mayor Jacques-Alain Bénisti (a member of the Sarkozy’s Union for a Popular Movement) first called the movie, which he had not seen, “an apology for terrorism” and then had it removed Friday from the Cinema City Casino because he feared that young people might take the jihadists for a model. I just…. Yeah, brilliant. Good going. *smh*

Speaking of Timbuktu, here’s a Page I created two years ago that had to do with some ancient archives that were saved from radical Islamists who were pillaging the area and destroying things, as is their wont. What a closed minded asshole.

I can relate to all the stuff he lists there. I barbequed a bunch of pork this weekend. I’ve got delicious leftovers in the fridge. I serve it with proper corn bread and collards. I may not be from the south, but my stepfather is from Mississippi and my wife is from Texas. And southern food is the best American food.

I listened to country music while driving around in a 4x4 today. I don’t just change the tires on it, I do all the maintenance. I put a new air filter and spark plugs in it over the weekend so I can take it to get smogged this week (I’m in California; it’s that year).

I’ve shot guns. It’s fun, but not enough to justify the public health disaster our current laws amount to. Dirt bikes and muddin’ are more fun, anyway.

I don’t “summer” anywhere, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. It’s gorgeous here nearly year round. And just because my tastes run to the redneck end of the spectrum, doesn’t mean I cannot relate to the people around me. I’ve got friends of all stripes, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Just hanging out with people exactly like me would be boring. I bet he’s just afraid to try (trust me, Huck, teh gay isn’t contagious; after a decade here, I’m as straight as I ever was).

Also, I bet I could find awesome southern food LA and NYC. But I’m also willing to go into restaurants run by Blah People.

(CNN)A Montana pipeline burst sent as much as 50,400 gallons of oil gushing into the Yellowstone River, prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency.

Residents in nearby cities were told not to drink the tap water, which some said smelled like diesel.

The massive oil spill happened when the 12-inch pipeline, which crosses the Yellowstone River, ruptured Saturday about 5 miles upstream from Glendive, Montana’s Department of Environmental Quality said. The Bridger Pipeline company shut down the pipeline.

Glendive City Council member Gerald Reichert was among the residents who noticed a disturbing odor in the drinking water.

“Suddenly at our house there was a definite smell. It was a diesel smell,” Reichert told the Grand Forks Herald.

Networking question:

I’ve had a few clients complain about temporary loss of internet. The general consensus seems to be no internet but it comes back later. I’ve tried hammering and tweaking on the WiFi access points, but still getting reports of periodical internet loss that mysteriously comes back.

Location 1: Arris modem/router provided by ISP
Location 2: Motorola Surfboard modem with ProSafe router provided by me
Location 3: Arris modem/router provided by ISP (different model than Loc 1)
Location 4: Motorola Surfboard modem (diff than Loc 2) with Engenius router/access point

Location 4 is my own house. The other locations are within a few miles of each other, and we’re all within 20 miles or so, with the same ISP (Oceanic).

What happens to me: internet working and humming along, then all of the sudden page loads hang and time out. When this happens, I could ping Google 8.8.8.8. After 5-10 mins max, web surfing comes back. The first few times it happened I rebooted my router, but the last few times I left it on and hammered on testing it until internet came back up.

Also, when internet down, Chrome gives me a Details message about DNS server not resolving. I think that’s a clue.

I think our ISP has a problem but don’t know exactly what it is. Or how to get them to fix it.

And tar sands oil isn’t considered crude oil, so TransCanada/Keystone isn’t required to contribute to the federal oil spill liability trust fund.
And then there’s this:

TransCanada’s one-sided, often forced, contracts tell landowners they should, at the property owner’s expense, take out liability insurance because economic damages to land and water are not covered under any federal law when a spill happens. On top of that, TransCanada leaves the pipeline in the ground for the landowner to dig up and restore the soil once TransCanada is finished using that massive piece of foreign steel. Again, at the landowners’ risk and the landowners’ expense.

Whoops? IDF meant to target “low ranking targets, not Iranian general and high ranking Hizbullah figures?”

Seriously?

Iranian Revolutionary Guard General Mohammed Allahdadi was killed with a Hezbollah commander and the son of the group’s late military leader, Imad Moughniyeh, in Sunday’s attack on a Hezbollah convoy in the Syrian Golan Heights.

Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran and fought a 34-day war with Israel in 2006, said six of its members died in the strike.

Tehran has vowed to strike back. “These martyrdoms proved the need to stick with jihad. The Zionists must await ruinous thunderbolts,” Revolutionary Guards’ chief General Mohammad Ali Jafari was quoted on Tuesday as saying by Fars news agency.

“The Revolutionary Guards will fight to the end of the Zionist regime… We will not rest easy until this epitome of vice is totally deleted from the region’s geopolitics.”

Asked if Israel expected Iranian or Hezbollah retaliation for the air strike, the source said: “They are almost certain to respond. We are anticipating that, but I think it’s a fair assumption that a major escalation is not in the interest of either side.”

Troops and civilians in northern Israel are on heightened alert and Israel has deployed an Iron Dome rocket interceptor unit near the Syrian border.

“We did not expect the outcome in terms of the stature of those killed - certainly not the Iranian general,” the source said. “We thought we were hitting an enemy field unit that was on its way to carry out an attack on us at the frontier fence.”

“We got the alert, we spotted the vehicle, identified it was an enemy vehicle and took the shot. We saw this as a limited tactical operation.”

In other words, they’re trying to claim that they didn’t know who they were targeting, and “got lucky” in that the targets were HVTs?

Is that truly believable? I don’t really think so. I think this is Israel’s way of trying to roll back the fact that they targeted these guys on purpose, and it’s not a particularly good excuse. Israel has been trying to track HVTs in Syria and Lebanon for years, and Israel has been targeting transfers of gear/personnel between Syria and Lebanon for years. Israel has struck at targets inside Syria and Lebanon in the past where they suspected weapons transfers, so to now claim that they struck this particular vehicle even though they didn’t know who was inside was a high value target like an Iranian general or the son of Hizbullah’s former leader (who had himself been killed) rings hollow.

Frankly, the claim that they didn’t know raises more questions, and could get Israel in more trouble with the ICC (where everyone who’s opposed to Israel’s existence seems to want to bring Israeli leaders to account for their actions) than for retaliating for Hamas launch a war against Israel last year.

No, they want the government to let the pipeline be built. The US Federal government would not be paying for Keystone XL’s construction, though it would incur costs related to its regulation and monitoring.

Hell, after the first catastrophic spill, the pipeline will pay for itself!

re: #153 A Mom Anon

There is one possible benefit- the pipeline would reduce the need to transport the same tar sands petroleum products by rail, where there have been several high profile derailments, including one in Quebec that essentially leveled a town.

That benefit, however, is outweighed by the following facts:
1) the pipelines still cross sensitive wetlands and aquifers, that, if damaged, could cause irreparable harm;
2) companies are already routing that oil around the proposed pipeline and the purpose of the pipeline is to feed refineries on the Gulf Coast for export elsewhere;
3) This is from Canadian tar sands, and Canadians have chosen not to build refineries and pipelines within Canada to its own coasts for export; and
4) At current prices, it doesn’t make any sense to build out this capacity because it’s not cost effective to drill, refine, and bring to market.

That’s one of the reasons that tar sands were last to get tapped for oil drilling; they weren’t cost effective unless the cost of oil per barrel was up around $100 a barrel. With oil at half that price, there’s no incentive to tap that oil. And the other exporting nations aren’t cutting production either even though demand has slackened worldwide (but not in the US, where economic growth is still forecast - and the lower oil prices has meant billions more for people to spend on goods and services rather than flowing into the energy companies alone).

So, you’re saying the pipeline, at current oil price levels, is a big boondoggle, which will lose money for investors as long as Brent oil remains under $100/bbl.

We learn from the misfortunes of others sometimes right?

The scene of yesterdays fire. A $25 UL rated power-strip and a $5 breaker in the socket both failed. During off hours. Sprinklers put it out before the FD broke in. The material is an acid resistant polycarbonate that partially burned and certainly melted.

Folks, test your circuit breakers regularly. Home and work. Sometimes the fail mode is power on rather than off.

So, I haven’t seen either Selma or American Sniper, so I can’t comment on the technical merits, the acting, or the stories embodied in either movie. But I can comment on the fact that some people have turned both into a litmus test of sorts.

Chris Kyle was a flawed person. We all are. He was a sniper in the military, and while the movie is supposed to focus on his exploits overseas, and some of the consequences of his actions when he returned back home, it offers up a limited view of what he actually did.

His estate’s battles with Jesse Ventura (another servicemember who served in the SEALs before going into the WWF and then politics), for one. Kyle’s estate lost a defamation suit, which raises questions about Kyle’s honesty and actions before his untimely death at a firing range where he was trying to help another servicemember who was dealing with PTSD.

So, it is possible that the movie was faithful to Kyle’s book and family’s views, and the artistic choices to limit what made it to the screen can serve to turn what’s a largely biographical story into a hagiography.

Meanwhile, some of the same criticisms are being leveled against Selma, which takes a look at MLK’s life during the period around the Selma march. It’s a limited snapshot of MLK’s life, rather than a sweeping view of his entire life. Those limitations and choices are also questioned when dealing with how LBJ was portrayed.

Well, having studied the civil rights movement way back when in college, and also visiting the LBJ ranch this past November and reading up on his actions in the civil rights legislation, the fact is that LBJ was a SOB and the question is not whether he was for or against the civil rights agenda, but rather how he could make it work for him politically. At points, MLK and LBJ could work together on the subject, but at others, they were at loggerheads. It was a complex relationship - as most relationships are.

But in the end, we’re talking about movies here; they’re entertainment. I’m not going to see them for education purposes. I’m certainly not going to see them for the history or autobiographies of either Kyle or MLK.

If they get you thinking about the civil rights movement (in Selma’s case), then that’s awesome. Then go get yourself a copy of Eyes on the Prize or other extraordinary books about the civil rights movement and just what was at stake here.

Or that the civil rights movement didn’t end with the passage of the VRA or CRA; the battle for equal rights and equal protection under the law continues to this day as unequal protection under the law continues with racial profiling and officer-involved shootings and excessive force incidents where those who are killed are disproportionately black and the law enforcement members are not indicted, let alone prosecuted (or convicted). It’s an ongoing struggle.

If American Sniper gets you thinking about what we order our troops to do, and the lack of support once they return stateside, then that too has served a purpose. Far too many people who saw combat overseas do not get sufficient support for their mental health; which is just as critical as their physical health. PTSD is insidious and takes many forms, and can lead to suicide or physical harms to others. We, as a nation, simply don’t do enough to care for those who serve once they return stateside. Out of sight, out of mind.

And that has to change too.

Googled “what is the difference between a comic book and a graphic novel?” and got:

“Both comic books and graphic novels use a combination of illustrations and words to tell a story. That story can be anything, whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, the tale of a superhero or of a zombie apocalypse. The difference isn’t so much in the content, but in the presentation.

Comic books are serialized stories; most are relatively short, and tell the story of the book’s heroes and heroines over a long period of time. There are usually many, many issues of a successful comic book, and the stories unfold over months and sometimes years.”

Industries and business have regulations. I want a regulation that says no mention of running for elective office prior to the calendar of that election…or something.

I know it won’t happen. But I do not remember presidential elections starting in December, one month after the last election. Then again…we didn’t have 600 channels of TV and the ‘net either.

Never mind! I can always turn it all off and draw or play guitar or drums.

Man’s law here on earth
God’s law in heaven

Free-will being the point. On Earth we choose —man’s law allows for that.
Simply codifying God’s law does not constitute a choice. It is how each of us act of our own volition each and every minute that God pays attention to.

On earth, we have to create laws that work, here on earth to maintain human rights and civil society.

5 Chechens arrested in France, including 1 with explosives

PARIS (AP) - Five ethnic Chechens from Russia have been arrested in southern France, including one with a cache of explosives, a local mayor said Tuesday as four other men appeared at a court in Paris, the first to face charges in the Paris terror attacks.

Beziers Mayor Robert Menard confirmed the five arrests Tuesday in Beziers and on the outskirts of Montpellier. He said the man arrested in Beziers had been a resident “for some time.”

Midi Libre, the local paper, said an explosives cache was found in Beziers near a stadium but prosecutor Yvon Calvet told Midi Libre it wasn’t immediately clear whether a terror attack was planned. Prosecutors planned to hold a news conference later Tuesday in Beziers.

I’ve noticed this with books, since I have gone almost all kindle, I have no idea what the cover art on the last several books I’ve read looks like. I know they have the pictures in a thumbnail in the library, but you look at it once maybe and then once you start reading the book it alway opens up to where you left off so it isn’t like a physical book where the art work is staring you in the face every time you pick up the book. Sometimes I even forget the title of the book I am reading because I don’t see it every time I pick up the book.

This will surprise exactly zero Muslims. That’s what the jihadis wanted—a big, emotional reaction from the West that would be answered by a big, emotional reaction across the Muslim world—and that’s what they got. The “Clash of Civilizations” narrative lives on for another day and God only knows how many more jihadis were spawned. Emphasis added is mine:

Hundreds of thousands join anti-Charlie Hebdo march in Chechnya

Hundreds of thousands of people have marched through the capital of the majority Muslim region of Chechnya in Russia to protest against the “vulgar and immoral” Charlie Hebdo magazine. […]

Reuters reports that the protest may have been backed by the Kremlin because it was shown live on state television and may have been a way to allow Russia’s Muslims to vent anger after a similar rally was banned in Moscow. […]

Not all those folks want to impose a theocracy, but a very active and vocal share of them do. And they believe in Dominionism: the idea the the USofA has a special relationship with God because our our laws reflect (their notion of) His Divine Will on Earth.

As soon as we start allowing (things that they see as) abominations unto His eyes like abortion, gun control, progressive taxation, gay marriage, amnesty for illegal aliens, etc., we are breaking our Covenant with The Lord and just inviting him to come down on us with a big smiting.

“That is an irresponsibility!” he said. The woman might argue that she should trust in God. “But God gives you methods to be responsible,” he said.

He said there are many “licit” ways of regulating births that are approved by the church, an apparent reference to the Natural Family Planning method of monitoring a woman’s cycle to avoid intercourse when she is ovulating.

Any concept of the Man’s irresponsibility?

FemNazi…

I was just pondering something about man and religion. Imagine today’s world, with all the info, the internet, modern conveniences, travel, etc., and no mention of religion at all. Think of it as if religion did not exist, never had, etc. (I know hard to do, but stick with me…it’s a bit of a brain teaser)

How long before a human started to wonder about what is out there, who made all this, and where are we going after we die? How long before they would start to conjure up something more than what we have, what we know? How long before they once again start to think of ‘gods’ like that big ol’ orange ball in the sky, or those big nasty storm gods? How long before we end right where we are?

I give this Pope credit for even saying this. In the past it’s always been the duty of Catholics to breed as many future Catholics as possible, and let God worry about the consequences,

And no, I’m not going to page this.

And John Gibson urging his viewers (old conservative white people) to have more babies.

On The Big Story, John Gibson urged viewers to “[d]o your duty. Make more babies,” because he had found out, from a recently released report, that nearly half of all children under the age of five in the United States are minorities. Gibson added: “You know what that means? Twenty-five years and the majority of the population is Hispanic.” Gibson later repeated: “To put it bluntly, we need more babies.”

This is what I was getting act. You have a new example that I had not thought about.

We tend to forget when we discuss any religion that there are

a) people who identify culturally or socially with a religion, but do not closely follow its tenets

b) people who follow it closely but would not think of imposing it on other through law or force

c) those who follow it closely and seek to impose it on others through legislation

and

d) those who would also use violence or force to impose their religion.

Especially when it comes to Islam in America and Europe, a lot of people make no distinction between the former and the latter two.

Is man to a degree predisposed to want something bigger than earth? Is man predisposed to think about and create a ‘religion’ so that he has something he doesn’t understand to believe in? Do we need the big mystery, do we all strive to have an unknown that we have to figure out? People learn and remember better thru stories than fact (fiction vs. non-fiction). So if a leader (parent, clan elder etc) wants to impart facts of reality to his/her illiterate people, a story is the best way to go.

“Don’t eat the (poisonous) purple berries on this particular tree because the great spirit loves you and wants you to be strong” story over time becomes “purple is the color of evil, use it and you and your children will go to hell”

My only answer is scientifically correct comprehensive sex ed and birth control.

Agreed with all your comments Wendell. I think you are thinking about religion as it already exists. I guess I am looking to see why it exists.

I was just kicking around the very concept of religion and where it starts. Is it just a part of man’s thinking…the old “the grass is greener on the other side” that we seem to always need to have something to search for or believe in.

That is why I mentioned things like a sun god, one of man’s earliest creations. It just seems we can never be satisfied and/or accept just being humans on earth.

I just like to think and conceptualize. It keeps the ol’ head exercised!

Of course, everything Middle East related involves bombing. What else could there be? Take it away Jon…

Mind you, there doesn’t look like anything resembling photobombing going on. Everyone is in the photo and Miss Israel is taking a photo with everyone smiling and posing. Doesn’t look like a photobomb to me. In fact, Miss Israel is taking up just a small sliver of real estate in that photo… /

Okay, let’s say I accept your premise and it’s all about humans’ gullibility & need to feel important. And let’s say we could somehow get rid of all religion. More to your point —there has been research into the nature of our brains and if we are predisposed to religion or belief.

IIRC, it’s all inconclusive and subject to interpretation.

I think we are pre-disposed to be pack animals and to “follow the leader” as a survival skill. Emotions trump intellect. As our frontal lobes are the last to myelinate and often do not fully do so, many adults may be functionally intellectual teenagers their entire lives. Those who experience trauma early in life have it worse.

Add to that that a certain percentage of the population does not develop the ability to read beyond a 6th grade level (either because of lack of education, emphasis on reading in the home or a learning disability) and the ability to overcome emotions by one’s own volition is hampered.

And sometimes, I think, people DON’T ENJOY thinking. Something I totally don’t understand, but there you have it.

Interesting stuff on Pack Animals.

There was a research team that followed wolves (IIRC, in Canada). They found that wolfs had two pack orders —a multi-generational nuclear family with a alpha male and female that equally shared power and an all unattached males “gang” which had a strictly hierarchical power structure.

The analogies to humans was scary.

Myth of the Alpha wolf

“The concept of the alpha wolf as a “top dog” ruling a group of similar-aged compatriots,” Mech writes in the 1999 paper, “is particularly misleading.” Mech notes that earlier papers, such as M.W. Fox’s “Socio-ecological implications of individual differences in wolf litters: a developmental and evolutionary perspective,” published in Behaviour in 1971, examined the potential of individual cubs to become alphas, implying that the wolves would someday live in packs in which some would become alphas and others would be subordinate pack members. However, Mech explains, his studies of wild wolves have found that wolves live in families: two parents along with their younger cubs. Wolves do not have an innate sense of rank; they are not born leaders or born followers. The “alphas” are simply what we would call in any other social group “parents.” The offspring follow the parents as naturally as they would in any other species. No one has “won” a role as leader of the pack; the parents may assert dominance over the offspring by virtue of being the parents.

Wolves get a really bad rap in this country. Americans have these mythical scenes in their minds of wolves attacking people and devouring entire villages and so on…maybe brought these fantasies with them from Europe, but American timber wolves have attacked humans just exactly zero times, at least since Europeans have been here to write about it.

And then there’s “lone wolves”, and “wolf packs” as a danger…it was an American journalist who invented the term “Wolf Packs” for the German U-boat search pattern that Dönitz called the Rudeltaktik—the “rake strategy”.

I agree, but keep in mind that it also becomes relevant when one group of believers have decided another group of believers have the “wrong” beliefs because they differ from theirs. Humans are contentious and constantly trying to show how their group/tribe is superior others. It’s not a trait specific to religion—it happens with racism, nationalism, etc.

People seem to be wired to see cause/effect relationships. So when people look at the world, it’s natural to ask if there is a cause. It’s the meta “Why?” that many religions address. Why does the world exist? Why am I alive, is there a purpose for my life? There is also an element of superstitious behavior (I did x and y happened, so if I want y to happen I do x) which gets institutionalized.

My spouse would also argue that people have a “spiritual” side, a need to connect with something greater than themselves, be it a god or a oneness with the universe.

Many people also don’t like to think. They’ve never considered constructing an ethical/moral framework to define their behavior. For those folks, having a set of standards imposed externally makes it possible to avoid actually having to create and justify a framework. This is the group who believe that atheists feel free to rape and kill because they don’t fear divine retribution.

Other people simply lack empathy and need a moral/ethical framework imposed on them to allow them to function in society. Basically, for those folks, this is how society controls their behavior.

Religion is also a useful tool for controlling populations and justifying the status quo, as in “I’m king by divine will and God wants you to do what I say”.

So I’d argue that religion serves a purpose at both the individual and societal level. Whether that is a good thing is a different discussion.

re: #359 FemNaziBitch

Also, there are sooo many people who are financially illiterate. Or can not think globally (big picture).

Thus the old wingnut memes of “lazy people” works for them. The reality that two people working full-time and can qualify for assitances doesn’t compute with them. These people must be mismanaging their money or something.

These are the same people who have a gazillion dollar a month mortgages and luxury cars and can’t afford tutoring for their children or any medical procedure that isn’t covered by insurance.

Yet, they aren’t facing bankruptcy or need government handouts so they are the responsible ones.

*spit*

This is the epitome of White Privilege.

369 klystron  Jan 20, 2015 10:19:46am

I think the reality is that religion would not be so widespread in the world and have such an impact if it didn’t fill some …niche in the human ecosystem, for lack of a better way to put it. Like some other people are spelling out nicely above me.

There are a lot of bigots around that lump all Muslims into the same bucket & ignore the non-religious aspects of terrorism. Atheists that do that are hiding behind their anti-religion stance to push their outright bigotry.

389 Decatur Deb  Jan 20, 2015 10:29:51am

re: #321 CuriousLurker

I can answer that, but your theory sounds plausible.

When some atheists start ragging on religion, talking about how stupid it is to need/want to believe in myths/fairytale made up by humans who wanted the control it gave them, and asserting how much better off we’d be without all that, I always have to wonder:

Okay, let’s say I accept your premise and it’s all about humans’ gullibility & need to feel important. And let’s say we could somehow get rid of all religion. How long do you think it would be before another enterprising human came along and invented a new one that would grow just as big as the old ones?

Not long, I’ll bet.

Even as a non-believer, I recognize that some form of religion is an essential part of human cultural inventory. There are almost no examples of populations that do not generate at least one. That’s possibly because those that fail to produce that kind of ‘glue’ lack the group cohesiveness needed to survive.

Off to see Selma. Wonder how it will hold up to the Huntley/Brinkley version.

“Mr. Speaker, Mr. Majority Leader, thank you for inviting me here tonight to discuss the state of our union. The state of our union is strong, and it’s all because of me, motherfkers, and no thanks to your sorry, wrinkled white asses. I did everything I could do to pull the economy out of the shallow grave your deregulatory frenzy and the two-term nitwit who preceded me dug for it. You stood there like squeaking eunuchs and blocked everything you could, and a narrow slice of the electorate gave you virtually unprecedented control over the entire national legislature. I don’t care. Your party has sold its soul and lost its mind. I’m not going anywhere. So I’m’a gonna do what I goddamn well please, because the state of our union is strong, motherfkers, and it’s all because of me. Nice to see you all again, though.”

He makes unsubstantiated claims about images (pixel size) that are based on the word of a cat person.

Drums of cyberwar: North Korea’s cyber-WMDs
By Robert Graham
— Tuesday, January 20, 2015
In regard to the NYT story, I found this dissenting opinion today. Excerpts:

The story claims the NSA has thoroughly hacked North Korea since 2010, and that’s what enabled the US government to tell who was responsible for the Sony hack. But if this were true, then we hacked first, and the Sony hack is retaliation — meaning we had no justification for Obama’s sanctions. But, if the story is false, then again sanctions against North Korea aren’t justified, because we don’t have the proof our government claims. True or false, this story means the U.S. sanctions against North Korea aren’t justified.

..

Some people compare this DRPK-cyberwar propaganda with the Iraq-WMD propaganda. It turns out that this is indeed an appropriate comparison. David Sanger, the author of the above cyber story, has been the chief Washington correspondent for the New York Times for over 20 years. SourceWatch, a site that tracks those who influence government policy, blames Sanger along with Judith Miller for hyping WMDs as a justification for the Iraq war.
