The line of the night is of course “I Know Because I Won Both”…

Like I said, the GOP thought they’d be cute an applaude the “no more campaigns” line. So Obama dropped the ad-libbed boom.

I think he set them up. We all know these GOP can’t not talk back at POTUS,,,remember “you lie”…and as usual they fell for it.

Eggplant has to be cooked thoroughly to get rid of its more obnoxious eggplant-y flavor. Salting it draws out excess water, which allows the eggplant to absorb more delicious flavors while cooking. They also have an amazing ability to soak up oil like a sponge, which can be a problem if you don’t like oily food.

It’s one of my favorite vegetables. Eggplant parmigiana. Stir-fried eggplant. Roasted eggplant. …

NYT was first up with the butthurt narrative over Obama’s “I won both” line.

Of course NYT…of course.

“In much of President Obama’s State of the Union speech, he discussed unifying themes.

But in one off-script moment, he flashed his notoriously competitive side.

Mr. Obama likes to remind voters that his days of running for office are over and he did so on Tuesday night, offering, “I have no more campaigns to run.”

The Republican side of the chamber broke out in cheers and Mr. Obama, cracking a sly smile, responded: “I know because I won them both.”

After that, it was back to bipartisanship.”

The right wing in the United States lost me completely about a year after Obama took office. I credit LGF for acutely bringing the bad craziness to my attention over that period of time, but a pattern definitely emerged as time went on. Conservative politicians today are reactionary, atavistic, and completely out of touch with reality. Obama says “voting is sacred,” at his sixth State of the Union address, conservatives in the House Chamber sit on their fucking hands.

I got out of my rehearsal tonight just in time to catch Joni Ernst’s response to the SOTU.

I don’t want to sound mean, but she sounded like a genuinely stupid person, addressing people that she believes to be even more stupid than she is.

Do the Congressional old heads let the rookies do the response because they simply can’t be bothered to do it themselves? I know it’s supposed to represent some kind of award to the noobs, but damn. Under-inflated balls are easier to get a grip on when wet. Fully inflated, the balls get slippery; when slightly under-inflated a wet ball is easier to throw and to catch.

Basically, it amounts to a charge that the Patriots cheated. Unfortunately, the coach has a reputation for pushing the line when looking for an advantage. Guess we’ll see what happens.

My very rough take (more in the spirit than an actual translation) is that he was talking about DREAMers and that it doesn’t benefit us to separate kids from their parents, and that we can be a nation of both laws and immigrants.

You gotta give the Patriots credit. When they cheat, they come up with really new and creative ways to do so.

But they will probably lose some draft choices or something over this as punishment. Really really dumb.

Well hold on. As I understand it, the home team preps 36 balls for the game. The refs inspect a sampling of them before the game. Both teams use the same balls. It is kind of hard to make a case that underinflated balls helped one team while they simultaneously hurt the other team. And if anyone is at fault it is the referees for not being diligent in the inspections.

Did I lose the link to more pics in the slipstream? Beautiful work. As an aside, I worked in pen and ink for years. I finally reached the point where I had a real agent who placed my stuff in real galleries. When I divided what I received for those that sold by the number of hours I put into them it turned out that I was working for less than minimum wage. Being a top tier machinist paid way better and it was just as satisfying in its own way.

One of the Smithsonian buildings features an ‘amateur’ telescope made from Ford truck parts by an unemployed machinist. Spent a long time looking at it, and realized I was never going to build a telescope.

I like to think of this speech as the “Line in the Sand” speech, particularly with this bit:

At every step, we were told our goals were misguided or too ambitious; that we would crush jobs and explode deficits. Instead, we’ve seen the fastest economic growth in over a decade, our deficits cut by two-thirds, a stock market that has doubled, and health care inflation at its lowest rate in fifty years.

So the verdict is clear. Middle-class economics works. Expanding opportunity works. And these policies will continue to work, as long as politics don’t get in the way. We can’t slow down businesses or put our economy at risk with government shutdowns or fiscal showdowns. We can’t put the security of families at risk by taking away their health insurance, or unraveling the new rules on Wall Street, or refighting past battles on immigration when we’ve got a system to fix. And if a bill comes to my desk that tries to do any of these things, it will earn my veto.

Celsius and Kelvin are equivalent in degree spacing - add 273.15 to get the temperature in Kelvin when working in Celsius.

I’m pretty sure their significant digits are more than the 2; that’s a 1psi difference. Not 2.

You don’t go through analytic chemistry/instrumental analysis and not know your sig figs. So 13 would still be read as 13.0 (assuming the gauge is at 1 psi increments and analog - with a digital you have to assume the tenths place is the variable one), which gives you three.

Presumably the balls were tested post-game after they had been allowed to acclimate too - not immediately after the game. Which would make the difference (which I have read quoted as 2psi in the article linked above) substantial - and probably not linked to the temperature. I would think they would test multiple times over multiple days to be sure, especially for something like this.

I use gauge pressure because that’s what is measured. On second thought, that is right to use the absolute pressure because the air pressure inside will be the same as the air pressure outside, in spite of the temp differential.
Recalculationg,
27.7/294 = x/268
=> .094=x/268, => 25.2 psi-14.7 = 10.6, a 2.4 psi drop

Using 14.7 as a standard outdoor air pressure at sea level, the actual barometer reading will be close enough

I root for the Packers because of family obligation. And also because I like seeing a collectively fan-owned team do well.

Presumably the league has set a temperature at which the measurement is to be met; this isn’t rocket science, people know that the tire pressure is dependent on whether the tires are hot or cold, and it’s the same concept. I would guess, given the leaks, that the balls have failed the test at the set standard. That won’t be due to temperature fluctuation on the field, although your explanation of why it matters is helpful (I had no idea).

I could tell you all sorts of interesting temperature-dependent shit, specifically to do with glass. :) The challenge of smart-phone screens: how do you make them durable without compromising the internal structure in the ion-substitution phase!

“And I may not answer the questions the way that either the moderator or you want to hear”- Sarah Palin during VP debate with Joe Biden.

And that was the sense I got of Joni’s performance. It was a carefully scripted set of platitudes that in no way actually rebutted anything Obama said; just a script to be read by a talking head with a minimal opportunity for gaffes. Why wouldn’t deferred action (DACA) immigrants who reside in California and have gotten an ID not be able to fly within the country?

Customers applying for an original driver license will need to do the following:
Study for the driver license knowledge test
Make an appointment before visiting a DMV office (walk-ins are only accepted at our Driver License Processing Centers)
Complete a driver license application form (DL 44) available at the DMV office
Under AB 60, applicants will need to provide DMV with:
Proof of identity and California residency
Pass a vision test, knowledge test, and if applicable, a road sign test
Give a thumb print
Have a picture taken
Schedule a future appointment for the behind-the-wheel driving test, if applicable

Why would we want them not to be able to fly within the country, where their movements are tracked, their id’s checked and verified? Why would we want to deprive the airlines of their dollars? Or force them onto busses and carpools?

The only reason is to inconvenience them, out of spite, there’s no other rationale.

Well, apparently, when the REAL ID act is implemented in 2016 the AB60 licenses won’t be good for air travel anymore. Until then, the Feds have to accept these documents despite the documents themselves saying the Feds shouldn’t accept them. It’s a weird bureaucratic mess, I’ll admit. But since they have the same ID requirements as regular driver’s licenses, It’s not a huge issue (unless you’re afraid of flying Mexicans).

I know…how about a national ID card? One for all citizens (which would also serve as voter ID) and one for all legal resident aliens. One that you will need to produce to register kids for school, open a bank account, get a driver’s license, register a car or sign a lease…

It would solve a lot of these petty issues in one fell swoop.

Any takers out there?

I wish China would issue a kind of resident alien ID card, so I wouldn’t need to wave my passport around when booking hotels and the like. Also, it might let me skip the ticket counters at the train stations and use the ATMs to buy tickets. Here at least, a national ID card lets you do a lot of online stuff that we furners can’t do without jumping through all kinds of hoops.

If the USA ever gets around to issuing national ID cards, they need to consult with me about how not to do it.

Not holding my breath.

The Israeli national ID card system operates on a decent enough system - just do away the reference to religion and it should work well enough.

Mind you, that’s with regards to the old, existing system, not the terrible terrible stupid-beyond-belief disaster-waiting-to-happen that is the new biometric system they’re trying to implement amid a long-lasting wave of citizen protests (it involves the creation of a database center holding all the biometric details, among many bad elements that can easily explode in the country’s collective face).

And in today’s Terrible World News category:

Ynet: 13 stabbed in terror attack on Tel Aviv bus; 4 badly hurt

A Palestinian terrorist armed with a knife stabbed 13 people during rush hour on Wednesday morning in a terror attack on a bus in central Tel Aviv. Four of the victims were badly hurt in the attack.

At roughly 7:15 am, the terrorist, a 22-year-old from the West Bank town of Tul Karem, boarded Dan bus number 40 on Begin Road in Tel Aviv, close to Beit Maariv Bridge, and stabbed the driver and more than a dozen passengers before fleeing the scene. He was quickly tracked down by Israel Prison Service officers present in the area, shot and apprehended.

Of the wounded, four are in serious condition, three sustained moderate wounds and the rest were lightly hurt. People were also being treated for shock after the attack.

Hamas has welcomed the attack as an “heroic and courageous act.”

Oh yeah, quite the “heroic and courageous act” -

‘I threw my bag at the terrorist and smashed the window,’ says eighth grader in Tel Aviv attack

“The terrorist suddenly began stabbing,” the 13-year-old recalled. “We all ran back. Most people came flying towards me.

“I was sitting on the bus and I heard people shouting. The terrorist had suddenly gone to the driver and stabbed him. He was shouting things, but I couldn’t hear clearly. I saw him stab the driver, and I ran to the back with the others to get away from him. He approached us, I broke the window and got out.”

If the leaders of Hamas were to be torn to shreds by a pack of rabid animals, it’d still be better than they deserve… *spits*

A government database of biometric data is a big step toward a surveillance state. I’m OK with a national ID card, but sharing my fingerprints, palm prints or retinal scans with the government is a non-starter.

That’s precisely the sentiment shared by roughly 99% of Israeli citizens. Right now, the whole thing essentially limited to those willing to volunteer for it and it is primarily used at the Ben Gurion Airport - those using the automatic biometric system can pretty much go through the standard customs inspections much quicker, without being in line.

The real concern in Israel is not with the ‘surveillance state’ part, but rather that it’s only a matter of time before such a system can be hacked (previous databses which the government deemed ‘secure’ were breached in the past), and the biometric data could be used for all manner of terrible uses - with the potential use of such data for identity theft being the least of the potential consequences…

I should also point out that the whole thing only became a reality because of the cooperation of several short-sighted politicians in the Israeli government a few years back with a couple of high-tech companies looking to score government contracts when there were discussions on how to improve the existing national IDs.

You know what’s the most ironic thing when it comes to the demented gun ownership issue? Even when taking all of the terrorist attacks and casualties of terrorism AND crime into account, the statistics for total death rates from the past 10+ years in Israel is still WAY lower than the US - and that’s when all those holding weapons - including every IDF soldier (not all of which are armed beyond the point of boot camp) - account for less than 5% of the population.

223 Archangelus  Jan 21, 2015 4:10:55am

Having gone over all the little details of today’s attack, I realize now that had I not decided yesterday to delay my plans for tomorrow, I’d have been present at the exact time and place it went down. Yet another bullet dodged (or blade, in this case)… for someone that’s survived plural terrorist attacks in the past, I reckon it’s more of a thing than for most people.

Speaking of bread on your feet, when I was a kid my parents bought this expensive edition of Anderson’s Fairy Tales which included this grotesque illustration of “The Girl Who Trod On A Loaf” a cautionary tale about naughty children who disrespect valuable food.

This story, and most of the illustrations in this book, scared the living shit out of me and I can’t look at a Szyk drawing to this day without a little shudder. His anti-Nazi cartoons kick ass, though.

Zeduahka said his parents bought him the same book and it scared the crap out of him too.

A government database of biometric data is a big step toward a surveillance state. I’m OK with a national ID card, but sharing my fingerprints, palm prints or retinal scans with the government is a non-starter.

Combine the high confidence in biometrics with the fact that fingerprints can be printed with commercially available 3D printers from 2D data, add in the hacking and loss of information through error and you have another mess. Remember when holograms were going to make credit cards and ATM cards impossible to forge? Biometrics will just add a very expensive hurdle for the bad guys to jump at little cost to them.

RAUNER PICKS PLANNED PARENTHOOD VICE-CHAIR TO HEAD HEALTHCARE AND FAMILY SERVICES

Way kewl, right?

My not so favorite conservative email digest source (source of article) doesn’t thing so:

Last week, a report on the conditions of Illinois abortions clinics found during Illinois Public Health Department inspections was made public, showing that none of Illinois Planned Parenthood clinics are licensed by the State Health Department, and none of them were visited during the 2011-2012 round of inspections. Of the other 14 clinics visited - some after not being inspected for nine years - 193 safety and health violations were found.

“I’m very disappointed to hear of Governor Rauner’s pick for the Department of Health and Family Services,” said Illinois Family Institute’s David Smith. “Let’s hope Ms. Norwood uses her position to encourage healthy families in Illinois. Let’s also hope she supports changing the state’s policy to include annually inspecting Planned Parenthood clinics.”

Norwood could face a conflict of interests if lawmakers point out that the Planned Parenthood clinics, of which she vice-chairs the directors’ board, are not licensed nor inspected by the state of Illinois. A call for routine clinic inspections is expected in the upcoming legislative session.

The police officer who came to investigate the next day did not recommend getting a gun, he recommended locking all the first-floor doors and windows and installing an alarm system.

Holometer

The Fermilab Holometer is a new kind of instrument designed to study the quantum character of space itself. It measures the quantum coherence of location with unprecedented precision.

Laser light passing through an arrangement of mirrors will show whether space stands still, or whether it always jitters by a tiny amount, carrying all matter with it, due to quantum-geometrical fluctuations. We call this new property of space time “holographic” noise.

It also helps to remember that Marco is one of the Class of 2010, who are up for reelection next year. And in a swing state that has gone strongly for Obama in the last two elections, I think he sees the writing on the wall. So unlike Rand, who figures he can just skirt state law to run for both the White House and reelection to the Senate, Marco realizes he has to devote himself to one or the other.

Statistics. How do they work.

The odds of an individual American getting beheaded is extremely low. Far higher odds? Getting shot by a firearm somewhere in the US (whether self-inflicted or by someone else).

The odds that some American will be affected by global warming and climate change? 100%. All Americans will be affected, whether it’s the direct costs of rising sea levels (the 180 million Americans living on or near coastal areas), or those who indirectly experience it through higher food costs resulting from droughts and changed weather patterns over long term periods (as already seeing from extreme drought in CA). Severe weather will be seen over wider region and for longer periods of time - affecting tornado alley (which is pretty much the entire southeast and midwest); lake effect snows might be more severe as well as warmer weather will mean the lakes stay open water allowing more moisture to be picked up and dropped as precipitation downwind.

Etc.

I’m actually thankful to Eric and Ilsa. We’ve been hearing from their American counterparts for years now - people complaining that at only $250,000 a year, there’s no way they could afford to pay a few extra dollars in taxes.

They’re right. Under their current budget, they can’t, but no one forgives or pities the poor for living outside their means. A photo of the founder of Germany’s new anti-“Islamisation” movement showing him wearing an Adolf Hitler-like moustache and hair style surfaced in German media Wednesday.

Bild daily quoted PEGIDA spokeswoman Kathrin Oertel as saying the photo of Lutz Bachmann was “a joke”.

It cited Bachmann himself as saying he had taken the picture, which shows him with a small black moustache and wet hair swept into a side-parting reminiscent of the Nazi leader, around the time of the publication of a bestselling satirical audiobook about Hitler entitled “He’s Back”.

“Under U.S. law, I would say there is no chance of bringing a defamation case against the Fox network,” CNN legal analyst Paul Callan explained. “Under French law, however, if they can get jurisdiction over Fox, there’s a law from 1881 — believe it or not — that says if you insult the honor of a French body or person, you can sue for defamation. So under the 1881 French law, they might have a case against the Fox network in France.”

I’ve heard individuals talk about the insanity of prices on items.

“Who would ever need such and such?”

As if the very item’s existence is a stupid venture on the part of the manufacturer.

They truly think the whole work lives like they do, thinks as they do, and can’t possibly pay cash for the item.

They wouldn’t go into debt for such at item, who would? Therefore it is stupid to produce it.

In 2005, nonhospital providers estimated that while more than seven in 10 women traveled less than 50 miles to access abortion services, nearly two in 10 traveled 50-100 miles and almost one in 10 traveled more than 100 miles.[42]

Public health officials in Lane County said they have confirmed a case of measles that’s believed to be related to a California outbreak linked to visits to Disney theme parks in Orange County during the winter holiday.

Spokesman Jason Davis says the case involves a Eugene man in his 40s who went with his family to a Disney park in the outbreak area, traveled back to Eugene, began displaying symptoms and went to a medical provider.

Davis says he believes this is the first Oregon case linked to the Disney parks outbreak. It’s the first measles case in Lane County since 2007.

Now there is some investigative reporting I’d like to see.

What many don’t know is that high-profile people do not or cannot shop in stores like everyone else (for obvious reasons).

Either a personal shopper comes to their home/office or they have to come into the store before or after normal store hours.

Unfortunately, I can’t because some &^#@^%% numb skull decided that the tickets (free) would only be given out at the BSU stadium on a first come first serve basis. Until the supply convoy you were a guard or driver on got ambushed.

(Friend of mine who was a USAF NCO and did weapons training down in Texas got a flood of enlisted USAF through his courses. They were being given weapons training and then being sent over to Iraq to serve as guards on supply convoys.

He also did two stints over in Iraq himself as a liaison with Iraqi troops. Due to that he has an ongoing dislike bordering on hatred for PA National Guard troops. Said NG troops at the base he was at would fire at patrols out beyond the perimeter even though there were notices sent out repeatedly that a friendly patrol would be out in that area at that time.)
