GOP Posts Crudely Edited Copy of State of the Union Speech, Deletes Sections on Climate Change and Antisemitism

YouTube

I started to write “unbelievable,” but this is sadly all too believable — and horrifyingly emblematic of a political party that is quite literally denying reality: Republicans Post Doctored Version of State of the Union, Censor Facts on Climate Change.

(The video above is set to start right before the clumsy edit.)

In the website’s “enhanced webcast” of the State of the Union speech, President Obama’s comments criticizing Republicans for saying they are “not scientists” when it comes to climate change are erased.

At the 43:25 minute mark, President Obama is supposed to say “I’ve heard some folks try to dodge the evidence by saying they’re not scientists; that we don’t have enough information to act. Well, I’m not a scientist, either. But you know what — I know a lot of really good scientists at NASA, and NOAA, and at our major universities. The best scientists in the world are all telling us that our activities are changing the climate, and if we do not act forcefully, we’ll continue to see rising oceans, longer, hotter heat waves, dangerous droughts and floods, and massive disruptions that can trigger greater migration, conflict, and hunger around the globe.”

And that’s not all. The Republicans also edited out Obama’s remarks denouncing the rise of antisemitism.

The 43:25 minute mark is not the only place where the video is edited. At the 44:51 minute mark, a section is edited out where Obama spoke of respecting “human dignity,” prohibiting torture, and speaking out against anti-Semitism. The section that is edited out reads as follows: “As Americans, we respect human dignity, even when we’re threatened, which is why I’ve prohibited torture, and worked to make sure our use of new technology like drones is properly constrained. It’s why we speak out against the deplorable anti-Semitism that has resurfaced in certain parts of the world.”

The reason why they removed the climate change section is obvious - they’re in massive denial about this issue. But it’s also obvious that they took out the reference to rising antisemitism because it conflicts with their propaganda that Obama is anti-Jewish.

As petty and dishonest a move as this is, it doesn’t hold a candle to what Boehner did this morning:

Can anyone remember the last time Congress invited a world leader, without the White House’s approval, to stump for a bill that undermines critical negotiations?

Sorry to break thread, but I asked my midwestern friend about the Joni Ernst breadbags.

He says:

Well, it’s a half-truth. If you have a pair of old-school Sorrel boots, they came with a leather/rubber shell, and a thick wool liner. It was a good idea to slip a bread-bag over the liner if the water-proofing was going. It was a very cheap fix to a simple problem. So no, she didn’t -just- wear bread bags.

What’s hilarious is, if you do the math, Joni’s little tale of being so poor would have happened during the Reagan years. Which I think says a lot about the GOP, that they have run out of youngin’s in the party ranks whose stories of poverty and hardship predate St. Ron’s turn at the rudder.

The GOP aren’t against red tape. They’re perfectly fine using it when it can be used to kill programs proffered by the President or favorable to the environment. The GOP wants to add bureaucracy to the ability to declare areas protected as national parks or wildlands, which are covered under the Wilderness Act. It’s got everything to do with the president and preservationists trying to prevent land from being used for fracking in close proximity to national parks or wildlands, and the GOP doing everything possible to drill on/in/under national parks and protected lands.

Heck, one of the most threatened pieces of land in the nation is around the Elkhorn Ranch Teddy Roosevelt built out in North Dakota - where he got the idea to create a network of national parks. He picked a location for its serenity and peaceful nature, and now there are oil pump rigs on the ridgeline in sight of this historic property and within the historic district.

Nothing shocks me with the GOP these days. Not revisionist histories. Not amorality. Not the ahistorical caucus. Not the economic illiterates who prance around claiming that trickle down economics works. And certainly not the global warming denialism (which they also excised from the SOTU).

Not even the overt racism, misogyny, and anti Semitism. But to cut the President’s remarks identifying anti Semitism? That serves no purpose at all.

It’s as though they’re cutting to cut, and aren’t even bothering to pay attention to the content of the message (which is also an ongoing theme by GOPers).

VB said this in the last thread, which reminded me that I did the same thing when I was younger.

When trying to get feet into boots, we’d often use plastic bags to help the foot slide into the boot. For me it had nothing to do with the weatherproofing of the boot, but getting the foot into the boot. Also, I never used bread bags, although that would have worked, too. I *think* I used plastic grocery bags which were just coming into being when I was young.

If you listened to the schmoe from my home state (Aaron Schock) last night, he was pushing that minimum wage jobs are solely for the young who are starting their careers, and, heck why make it $10 an hour…why not $15 or $20 (the same thing all GOPers say).

NBC News tries to make the SOTU sound as though it was a farewell speech. Sorry, but that’s next year.

This year’s iteration by President Obama sounded more like Hank Hill going over how the crew operated a restaurant (though more as a civics lesson for GOPers who appear clueless about how government, federalism, and separation of powers works).

From the US Senate’s web site:

The Bosses of the Senate, 1889

This frequently reproduced cartoon, long a staple of textbooks and studies of Congress, depicts corporate interests—from steel, copper, oil, iron, sugar, tin, and coal to paper bags, envelopes, and salt—as giant money bags looming over the tiny senators at their desks in the Chamber. Joseph Keppler drew the cartoon, which appeared in Puck on January 23, 1889, showing a door to the gallery, the “people’s entrance,” bolted and barred. The galleries stand empty while the special interests have floor privileges, operating below the motto: “This is the Senate of the Monopolists by the Monopolists and for the Monopolists!”

When commentator Bernie Goldberg pushed back, stating that “if any news organization has to apologize as many times as Fox has over this one issue, something is wrong,” O’Reilly attempted to shift the blame to Steven Emerson, the Fox News guest who made the initial “no-go zones” remark about Birmingham, England.

Pro-LGBT Colorado baker slapped with religious discrimination complaint

Man wanted a cake shaped like a bible with an anti-gay message on it.
Baker would make the cake but refused to add the message, offered to give man an icing kit so he could do it himself.

The gift that keeps on giving:

Jailed Virginia state Del. Joe Morrissey is facing new criminal charges just one week after winning re-election and returning to the state Capitol with a chilly reception from his colleagues.

Morrissey faces four felony counts, including lying under oath and entering a forged document in court, according to an indictment unsealed Wednesday in Henrico County Circuit Court.

Henrico County police searched Morrissey’s law office on Jan. 12, the same day a grand jury decided to indict him and one day before the special election to fill Morrissey’s seat. Detectives were looking for allegedly fraudulent documents entered into court in December, when Morrissey was convicted on a misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

House Republican leaders are struggling with a more-aggressive-than-expected revolt by female legislators against the anti-abortion bill scheduled for a floor vote Thursday.

The women — led by North Carolina Rep. Renee Ellmers — have been meeting with GOP leadership Wednesday to see if they can tweak the bill to satisfy their concerns. They’re mostly worried that the bill allows abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy only in cases of rape and incest, and only if the victim has filed a police report. Many opponents believe the victim shouldn’t have to go to police.
GOP leadership is exploring changes to the bill.
Republicans will have to pass the legislation without Democratic support, which means they can afford to lose only 27 GOP members.

OK, I’ve missed this. WTF?

I was just thinking about this while I was making coffee. It’s not really all that surprising. Israeli Jews aren’t any less susceptible to racism or bigotry than other humans, it’s just that it stings more sharply when it’s coming from your adopted religion. It’s like you find this new set of ideas that you end up embracing because you think they’re wonderful, beautiful in theory—bright & shiny, and not yet tarnished by negative personal experiences.

If you’re lucky, you can manage to go along happily for long stretches of time thinking things are great then one day—*BAM*—reality jumps up and sucker punches you, making you re-assess everything you thought you understood about your new co-coreligionists. You then have to admit to yourself that no matter how awesome you think your religion is, you’re still sharing it with a bunch of other humans who are not inherently better, more moral, more intelligent, or less prone to personal shortcomings than any other group of people. Lofty notions of “exceptionalism” must then be set aside, or at least greatly modified so they mesh with reality. It’s an unpleasant, painful task.

When I was a graduate student and Senate intern in the late 1980s, I wrote a master’s thesis that proved to be a rather shallow attempt to explain Robert Mugabe’s hold on the Zimbabwean electorate nearly a decade removed from independence. Twenty-five years later, that hold on the electorate has long since been exposed as brute force and chicanery. What is left to explain is Mugabe’s mystifying hold on the rest of Africa.

Ross Ulbricht, aka “Dread Pirate Roberts” is like Ed Snowden, if Snowden sold drugs on the Internet.

This guy certainly won’t get the husband of the year award.

Police say a New York man demolished his upstate home without telling his wife he planned to tear it down. The Middletown Police Department says that when officers arrived Monday at the property owned by 48-year-old James Rhein’s wife they found him using an excavator to knock down the house. Officers say he didn’t remove any household items, such as furniture, food and belongings. Instead, he dumped everything into large construction debris bins.

It also doesn’t mention how the illegal substances were delivered to the consumer. because using USPS for that is totes a felony.

sure signs seen of the effectiveness of last night’s speech, e.g.:

It’s time to go back to Thomas Jefferson’s practice of just sending a written message to Congress rather than the speech before Congress with all its pomp and political maneuvering. It should return to being a report on the actual state of a nation instead of being a laundry list of, as Obama said last night, doing what he believes is best for America

yah ronald reagan should never have done that melodramatic thumping down the printed budget on the podium - it merely highlighted how much he relied on pomp and politican maneuvering and showmanship over substance

I could kind of turn a blind eye to that shit, kinda … maybe … totally ignoring for a second the real dangers of hard drugs … because that shit was all voluntary transactions without use of force. For 10 years she’s had a cat she calls her love cat because of the affection he shows to her by kissing her, hugging her, sitting with her and purring so loudly I can hear it across the room.

While V was in the hospital, and in the days after I noticed Jack was throwing up a lot. Unfortunately, I couldn’t pay a lot of notice to him because I had to help V out as much as possible, but a few weeks ago we took him to the vet to have him checked out. We found that he had a heart murmur and only 25% of his kidneys were working correctly. We started giving him meds designed to alleviate his nausea, which it did, but a few days after that he started eating less, and he’s now gone a week without eating and two days without water.

Nothing we do, including giving him meds to improve his appetite is helping and today V phoned the vet to see if anything can be done. She was informed that Jack’s organs were probably shutting down already. When I got home today I found him hiding in the bottom of my clothes closet.

Nothing is going right for V.

Man shopping for coffee creamer at Walmart attacked by vigilante for carrying gun he was legally permitted to have

BRANDON — Clarence Daniels had just crossed the threshold of Walmart’s front doors on Tuesday, in search of coffee creamer for his wife, when the gun in hip holster gave a well-intentioned vigilante the idea he was up to something more sinister.

From the Walmart parking lot at 11110 Causeway Boulevard, Michael Foster, 43, of Lithia had watched Daniels, 62, take from his car the handgun — for which he holds a concealed carry permit — and place it on his hip underneath his coat, Hillsborough sheriff’s deputies reported.

As Daniels entered the store, a label for the coffee creamer in his pocket in case he forgot the brand, Foster tackled him to the ground and placed him in a choke hold, sheriff’s spokesman Larry McKinnon said.

400 goddamnedfrank  Jan 21, 2015 5:00:08pm

The listed agent for Got News, LLC on Corporation wiki is one Joel Gilbert, who apparently has a Wikipedia entry.

Political topics[edit]
Confessions of an Overworked Mom, a reviewer at Blogcritics, called Gilbert’s 2010 project Atomic Jihad: Ahmadinejad’s Coming War For Islamic Revival And Obama’s Politics “an eye-opening political documentary”,[11] and Esa Linna of Finnish source Elitisti, while giving the film 1 and a half stars out of five, wrote that the film did provide a thorough overview of Islam and the Middle East.[12]

Conversely, Gilbert’s 2012 political film Dreams from My Real Father was more poorly received, receiving negative press for its many unsubstantiated allegations toward President Obama’s birth and background. Slate offered that the film “peddles a conspiracy theory so convoluted that more traditional birthers must be envious of its creativity”.[13] Jerome Corsi wrote in WorldNetDaily that the film was claimed by its director to have been based on two years’ worth of research.[14] Both Corsi and The Hollywood Reporter stated that, among other things, the film makes unsubstantiated allegations that President Barack Obama lied about being the son of Barack Obama, Sr., that Obama’s real father was Chicago Communist Frank Marshall Davis, and that Obama’s mother posed for nude photography.[15][16] In expanding on the filmmaker Gilbert’s allegations toward Ann Dunham, The Hollywood Reporter wrote “It’s about the lowest thing you can do to accuse, with no evidence, the opposition candidate’s mother of being a porn star”.[15]

So, it looks like we may have found CCJ’s initial angel investor.

That’s a very important point. The only former presidents that have had anything to say that anybody wanted to listen to in recent decades (10, maybe?) were Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, and the character assassination they’d been subject to muted their voices, so to speak.

Obama’s been through all the (unprecedented) character assassination. There’s nothing further they can do. He’s a young man, and a very good writer. I think he’s going to be an important voice for a long time—and no longer hobbled by the political restraints he has been while in office.

So imagine if you will a group of civilians who run around with radios to aggressively monitor police call outs and record the police department. Oookay that seems a little extreme. But maybe so far so good. Now overlay that with aggressive displays of long gun firepower ala Open Carry. These guys strap on guns, roll up on police operations step up and record. In Texas. Of course.

Holy crap. This is a horrible convergence and I would not want to be a cop trying to arrest a bigger man and have to worry about a bunch of amateurs with long guns standing about.
