Female Republicans Stage Last-Minute Revolt Against Draconian Anti-Abortion Bill

What GOP war on women’s rights?
Politics • Views: 27,592

The fanatical Republican men in the House of Representatives faced a revolt from their own female members today, and backed down on a horrible Personhood-inspired anti-abortion bill at the last minute.

House Republican leaders abruptly dropped plans late Wednesday to hold votes on an anti-abortion bill amid a revolt by female GOP lawmakers concerned that the legislation’s restrictive language would once again spoil the party’s chances of broadening its appeal to women and younger voters.

In recent days, as many as two dozen Republicans had raised concerns with the “Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act” that would ban abortions after the 20th week of a pregnancy. Sponsors said that exceptions would be allowed for a woman who is raped, but she could only get the abortion after reporting the rape to law enforcement.

A vote had been scheduled for Thursday to coincide with the annual March for Life, a gathering that brings hundreds of thousands of anti-abortion activists to Washington to mark the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion.

Republican leaders dropped those plans late Wednesday amid ongoing disagreements with a bloc of lawmakers, led by Reps. Rene Ellmers (R-N.C.) and Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.), who were elected in the 2010 tea party wave.

I wonder if they invoked the Lysistrata Option?

Republican leaders love to say there’s no “war on women,” but hey — when even your own Republican female Representatives are freaking out over a crappy piece of legislation you tried to sneak through that would cause untold harm to women all over the country, then this, my friends, is a serious War on Women’s rights. And I won’t be intimidated out of calling it that.

But the only reason the women are opposing it is because they think it will hurt their chances with the voters, not because they don’t agree with it.

Not because it’s wrong…because it’s politically expedient.

Fuck them for their whims. We (women) only matter to these women because they need us. (spit)

Yup, it’s a pragmatic decision, but even that’s pretty revealing about what’s going on. They know they’re pushing the envelope way too much.

This situation is only going to get worse for the GOP. These people are on the way out, and the stink of desperation is on them.

“Several news organizations reported last week that some Republican women, including Rep. Renee Ellmers, had objected to the clause requiring rape survivors to report to the police. But the same provision was in the 2013 version of the bill, which passed with all but six Republican members voting yes, including Elmers.”

The stink has been on them for a long time. Now it’s festered to a deep stench.

And you’re right, their 2016 clown car of candidates is going to create deep desperation.

God help us all.

It’s a great pity that this bill didn’t make it out of the House. Surely it would have been a mighty engine of job creation had it become law. //

Which is precisely why this is all bullshit.

Between this blatant posturing and the Texas Senate changing the rules to stifle dissent even further, I have even fewer fucks to give about the GOP. They’re a bunch of fascists and everyone who votes for them is either deluded or ignorant.

I’m not going to write the obituary for the GOP until we have a presidential election with less than 40% popular vote for the GOP.

The GOP is a party of Confederates, creationists and assorted other kooks. It has been that way for decades, and still had 47.2% of the vote in 2012.

The conclusion that a significant fraction of US voters are in favor of a new Confederacy, creationism and kookiness is inescapable.

Considering Brownback was re-elected after providing a noisy public clinic on the failure of tax-cutting and trickle-down economic theory, some prime irrationality must be at work.

It will be very interesting to see if GOP-run blue states give some of their electoral votes to the GOP in 2016.

That might be a sufficiently blatant power grab to get people’s attention. On the other hand, it might also be the only plausible path to a GOP victory.

A majority of KS voters in that election apparently view voting against Democrats as being more important than having a functioning state government.

It could be set to auto-renew at midnight or whatever. There’s also a grace period during which you can still keep it from being put up for sale. Even if it expires, sometimes the registrar will sit on it and put it up for bid instead of making it available at the regular price.

Yep.

My husband bought my domain back for me after I’d oopsed and let it go and he had to wait for the other guy to fail to renew and then he bid during the process just to make sure he got it back.

And now he’s in charge of renewal.

That’s how you know I got a keeper.

That was before being opposed to abortion was the ticket to political power and before the evangelicals were willing to make peace with the papists to further their theocratic dreams.

Ronnie didn’t care either way so long as it ended up with him in the White House. Same thing when he signed the Mulford act and all the other support he gave to gun control over the years.

With Change in Procedure, TX Senate Democrats Lose Clout

“Now the approval of only 19 senators instead of 21 will be required to bring legislation to the floor for debate. The change — passed on a vote of 20-10 — has the practical effect of allowing Republicans to consider a bill without a single vote from one of the chamber’s 11 Democrats.”
