Mind-Bending 4K Video of the Andromeda Galaxy: The Largest Photo Ever Taken

Makes you feel small, don’t it?
Science • Views: 29,433

YouTube

You’ll leave this video with a sense of how unimaginably vast the universe is. This isn’t CGI, and it isn’t animation, it’s the largest photograph of the universe ever taken by the Hubble Space Telescope — and it’s just a small portion of the Andromeda Galaxy, our nearest galactic neighbor.

Watch and be amazed. (1440p and 2160p versions are included.)

NASA has taken 100 million pictures of the Sun. And they all fit in the wallet NASA wears in the back pocket of its jeans.

I understand that we are planning a mission to send men to the Sun. Of course we’ll have them land at night.

Thank you…. and tip your server well…

Best possible move he could make. Prevent Bibi from turning this trip into a photo-op with him at the White House, while excusing it in a way that makes it obvious the President sees this as little more than a campaign stunt. Not that Republicans won’t bitch up a storm about his refusing to meet with their idol, but there’s nothing they can do about it. If anything, it might actually help convince Democrats who are on the fence about sanctions that signing onto this farce is a bad idea.

41 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge  Jan 22, 2015 7:10:57pm

Also remember that our galaxy and the Great Nebula in Andromeda will collide in 2 billion years or so. The collision between the gas and dust clouds in both galaxies will lead to an enormous burst of star formation—a large number of which will be short-lived supergiants that will shortly explode in supernovae, sterilizing any life-bearing planets.

When you look at the giant elliptical galaxies that contain up to a trillion stars, also remember that they were formed by the collision of a large number of spiral galaxies like ours, with the process repeating itself each time until all the gas was used up.

If YHWH the Wind God is responsible for all that, he’s a complete asshole. Fortunately, he’s just the tribal boogeyman of one band of nomads….

71 stpaulbear  Jan 22, 2015 7:48:37pm

Sure, conservatives believe in economic opportunity

California Republican Rep. Tom McClintock said on Thursday that the minimum wage should not be raised because low pay was necessary for minorities and other unskilled workers who were not worth more than $7 an hour.

During an appearance on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal, host Greta Brawner asked McClintock if he could get behind a presidential candidate like Mitt Romney, who is one of an increasing number of Republicans saying that the minimum wage should be at least $10.10 an hour.

But McClintock argued that raising the minimum wage would “rip the first rung in the ladder of opportunity for teenagers, for minorities, for people who are trying to get into the job market for their first job.”

Honestly, just say you were derping again because it hurts your feelings when people suggest that conservatives’ efforts to tell women what to do could result in the extreme that is seen in Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, I will still hang out over here and work to make sure conservatives aren’t elected, because I actually believe that I deserve equal pay for equal work and the ability to make decisions about my own body. You know, rights you take for granted but women can’t - especially given the legislative actions of the Republican majorities.

Ellmers is not championing women’s rights or women’s health, she is not asking that her party have a come to Jesus moment about its priorities. She is betting, perhaps correctly, that it would look pretty bad to take this specific issue up among the new Congress’ first votes, at a moment when the GOP is fighting, and losing, a battle to shake its image of being anti-woman.”

I’ve got good sales in the pipeline and I expect ‘em to close before the end of the month, but if none of them do I may have to leave. They won’t force me out, but I can’t do without income, even if only unemployment, for long.

But again, I don’t think it’ll come to that, because my sales prospects are good. But its been a nasty month for the whole office, and its effecting my mood tonight. Hence I snapped at a snarky Tweet I found annoying.

So here’s some advice, that I perhaps don’t follow as often as I should but I do try to keep in mind.

There are days where I am cranky as shit. Sometimes, on those days, the appropriate response is to step away from the computer and do something fun. Or do something fun on the computer. But in general not interacting with people, except in very small doses. Because when I am cranky like that, I am likely to over-react, and even policing my reaction wears me out.

Your mileage may vary, of course, but I find that trying to reduce the amount I talk when cranky is helpful. Because otherwise I am going to reap what I have sown, in terms of response to a cranky comment, and people are going to be peeved because I have overreacted to something that was minor, if not completely inexplicable. And I’d rather dig myself out of fewer holes, but that’s just me.

There was a movie on tv a couple months ago that was basically about an attack by 10 foot bunnies. They weren’t the rabbits you see running across your lawn, these were extreme close ups of petting zoo bunnies. It was such an awful movie. Loved it. Wish I could remember the title.

103 darthstar  Jan 22, 2015 8:06:57pm

Hey Dark, I’m having a bad week too at work. I misread my management and was surprised with finding myself on the ropes so to speak. And I do good work, as the fact that I have zero attrition in my career as a manager shows - nobody leaves my team because I hire smart people and I treat them with respect. But I don’t get along with idiots in positions of power, and I stepped on some toes the last few months. Shit happens.

Now I’m just working my way back into their good graces so I can leave on my own terms.

Am I angry? Yeah. Am I disillusioned? Yeah. Will I take it out on anonymous people on the internet? No. I tried that before, and it doesn’t help.

Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, but it ‘snot really a documentary. It has a performance by the Dirty Mac (a band with John Lennon) in which Yoko Ono shares a mic with a violin player and at one point he’s trying not to look at her.

I recently stumbled onto a series out of England called ‘Under Review’ that put together 70 minute documentaries on a lot of 60’s and early 70’s bands. There are lots of them on YouTube, but occasionally they’re cut into sections and one of the sections is missing, which is mucho frustrating. Nice rant. Both posts. Really, when Huckabee says crap like Americans should be forced to read David Barton at gunpoint, yeah he comes off as no different than the Taliban in my book. Frankly, I worry more about Christian Law taking over here than I ever would Shariah. Why? Because there are actually politicians in this country pandering to those who want a country ruled by the Bible and hell some of them like Huckabee himself actually believe. I’ve not seen one Muslim-American politician suggest that Shariah is the path for America’s legal system. I have seen Huckabee, who is prominent and influential in Republican/conservative circles suggesting that we need the Bible more in our society. Really Huckabee can believe whatever he wants but the desire to marry his idea of church with the state is a dangerous one.

I predicted years ago that if access to abortion services was curtailed, there’d be a boom in underground acquisition of abortion drugs.

Sales of Misoprostol, a drug intended to prevent stomach ulcers but also used to induce abortions, are rising as desperate women seek ways to terminate pregnancies.

Cartons of the drug are now valued at £130, as its value rises due to Texan women turning to the black market to terminate their pregnancies, according to a Sunday Times report.

ibtimes.co.uk

The article mentions Texas; I remember reading an article last year about going to a border flea market and asking around carefully to get the drug. Obviously, there’s no supervision and no follow up when done under the table like this, to say nothing of quality control. The pills could be sand for all they know.

Well it’s like that with spending and defense too. Conservatives love to say that you can’t throw money to solve a problem but they’re the ones including “budget hawk” Ryan who called the joint chiefs liars when they said some defense cuts were needed because of waste. And don’t forget conservatives love to talk about “intrusion on to people’s liberties by the government” but yet these guys love supporting all the restrictions that can be done on what is a legal procedure.

It was knowing about that sort of thing that I believe played a big part in Senator Kennedy becoming pro-choice. He saw that the wealthy would get abortions Roe or no Roe and that the poor would be screwed. Really, their whole abortion policy is formulated by men who have never attempted to empathize with women but I guess that’s the point of what modern American conservatism is. It’s an ideology formulated by wealthy white guys for wealthy white guys without attempting to empathizing how those policies may effect other.

Dumb-ass of the day. Real estate tycoon buys a townhouse and gives his mistress a 40 year lease for $1 a month. Then he puts the property under the control of a corporation (I guess for liability purposes) but his wife is the property manager. Mrs finds out there is a property only getting $1 a month rent, checks it out and finds the mistress. Fun fun fun.

Ah CCJ logic:

There is no murder victim until the justice system tries and convicts an offender.

There is no robbery victim until the justice system tries and convicts an offender.

There is no rape victim until the justice system tries and convicts an offender.

He has a warped sense of logic there.

Convicting an offender has nothing to do with whether a person is a victim of the crime. They are separate and distinct legal issues.

A person can be raped, and the accused can avoid rape conviction any number of ways: failure to indict; indictment but plea deal on lesser charges; indictment, but trial finds not guilty (which as I don’t have to remind you is not the same as innocent).

But this is CCJ, and facts and logic are meaningless.

These people really do live in a different universe.

These people really think that Obama hates Israel or thinks more highly of Iran or Cuba than they do of Israel.

They have to ignore years of support, including direct assistance and military support during the various battles of late (including last year’s Gaza war), that includes funding development and deployment of Iron Dome systems faster than the IDF had envisioned originally.

It also ignores that the US has taken hands off on diplomatic front for a peace deal. Obama isn’t pushing for a peace deal in the overt and usual manner as seen in 2d term lame ducks for decades. There is almost certainly back-door talks ongoing, but that’s always the case. Obama isn’t demanding Israel stop settlements or other actions, and isn’t siding with the PA on the ICC or statehood. So, to claim that the President is now against Israel is a truly misleading notion.

What is apparently true is that there is no love between Netenyahu and Obama, but that isn’t the be-all and end-all of the Israel-US relationship. GOPers and right wingers are busy trying to divine intent from that alone, and the President’s refusal to meet with Netenyahu after the GOP invited him to speak in front of Congress. The interests of Netenyahu and the President don’t fully align here either - Netenyahu has an election to win, and a speech before Congress may help his chances. That’s Israeli domestic politics at work, and Obama doesn’t have to help Netenyahu either way.

Mossad’s split with Netenyahu - whether it’s as bad as some of the reports were claiming, or is simply a matter of degree shows that Israeli opinion on Netenyahu isn’t as monolithic as the right wingers and GOPers would want people to think either. Shades of grey (which is always the case when you’re talking ME politics).

And so it goes.

Same deal with the death of the Saudi King Abdullah and installation of his successor, Salman. Salman has been essentially ruling Saudi Arabia for the past year, and has been defense minister since 2011. The US knows him - he’s a known quantity, and the regime there has been charting this course for years. It’s not like the situation in Yemen, where no one knows what will happen now that the regime has fallen to Iranian backed rebel forces.

What is likely is that the Saudis will take the events in Yemen seriously and likely mount their own insurgency to install a Saudi-friendly regime and oust the Houthi group.

re: #204 wheat-dogghazi-bola-trality

He’s forcing the dots to connect, under threat of severe, prolonged doxxing.

1. Silver is a Democrat.
2. Clinton is too.
3. They represented NY State.
4. They spoke to each other at least twice, in 1999.
5. He’s being investigated for corruption.
6. Hillary is silent on the matter.
7. ——?
8. She’s a crook!
9. Please send me money.

Silver has been Speaker of the NYS Assembly since 1994. He’s spoken to lots of people in elected office, since he’s one of the 3 men in the room that decide the state budget each year.

He’s probably spoken with a bunch of GOPers too.

And it’s not like he’s the first of that troika to get indicted or run afoul of the law or have to resign from office.

Joe Bruno was indicted and convicted (but the sentence was overturned).
Eliot Spitzer ran afoul and had to resign.
Silver was last man standing, though what he’s done is ostensibly worse than both of those guys combined. Not only did he likely engage in corrupt practices but he’s responsible for paying out hush money on sexual harassment suits against members using state money - which shouldn’t have been done in the first place. He was more interested in keeping the sexual harassment suits quiet than he was in seeing justice done.

He deserves all he gets here.

Everyone kowtows to Silver up to now because he was the longest lasting member of the troika in the room. Now, everyone should start a scramble to see who replaces him because we’re entering budget season - and the state budget is supposed to be in place by April 1. With Silver essentially getting sidelined here (and there may be more indictments to come), it’s going to be interesting to see who takes the helm for the Assembly in budget talks. If I had to guess, it’d probably be Majority Leader Joseph Morelle but also in the room would be Herman Farrell who’s been in the Assembly for as long as I can remember, and is the Chair of the Assembly Ways and Means. Deputy Speaker Earlene Hooper may move up, but it’ll be interesting to see how the Democratic party caucus deals with this.

FYI, a recent history lesson for the NYS Assembly:

Prior to Silver becoming Speaker, there was turmoil in the Assembly Speakership too. Mel Miller was speaker from 1987 until 1991. He was indicted on fraud and other charges (and convicted on same). Upon conviction, he was expelled from the legislature. The Democratic party majority leader James Tallon assumed the speakership temporarily, and ultimately Saul Weprin was elected as Speaker at the end of 1991 (Weprin had run and lost for the Speakership previously). Silver was then elected speaker in 1994, and he’s been in that position ever since.

If that’s any guide, this will play out in much the same way.

285 goddamnedfrank  Jan 23, 2015 7:00:18am

Y’know, the whole thanking veterans for their service thing may have kind of started off in a nice way, but it’s kind of bullshit too. I realize that after 9/11 there was this big push to rally around the troops and not repeat the societal malaise and antipathy towards some soldiers that followed in the wake of the Viet Nam debacle. But that’s exactly what “thank you for your service” is all about, and it’s become a facile kind of rote / kneejerk sentiment at this point. And if douchebags like Dondero are using it as a passive aggressive club against folk then it’s definitely past time to confront the fact it may have jumped the shark.

As much as I think serving is a laudable thing, I also don’t really think veterans did it for me or so that people can thank them for it later. I think mostly they did it for themselves, because it was a cool job, and they got to go off and do cool shit, get paid for it and have some decent benefits. If you’re doing it so that people can kiss your ass for it later in life that seems kind of fucked up, priority wise.

MRA’s basically spring up out of the same mindset as slut-shaming. The idea being that a woman who is a slut, but doesn’t want to appear to be a slut, would lie and say she was raped in order to gain sympathy and cause trouble for her boyfriends. Therefore, it becomes the goal of the MRA to uncover the truth about the woman’s promiscuity so as to cast doubt on the idea that she could ever be truly “raped”, because clearly she enjoys indiscriminate intercourse too much to ever say no to a man. If she does say no, she’s “playing hard to get” or “being a cocktease” and therefore gets what she deserves. And somehow this all excuses the fact that men who rape are brutal animals with no control over their baser urges.

Because clearly, a woman attending a party indicates her consent to sleep with any man who approaches her regardless of circumstances.

That would be the thinking of fundamentalists of all religions. If she presents herself in public without a male family member —she is a whore.

re: #312 thedopefishlives

And somehow this all excuses the fact that men who rape are brutal animals with no control over their baser urges.

it’s not about their baser urges. It’s about Power and Control.

Yep. I work for a health care fund, and people here get ticketed if they even leave PHI on their desks when they go to the bathroom. This stuff is taken very seriously, but Chuckles lives in a fantasy world.

One of my last jobs in IT was making a medical practice HIPAA-compliant. That involved everything from replacing all of their PC monitors, to rearranging workstations, to going paperless so that they’d have complete control over who could see which portions of patient data. The notion that anyone could walk in off of the street and witness a procedure at the potential cost of shutting the place down is ludicrous.

If a clinic violated the HIPAA standards, that could be grounds for state/fed officials to fine; repeat violations would be significant. We’re talking max penalties of $50,000 per violation & a max of $1.5 million per year. So, if some anti-abortion activist thought that there were violations, they could contact the state AG or federal officials and push for imposition of these sanctions.

Due to the financial hardship of a max penalty, that could potentially shut down the facility.

In other words, if CCJ, who claims to be anti-abortion, thought that these violations existed, and claims to know HIPAA, would have contacted the necessary authorities to launch an investigation to shut down the facility. No proof that he did any such thing. No proof that he ever went anywhere near an abortion clinic.

That he took no action shows that he’s just lying his ass off once again.

Nutrition and sanitation are no panacea for measles and no substitute for measles vaccination. Living in the United States does not magically protect you from dying from measles or other infectious diseases. Being generally healthy alone is not a guarantee that you won’t end up hospitalized from a measles infection. Your best defense against measles is an up-to-date MMR vaccine for yourself and your family, checking to see that you live in a neighborhood and school system where others are likewise vaccinated, and spreading the word that vaccines are safe and life-saving. The best way to respect measles is to acknowledge its potential to cause serious illness.

Nutrition and Sanitiation in this country aren’t all that great either. We’ve become lax on many fronts.

How do you write a rape exception that only includes “worthy” victims and excludes slutty ones? How do you separate the “legitimate” victims from the lying ladies who want to get their boyfriends in trouble? How in US Jesus America is the GOP able to believe on one hand that abortion is some kind of prize that worthy and pure victims can access and slutty accusers cannot, and on the other hand that abortion is the most evil act there is? These are literally the problems that Republicans struggle with when they write abortion legislation.

Especially because many teenagers are trying to save for college, for which a huge majority of the youngest portions of our professional workforce are now drowning in DEBT. To which I am reminded: Those who cannot embrace change become a victim of it.

The problem is that we are *chained* to them in regards to this one. So we’re going to be victims too.

What did Love (heh-heh, get it her last name is Love!) do break their hearts? But yeah I guess Love is a better analogy for Rubio, the immigrants’ child narrative. I am honestly surprised that Ted Cruz hasn’t broken their hearts yet but Cruz is perhaps the biggest panderer of them all with his equally kooky father.

She voted for Boehner to remain Speaker. The wingnuts had high hopes that she’d join their little temper tantrum and she disappointed them.

But Ernst, Love, and others get me to another point that I’ve been trying to make since the GOP wave in 2010. The GOP and right may present to us more youthful and culturally diverse candidates but it doesn’t mean a damn thing for actual change if they’re going to be right wing lunatics.I suppose this was the rebranding after all though. “Hey America, we’re going to give you Todd Akin but except this time he’s a woman!”

Behold, the power of religious brainwashing. Bachmann is a well-known regular guest at the local megachurch on the north side of the Cities.

I used to think that religion was useful, despite being an absurd lie, because it kept bad people in line, but the conservatives use their alternative version of Christianity as a justification for being bad people, so I’d prefer that we all shed our superstitions and grow the hell up at this point.

But the reality is that his lies and smears have consequences - not for him for the most part - but for the targets of his lies and smears, and for that it’s unforgiveable.

Yet Twitter still wont pull the ban hammer.

It’s also worth noting that pretty much every utterance he’s made about, well, everything is a lie or a smear or an obfuscation, so the retort “CCJ lies” should be a macro you insert every time you respond to something he says or does. Because 99/100 times, that’s exactly what it is.

Of course in her book “devout” also means any Muslim who prays, fasts, eats halal food, etc. It makes me LOL because seeing as how 1/5 of the planet is Muslim, there are more than likely hundreds of millions of “devout” Muslims scattered around the globe. RedState goes to the mattresses on their attack of the Republican Party.

Maybe it is time for a third party to give the GOP competition. Yesterday, the GOP threw its base under the bus. The Republicans who claim to support the pro-life movement, including Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) who claimed she’d vote for the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act after she ensured it would not pass, need to be beaten. Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC), in particular, must be ruined politically even if it means the pro-life community sends a pro-abortion Democrat in her place. They’ll still have improved the seat by replacing Ellmers with someone who is not a damnable liar.

In short, the pro-life movement must stop being the whores of the GOP. The Republican Leadership knows the pro-life movement is in its pocket. They have nowhere else to go. They have no one else to vote for. As much as Republicans look at black voters and tut-tut that they are being taken advantage of by a Democratic Party that knows black voters will not go anywhere, the Republicans are doing precisely the same to pro-life voters.

Should be fun to watch.

Here is something a little different. What makes this quilt interesting is that EVERY seam is straight, there are no curved seams. The curves are an optical illusion.

I really like his version of an obscure (to me at least) Sinatra tune, “Stay With Me,” from the new album.

My harp is scheduled to arrive between 1 and 5 today.

No, I have no patience, why do you ask?

Harp and castanets…and spiders.

I’m trying to figure out that harp. I think it is triple strung - avoiding the need for pedals/levers but a whole different style of playing.

I really want to learn the hammer dulcimer someday too.

One of my feline overlords, about 45 minutes ago—nice afternoon light coming in the window. Her white fur got a bit blown out in the first one, but I’m pretty happy with the other two despite the obviously shallow depth of field (especially since cats never fail to move as soon as you focus on them).

All shots were taken with my 40mm prime lens in aperture priority mode and are straight out of the camera (unretouched and uncropped).

Is it shipped fully strung or do you have to do that? Also, how long does it take to tune?

Shorter RedState: WTF Ellmers? What’s wrong with demanding rape victims go to the cops, file a report, fulfill whatever other requirements we demand, before we consent to letting them murder their full grown baby in their wombs? FREEDOM!!!

Shipped fully strung, and should be relatively in tune - to fully tune a new set of strings such that they hold tune can take weeks, but they strung it back before Christmas so it’s had some time.

To tune up, maybe 15 minutes-ish. Although my tuner batteries are dead. As I discovered at the Christmas concert. Oops.

RedState goes to the mattresses on their attack of the Republican Party.

Should be fun to watch.

redstate.com

They really don’t understand that the Republican party can’t seek the votes of smart people if they cater to religious fanatics. The problem with being as insane as Erickson is that you wind up believing that everyone outside your cult is crazy, instead of seeing the problem with the cult itself.

re: #491 HappyWarrior

Me, I’ve long been a proponent of making a distinction between the quality of someone’s voice and their skill at singing. Dylan doesn’t have the most pleasant of voices — but the expression in tunes like Like a Rolling Stone, Idiot Wind, Absolutely Sweet Marie, and Forever Young, to pick a few — and even older standards like Don’t Think Twice and Tomorrow is a Long Time — are, IMO, almost unmatched. I consider him to be a truly great singer with an odd voice.

There are plenty of people who have quite pleasant and well-trained voices who are incapable of nuance and emotional expressiveness. (Many of them are contemporary pop stars, none of whom I intend to slag.) I’ll take Nina Simone over Carrie Underwood any day, for example….

I don’t have a weather gauge, but our sidewalk was damp …3 days ago? Maybe? That’s really the best we’ve had all month, and I’m not sure it wasn’t dew.

But hey, we can have some record highs this weekend.
